Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Spanish Classical Guitar Music.......2005-09-18

As a sampler, this CD is an excellent introduction both to Spanish classical guitar music and to guitarist John Williams.
The music ranges from Renaissance composers (Sanz, Mudarra) and harmonized folk melodies to standard 20th Century works (Rodrigo, Torroba etc).

John Williams is excellent throughout. The CD is also cheap, and can be used either just for enjoyment, or further to explore other recordings by Williams, the classical guitar repertoire, or other classical guitarists.

As a marketing ploy, it is very effective.

For the collector or classical guitar enthusiast, the chief disadvantages of the CD are duplication of other recordings, and that the way at least some of the works on this CD are listed isn't helpful in telling the listener the set(s) to which these pieces belong and how to find them (e.g. "from ______, Op # "). The font listing the titles and track numbers is small and somewhat hard to read.

However, this CD should attract many listeners and enthusiasts both to the classical guitar, the repertoire, and guitarist John Williams - and I'm all for that.

Over 70 minutes playing time.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The guitar is an orchestra in miniature!.......2005-02-05

This admirable concept belongs to Hector Berlioz and it must not be a surprise the best guitarrists in the story have in common this trademark.

John Williams has always known the delicate equilibrium between the expresiveness and the glamouer. His impresive technique however is not exposed as his prima edonna. He goes directly to the soul of the composer, melts in his spirit and let the music sharp the qith eloquent conviction the composer's demanded atmosphere.

From Granados to Albeniz, from Rodrigo to Agustin Barrios - El indio Mangore -, from Moreno Torroba to Ponce , you will find the warmth, the passion and the Midas touch of this golden guitarrist.

5 out of 5 stars GUITAR MAJESTY.......2004-12-21

John Williams is a true Guitar virtuoso. His repetoire is very extensive and I use his music in my office while I work at my daily office duties. This album is a must for all guitar enthusiasts old or young.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sweet music, an essential addition to your collection.......2004-12-07

I originally bought this album three years ago, looking for a good introduction to Spanish guitar music. And this one fits that need perfectly. I still listen to and enjoy it today. I play this for guests at happy hour or dinner for a relaxed atmosphere. At Amazon's current price, this is a great value.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2004-01-26

This album/cd is extraordinary. All the songs are gorgeous and exciting to listen to. John Williams' interpretation and technique are perfect. After 22 years of listening to it, I still enjoy and appreciate it more every time. I love giving it as a gift.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy it.......2007-02-11

Ok. The guitar players are good. But there is so much extra noise such as heavy breathing, the guitarist moving around etc. in many of the pieces. I am only somewhat being humerous when I say I am suprised you don't hear the guitarist belching or passing gas! It is a very, very irritating recording of good guitarists.

1 out of 5 stars Certainly NOT Relaxing.......2006-08-04

This CD would get an average rating if it was merely titled "The World's greatest guitar music". However, this CD is supposed to be "relaxing". Well, it most certainly is NOT. Some of the pieces literally sound like soundtracks to a movie thriller.

Very misleading title to an otherwise pretty good collection of Spanish guitar ballads. If you are looking for something to relax or sleep to, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars On the mark.......2006-02-25

From the time I first attended a John Williams concert 40 years ago, I have been a collector of Spanish / Classical guitar music. I often play, on a Ramirez, some of the tunes on these two disks. The selections are wonderful examples of the world's greatest guitar music. I actually take naps while listening to these cd's. The guitarists are excellent; I only wish Denon had listed their artists.

4 out of 5 stars NIce Collection!.......2005-11-12

I listen to a lot of classical guitar (and other stringed instrument) music, and I like this collection. It draws on an unusually wide range of guitar compositions, which is a plus, and it's well produced, with good sound and balance - I think it's a better than average collection.

The Segovia heard in these recordings, made between 1927 and 1939, is quite different from the somewhat enfeebled legend who toured and recorded through his 80s. The flashing virtuosity and color of the best of these 78s compares better with the virtuosic standards of the '90s. Just hearing Tárrega's familiar Recuerdos de la Alhambra in this 1927 recording is enough to convince you that you're listening to one of the great guitar virtuosos of all time. It's unclear why Segovia's often-sentimentalized Bach became so famous, and the transcriptions that lead off this disc are quite unstylish by our contemporary standards. But once you get past those and the following Baroque items, which take up only a few minutes, you're into the romantic and 20th-century repertoire that Segovia played so brilliantly. The amazing transfers make the recordings sound much more recent than they actually are. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Editorial review.......2007-02-23

I don't agree with Leslie Gerber's editorial review of this disc, Segovia's playing of Bach is beautiful and he infuses this music which is so easy to play in a sterile fashion with great attention to the melodic line, contrapuntal texture and form, skills which are often sadly lacking in todays performances of Bach. Leslie Gerber blindly follows the politically correct mood of the day which is to deny that there is any romance in this music, truly great performers don't just play the dots they bring something special of their own to the music, a point completely missed by Leslie Gerber and other critics and commentators of her kind.

