He may not be much in Beethoven, but Jordi Savall has a good feeling for Bach. His accounts of the Brandenburg Concertos, recorded in 1991 with a top-flight assembly of soloists (including violinist Fabio Biondi and harpsichordist Pierre Hantai) and the combined forces of Le Concert des Nations and La Capella Reial de Catalunya, are robust, bold, and virtuosic. There are no weak hitters in Savall's Franco-Flemish, Ibero-Italian lineup, though as usual his proclivity for working in big spaces imparts a slightly diffuse ambience to the proceedings. In the end this proves not at all detrimental; in fact, the results are rather good. --Ted Libbey
