Great performances of not-so-great music.......2005-07-01

That so many female composers have not been enabled to reach their potential is a great loss to all of us. No doubt we should be reaching into history to discover where female geniuses lay and give them their due, and endeavour not to repeat the mistake. But there is nothing in this collection to convince me that Alma Mahler was one of them.

The prime interest in Alma Mahler is her fascinating life, entwined as it was with Gustav Mahler; Zemlinsky; Kokoschka; Walter Gropius et al. Some mystery is created by the story of Gustav's conditioning their marriage on her ceasing to compose. But was it really any great loss?

These sixteen songs (all that survive of her compositions) are full of stock late-romantic gestures showing Zemlinksy's influence but none of his insight. Her understanding of many of the poems is questionable, as she sails past key moments with little inspiration and lingers in unimportant byways.

Full credit to Panula, who provided the orchestral arrangements and sensitively conducted the Tampere Philharmonic; and Paasikivi, a delightful mezzo; who present these curiosities in the best possible light. Such ideal performances are better than the music deserves. Three stars: an average of five for the performance and one for the music.

Excellent soprano voice, excellent music.......2000-10-28

Somehow the track information for this cd is incomplete: tracks 1, 14-19 are by Toivo Kuula (1883-1918); tracks 2-11 by Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924); tracks 12-13 by Erkki Melartin (1875-1937); tracks 20-21 by Yrjo Kilpinen (1892-1959); tracks 22-26 are folk songs arranged by Ralf Gothoni.

Mattila has a splendid voice even on the high notes - I often am not fond of sopranos but hers is a voice "to die for". The piano accompaniment is unobtrusive. I bought the album for the Kuula and Melartin works and was not disappointed. However, the folk songs are such fun it is hard not to prefer them. This is an excellent introduction to Finnish song.

Heartwarming Finnish Melancholy.......2000-04-07

Karita Mattila's warm voice is the delight of this disc. In other repertoire I have sometimes found her voice cold and lacking in individuality, but on this recital disc, the color of her lovely voice comes through the best.

Subtitled Original Music from Finland, Malta, Israel, and points in between, this CD is possibly the first complete recording for two clarinets and piano. The music spans the late classic to the modern era. The CD contains virtuosic music by legendary 19th century clarinetists Cavallini and Crusell; music with a Mediterranean twist by Amit-Kalev, Feigin, and Camilleri; and works by a Czech Philharmonic pianist and a Dutch bandsman with 400 works.

Eva Wasserman-Margolis received her Masters Degree at the University of Illinois, and at 23, secured the position of principal clarinet with the Haifa Symphony. Main instructor at the Conservatory of Givatayim and Petach Tikva, she has been dedicated to raising a new generation of young clarinet players who now study and perform all over America and Europe. As a performer and/or clinician, Eva has been to the USA, Switzerland, Hungary, Portugal, Belgium, Finland and China.

Luigi Magistrelli, professor of clarinet at the Milan Conservatory, has recorded more than 25 CDs and has collaborated in concert and recordings D. Klöcker, K. Leister and La Scala Philharmonic for Sony Classical, Italian Radio and BBC London, etc. He has also performed and/or taught in Austria, Belgium, France, Finland, Czech Republic, former Yugoslavia, Israel, Africa, USA, Mexico, India, China and Japan.