2 out of 5 stars Great Track Selection but Not So Great Sound!.......2006-05-21

This is a good sampling of the great master's earlier works and I suppose given the age of the recordings, it's inevitable that the sound quality would suffer. It doesn't help when this album is recorded in Mono from an ADD master source as well. What this means is that the sound quality is very poor indeed. Given the state-of-the-art sound engineering technology that is out there these days, I hope EMI decides to revisit the vaults and dig up the best preserved master tapes and remaster these in stereo and clean up as much of the sound as is possible for re-release. That would be the only way to do justice to the memory of this all-time guitar great. They've already done this with Django Reinhardt's early work and so it's about time they got around to updating and remastering the Segovia catalog. I, for one, will be waiting for the day with great anticipation...

5 out of 5 stars ALL SEGOVIA IS GREAT.......2005-07-12

Gotta have that slow spanish guitar when things get hectic. Spanish guitar by Segovia (not the more frenetic flamingoists which is another mood) and other slow subtle spanish greats fits a special mood. I usually mix it with nature music, oud, sitar, and Anouar Brahem (all).

3 out of 5 stars Nice but Noisy.......2004-01-21

As a casual fan I was surprised by the noise
on the track. You might choose to hear
the noise as a pleasing retro background. This
CD is probably great for Segovia experts, but
if you're looking for nice background music
just be aware it will sound like the old vinyl
it was remastered from.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional guitar work.......2002-10-17

Segovia makes his brilliance shine on this compilation. You can't deny the musicianship in these early recordings that, if you are familiar with any of his later sessions, were never left behind. Buy it, you'll love it. I'm sure you'll be scouring for more Segovia to grace you cd player.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best collections of Torroba.......2007-06-27

I think this recording is very relaxed for the most part. He kind of breezes through these with speed and doesn't take enough time on some pieces but David Russell is the cleanest guitar player around and these recordings are flawless. He lets you hear every note. Burgalesa is an amazingly beautiful, melancholy piece which Sevogia loved. Montemayor is haunting and tremelo is exquisite. Alba de Tormes is a popular and beautiful piece which sounds great. Fandango is probably the most popular piece here which overwhelmingly captures the Spanish feeling and which Segovia recorded extremely well (probably the most famous recording of Fandango) on his "Favorite Spanish Encore" LP and Russell sounds great in this piece, too. I'd rather listen to Russell play these than Yepes, Segovia or the Romeros.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest interpreter of Spanish guitar music.......2007-03-28

David Russell is one of the finest interpreter of Spanish guitar music. His interpretation of Torroba's music is one of the finest. David's performance of The sonatina in A major is very expressible, He plays the guitar with a lot of Heart and emotion, the recording he made of great Paraguayan composer Agustin Barrios Mangore is the best.

4 out of 5 stars Good recording overall, a few issues.......2006-11-07

Probably one of the best things about this recording is that its a great collection of most of Torroba's great solo guitar music. Russell hits all the important pieces and plays them all with flair and accuracy. Russell's playing is very expressive and he tends to capture the esssence of the music. The playing is clean, beautiful and precise. Good tone, dynamic contrast, all the basics that guitar students spend years perfecting. However, Russell does play a little too heavy sometimes. I like to think that if Torroba were playing electric guitar today he would sound a lot like Pat Metheny with a little Spanish flavor. His music should never be too bombastic or heavy. Not to say that Russell never lightens up, but he doesn't always back off when he needs to. Some of the slower, more lyrical Castles of Spain especially aren't as effective as they could be. The other issue about this recording is that the track listing is WRONG! It should go like this:

Sonatina for Guitar in A Major
Burgalesa
Suite Castellana
Castles of Spain
Madronos (Not "Madranos")
Nocturno
Aires de la Mancha

Because of this glich in the track listing, all of the Castles of Spain tracks are off by one track as they are listed on the CD liner. It isn't even correct on David Russell's website.

