Cornucopia for Copland Completists.......2005-02-09
This is a collection for the true Copland fan. Because you don't buy this one for the serviceable but undistinguished renditions of the famous pieces - Fanfare, Appalachian Spring, Rodeo and El Salon Mexico. For those, look no further than Bernstein's seminal recordings with the NY Phil plus his second version of Appalachian Spring with the LA Phil, as well as Slatkin's with St. Louis. What a die-hard Copland-phile cannot live without, though, are the superb renditions of many of Copland's lesser-known but terrific compositions here that are rare or would otherwise take several purchases to cover: Mehta's Lincoln Portrait that is taut, brassy, dramatic and perfectly patriotic - with Gregory Peck fittingly authoritative and sounding close to what we would imagine when Abe Lincoln speaks; possibly the best version out there of Copland's underperformed masterpiece Quiet City from Marriner - just listen to the exquisite trumpet playing!; a charming Marilyn Horne singing excerpts from Old American Songs - poignantly evoking colonial Americana; Dorati's perceptive and atmospheric Dance Symphony; and a colorful Music for Movies from the London Sinfonietta playing highly American music with European flair. Furthermore, the Decca engineers provide demonstration-quality sound. Subtract one star for the casual Copland listener, but for the enthusiast: ****
Other references: Recommended by Gramophone, Penguin Guide and Classical Music: Third Ear.
Best Fanfare out there.......2003-05-19
The Fanfare for a Common Man could arguably be the best recording out there. Despite it's faster tempo, the LA Phil brass play it almost flawlessly(there are two notes of the entire song that the trumpets don't quite lock in). The trombones and percussion are phenomenol as well as the horns. The Appalachian Spring is done superbly also. The lesser known songs were a fresh introduction to less familiar Copland. The entire set(with the exception of the Lincoln portrait and Rodeo) is great. Definately recommended.
A good selection of Copland pieces........2001-12-09
I bought this 2-CD set because I needed a good selection of Copland pieces. It has served that purpose well. It features several less familiar pieces as well the popular Copland works. The CD contains Fanfare, Rodeo, Quiet City, El Salon Mexico and I Bought Me a Cat (to name just a few). The performance of Appalachian Spring (by Zubin Mehta and the LA Philharmonic Orchestra) is alright but not as good as the one where Copland himself conducts the Boston Symphony (check out that one on the RCA Victor Gold Seal Label -- it's marvelous). This CD does have a very beautiful performance of Portrait of Lincoln, narrated by Gregory Peck. He narrates with great dignity. I've heard at least one version where the Lincoln quotes are delivered in shouts as if from a pulpit. This one is more subtle.
Buy the Dorati on its own, elsewhere.......2000-06-24
The only redeeming value this grabbag has are the excellent Dorati presentations. The rest is middlin' to start and it tapers off from there. It tapers very far with the raw sound of Horne and the at-sea concepts of a young Zubin Mehta who obviously recorded this material before he was ready. His LA Phil isn't anything to write home about, either, which makes you wonder how just a few years earlier it was so superb for Leinsdorf and Wallenstein.
The manufacturer is just trying to make hay on some old recordings here. Dorati's are fairly recent, though, and you can buy his things elsewhere, so WHY would anyone want this?

Aaron Copland: Essential Classics.......2003-11-21
This excellent introduction to the symphonic Copland repackages an earlier "Decca Double Decker" (see B000004284). Deleted are "Old American Songs" and added are "Billy the Kid" and "Danzon Cubano". These recordings were made from 1969-1994. The sonics are exemplary. The performances are all very good to excellent. Everyone has their personal favorites of these works so your mileage may vary.
Dorati & Detroit SO > Rodeo, El Solon Mexico, Dance Symphony. Howarth & London Sinfonietta > Music for the Movies. Marriner & The Academy > Quiet City. Metha & LAPO > Fanfare for the Common Man, Appalachian Spring, Lincoln Portrait with Gregory Peck, narrator. Philip Jones Brass Ensemble > Ceremonial Fanfare. Zinman & Baltimore SO > Billy the Kid, Danzon Cubano.
