5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-11-07

An excellent compilation of folk tunes and violin concerto adagios, played masterfully by some of the world's most revered musicians. Features modern pieces (Korngold, Barber), which are a personal favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks you Decca.......2005-01-23

My daughter is a violin student of 7 years and she has played 3 or 4 of these pieces for recitals. I bought the CD's so she could become familiar with the pieces as she was learning to play them. Now I find myself listening to the CD's almost every night when I go for my end of the day drive to relax. My favorites are the Mozart Concerto in G, the Mendelssohn Concerto in E minor and Beethoven's Romance in F on disc 2, but all the songs are exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite music for the soul.......2004-06-14

These CDs have the most incredible selections of music on them. Listening to the violins has enabled me to complete papers for my doctoral level classes without the usual neck aches. This is soothing, exquistie music for the soul! Lovely!!

5 out of 5 stars Indeed a joy forever!.......2003-05-22

Before buying this 2 CD set,I've read Reviews by Chicagodreamer,
who rated it as "Highly, highly recommended." His laudatory recommentation, I must say, is found "well justified."

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite collection & performances, unbelievable value!!!.......2002-01-15

"Over 2 l/2 hours of the world's most beautiful music." These words on the cover are very close to true. What an incredible value this collection is!! So many of these compilations of this sort are cheaply produced, and those "greatest hits" collections are one trite piece after another -- after a while one runs screaming to the stereo to shut it off. However, this collection is top-notch, and the performers they chose are masterful musicians at the top of their game. Every selection is lovely, each one unfolding after the other in a sublime slide show of exquisite compositions performed by legends. This is TWO CDs of sparkling performances composed and performed by masters. There is not a bad selection or a piece of inferior quality in the entire lot.

The violin is an extraordinary instrument that, when played correctly, can pluck the heartstrings and stir the soul. It is played perfectly by each puppetmaster on each one of these wonderful pieces, and the experience of listening to this collection is an exquisite journey for the heart and spirit. Looking for a fantastic collection of exquisite pieces written and performed by genius? It's here. Highly, highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2007-05-10

To say that I love this disc would be an understatement. I have probably listened to it 500 times. To comment on just a few of the tracks...
The "Praeludium and Allegro" is definitely the best recording anyone (except maybe Kreisler!) has ever done. The praeludium, which is almost all quarter notes, is often just blindly sawed out. Midori treats each note individually. The allegro is also nice - not rushed at all. The staggeringly difficult Skryabin-Szigeti "Etude in Thirds" tossed off with impeccable technique and spotless intonation. Sarasate's "Habanera" sparkles with a decisive 'Spanish' flavor. Elgar's "Chanson de Matin" is just plain beautiful. Also nice are inclusions of some numbers not heard hardly ever, including Bacewicz's "Oberek #2" mazurka and the Shostakovich preludes. Robert McDonald, definitely one of the best, is the able pianist for all the numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Even for a trained jazz musician who thinks classical artists are overhyped, this stands out as one of the best albums........2007-04-11

Let's be honest--any kid with a violin who ever set foot in a conservatory thinks (s)he's a prodigy, the next Mehta or Yo Yo Ma, while they play the same old tired music everyone else plays, exactly as the greats play it, with hardly a shred of originality that doesn't arise out of an inability to replicate the 'masters' as well as their CD players (and that goes for jazz musicians too, but they don't get as snobby about it). The musicians who are truly great don't have any sort of attitude about their playing or their music--they just play, and they play anything, and it's great.

Midori has been one such great artist from early on. She simply had the knack. You would still want to listen to her if she was half as skilled. Every decent musician practices assiduously, seeks out the best people to learn from, makes sacrifices in life just for the chance to play for a living (even weddings and strip clubs if need be), but few have 'the knack.'

I don't know if Midori has a similar story, nor does it really matter in terms of actually making music. I know her parents moved from Osaka to the States with her when she was about ten just so she could pursue her potential--as all great students have great parents. I'm sure she didn't just pop out of the womb playing violin. But, like I wrote above, she's got the knack that you can't get through practice or training. She's just plain great.

