The first classical music I remember hearing was on movie soundtracks--the animated cartoons of my childhood in which the characters would chase, trick, and bash each other to the tunes of Liszt's Hungarian rhapsodies and overtures by Rossini and Suppe. This music was used not because it was great, but because it was full of action and out of copyright--a lot cheaper (and probably better) than hiring a living composer. Woody Allen may have a nobler motivation in his decision to use classics on his soundtracks, and his selection of music, from Bach to Prokofiev, is more sophisticated. This superbly miscellaneous collection will be full of happy discoveries for many listeners. It may also help you to identify tunes that you hear in a movie and can't get out of your mind. --Joe McLellan

For the Weill Fan Who Wants More of His Music.......2005-08-18

I just finished reviewing a new CD from Naxos that contains Weill's rarely heard two symphonies plus a suite fashioned from the music he wrote for a Broadway show (after he'd emigrated to the US in the wake of the Nazi horror) and it reminded me of this set that I have owned for twenty-five years in its LP form. On a whim I bought this mid-price 2CD version and was thrilled to reacquaint myself with the fascinating music contained herein. This is the Weill we know and love from 'Dreigroschenoper' and 'Mahagonny.' The other pieces included here, even including the violin concerto which was not so pleasing to the previous reviewer, are quintessential Weill. The Violin Concerto (interestingly for violin and wind instruments), frankly, is the one I like best, but I think all these performances could hardly be bettered. David Atherton leads a very alert bunch of musicians in the London Sinfonietta and they clearly really enjoy playing this music. And the recorded sound, from the early 1980s if I'm not mistaken, is clear as a bell and sounds absolutely modern.

This truly is not to be missed. It has been treasured in its earlier format by Weill lovers for a quarter century and will continue to be held in special regard by those in the know.

A Pleasant Surprise and a New Discovery.......2000-06-15

I was in the mood for a modern violin concerto recording, and glowing critical reviews of this set prompted me to purchase it. Scanning straight over to the concerto, and giving it a few minutes listening, I was almost immediately put off. Avant-garde it definitely sounded to these ears, whose taste in modern concertos leans more towards Barber or even Glass (very straightforward works, with immediately accessible lyricism). Weill's concerto, on the other hand, sounded simply wild and aimless, with no particular "big tune" or melody to it. Almost disgusted, I shelved the discs for a few days.

On a whim, though, I came back to it and listened to the rest from the beginning... tremendous! The Threepenny Suite can simply be described as "fun," with an incisiveness and "swing" not to be found elsewhere. My two other favorites, The Little Mahagonny and Happy End, are characterfully, sometimes campily, but always fascinatingly sung. The two female singers, especially, easily differentiated, have added a smooth, sultry quality to their characterizations. And the "megaphone" effect at the end of Little Mahagonny is thrilling, even a little frightening.

Weill's entertaining suite from The Threepenny Opera is a real charmer. Scored for winds, brass, percussion, bandoneon, and banjo, it contains all of the best tunes, from the famous "Ballad of Mack the Knife," to the "Kanonen-Song." Milhaud's Création du Monde is an authentic distillation of the style of Harlem jazz--probably the best such piece ever attempted by a classical composer. It's a ballet that has since made a life for itself in the concert hall. At the original performance, the moment of creation was marked by the inflation of animal balloons, and the hiss of compressed air drowned out the music! Fortunately there's no such problem here. A lovely, nonessential CD.......2003-04-28

The performance here is lovely, and the sound recording is very, very good. Weisberg and the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble really do bring these recordings to life.

Furthermore, La Creation du Monde is a great piece. It manages to combine early jazz with Classical in a remarkably logical mixture. The result is a fun, at times giddy piece of music...which also has truly breathtaking moments of solemn beauty.

However, this piece accounts for 15 minutes. The rest of this (rather short) CD is a suite from The Threepenny Opera. While the performance itself is fine, I don't see why one would be particularly driven to listen to a suite from the work. The opera itself is fine, but without the singers, the music runs a bit bland at times. Thus, saying this is probably the best recording of the Threepenny suite is sort of like saying a certain building is the tallest building in Omaha. It may be true, but does it really matter?

Brecht sings!.......2003-02-02

Come on! A chance to hear Bertolt Brecht sing his own Mack the Knife before Bobby Darrin messed it up! How many CDs are going to have that?!