Gregory Peck comes across very, very well. Warm, personal, forthright. Worth the price of the disc just to hear him deliver the words wrapped in Copland's music as directed by Metha and performed by the LA Philharmonic Orchestra.
Don't expect any copious liner notes here -- there aren't any. Just a listing of what's what and who did what. Two panels of the folded sheet are needlessly occupied by advertising other "essential" CDs. I would gladly rip them out if I didn't like the overall design so much. The art direction and design of the package is stellar but lacks "essential" or any background information.
Unless I'm mistaken, there are 5 "hits" on the first disc and 6 on the second. That's 11. The subtitle here is "12 Greatest Hits". Am I missing something?
Still, judging by what's here, the selections and performances, an excellent compilation. I'm glad to have it.

Customer Reviews:
Simply The Best........2004-11-01
I bought this collection for the Introduction & Allegro cut alone. William Boughton's performance takes what is already a jewel and polishes it to an incredible brilliance and beauty. I own many of the Introduction & Allegro versions done by others, and none of them can hold a candle to this performance. Boughton ruins it for anyone else! This one cut is worth the price for the whole collection, plus you get 4 discs of other Elgar treasures as a bonus! and there isnt a runt in the litter.

Music Makers.......2007-05-16
Beautiful music and singing!!! What a treasure that more people should know about. I knew I liked Elgar's Cello Concerto and Sea Pictures, but was unaware of his other works until a friend introduced this to me. Irwin's voice is seamless and warm and lovely.
BRIDGEWATER TROUBLES OVER.......2007-03-15
In my experience Elgar seems to have been more difficult to record than his contemporary big-orchestra merchants Mahler and Strauss. This recording captures his sound better than any I have yet heard, and it is a particular pleasure to me to say that. The recording was done exactly two years ago in Manchester's Bridgewater Hall. I still lament the abandonment of my beloved Free Trade Hall to commercial usage, and I detest the Bridgewater Hall, a flashy vulgar and energy-profligate monstrosity. However what the Bridgewater undoubtedly has is magnificent acoustics, and I can now enjoy those without having to go to the wretched place. The biggest problem in recording Elgar comes with his choral works. These demand an exceptionally wide compass of volume, and when I set that high enough to obtain a satisfactory pianissimo in, say, Rattle's fine Gerontius, I'm blasted out of the room at `Praise to the holiest'. Admittedly, The Music Makers does not go to such extremes, but the problem is of the same nature, and I was able to use a high volume-setting without fear.
Of the four works presented here, I'm not sure which the general description `self-portrait' is meant to apply to. The author of the liner-note has a more inclusive notion of that than I have so far had, telling us baldly that Falstaff is `undoubtedly...a self-portrait'. I remain highly unconvinced, and the only item on this disc that seems to qualify beyond doubt is The Music Makers. Froissart is a fine vigorous and typical piece, but largely extrovert in tone. Dream Children is nostalgic but hardly self-portraiture, and the Bach arrangement is a portrait of Bach. The Music Makers is the real self-portrait, and it is one of Elgar's greatest and most characteristic compositions. Elgar's religious faith may have been as central to his identity as Bach's was to his, but Bach's unshakable certainty is worlds away from Elgar's unsettled searching. He scored a bullseye with his choice of text in this instance. Elgar had nothing like Britten's literary discernment, but O'Shaughnessy's poem cries out for musical setting. It is the song of the musicians of destiny, sympathetic to humanity but remote from us, and while O'Shaughnessy is no great writer there is true and genuine poetry in this nebulous but evocative ode, and it brings out the best in Elgar as he himself said the (far inferior) text of Gerontius did. His unquiet soul was stirred by its sad but serene message, and the quotations from his own works as it goes along give us clues, imprecise but sufficient, to the thoughts that arose in him.