The only other thing that I don't like about this CD is that some of the notes are a little weird. I know that there were differences between Torroba's original manuscript and Segovia's editions of the pieces, but some of the notes are either wrong or different from anything I've ever played from (and from what I remember that Segovia originally recorded). It's only a very minor detail as there may be some note decisions where Russell decided to preserve some original notations by Torroba, and I am always in favor of preserving the composer's original intentions over Segovia's rewrites if possible. It's not overly important, it's merely just a yellow flag to the guitarists out there saying that your edition may be slightly different from what Russell plays.

This is a great recording providing interesting contrast to Segovia's original Torroba recordings. While Segovia is the original "performance practice" version of these pieces, Russell's interpretations are for the most part very good. I would recommend listening to Segovia's recordings of Torroba as you would be cheating yourself to only listen to this recording.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not great.......2004-05-14

The reviewer "ivorx" has hit the essence of this performance right on. David needs to relax when the music calls for it. Torroba is not an intense composer and needs to flow in a more relaxed state. However, this is a very good CD of great guitar music by one of the guitar's greatest composers. I really wish more of Torroba's guitar concertos would be recorded by quality musicians.

5 out of 5 stars A Guitar Lesson.......2003-10-28

Any serious student of classical guitar who wants to learn the music of Torroba and has unanswered questions about how to play these pieces needs this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best Albeniz .......2007-04-02

I am in agreement with the reviews which ascribe to Mr. Russell the superior technique and to Mr Vieaux the superior interpretation of Albeniz. (At these heights of musical accomplishment, it seems hubristic to dare compare.) So, I add nothing in this regard.

What I do wish to mention is that the liner notes specifically state that reverb is not used in the production process. The recording was done in a cathedral with what the notes refer to as 'dual source recording.' The result, in all respects is remarkably effective.

Albeniz seems to me made for the guitar. These guitar transcriptions transcend the original piano compositions.

5 out of 5 stars Jason Vieaux 's Albeniz CD is masterful.......2005-05-13

Having just raved about David Russell's CD "Legends of Spain," what to say about Jason Vieaux's all-Albeniz CD, Sevilla?

Both CDs are wonderful examples of Spanish classical guitar playing at its best. That Russell has the superior technique seems clear: His technique has to be heard to be believed. But technique is more than physical prowess. It is the ability to utilize technique in the service of bringing out what you want to in the music. It is the combination of touch, variation of tone and color, dynamic shading, and the like - the ability to totally control, sublimate, if you will, one's technique in service to the music.

Jason Vieaux's playing is masterful, his playing intensely poetic and very musical. Each piece seems superbly crafted and realized, the playing drawing you into it seductively. I've rarely heard a guitarist utilize the sounds and capabilities of the instrument as much as Jason Vieaux. Fine as both David Russell and Jason Vieaux are in Albeniz, if I had to choose, I'd take Jason Vieaux.

For other ways of playing Albeniz, try John Williams in his all- Albeniz CD (Sony), Manuel Barrueco in his CD of Albeniz and Turina (EMI), and Julian Bream in his CD of Spanish Music for the Guitar (the Suite Espagnola, Op. 47, BMG/RCA).

The sound in Jason Vieaux's CD is somewhat reverberant and resonant, but not compromising.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish guitar at its finest.......2005-01-04

For me, it is interesting to compare this recording to a similar recording by David Russell ("Reflections of Spain") that readers might also know. These recordings share only a few pieces by Albeniz between them (given that Jason Vieaux, unlike Russell, is playing all Albeniz), but they both speak to the Spanish sensibility in a similar vein.

Starting from a purely objective and clinical viewpoint, Mr. Russell is a technically superior guitarist. He plays with almost no detectable string or finger noise and with a deceptive ease that I have heard in no other player. He also plays a comparatively resonant guitar, giving his sound a remarkable and uniform depth of tone and the illusion of a guitar that is pitched lower than normal; and, he makes maximum use of this sound in all his playing. Also, his recording seems more acoustically "natural." Mr. Vieaux's recording seems to have either added reverb or is made in a much more resonant recording space.

For all of Russell's flawlessness, Vieaux simply stands apart in his brilliant rhythmic and sonic interpretation of the music. Even if his technique lacks the polish of Russell's fluid playing (with string noise not more than most first-rate guitarists), as another reviewer has noted, Vieaux simply "transcends mere technical proficiency" with an utterly focused energy and sensitivity that is uncanny to hear.

The most illustrative work to compare them is Sevilla, which each guitarist has arranged himself from the piano original. Russell plays it ever so cleanly and with what I might call an easy and friendly delivery. Again, his tone is perfectly even, extremely lyrical, and consistent throughout. His transcription is a bit longer than Vieaux's by a minute and a half (not sure exactly how, played at a similar tempo--may be by taking more repeats).

