The now-retired Régine Crespin is easily the greatest soprano voice to come out of France since World War II, notable not just for its body and luster but for such an effortless sense of line that you're never aware of the individual notes, only the overall musical idea they're meant to create. This was recorded a bit late in her career and some wobble is apparent. But her characterization of the words--so important in Ravel's precise animal portraits in Histoires Naturelles--is peerless. Too bad that the Satie songs--in terms of quality--veer between serious endeavors and cabaret toss-offs. The disc is filled out by Crespin's performance of Beethoven's concert aria Ah! Perfido, which illustrates why she was a formidable Tosca in her day. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars We have been blessed.......2006-02-11

I could not wait to hear this recital after seeing the pre-publicity material from EMI/Virgin. And what a delight. We have been truly blessed with this amazing recital of Mozart favourites, sung with absolute beauty by Garanca. This CD will be played endlessly. A standout track is 'Ch'io mi scordi di te'. Listen to it and see what I mean. Music from heaven!

    5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Mozart Recital.......2006-02-09

I was initially very impressed with Elina Garanca from the Bajazet recording. If she had a baroque album I probably would have purchased that before a Mozart set. However, when I heard this I was enraptured.

Actually I've been looking for a beautiful Mozart female vocal recital album for quite some time, but nothing that I purchased really did it for me. While I was very interested in hearing more of Garanca, I really didn't expect a mezzo to be what I was looking for as an ultimate singer of Mozart. As it turns out, not only does Garanca have an upper register that would be the envy of many a soprano, she has a smooth effortless delivery that is perfect for those lush Mozart arias. Though I believe she is quite young, she seemingly has an unending reservoir of vocal power and prowess.

I give this album the highest recommendation!!

1 out of 5 stars Bag of tricks with a large hole.......2006-10-19

Schwarzkopf never really learned to sing. She applies what always sounds like an untrained voice to music that she simply doesn't have the ability to sing in any complete manner. This remains true on this series of recordings in several languages which might as well all be German. She scoops, she employs straight tone, she approaches high notes as if she is trying to jump through a hoop held a little too high. When she allows her vibrato to appear on a held note her pitch sags. When she tries straight tone instead, her pitch swings sharp.

Schwarzkopf always sounds like the best singer in a local choral group who has learned enough vocal tricks to convince amateurs that she is a real diva. Her entire career is a testament to the gullibility of the general public. There are plenty of Mozart aria and lieder collections available . Listen to "Ridente la calma" by Lucia Popp or Barbara Bonney (clips available on this website) and then listen to Schwarzkopf again and you can readily hear what I am saying.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mozart singing from early and late Schwarzkopf.......2006-07-13

In her prime, which ran roughly from 1952 to 1967, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was the most acclaimed lieder singer in the world, only surpassed perhaps by Fischer-Dieskau. This historical reissue combines one of her most famous recordings, 16 Mozart songs accompanied by the great Swiss pianist Edwin Fischer. The recording hasn't been out of EMI's catalog since the early Fifties, and here it reappears in an excellent remastering of the original mono sound that is lifelike and only a bit boxy.

The second half of the recital comes from 1967, a set of Mozart concert arias that ES made with George Szell as a follow-up to their bestselling Strauss Four Last Songs; there would also be a recording of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs with Fischer-Dieskau that I am not so fond of. In any event, Schwarzkopf didn't retain quite enough voice to throw herself into these arias, but her innate musicality and the fact that Mozart lay perfectly on her voice makes up for any flaws here--just don't expect the young Kiri Te Kanawa. The obbligato piano part in K. 505 is played by Alfred Brendel, who remains a bit cautious, as does Szell, no doubt in deference to Schwarzkopf.

In all, the incomparable Mozart songs should be considered the main attraction, while the concert arias are a souvenir bonus for those of us who cherished Schwarzkopf as an indispensable artist.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!!.......2006-06-08

This is a great recording to have. Mozart lieder and arias are always beautiful and her singing -so clear and beautiful- makes them even more delightful. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars At The Top of Human Voice.......2005-02-11

Schwarzkopf has got one of the most beautiful voice of the century. Almost all great musicians of her time flocked to accompany her either on the piano or with an orchestra. They included not only Geiseking here, but also Edwin Fischer and Furtwanglar just to name a few, and Glenn Gould admired her voice most amongst all classical singers.