Yes, I'm bored by classical music in general. I like 'good' music regardless of style though, and this album is so far beyond good that it belongs in whatever collection of immortal artist you may have--say: Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Shaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and--even if you have no other classical music in your collection--Midori.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-08-11

Midori produces some amazing sounds out of her violin!
You cant go wrong with Encore! Shes brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable listening.......2005-09-24

I enjoyed this cd especially the first three pieces. Midori played Sarasate and Paganini pretty well.

4 out of 5 stars very interesting.......2005-09-13

I as watching (and listening!) her play live in Dubrovnik this summer. In this record she is equally brilliant as she is when playing live!

4 out of 5 stars A Vengerov Sampler: Life is just a box of chocolates...........2005-08-16

For some reason I have always been averse to recordings of single movements from other disparate recordings which usually makes the spotlighted artist seem a bit crass and commercial. But amazingly enough this THE ROAD I TRAVEL featuring Maxim Vengerov is anything but that! Perhaps it is just that this young violinist weaves such a spell that little tidbits from here and there seem justifiable: then perhaps it is just a forgiving ear that can jump around his 'Road' and share the good memories.

The selections vary from concerto movements from Shostakovich, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky to movements from sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms to oddities like the Franz Waxman 'Carmen Fantasia'. Different conductors and orchestras and pianists partner each excerpt. But it just comes together. This is a fine recording for friends who don't understand the fanaticism of Vengerov's following. It makes a fine calling card for the virtuoso! Grady Harp, August 05

2 out of 5 stars Over hyped former prodigy.......2005-02-10

Maxim is a over hyped former child prodigy. Among his generation, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell, Kyoko Takezawa, Chee Yun, Christian Tetzlaff's intonation and music are more pleasing to my ears. Why I cannot find Kyoko and Chee Yun's records.

5 out of 5 stars vengerov is the best.......2004-09-02

Wow... I've been a huge fan of Vengerov's for about 6 years now, but he continues to surprise me. When I first heard him play, I thought he was the best romanticist I had ever heard, but he probably wouldn't be good at much else. Then I heard him play unaccompanied Bach on a period instrument, and it was pristine. I had never heard him play any classical music, but thought that there was NO WAY someone could be a master of all three broad musical styles, but once again Vengerov surpasses my EXTREMELY lofty expectations and proves that he is a master of the classical style as well. These recordings of Mozart's sonatas are among the best i've ever heard, in every way. His technical proficiency is beyond reproach, and his style is flawless from beginning to end. This CD makes me want to dust off all of my Mozart sonatas and start playing them again!! I purchased this disc for the sole purpose of hearing Vengerov play Mozart, and I'm thrilled that I did so. This is another new Vengerov purchase that is easily one of my favorite CDs in my collection. I'm beginning to think that he can do no wrong!

4 out of 5 stars virtuoso vs. choice of music ?.......2004-02-12

While the violinist was excellent I thought his choice of music was not. I only recognized two or three of the selections that were offered on this CD. Needless to say I was a bit disappointed that he had not chosen more recognizable selections. Since I purchased this CD because of the "Meditation"piece from "Thais" I suppose I got what I wanted but, nevertheless I am still disappointed in the CD as a whole. I suppose it is alright for someone with more esthetic tastes than mine. As for Vengerov "B R A V O"!!!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a Five-Star Violinist.......2003-05-30

And this CD is one of his best. Be sure the bass on your system is turned up and get ready to spend one of the most enjoyable hours of your life.

4 out of 5 stars Great Classic Themes.......2006-09-11

This is an awesome collection of unsettling melodies from the masters, not just some horror movie themes (though it does have some Psyco). You will end up playing a round of "Where have I heard that score before?" because these melodies are very iconic.
The only complaint is that the track listing is somewhat occult. One has to use amazon.com's track listings and fill in the numbers.
Still, this is a great buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!.......2006-05-18

I would like to begin my review of this wonderful CD by stating that I am not a "kid." (unless you consider a 14-year-old to still be a child) I am, however, too lazy too start a new Amazon.com account before typing about this great CD.

Now then... In my eyes, this CD recieved 5 stars because of (what else!) the music. The quality of the music to be more specific. The sound of it was great and the selection of the pieces was pure genius. My personal favorite would have to be a three-way tie between Bach's Toccata and Fugue, Dukas' Sorceror's Apprentice, and Stravinsky's The Right of Spring.