Vieaux, on the other hand, plays with a much richer color palette, using more of the string between the bridge and the finger board to subtly alter the timbre (similar in approach to the remarkable Sharon Isbin of "Dreams of a World"). His voicings are incredibly subtle and his ability to stretch and steal tempo (reaching beyond rubato) without seeming to lose a beat, is breathtaking, especially in the intensely passionate slow middle section of this piece. I can think of no other way to describe his sound and rhythm than pure Spanish in temperament. Even if the recording adds reverb, Vieaux seems able to voice it perfectly (which may indicate the "reverb" is not really that much added). Russell plays this middle section with a pleasant lilt, but with nothing of the hair-trigger angles, and stunning silences that Vieaux weaves through the same piece.

I truly love both players playing, but if I had to choose one, I would take Vieaux's effort without hesitation. Yes, it would be nice if Vieaux could play as flawlessly as Russell, but it might well be that Vieaux could never deliver the expressive range and rich content that he has achieved while attempting to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Imaginative Composer & Outstanding Guitarist.......2004-04-04

With the exception of Bach, Isaac Albeniz probably deserves the most gratitude by classical guitarists for his contributions to the classical guitar repertoire. Even though Albeniz wrote for the piano, many of his compositions sound more appropriate for guitar; furthermore, his works are thematically brilliant and well developed. As with many composers, Albeniz was able to draw upon his country's folk music, including flamenco, for musical ideas and inspiration.

Jason Vieaux, the performer of this collection of fine works, is one of the best classical guitarists today. He gives each piece a beautiful interpretation and tonal quality. I think only a few of the best guitarists exceed Vieaux's performance of certain pieces in this collection: John Williams' stupendous 1969 recording of "Asturias" and "Sevilla" from The Seville Concert; Parkening's exquisite "Rumores de la Caleta;" and Segovia's "Torre Bermeja." But even with the aforementioned pieces, Vieaux gives his own distinct and brilliant touch; moreover, his "Granada," "Tango," and "Cuba" are the best I've ever heard. The only piece I wish Vieaux had included on this CD is "Zambra Granadina." Overall, including the very good recording quality, this is a wonderful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best Guitar Recording (Category: ever).......2003-12-04

This young man is as much a revelation in this century as Segovia was in the last. The recording team are to be congratulated on bringing listeners into the presence of this superlative artist. Do not miss this amazing recording.

4 out of 5 stars Technically brilliant recording of standard chamber works.......2005-03-15

If you are considering purchasing this CD, it's likely you're either a present or past French horn player (I'm a past one) or an esoteric collector of classical music (I'm getting there myself). The selections on this disc are probably not well known by the non-horn playing sections of the orchestra, but they are de rigeur selections for the professional or ensemble soloist. (It would have been perfect had Poulenc's "Elegie" been included as well.) I purchased this disc for four specific selections: En Foret, the Beethoven sonata, Gliere's "Intermezzo", and Glazunov's "Reverie". The difficulty of En Foret is legendary and obvious from its performance, but for some reason both the Faure and Gliere drove me nuts when I was getting my music degree back in the old days.

Mr. Cerminaro plays all the selections on this disc with note-perfect mastery, and that is saying quite a bit. Not only are there no missed notes (or at least none that I could detect, following along with my mental scores), but there is a full mastery of range throughout the low and high registers that is not frequently found in horn players. The liner notes reveal Mr. Cerminaro's justifiable pride in, for example, nailing the falling octaves in the final movement of the Hindemith sonata. (The notes also contain an unusually detailed description of his horn.)

I can recommend this disc for anyone interested in the horn or any of the composers. My reservation in rating this disc five stars, rather than four, concerns the overall tone of Mr. Cerminaro's horn. Before his solo career, Mr. Cerminaro was principal horn for the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has the "New York" horn sound, which, as a matter of personal taste, I find a bit brash. I am a big fan of the soft, dark, mellower tones of Dennis Brain, whose virtuosity was an inspiration for Mr. Cerminaro (and countless other scores of players!). At times, forte and fortissimo passages sound to me like a trombone playing a little bit out of control. However, if you enjoy what I think of as the "New York" sound (and what the notes refer to as a "distinctly thicker and richer American concept of sound"), then you will probably enjoy this CD even more than I did -- and I enjoyed it a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Blue CD...a must-have....John is the greatest!.......2000-07-26

This is the best solo horn CD I've come across. Cerminaro's playing is amazing and versatile...from the Bozza to the Franz Strauss. It has plenty of the horn solo standards and some lesser known works. I also recommend John's recording of the Mozart Concerti.

