Volume Four of Ben van Oosten's complete survey of Widor organ music contains the Symphony No. 7, and the late Symphonie gothique. The differences between the two are striking. The Symphony No. 7 is, like its predecessors, a suite of highly colorful and varied movements in various forms (including, in this case, a lovely choral, two scherzo-like intermezzos, and a gorgeous slow movement). The Symphonie gothique, on the other hand, is in the traditional four movements, and is based on Gregorian chant melodies. It's a more meditative piece, a synthesis of both the sacred and secular tradition of organ music composition. Both works are, like all of Widor's music, very easy on the ear and a joy to listen to. --David Hurwitz

Widor's Third and Fourth Organ Symphonies--the contents of Volume Two of Ben van Oostens survey of the composer's complete organ music--contain the usual assortment of characteristic movements: there's a March, a Toccata, a Minuet, a Scherzo, and a couple of Fugues, in addition to pieces in more or less free form. As is always the case with this composer, the music is so fluent and well-crafted that you won't believe that it's organ music at all. For everyone but organists, this is good news indeed. Ben van Oosten performs this music on the same Cavaille-Coll organs that inspired the composer to write it in the first place, and his interpretations have the ring of authenticity. They are also superbly recorded. --David Hurwitz
