This is a four disc set that includes cantatas by:Alessandro Scarlatti-Caldara-Handel and Giovanni Bonancini. What a treasure trove of music!!!!The cantata, to some extent, is a development from the madrigal that appeared in Italy at the start of the seventeenth century. While the madrigal was refined and delicate, the cantata evolved because composers felt the need to introduce a dramatic narrative element into vocal chamber music and thusly the music took a lighter, wittier turn.Scarlatti is considered as one if the initiators, and also one of the reformers of this genre, whose outlines he established. In his cantatas for a single solo voice and continuo,Scarlatti treats the latter as a true partner of the voice. Caldara,who was Scarlatti's contemporary,played a large part in the development of the chamber cantata for one to five voices. Bonancini,who was essentially centered on opera, nonetheless wrote innumerable cantatas for one or more soloists. Handel's stay in Italy between the years 1706 and 1710 resulted in a time of intense creative activity, and he quite naturally gravitated towards the cantata. One of my favorites of Handels on this disc is:"Splenda l'alba in oriente", Lesne does a very learned and skillful renditon of this music. The lightness of his countertenor voice suits this genre very well. He has good diction and a nice emotional response to the varying moods of the music. Sandrine Piau (soprano) does a nice job of blending and complementing the countertenor tone quality. All in all it's a most enjoyable and varied listening experience.

Wonderfully Sensitive.......2006-01-20

I want to just say that being a countertenor, it's hard to find a partner who can counter your unique tone quality and timbre. Sandrine Piau is one of the best period sopranos I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. The most pure and beautiful tone you can imagine. She plays off Gerard Lesne as if they are one voice, yet still seperate entities in their roles as musical indivuals in this recording. The selections are nothing short of amazing, and had me hooked from the very first track. Every once of energy has been given to the sensitivity of this unworldly pure music. The Handel pieces are a rare find and a surprise to those who think they know G.F. Handel like the back of their hand. And of course Gerard Lesne is one of the most celebrated countertenors on the stage today. His sound is unique yet still beautiful in that he is keen to preserve the music in its intended context. This recording is an amazing find for those who can't get enough of the countertenor sound, and can't find many recordings of Caldara, and Bonocini.

Dellightful Baroque performances from a masterful contralto.......2004-03-29

One wonders how Virgin Classics manages to produce and market these "Pleasure 4" 4-CD sets for such low prices, but prospective buyers need not worry that they might be getting an inferior product. While an avid lover of Baroque music, before buying this set I had never been aware of contralto Gérard Lesne's name, though I soon noticed that it appears on a number of disks that I already owned--along with the names of great Baroque maestros like Philippe Herreweghe and William Christie and outstanding performers like Fabio Bondi and Véronique Gens. The discography of Lesne and his Il Seminario Musicale is nothing short of astounding in quantity and range, including many disks that have received rave reviews from Amazon reviewers and customers. Lesne is certainly as versatile a countertenor as Andreas Scholl and David Daniels, though he is apparently a little less in the limelight. The cantatas presented here are well arranged so that there is considerable contrast in style and tempo from one piece to the next, assuring that the listener never feels a sense of monotony. Moreover, we have four disks of cantatas each by a different composer, and many of these works will be new to even the average Baroque aficionado. I myself was not even aware of Caldara (c. 1670-1736), ten years younger than Scarlatti, who though "one of the most prolific composers of his generation," gets less than eight minutes on Harmonia Mundi's 15-disk Les Lumieres du Baroque (on the CD called "The Golden Age of the Oratorio"). Bononcini (1670-1747) was an equally prolific writer of vocal music, a pioneer of Italian opera, and an associate--and later rival--of Handel (1685-1759) in London. It is a delight to be able to revel in and compare some of the many delightful cantatas produced more-or-less contemporaneously by these great composers, performed with an alternation of loving gentleness and sprightly vitality by Lesne and ISM with instrumental interludes and accompaniments that can stand with the best of Baroque period performances. Lovers of late 17th and early 18th century music will find these relaxing disks ideal not only for dedicated listening, but also for playing in the background while working, doing household chores, or driving. If you already have some of Lesne's recordings, you will want this set as well, and for those who do not, this set is likely to become the beginning of a Lesne collection you will cherish for years.

Album Description

The works recorded here illustrate Buxtehude's masterful command of the huge variety of styles that characterized the sacred cantata in Germany during the seventeenth century. Each begins with an instrumental passage, and sung text is interspersed with instrumental responses, sometimes in strophic form. In the larger cantatas for all three voices, the music allows for the maximum of contrast, whereas the four solo cantatas give a more intimate expression of Buxtehude's craft. Into the latter category falls the extremely virtuosic Jubilate Domino, one of Buxtehude's best-known cantatas.

Exquisite CD.......2006-04-28

The two previous reviewers did a wonderful job which I won't even attempt topping as it would be impossible. But I must say that I agreed completely that Matthew White is superb, particularly on this disk. He shines on "Jesu meine Freud und Lust", I play it over and over... its just a masterpiece and I never really remember what it means in English and it doesn't matter, I love it.

Excellent and promising recording.......2005-08-07

Just a short review from me.
This recording is superb and the singing is very fine, indeed. The countertenor, Matthew White, is new to me and he has a very powerful and rich voice. I look forward to hearing more from him in the future. The cantatas presented here features voices, strings and basso continuo. None of the larger scaled cantatas with clarini, timpani, cornetti, tromboni and fagotti by Buxtehude are featured. However, we have a very beautiful collection of cantatas for voice(s) and small string instrumental groups. The works are sublime.