5 out of 5 stars En Foret is the best.......2000-03-24

On the whole, all the recordings are excellent (particularly the Hindemith and the Franz Strauss), but, as stated in other entries, the En Foret is absolutely breath-taking. In my mind, a CD single of just this recording of the Bozza would be worth retail price, for this is the definitive recording. The way John Cerminaro traverses the stunning four octave range of this piece (with special emphasis on the pedal C that is amazing), takes apart the technical sections with the virtuosity of a smaller horn player and the solid sound of a Conn, and sails with phrasing that ties the piece together sets this recording apart from the others. By all means, do what I did: listen to the Tuckwell, listen to other recordings--then BUY the Cerminaro.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful Playing.......1999-12-29

As he has shown us time and again, John Cerminaro is a masterful interpreter of not only the "classical" works for Horn, but also of twentieth century music. The Franz Strauss "Nocturno" Op. 7 has brought Cerminaro much acclaim throughout the Horn-playing community as well as in the music loving community. In addition to this, the closely related Hindemith and Bernard Heiden Sonatas show his knowledge and mastery of perhaps lesser known works. But, the crown jewel of this album is Eugene Bozza's "En Foret." This recording is the definitive one. His bold theme statements from the get-go let us know this is truly "his piece." The chant-like sections of the work are played with such reverence and grace that one could not argue that the sections are trite or cheap (as has been said by some). This album, although released nearly twenty years ago, is all-too-unfamiliar for most. This should be a standard in record collector's homes.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Horn Playing.......1997-10-10

This CD is a must for any Horn player or lover of the instrument! Cerminaro has tremendous technique AND extremely sensitive mucicality. END

5 out of 5 stars Rebel Poet.......2005-01-14

I just love the way Arjona writes, although many people consider him as a trovador (minstrel), he looks more to me like those persons you find in a bar, armed with thousands of tales. Animal Nocturno was Arjona's blessing & curse- his fame increased so much that costed his privacy. Being just one more guy in the city was (at least to me) the key of writing those delicious and fun tales- Animal Nocturno, Yo Te Encontrare, Quien Diria, etc. Jesus Verbo No Sustantivo has such a beatiful message, the lyrics make so much sense- "Brother, what are you doing reading the Bible all the day? What's written talks about love, go and try it", "Praying Our Father 10 times won't bring the dead person back to life", "There are more religions in the world than happy childern", etc. Animal Nocturno is Arjona's most richful work, when he was a rebel poet, a guy who was disrespecful to the music by his way of writing, the essence of that album.

5 out of 5 stars Lo mejor de lo mejor.......2005-01-11

5 out of 5 stars Un Inicio Excelente.......2004-10-09

i cosider Arjona as one of the best singer i have ever heard, i`m a truly fan of him and i hope he keep on doing such as great job as hi has always done it.

    4 out of 5 stars Mark Lawrence.......2006-07-02

Lawrence's great strength as a trombonist is the simple loveliness of his sound, which comes through beautifully on some of the older, simpler melodies.

    5 out of 5 stars David Read.......2002-05-01

Mark Lawrence really has something special here. His interpretations are supremely rewarding, yet beautifully restrained. The Albinoni and Mediatation on the alto trombone are just gorgeous - in my mind well ahead of Alessi recordings of classic string pieces like The Swan. And the Marcello is a formidable interpretation, up there with the best string players, although he doesn't really get the baroque sound sometimes. In general the tone isn't quite as wide and gorgeous as Alessi, but he's picked the repertoire well so this isn't a problem. All in all, an awesome disc, up there with my top three best and complementary recordings out there for trombone (Joe Alessi's NY Legends and Lindberg's Virtuoso Trombone are the others).

    5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2001-09-09

This is a terrific CD. Mark Lawrence demstrates complete mastery of the trombone. This CD covers just about every type of music for the trombone, from very melodic, to 20th Century, to Jazz. Buy this CD. You'll be glad you did.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2000-06-19

This CD shows the capability of Mark Lawrence as compared to other popular trombonists, like Christian Lindberg and Joseph Alessi. Lawrence has the soloistic feel of Lindberg (which is my only complaint against Alessi), and can play convincingly in all the styles exhibited on this disc (which is one of Lindberg's problems). This is a must buy for all trombone enthusiasts!
