    Album Description

There's more to traditional Jewish popular music than klezmer clarinet and Broadway-style fiddling on the roof. Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano revives the lively genre of Jewish cabaret and music hall songs from early twentieth-century Vienna and other vibrant centers of Jewish life.

Based on new scholarship from the University of Chicago, the CD entertains with songs of self-deprecating humor, political and cultural commentary, and social idealism (made all the more poignant by the unthinkable catastrophe soon to unfold).

You'll discover unfamiliar works by familiar names -- Weill, Milhaud, and even Schoenberg -- plus gems by once-prominent songsmiths such as Friedrich Holländer, a cabaret compatriot of Weill in the intimate cellar nightspots of Weimar Germany, and the inventive and gifted Hanns Eisler, closely associated with the cutting-edge political theater of Bertolt Brecht.

The songs offer vivid storytelling set to music drawn from varied sources including waltz, tango, and jazz. Featured singers are two Chicago cantors, exuberant soprano Deborah Bard and idiomatic baritone Stewart Figa, and mezzo-soprano Julia Bentley, a sublime and highly sought interpreter of 20th century music. Cabaret-jazz accompaniment is by the (all-American) New Budapest Orpheum Society, an ensemble of violin, double bass, piano, and percussion.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive interpretations of Brecht/Eisler.......2000-08-02

Gisela May was, along with Helene Weigel and Lotte Lenya, one of the definitive postwar interpreters of the music composed for Bertolt Brecht by Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler and Paul Dessau. The husky simplicity of her voice particularly suited Eisler--who despised sentimentality and valued clarity of expression. The power of Brecht's poetry shines through her delivery of songs like the astonishing "O Falladah, Die Du Hangest"--written from the angle of an exhausted horse lying helplessly on a busy street as a mob of desperate Depression-era Berliners carve up her living body for meat. This is not a comfortable image--but Brecht is showing us that economic injustice has uncomfortable consequences. Compare "O Falladah" with the "Song of the Invigorating Effects of Money" and the listener begins to understand that Brecht and Eisler deserve to be remembered not only as talented agitators for Marxist revolution but also as acute observers of human nature. One cannot say if the results of the famous Brecht-Eisler collaboration are timeless, but they certainly have a long shelf life.

Also noteworthy in this album are the "Song of the Moldau" and two anti-war hits--"Song of the Woman and the Soldier" and "Song of a German Mother." Note also the contrast between Eisler's lively, jazz-influenced style and Dessau's sometimes plodding treatment of songs from Brecht's later plays, which constitute the second half of the CD.

Like other albums in Edel's "Berlin Classics" series, the Gisela May CD offers digitally-remastered analog recordings from the GDR (East German) recording industry. One of the ironies of the political and economic collapse of GDR socialism is that its musical treasures--like the songs recorded on this CD--are now reaching new audiences in the West through the resources of the capitalist music industry.

4 out of 5 stars The unknown Dessau.......2000-10-25

Not really what I had expected, but very good nevertheless. I was expecting Brecht and Tucholsky settings, though only five of the 36 tracks are settings of Brecht (five of the very short but charming "Tierverse") and there is no Tucholsky material. Instead, I got acquainted with some less known Dessau Lieder - the earliest one dating from 1914 - covering his entire career up to the mid-1970s. What I had heard of the young Paul Dessau before I bought this album (e.g. the "Haggadah Shel Pessach") hadn't really impressed me, and I had the impression his compositional skill developed rather late. These early songs proved me wrong. The earliest songs don't sound like the usual sharp-edged Dessau fare, though, it's more slightly atonal late romanticism (reminded me a bit of pre-dodecaphony Berg or Webern). The characteristical Dessau style is, however, recognisable already in some Villon settings from the 1930s (though it feels a bit odd to hear them accompanied by only a pianist. One keeps expecting sudden Dessauian outbursts of snare drum, cymbals and screeching trumpets.) There is no unity of style here: there are beautiful melodic Lenz settings and atonal Neruda settings, blues pastiche and twelvetone. All (or most) of it charming. This is perhaps not the album to start with, in order to get to know the composer (for that purpose I would recommend Sonja Kehler's or Gisela May's recordings, or the Lukullus opera. Don't know if Kehler is available on CD, though.), but it is well worth having if you appreciate Dessau's work. Performances and sound quality are very good throughout.

          5 out of 5 stars A sample of Lorca's treasures.......2005-01-25

Germaine Montero's acting career started in a theater in Madrid, in the '30s, under the direction of none other than Frederico Garcia Lorca. In France, she first became known through her interpretations of Spanish songs, but her powerful voice also sang the French poets, such as Pierre Mac Orlan, Jacques Prevert, Joseph Kosma (Autumn Leaves), and Leo Ferré, as well as the classics of the French repertoire. On the stage, she interpreted Claudel, Pirandello and Bertold Brecht. She also appeared in many films. Montero's deep, remarkable voice, full of emotions, interprets with feelings and intelligence the beautiful lyrics of the great poet Frederico Garcia Lorca. I still have an old LP, which I purchased in the '50s, when I was fifteen, which I still play often although, by now, as you can imagine, it has seen better days. The same set of poems, with the beautiful guitar accompaniment, was published in the late '90s, but unfortunately is out of print and otherwise unavailable, but I am still hoping...

April 2005. Hurrah! I found one copy! But I'll still keep my old, scratched-up 33 rpm LP, for nostalgia sake .

5 out of 5 stars Spoken Spanish Poetry.......2002-05-15

The poetry of Garcia Lorca is classic and well known as being among the greatest of the century. The reading by Germaine Montero is what makes this CD truly exceptional. Her voice and timing seem like the only possible interpretation of the poetry. For anyone who loves Spanish literature or who wants to perfect their Spanish, this is a gem.