Mozart is the biggest genius in the history of music; and Mozart's greatest achievement are his operas with all those beautiful and melodious bitter-sweet arias. Here with this CD with Schwarzkopf in her best, you will be introduced to one of the most beautiful peaks of the art of singing in human history.

Schubert's lieders are deservingly popular. But the more you listen to Mozart's lieders and arias like those on this CD, the more you will incline to think that the main reason why Schubert become more popular is, Mozart's arias, albeit more pleasing to the ears and soothing to our souls, are technically much more demanding, structurally or otherwise so that few singers could render them as perfect as Schwarzkopf.

The recorded sound of this CD is almost as perfect as any modern recording. For the piano accompaniment, however, all except one were by Geiseking, one of the few greatest German pianists who also excelled in Debussy. He enjoyed in his life time and thereafter such a big name (so much that even Martha Argerich desired and actually took lessons with him )! Yet unless you're really attracted to his playing, his role as an accompanist is really no more intriguing than Gerald Moore or even Parons. Needless to say, Brendel by then still under the wings of Edwin Fischer was in comparison to Geiseking, no more than a new boy. He was nevertheless shining here. It is also noteworthy that most of the arias here were recorded by Schwarzkopf in her very prime. In a nutshell, one can't expect more of this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-12-30

This album is certainly worth adding to one's personal collection. Schwarzkopf's voice is simply gorgeous. My personal favorites were Ridente la calma,Abendempfindung an Laura, and Im Frühlingsanfang ("Erwacht zum neuen Leben", Vado, ma dove? It is worth listening to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars A must if you love Mozart Opera.......2002-04-06

The LA Reviewer said it all and I totally agree. The sound is wonderful and singing top notch. A great discovery and a must for any opera collector. Mozart gets better the more you listen to his opera compositions - the set contains many of the outstanding arias not always done in concert but which are lovely and some rediscoveries. Also, our recent loss of Winbergh makes this a buy as we don't have alot of recordings of his beautiful tenor voice. This set features him on 4 arias and his Mozart singing is truly outstanding. This set of 5 CD's a great value and highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Great CD but beware!.......2002-02-24

This has to be the ultimate compendium of these undeservedly neglected arias. Many of the arias themselves rival the most glorious moments in the operas, and some of them, particularly the high soprano arias, are highly-charged vocal stuntfests that have to be heard to be believed.

This set has much to recommend it but does have one major technical flaw. Every copy that I have heard (and that is several) has a skip near the end of Track 10 of Disc 1. It seems to be part of the master and many listeners will be able to live with it, but I do wish that producers would take the time to fix a defect like this for such a significant musical document. Purists beware!

    5 out of 5 stars A MUST-BUY treasure trove!.......1999-09-04

Can't get enough of sublime Mozartian aria music? This complete compilation of concert arias should be part of every Mozart lover's collection, especially as a supplement to better known opera arias. There are gems among the concert collection that challenge even the loveliest of Mozart's better known operatic work. I can't say this is the only version of the concert arias ever to buy... the more versions I hear, the more I love the different interpretations. But if you're only going to sample one set, this could be the winner. The singers represented are masters of the Mozart craft; one virtuoso piece after another - for five discs, each over an hour long! The arrangement of voices, mostly soprano (since they sing the originally castrati arias as well), is also wonderful; no one sound is heard for too long before a very different one takes its place to give a contrasting flavor. And they're all in top form: Kiri Te Kanawa with her trademark creamy mildness is followed by Edita Gruberova's agile, silver-haunted coloratura. Teresa Berganza, whom I usually link with mezzo roles, is a tour de force of golden warmth; her Ch'io mi scordi de te? on disc 3 (piano accompaniment originally played by Mozart himself) is magnificent and deserves special note. Krisztina Laki and Elfriede Hobarth were lesser known to me; both are quite fine, although Laki's crystal sweetness is stronger and more pitch-perfect than Hobarth's, particularly in the highest notes of some mind-boggling musical phrases. The final 1.5 discs are handed to the men; Gosta Winbergh sings the tenor arias with heroic beauty and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Fernando Corena as the bass-baritones are simply the richly toned legends one would expect. A very nice booklet with notes, lyrics and translations to each aria is included. It's a marvelous set; one of my favorite discoveries.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Skill and Sensitivity in one so young.......2000-11-01