Many may already know the Jubilate Domino, BuxWV 64 from other recordings. Matthew White's interpretation is a very contender.

The Aradia Ensemble goes from strength to strength - last year they gave us a fine rendition of Rameau's Castor et Pollux and more recently they have made one of the most delightful CDs of 2005 - the 8 Symphonies of William Boyce (also on NAXOS). This Buxtehude CD will reinforce their reputation as one of the Baroque music groups that is really making entertaining, expressive, stylish, colourful and wonderful recordings these days.

Buxtehude Cantatas in Sparkling Performances.......2004-12-22

The Aradia Ensemble has become one of Canada's, and the world's, best baroque groups. They have now recorded more than a dozen CDs on the Naxos label. This is, as far as I know, their first go at the music of Dietrich Buxtehude (ca. 1637-1707) but one hopes it won't be their last. This CD contains six sacred cantatas, all for solo singers or small vocal ensembles accompanied by small instrumental group (including at times baroque violins, viola, cello, viola da gamba, violone, theorbo and positif organ) all led by Kevin Mallon. The styles vary according to the forces called for. All have instrumental introductions, the complexity of which is determined by the form of the subsequent text and its treatment for voices and instruments. Most familiar is 'Jubilate Domino' sung with laserlike intonation and sweet tone by countertenor Matthew White. This 9-minute hymn of praise begins with a long string/organ introduction that gives us materials that are then used in the florid sung line. The form is semi-strophic, with solo instrumental intermezzi between the verses. White's solo singing is also heard in 'Jesu, meine Freud und Lust,' and 'Wenn ich, Herr Jesu, habe dich' as well as in the three cantatas that call for the singing of all three soloists. He is clearly the star of this issue and one predicts a big career for him.

Katherine Hill, a clear-voiced soprano of the Emma Kirkby stripe, is heard in another solo cantata, 'Sicut Moses' ('As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up'). The three soloists (including bass Paul Grindlay) are heard together in three other cantatas, 'Was frag' ich nach der Welt, 'In te, Domine, speravi,' and the dramatic 9-minute 'Wie schmeckt es so lieblich und wohl' ('How lovely and good the saviour') with its introduction and instrumental ritornelli, passages for combined voices as well as those for each of the soloists. This is a virtuoso work, calling for exciting (and expertly done) fioriture from the singers and solo playing from the instrumentalists.

The CD also contains the familiar Passacaglia in D minor, BuxWV 161 (originally for organ) arranged by Mallon for strings. I prefer it on the organ, but it is nonetheless an effective transcription. (It might be added that pitch on this CD seems to be pretty close to modern concert A=440, not radically lowered as it so often is in baroque recordings.) Sound is clean and lifelike.

Domenico Scarlatti's (1685-1757) reputation today rests mainly on his enormous output of keyboard music. Most of his 15 known operas are lost, as are the majority of his oratorios and cantatas. Most of Domenico's sacred compositions date from 1713-1719, whilst he was 'Maestro di Cappella at the Basilica Guilia in Rome. In his sacred music he showed elements of harmonic richness and melodic individuality, but the main features of his settings of emotive sacred texts are tuneful melodies mixed with occasional elements of the opera. His 'Salve Regina' displays such elegance of line and rich harmony combined with an operatic style.

Alessandro Scalatti (1660-1725), the father of Domenico. wrote more than 600 cantatas, and established himself as by far the most prolific cantata composer of his era. Most of his cantatas are for solo voice, usually with only continuo for accompaniment, but in his last 60 cantatas he added strings, and sometimes recorders and trumpets. There are three that appear on this disc dating around 1744. They are:'Cantata Su le sponde del Tebro '(On the Banks of the Tiber)- 'Cantata Infirmata vulnerata' (Weak and wounded for want of Pure Love)-and 'Cantata O di Betlemme altera' (O noble and unfortunate poverty of Bethlehem).

Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783) was extremely popular both in Germany (where he studied with Alessandro Scarlatti) and Italy. His principal employment in his early years was as a tenor with the Hamburg Opera, which may account for the lyrical style in which he wrote. Amongst a huge compositional output there are at least 13 settings of the 'Salve Regina' attrlibuted to Hasse. The one on this disc is considered to be the most popular; it is dated 1744. His style is distinctly operatic, mixing an attractive simplicity of melody with florid instrumental and vocal lines eminently suited to the voice.

James Bowman, countertenor, is a very capable interpreter of most of the music he sings. His diction can sound s bit unclear at times due to the overpowering and somewhat 'foggy' sound of his voice. He's not MY favorite countertenor, but his delivery cannot be questioned; it is always quite correct and he is considered to be one of the great singers from the UK.
Deborah York, soprano, sings very well indeed; nice tone quality, excellent diction; all-around good performance. And the trumpet player soaring around on the high notes in the first Scarlatti cantata on the disc was phenominal.
My favorite is the Hasse 'Salve Regina', perhaps because it is more dramatic and exciting to hear; but in truth the entire disc is quality throughout.

What an unusually rich and extraordinarily versatile voice! Supported by the English Chamber Orchestra really accentuates the exportation to a time past when music truly would leave the soul bare and unprotected. Djerejian masterfully communicates the essence of love lost and the anguish the heart feels tied to the yearning soul and the inexplicable joy the heart leaps for to raise the soul to the heights of angels. Brava!! I highly recommend this recording for all.
