13 pieces by famous/not so famous baroque composers provide a wider breadth of experience than most albums. This is a quality selection useful for just listening, relaxing, entertaining, meditating, or just background music. Lots to like here. Enjoy!

A baroque cd I turn to again and again........2004-01-20

As I have stated in other classical reviews, I am not an expert on classical music, but I highly recommend this CD to anyone looking for a satisfying collection of baroque works. The well known composers are here, i.e. Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, and it also may introduce listeners to baroque composers they may not have heard before, i.e. Marcello, Locatelli, Torelli. An all around great Baroque experience.

Locatelli is, of course, an exceptionally tasty sheep's milk cheese related to Romano, but he was also a very important and talented composer of violin music. Later generations looked back at him as the "Baroque Paganini," and his music abounds in technical difficulties and flashy writing for the soloist. Of course, instrumental virtuosity alone doesn't make a great composer, but in this collection of concertos and orchestra suites we see that the challenge of writing other types of music didn't faze Locatelli composer one bit. The so-called "Theatrical Introductions" are what we now call "overtures" or "suites," consisting largely of dance movements arranged in a pleasing sequence. The whole collection is expertly performed by this excellent "authentic" instrument group. --David Hurwitz

Delightful light baroque; a great find.......2007-01-31

I stumbled on these pieces by hearing one on the radio, loving it, and buying this CD. These are bright, inventive, concerto-style compositions in a style very reminiscent of Vivaldi. From the first bars of the first track, you know you're in for a treat. The first CD contains six "Introduttioni Teatrali", or theater introductions, which were apparently played before theater productions. They are in typical baroque concerto style and might better be called concerti for orchestra. The second CD contains six concerti with varying numbers of movements.

The playing is excellent, full of life and energy. The recording quality is fine, and the hall has a full, rich sound. After listening to this CD a few times, the pieces feel like old friends I've known all my life. If you like Vivaldi concerti, I'm sure you'll enjoy these.

An Unsung Master, One of Biondi's Best.......2007-06-18

The extreme popularity (largely unjustified, to my mind) which Antonio Vivaldi has enjoyed in recent times has tended to detract from the accomplishments of many other, perhaps finer, composers of the Italian late baroque. A prime example is Pietro Antonio Locatelli, a talented violinist-composer whose concertos and sonatas show real imagination and skill. Starting with the staid models of Corelli, Locatelli adds a high degree of harmonic boldness (augmented sixths and altered chords are used freely) formal sophistication, and theatricality. Although skillful contrapuntal writing is in abundance, at other times the music sounds almost pre-classical. The F minor funeral concerto and the ten-movement programmatic "Lament of Arianna" are particularly stunning and innovative works. The players of Europa Galante pour on the trademark sweet, vocal string sound, infectious rhythms and passionate expression. Thankfully, the eccentricities evident in leader Fabio Biondi's more solo-oriented work are absent here. This is without a doubt one of the finest discs Biondi and his group have given us.

Roman tradition.......2000-11-05

I find this CD to be entertaining and educational. The musicians play extremely well. My favourite piece of this package is the notes written by Joachim Steinheuer. A brief biography is provided in which I learned that, contrary to popular opinion, "there is no evidence to indicate that he took lessons with Arcangelo Corelli, who died little more than a year" after Locatelli's arrival at Rome. I also found it fascinating that Locatelli terminated his successful career as a travelling virtuoso to live in Amsterdam when he was 30. Concerning the music, Herr Steinheuer pointed me to things which I had not heard listening on my own. The D major concerto has a small "violin concerto" for a Vivace. In it I heard a distinct dialog between the solo violin and tutti, the remaining instruments. Also, in this concerto's first Allegro, the ritornelli, a tutti passage, in the upper part is homophonic. The third and fifth concerti are the only two which preserve the traditional four movement slow-fast-slow-fast structure. Yet, the G major dedicates only the first six bars to the "slow" movement as a way of introduction. In the F major concerto, Herr Steinheuer made note of the Largo which features an unrestrained melody from the harpsichord which is played according to the wishes of the performer. All of these and more from the notes provided me with a fresh and informative listening experience. If you are interested in Baroque music in the Roman tradition, or in learning about Locatelli and his music, this CD will be interesting to you.