At an age when most mezzos are doing local theatre, studying, and dreaming of perhaps one day doing Tancredi or La Cenerentola, 22-year-old Cecilia Bartoli recorded this collection and, in doing so, served notice that for the forseeable future, one could not mention late 20th-century mezzo-sopranos without including her name near the very top of the list. This is no mere album of pretty songs done by a competent singer but some of the most beautifully and skillfully-rendered Rossini in recent memory. Not since Jackie Horne in her prime have some of these songs received such engaging treatment. And, some, like "Cruda sorte! Amor tiranno" from "La Italiana in Algeri", are now Cecilia's, alone. Here's a tip; leave the incredulity at her tender age behind and just listen. You'll be treated to some of the finest Rossini you're ever likely to hear.

    4 out of 5 stars Pure Fun!.......2000-07-06

You can't criticize a perfect blend. Of course everyone knows about Bartoli's weaknesses, BUT her voice was made to sing the lively & lilting, tuneful & titillating music of dear Rossini. This album is pure fun! Don't analyze it, just let yourself lift off! Ciao!

5 out of 5 stars Cecilia is a wonderful singer!.......1999-09-24

This album recorded 1989. She is 23-year-old in those time, but she sung well these Rossini's Aria. I think she will be wonderful singer in the 21st Century. She has a wonderful voice and techinique. Some people says she is not good compared with the singers in the good old days. But I don't mind the things they said. They must envy her sucess.

    I recommend it highly!

4 out of 5 stars Callas - the rare jewels.......2004-02-06

This recital is for those who wonder how Callas might have sounded as Lucrezia Borgia and other roles she never got to sing. I don't particularly care for her Angelina (She lacks sparkle and ease here) but her Lucrezia is a revelation. Dark and gripping, fantastic in the recitative... A dark sort of beauty fitting this dark heroine like a glove... Come e bello indeed!!!!!! A very good recital, if I HAD to pick a "worst" Callas-Recital it would be the Mozart&Weber recital or her third Verdi-Recital.

4 out of 5 stars Callas - the rare jewels.......2004-02-06

This is a recital for those who wonder how Callas might sound as Lucrezia and other roles she never had the chance to do. I do not particulary care for her Angelina (Too little sparkle) but Callas' Lucrezia was a revelation. Once again she shows how Donizetti-recitatives MUST be sung... Crystal clear diction, incredible colouring of the phrases and incredible drama... A dark sort of beauty, fitting for this tragic heroine. The Borgia-scene is worth the entire CD plus the aria from Semiramide is perfectly sung. A very good, mature recital. If I HAD to pick a "worst" Callas Recital I'd go for the MOzart&Weber Recital.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than I was led to believe.......1999-10-27

A lot of people, including the previous reviewer, have said that this is Callas' worst recital. I don't really know why. I'm not an expert, so I can't comment on the technical aspects of her voice; I just know that it sounds good to me! I think it is interesting to listen to Callas in arias from operas that were not part of her repertoire. The arias from Daughter of the Regiment and Elixir of Love were fascinating; they made me wish Callas had sung or recorded the comic Donizetti operas.

2 out of 5 stars AN UNFORTUNATE RECITAL.......1999-06-28

I've always considered this 1963 Callas recital to be the least successful of the whole batch. It's not just the condition of the voice (which had begun to seriously deteriorate since around 1960), but the particular music that Callas elected to record on this occasion, music that might not have engaged her imagination even five or ten years earlier in the years of her vocal prime. Of the Rossini items, only the "Selve Opaca" from "William Tell" (not a vocally difficult piece to begin with) finds Callas making real headway vocally and musically. She glides nicely over the music, sings the words quite meaningfully, and contrives some nice piano notes on the A flats. From here it's all downhill: the wonderful "Cenerentola" rondo is dour and lifeless in the extreme ---- Callas' voice sounds much too mature in this music; the "Semiramide" aria "Bel Raggio" is too morbid and dreary. Of the Donizetti arias, the "Lucrezia Borgia" aria is sung without the rousing cabaletta at the end, which would have enlivened the procedings considerably; the two arias from "L'Elisir d'Amore" and "Figlia de Reggimento" would never have suited the Callas personallity to begin with, and here the much too-mature sound of her voice is all wrong for these ingenues. And then there are the problems of the Callas voice, which at this time found comfort only in the most minimal options in bel canto music. Any note above the staff was risky business, which put just about everything she sang at that time on very shaky ground. Yes, the voice still can do some interesting things: the scales in the finale of the "Cenerentola" rondo are still amazingly nimble (until she has to sustain the final top B!) and the passagework in the cabaletta of the "Semiramide" is noble and compelling, although she seems to momentarily lose her place in the final chain of notes of the cadenza before ending on a somewhat frayed top B flat. This recording, while nowhere near the best of Callas, may be of great interest to her many fans and followers. More importantly, the "Cenerentola" and "Semiramide" arias DO illustrate that Callas' ability to negotiate almost textbook-perfect descending passagework was still intact at a time when her actual voice was a mere shadow of it's former self.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful singing, fully characterized.......2000-05-12