Some good, some bad, all Weill........2003-01-02

Kurt Weill and Broadway fans will probably feel an intense need to have this album, and I'm not sure I'd be able to dissuade them. There's some good stuff on this recording, to be sure, but a great deal of it is in German, and much of it might not interest even someone with just a casual interest in the material chronicled. While there's a strong representation of The Threepenny Opera (all in German), the selections from Lady in the Dark featuring Gertrude Lawrence and Danny Kaye are vital, as are the tracks of Mary Martin and Kenny Baker performing selected numbers from One Touch of Venus. (You can also hear Walter Huston performing a song from Knickerbocker Holiday, though it is, for some strange reason, "The Scars." It's an interesting historical record, but not a great song.) Lotte Lenya also sings some as well, which is a treat, but overall, this is a highly variable recording. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting beforehand, or you may be likely to find yourself--as I do--listening to only half the album.

NOT THE BEST.......2001-03-24

Certainly, Julia Migenes has one of the most beautiful voices of the women who have recorded Brecht and Weill's ballet/cantata/suite of songs/theatrical-musical piece....or, as Weill called it "ballet chante" (a ballet with singing). But I wonder if "beauty" is what is needed in this, one of my favorite pieces of music. I have four different recordings and, although I would never say that this one is badly done, it is my least favorite simply because Migenes sings so prettily and so carefully and operatically. The Lotte Lenya recording sets the standard. No one comes close to her biting, rough-textured voice and dramatic abilities....but Ute Lemper comes close, Gisela May comes closer and Marianne Faithfull comes closest. The Faithfull performance has the added benefit of being done in a fine English translation. The London Symphony Orchestra, under Michael Tilson Thomas, is the true star of this CD. The orchestra's work is really wonderful, full and rich. Tilson Thomas has gone for a grand performance and it works up to a point. Weill wrote an intimate piece of music for orchestra and a total of 5 singers: The soprano and a male quartet.

About twenty years ago, there were rumors that George Balanchine was going to revive "The Seven Deadly Sins" for his New York City Ballet and the soprano was to be none other than Bette Midler who has performed some other Weill material excellently. But it was not to be. The performances were cancelled because of a musicians' strike and the revival never came about. If you want to sample this exciting music, try the Lenya recording to hear the original "Anna" and if you'd rather hear it in English, the Marianne Faithfull performance is very, very fine.

This is surely one of Brecht and Weill's most (unfortunately) neglected masterpieces, and definately one of their most unorthodox pieces. Julia Migenes, of course, sings it all divinely, and her dramatic flair and tension is all there, too. Her acting genuinely comes through... it's all there... IN THE VOICE. She doesn't just sing it 'prettily' (i.e., 'blandly') like some pretentious Brechtians would accuse. I like to think of myself as a Brechtian, and generally do prefer the Brecht-Weill pieces to be done by a great actor with a mediocre singing voice. But I also don't mind it when that great actor pays equal (and I mean EQUAL) attention to the music. Brechtian 'scholars' pointing fingers at Migenes, saying that she would make a pretentious operatic sound while singing this piece, would do better to point their fingers elsewhere. Migenes was a sublime interpreter of Weill's music, and I wish that she had performed it more frequently in her prime. The male quartet that makes up the Annas' family (two tenors-brothers, baritone-dad, bass-mom), are all of very good voice (among them vetrans Alan Opie and Robert Tear).

Michael Tilson Thomas leading the London Symphony Orchestra through this piece and EINE KLEINE DREIGOSCHENMUSIK is perfect from beginning to end (the only other performance that I have heard of the THREEPENNY suite that is better is available on the DG Weill box set).

For a long while, this was the only recording of THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS that I knew, and I didn't see how it could possibly get any better. I now own Marianne Faithfull's FABULOUS rendition (recorded in W.H. Auden's top-notch English translation), as well as the always-fabulous Lenya's recording. I love both of them (particularly Faithfull's), but I still find myself pulling out this Migenes rendition and listening to it as I lie bed in the dark: the bittersweet ending of the piece is a heart-stopping, brilliant moment, and I just can't move in the first few moments of silence following the final chord. I really don't think that I could live without this album.