I will leave you tonight with one final thought... Is it just me, or are most of the pieces from "Fantasia"? At least 7 (!) of the pieces are from that age-old classic. I think it's funny that they are on a collection such as "The Most Frightening Music in the Universe". And could the cover art be any worse?!

All in all it is a great CD to add to any collection. (and cheap!) Thanks!

Maxim Vengerov's splendiferous Strad pours reedy-rich tones from its lower register and sings the sweetest high notes this side of Jascha Heifetz, without the least hint of an undesirable sound or mistuned note. Vengerov's impeccable technique and mature musicianship consistently place him at the top of today's young generation of violinists. Here he plumbs Prokofiev's emotionally charged concerto and finds its unadorned essence--especially memorable in the sensuous slow movement and the exuberant finale. The Shostakovich benefits from a confident, commanding style that leaves us utterly convinced that this lesser-known concerto is a work of far greater substance than we thought. As conductor, Mstislav Rostropovich's knowing hand is everywhere, helping to bring home the penetrating drama of these works by two of his former teachers. While the sound is not as vibrant and balanced as we would like, its center-stage placement of Vengerov and his violin is a feature we can't help but applaud. --David Vernier

    Amazon.com

Hot on the heels of their coupling of Shostakovich's and Prokofiev's First Violin Concertos comes this welcome sequel. The header says it all. Prokofiev's Second Concerto is the more popular of his two, while the situation is reversed with Shostakovich. In fact, his Second Concerto is all but unknown, which is surprising because the First Concerto is a much larger, more difficult work than its witty, lyrical successor. This recording will, hopefully, give the piece a chance to make some new friends among music lovers, particularly as the performances are absolutely first class in every respect. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Vengerov at the top of the tree.......2006-02-24

Those of us who have been around for over 70 years will have to admit that there has never been a violinist who more sensationally is able to make music at this level. He has the left hand of a Heifitz, the heart of a russian gypsy and the soul of a musician. It is truly remarkable to find in one player the best of all the things required to be great - technique, heart, soul, musicianship, understanding and an ability to create a large catalogue of sounds which seem inevitable. These preformances surely will never be bettered and rarely, if ever, equalled.

    5 out of 5 stars A lyrical, un-Russian approach.......2005-10-07

Anyone familiar with the playing styles of Oistrakh, Kogan, and more recent emigrees like Rapin, Spivakov, and Rachlin will instantly hear that Vengerov is not giving a typical Russian reading on this CD. His playing is not aggressive, he doesn't aim for a fat tone in every bar, and he exchanges virtuosic extroversion for inward, lyrical playing as often as not. The Shostakovich and Prokofiev concerti are usually turned into showpieces, whereas on this CD they become personal expressions.

That's really my only comment. The other reviewers have already praised Vengerov's playing. He is in a league ahead of Rostropovich, who is an effective but not inspired conductor. Together, they tame the biting contrasts often brought out in the first movement of the Prokofiev Second, and although Rostropovich can be a bit slack at times--no worse than Previn in the Prokofiev works, however--Vengerov triumphs in every respect. (If only the last movement of the Prokofiev wasn't such a slow poke.)

My remarks apply mostly to the popular Prokofiev Second; the Shostakovich Second has largely fallen out of the repertoire, being a bit too austere, aggressive, and melodically indifferent to capture audience approval, in the West, at least.

5 out of 5 stars Two Wondrous Works of the Violin Concerto Repertoire.......2005-02-23

There is something very grand about the collaboration between Maxim Vengerov and Mstislav Rostropovich captured by Teldec on this CD, a fine and even more distinctive pairing of concerti than their previous disc (Violin Concerti Nos. 1 by Prokofiev and Shostakovich). Though Rostropovich began his performing life as a cellist, he now is much sought after as a conductor. But perhaps by his beginning his career as a soloist he has this special affinity in collaboration as an accompanist for other soloists!

It would be difficult to imagine more brilliant readings of these two concerti (each No. 2 in the respective composer's catalogues). Vengerov plays with sparkling precision on the fiery movements, but seems to blossom with the slow movements, music that conveys so much of the Russian soul that the beauty here is nearly unbearable. Rostropovich makes a sensitive collaborator, drawing empathetic phrasing from the London Symphony Orchestra.