French soprano Veronique Gens has made something of a specialty of singing 18th century opera, including the works of Mozart. But don't think that Gens is one in the line of asexual, vibrato-less, "period" sopranos. Her voice is warm, creamy, womanly, and full. Her techincal accomplishment is excellent, and while her coloratura never dazzles, it is always propelled by dramatic impetus.

In fact, it is Gens' sense of drama and attention to character, situation, and text, which sets this disc on a higher level than that of other fine Mozart aria recitals. Gens inhabits each character, so that her Vitellia is mature, weary, and resigned, while her Sesto is noble, impetuous, and highly earnest. She differentiates Cherubino from the Countess, Zerlina from Donna Elvira, while sounding vocally "right" for each. Listen to Sesto's "Deh, per queste istante" and then the following "Batti, batti," and see if you don't for a moment wonder if two different singers recorded the arias.

For those already familiar with the work of Mme. Gens, this recital is self-recommending. For those who have yet to discover her artistry, I urge you to purchase this recording and succumb to the considerable charms of one of the finest Mozart sopranos singing today.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful singing.......2000-04-22

Veronique Gens is an unusual singer in that in addition to her beautiful voice and excellent sense of musicality, she pays particular attention to the diction and the meaning of the words. She is one of the best. Here she sings some of Mozart's extraordinary music. Although she is usually billed as a soprano, some of the pieces are normally sung by mezzo's. This does not seem to bother her at all.

    5 out of 5 stars A real gem on a great recording........2007-02-27

I have to tell you how horribly upset I was to have this CD stolen from me by my friends (who dared not admit it!)
I bought this together with Ms. Bartoli's "Arie Antique". I love both discs to death.
Ms. von Otter has a very different timbre from Ms. Bartoli. However, in terms of singing, both artists were at their absolute peak in those two discs.
My favorite song on this disc, Gluck's 'Oh, del mio dolce ardor bramato oggetto', though also an Italian 'antique' composition, was NOT on Ms. Bartoli's disc. Ms. von Otter sung it with such soul and voice that I really wonder (increasing more so these days) if Ms. Bartoli could be as good!
I heard both their 'Voi che sapete', and must say that I preferred von Otter's, though Bartoli gave an almost equally good interpretation in her own Mozart album.
Having reacquired this lost album recently, I would add that Ms. von Otter's interpretations in the rarer Mozart operatic works are a real wonder. Compared with Ms. Fleming's Mozart album wherein contained a number of Mozart's rare works, the singing of Anne Sofie von Otter clearly is of a much more convincing standard. As the singer herself puts it: 'On passionate women and moustaches', undoubtedly this disc demonstrates the full musical capability of hers in both genres to a fascinatingly high standard.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!! AN 18th CENTURY VOYAGE.......2001-04-23

AN EXCELLENT VOICE! AND A VERY WELL THINK REPERTORY. I REALLY HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS BEAUTIFUL CD EITHER IF YOU LIKE THE GREAT VOICE OF VON OTTER OR THE CHARMING ARIAS OF MOZART, HAYDN AND GLUCK.

    5 out of 5 stars A Charming Disc.......1999-03-05

This collection finds Von Otter at top form and paired with a very sympathetic accompanist. (Would that Pinnock did more vocal pieces, his Haydn Mass is also lovely.) While I am not usually a fan of the scattershot recital approach, this one works. If you like either Von Otter (and how could you not?) or Pinnock, this disc is self-recommending.
