The Leipzig ensemble's approach to the Great C Major Quintet is somewhat unconventional. The expression of the first movement is relatively muted, although still effective, setting us up for the harrowing tragedy of the magnificent Adagio that follows. This shifting of weight and emphasis works out very well, and makes our ears even more welcoming to the dark humor of the Scherzo, which sometimes seems almost trivial in its context. Like most very early Schubert, the Overture (written when Schubert was 14) is naive music with touches of genius. (You can ignore the even earlier fragment unless you're writing a thesis.) Another winner in this wonderful series. --Leslie Gerber

Few music lovers know Schubert's earlier string quartets, which were written for family use when he was in his teens. Even the latest of these works, the Quartet No. 9, dates only from Schubert's 18th year. That piece, by far the best music included here, has some real Schubertian qualities; the others are talented imitations of Mozart and Haydn. The Kodály Quartet plays all of this music with vigor and comprehension, and the performances are thoroughly satisfying. They are not as affectionate and songful as the much more expensive series by the Leipzig Quartet on MDG. For a casual investigation of the music, the Naxos disc is more than adequate. For the ultimate performances, go with MDG. --Leslie Gerber

During the course of writing the String Quartet, D. 36, Schubert began to develop his individual voice in chamber music. He was 15 years old. The opening movement is so conventional, and based on such uninspired ideas, that it's hardly listenable even in this alert performance. But by the time we get to the finale, Schubert is having fun with the form, writing with a kind of quirky humor that sounds very original. By the time he wrote D. 112, a piece which often makes it onto chamber music programs today, he was already a young master, writing fluent, lovely music that's a joy to hear. As usual, fine recorded sound. --Leslie Gerber
