There's much more to Finnish music that just Sibelius. Klami was a contemporary and colleague of the great Finnish composer, and his talents where actually complementary. His basic aesthetic orientation was French, while Sibelius's was German. Klami's best work is all descriptive, and superbly orchestrated. It might interest you to compare Klami's tone poem about Lemminkainen's adventures on the island of Saari to Sibelius's on the same subject (one of his so- called Lemminkainen Legends). Sibelius sounds more primeval, giving more of a sense of mood and atmosphere, while Klami's colors are more vivid, his music more physically active and action driven. Both are wonderful, and aren't you glad that you can make the comparison? -- David Hurwitz

This disc contains Klami's two finest orchestral works: Kalevala Suite and Sea Pictures. This latter work shows Ravel's influence very clearly. Its last movement sounds just like Boléro sort of played sideways! There are also clear similarities to the Rhapsodie espagnole, and it's no disparagement of Klami to say that his music has the same brilliance and refinement as the French master's. The major work on this disc, however, is the Kalevala Suite, an evocation of Finnish mythology that really does rank with the great achievements of Sibelius. All of these pieces are very well performed and recorded by a fine Finnish orchestra under the legendary baton of Finnish conductor Jorma Panula. Klami's a terrific composer. You'll really like him. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