Another factor that lends to the success of this CD is the quality of sound produced by the technical wizardry of Teldec engineers. The violin is never too far forward in the miking and especially in the Shostakovich the soloist deems to come form the middle of the orchestral sound.

In all this recording is the gold standard for these appropriately paired concerti.. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, February 2005

    5 out of 5 stars fabulous 20th century concertos.......2004-08-03

This is a great pairing of two Russian composers who have much in common, having come from the same turbulent era of history, but who are so unique in style and sound.
Prokofiev (1891-1953) wrote this concerto in the mid '30s, and it shares some melodic influences from another composition of the same period, his glorious ballet score for "Romeo and Juliet"; there are many slow passages full of yearning and pathos, intertwined with an up-tempo happier mood.
The Shostakovich (1906-1975) piece is more aggressive, vibrant and modern, written in 1967, and dedicated to the great David Oistrakh. It has a heavenly Adagio, and is my favorite of the two concertos.

Maxim Vengerov is the ideal violinist for these works, full of youthful energy (he was only 22 when this recording were made in 1996) and Russian soul. Mstislav Rostropovich comes from a similar time period as the composers, and knew them as a young musician, giving the first performances of some of their cello compositions.
This is a second team effort for Vengerov and Rostropovich, having recorded the Concerto # 1 of both Prokofiev and Shostakovich two years earlier, and garnering the coveted Gramaphone "Record of the Year" award. Both recordings are a wonderful addition to any 20th century classical violin collection.

The liner notes by Christian Kubnt point out a coincidence, of how Rostropovich was 20 years old when he met Prokofiev in 1947, the same age as Vengerov when he started recording with Rostropovich forty-seven years later, and how it seems to be a Russian tradition "for different generations to inspire one another in this way and for them to spur each other on to exceptional achievements", and exceptional achievements both this CD and its predecessor are. The sound is good, and total playing time 62'18.

4 out of 5 stars Another excellent interpretation by Vengerov.......2003-07-10

Vengerov has a marvelous of way of interpreting pieces in such musical ways that I feel Heifetz lacked. However I give this particular CD only 4 stars because I found that the pieces he played were not very entertaining. Only hardcore Shostakovich or Prokofiev should buy this CD. I recommend buying one of Vengerov's Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto CD's.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2006-08-12

I must say I enjoyed pretty much all of the songs on this album. "Victory" by Bond was the only thing they shouldn't have included, since it doesn't quite qualify as "classical" and wasn't what I would call a hit, anyway. True, it was instrumental, but real classical music is of a higher caliber. ("Now We Are Free" isn't quite classical either but it's not 'commercialized' like "Victory.") I really liked "Duel of the Fates," "Maria," "Now We Are Free," and "O Fortuna." Those were my favorites out of a great selection of songs. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't really care for full-blown classical.

3 out of 5 stars Eh... it's okay for the young........2006-02-03

I bought this cd when it first came out, as my first real taste of anything even remotely classical. And for that purpose, it works. For someone getting into classical seriously though, I'd start somewhere else.

    4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect..........2005-09-17

aside from the second track (Bond-Victory) and the title track from the movie Braveheart, this is a decent classical album. The Bond-Victory selection is embarrassing commercial crap.

    3 out of 5 stars okay.......2002-11-08

This is a perfect album for someone who doesn't like classical music. It's almost like classical crib notes. The mix is great for dinner or party music but I was left wanting more. I'm not sure of it, but it felt like each song was shortened some how.

    4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect!!!!.......2002-01-17

This album contains many of contemporary classic music's finest songs sung by many of the finest singers in the world. Bocelli, Brightman, Fleming, Watson, just to name a few. The problem here is with the opener, where the song is sung by the execrable Charlotte Church. Its a mystery to everyone I know who has heard this CD why this song is not sung by Sarah Brightman who did the original and defining version. The rendition by Church simply demonstrates her lack of vocal control and emotion. Even a cover by Renee Fleming is far superior to that of Church's. The only thing I can think of here is that since the album is put out by Sony, and Charlotte is owned by Sony, they had to find some place for her songs after paying her so much money.
If not for Church poisoning the well on track 1, this album is an absolute 5-star

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Profile of passion.......2000-02-20