The performances seem admirable to me, and it has been heartening to hear the Halle forces in such good form these days. Both Froissart and the Bach transcription are full of vigour and forward impetus, and right from the start of Froissart I was daring to hope that at long last I was going to hear an Elgar recording where both performance and recorded sound would combine as I want them instead of being a thing of my dreaming like the music makers' inspiration in the poem. Dream Children is beautifully tender and quiet, full of understanding of its special mood. I held my breath as The Music Makers got underway. The orchestral sound at the start was excellent, powerful but not overpowering, but I needed to hear how the recording coped with the chorus and it seems to me that it copes admirably. Mark Elder does well, very well indeed, in shaping and moulding the work, and Jane Irwin has a beautiful voice, a real sense of the work's idiom, and fine control over her sustained quiet notes.
All the above has been written after just two hearings. I have been particularly lucky in that except for the Bach arrangement the other pieces here have managed unaccountably to escape my collection until now, and now I start with them as I would want them. At the moment my confidence is high that my first impression is going to stick. If you choose to obtain the disc, be bold about setting the volume fairly high. Elgar's sound needs that to give full value, and what value it is.

Wonderfully vivid and exotic........2003-10-07
Renowned accompanist Gerald Moore's comments about the many luminaries of C20 music that he accompanied were both pertinent and perceptive. The effect that Maggie Teyte's singing had on him, he said, made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. Listening to this excellent anthology, you might register a similar response. Try two of the songs by Reynaldo Hahn, in which she is accompanied by Gerald Moore, and you will be aware of singing that is at once a crie de coeur and ecstatic.
At an advanced age, Maggie Teyte proved to be a feisty and imperious subject in many radio interviews. She had much to tell, of course, about many of the composers with whom she worked, some of whose songs she sings here. She also admitted that recordings such as these, made late in her career, carried her name to all parts of the world and opened doors into large, well-filled concert halls. The vocal longevity was remarkable. Her last recording here, Ravel's Sheherazade, was made in her 60th year. One critic welcomed it with the description "wonderfully vivid and exotic", and that is how it still sounds to me.
You'll find many ratities here, including a clean copy of a discarded duet Maggie Teyte recorded with John McCormack. The Irish tenor holds the last note for almost half a bar longer than Maggie Teyte does - an irregularity that possibly caused the recording to remain unissued for many years.
Two-and-a-half hours of beauty.......2003-06-02
This two CD issue from Naxos of singing by Maggie Teyte (1888-1976) is a treat for two different audiences. For those of us who have long known and loved her voice, it is 2 1/2 hours of mostly French mélodies and arias sung as only she could sing them, in a pristine restoration by that wizard, Ward Marston. For those who don't know her singing, it is a fabulous introduction at budget price to a singer who put the stamp of her unmistakable personality on everything she sang with great musicality, intelligence, impeccable diction, and purity of tone throughout her range.
Included are fifteen mélodies by Debussy (Fetes galantes I & II, Trois Chansons de Bilitis, Le Promenoir de deux amants, et al.) accompanied by the inimitable Alfred Cortot. Almost all the other piano-accompanied songs are with Gerald Moore, that paragon who accompanied every important artist of his era. Also included are Ravel's Schéhérazade, some of the best known Fauré songs (Aprés un reve, Nell, Clair de lune), the delectable Psyché of Paladilhe, and three by Reynaldo Hahn (Offrande, L'Heure exquise, and Si mes vers avaient des ailes). There are assorted other songs by Purcell, Martini, Pergolesi, a couple of selections from Berlioz's Nuit d'été (Absence, and Spectre de la rose), Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Chausson, Duparc (Phydilé, L'Ivitation au voyage), Offenbach (Tu n'es pas beau), Messager. It ends with several songs in English by Elgar (Pleading), Quilter (the exquisite Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal), Thomas's Night Hymn at Sea (with John McCormack, and never before released), a song from a Kennedy Russell operetta, and Romberg's Deep in My Heart, Dear.
The last songs were recorded when she was over sixty and one cannot hear any erosion of the voice at all. It had maintained its fragile lyric beauty after more than forty years of performing.
Some of these performances are available on other labels (e.g. Pearl) but at much higher price. You simply cannot go wrong here. One again Naxos has given us an issue of major historical interest. Long may they continue this effort!
Recommended.