I have not yet been in the right place at the right time to see this film but I have followed Nadja's career since she won the Naumberg competition. This is a beautiful and lovingly compiled profile of her life in music, as selected from her recording history to date (not included is the astonishing recent album of gypsy music with the Assad Brothers). I knew that the creators of this soundtrack had a spiritual affinity with their subject when I saw the Souvenir de Florence second movement selection, the Sibelius second movement, the Shostakovich Burlesque and the Rachmaninov vocalise - pieces that capture the Nadja that has always captured me. Indeed, for us long-time fans, and for anyone, this is a wonderful souvenir album of one of the most soul-possessing fiddlers of our time.

    5 out of 5 stars Nadja - breakthrough artist.......1999-12-30

The picture on this album cover is horrible... gotta say this up front.

Now, if I could only give a one sentence appraisal of both this CD and the documentary, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is the one person, the one superior artist who is also a "real" person (well, who let us see that), who could possibly reach out and grab the non-classical music enthusiast and make them thirst for classical music, because they will want more of her music.

And, if there were no other reason, I love the album, but then it and the film it stems from are so rich on so many other facets. The music itself is perfect beyond reproach.

For those of us who were never completely classically inclined, like myself, we are presented with a whole person here. Nadja is not stiff and unreachable, but rather, someone who is so very much an "average joe" who loves her family and treasures her friends, perhaps with an extremely heightened awareness that we would all kill for but might kill us if we ever got there without a likewise outlet as she has with her music, but also with a "who you lookin' at" New York accent.

I'd like to see Paola Di Florio's documentary of Nadja, "Speaking in Strings" as required viewing, world-wide. I think then that classical music would have a whole new audience. Not a doubt in my mind.

Until I saw "Speaking in Strings", I thought all classical soloists were people with sticks up their behinds who talked down their noses at everyone else. Shows you what I know.

Her music reduces me to tears, in a way I never thought possible (there's an old phrase that goes -- "This guy not only knows nothing, he don't even suspect nothing").. and that was really honestly me and classical music.

I can't even watch TV now without hearing the violin in the music of shows or commercials and then instantly switching to the stereo to this or another of her albums to hear Nadja, to hear the really good stuff. I want to feel it now, and no longer being fed junk or be a passive observer.

Just my opinion, but we've shortchanged ourselves in what "feeds" us. I never knew it was missing, until I saw this documentary, which led me to buy the album, which now, happily takes me from smiles to tears throughout. So that now I am listening to it all. A whole new world has been opened up to me.

So, I give this album as many stars as there are in the heavens. I've gotten a great gift, and if I go any farther, I'll ruin it with words.

Thank you Paola and Nadja for taking the time, the caring, and to Nadja especially for letting us so deeply into her life to make sure we "got it."

Nadja, I "got it", and I now totally believe that line in the film where you say that great moments we all have are fleeting and they are only good if you "share it." You sure have shared it. Thanks.

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo Nadja!.......1999-10-23

Saw the film...now have the album...love both. She's an inspiration to all of us who live in the fast lane...both emotionally and professionally... Allegro Vivace Con Mucho Brio!

PS: Per the previous reviewers comment, in the days of Mozart/Beethoven, etc., it was quite customary to perform sections of long-form works independently when playing concerts...which just confirms by example that there's nothing "wrong" or low-brow about doing it now, either in concert or on a recording.

4 out of 5 stars Bits and pieces winningly played.......1999-10-07

The EMI release of (72435 56908-2) is subtitled "A Musical Companion to the Film." So I assume the music herein is not from the film but a sampling that represents, as the soloist is quoted as saying, "the variety and growth of my musical life so far." The writer is Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and the film is to be about her life as an artist. But none of that need concern us here. As a rule I object to movements being played out of the context of the work from which they come--e.g., the Adagio movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto--but in this case the opening selection, Saint-Saens "The Swan," was so winningly played that I found myself liking this program very much indeed. Other composers represented here are listed above in this website. The artist is given more than adequate assistance from several pianists, chamber players, and the London Symphony Orchestra, making me suspect the selections are drawn from earlier recordings. Nevertheless, for those who like violin music in general and do not care if you hear an entire composition or just part of one, or for those who simply admire this artist, I can recommend this CD.
