Nobody makes somber sound more exquisite than Alison Krauss. She's come an awfully long way from her days as a teenage fiddle prodigy, as her glamour gown on this CD's cover suggests and the bittersweet maturity of the music confirms. Krauss exchanges her bluegrass fiddle for the chamber strains of viola on much of the material, including four songs by Robert Lee Castleman (whose "The Lucky One," "Let Me Touch You for Awhile," and "Forget About It" were previously popularized by Krauss). Castleman's compositions showcase the emotional intimacy and interpretive subtlety of her breathy trill. The yearning harmonies on "Wouldn't Be So Bad" (written by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings) and "Borderline" (written by Sidney and Suzanne Cox) reinforce the album's restless spirit of quiet desperation. Change-of-pace contributions by Krauss's bandmates are more deeply rooted in the bluegrass/folk tradition, with Dan Tyminski renewing Del McCoury's "Rain Please Go Away" and Woody Guthrie's populist anthem "Pastures of Plenty"; Dobro master Jerry Douglas leads the charge on his instrumental "Unionhouse Branch." Few bands in bluegrass can match the virtuosity of Union Station's interplay, but the artistry of Alison Krauss transcends genre. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this record!.......2007-07-12

I love this record, and I love the fact that Alison and the guys know where there talent lies. They never pretend to be something they're not. Any record of theirs is going to be your favorite. There is not a song on this record that I don't like. If you like this one, try their new one "A Hundred Miles or More". Same goes for that one. Very few singers in my experience are as good as Alison, so if you want to listen to music at it's purist, this is the record for you.

5 out of 5 stars The sheer delight of Alison Krauss and band.......2007-07-01

I keep referring to "that goddess" when I hear her come on the radio or one of her tracks comes on my computer. My colleagues are used to me gushing about her. I say, I first fell in love with this diva as I discovered her in "O Brother, where art thou" and then again in "Cold Mountain". I was terribly hooked and several albums later I am a devoted fan of her and her band. They cannot do wrong, each album is full of fun, superb artistry on several instruments, incredibly good harmonies. What can I tell you? She is at the top of her genre and her contributions to those soundtracks shows a depth she can call on that certify her as a true gem. What a great talent and another great album.

5 out of 5 stars Smart and Beautiful and Talented Allison.......2007-05-13

I love practically everything they do. Allison and Union Station. I love Bluegrass. Always have and always will. I have all of their CDs except for the newest one released this year. Soon I'll have it. I have a brand new favorite male singer. (Right up there with Don Gibson.) That would be Dan Tyminski. I just love the way he "pushes" those words out. After I found out that wasn't George singing in O Brother, I searched and searched for the song not even realizing it was on a CD I already had. Don't know how I missed it unless I was on the phone or something. I now play it over and over. There are lots and lots in these CDs that I absolutely can't get enough of. I play them all over and over.

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic mix for Alison Krauss.......2007-05-12

She has some heart wrenchers and some upbeat jigs. A great CD to listen to any time--several different moods to choose from!

5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass for mature rockers.......2007-05-07

AKUS has been the premier bluegrass act...forever. However they were off my radar since they played BLUEGRASS. I am a rocker. Then I clicked on Urge to catch and listen and I was hooked. This is Bluegrass? Alison's ethereal voice and her bands phenomenal playing have made me a convert. (ps. the singer from the Coen brothers' movie "O brother where art thou" is in this band)

Biological determinists who find a poster boy in this 30-year-old singer/songwriter will miss just what's exceptional about the talent emerging on his second album. Certainly if your father were Richard Thompson, you'd have him play guitar on your record too. The son, however, has made an album as crafty in pop, lush in roots, and unguarded in emotion as any of his peers--and his sound, while clearly indebted to the acoustic foundations of British folk-rock, is his own fusion of L.A. singer/songwriter sweetness and Wallflowers-esque AOR rock. He's also finding his own way into songwriting, turning quotidian phrases into deadpan wit--"Being happy is easy if you're dumb," he sings on "That's Enough Out of You"--or letting everyday speech reveal a troubled honesty. "I can change my mind but not my blood," he admits on the title track, as strings and scuffling snare build tension. His arrangements leave ample space for his voice, a bell-bright instrument with a deceptive range, to open up his melodies. By layering harmonies from longtime pals Rufus and Martha Wainwright, as well as his mother, Linda Thompson, Teddy gives those melodies the shine, even ambition, of pop outreach--even if, as he sings on the opening track, he wants to "shine so bright it hurts." --Roy Kasten

3 out of 5 stars Good singer .......2007-07-10

Mr Thompson latest release has some awesome songs that stand out with his voice sound awesome & awesome arrangements & awesome musicianship & they are songs 2&4 & 6-8. The rest of the songs feel out of place that just not the right material for his voice & there just fair to so so. So id pass this CD up & wait til the next cd he puts out is different with more songs that would suite his voice that would be awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Teddy Thompson - Separate Ways.......2007-06-15

Teddy Thompson is a singer songwriter with an entrancing voice who sets his unique yet everyday lyrics to haunting melodies that go straight to your heart. These are songs you want to hear over and over again. I have not heard a voice this good since Elvis. This album is fabulous.

4 out of 5 stars Breathtaking young talent.......2007-02-06

Teddy Thompson's voice is stunning, not just it's natural beauty but the subtle delivery I associate with much more seasoned performers. It makes me think of George Jones and Johnny Cash and the way they could turn a song inside out. The arrangements on Separate Ways are similarly nuanced. I'm of his dad's generation, but if I were in my 20s, I'm sure I'd be playing this album non-stop. As it is, I've got it mixed into my playlists.

4 out of 5 stars Diamonds.......2007-02-05

Six years after his self-titled debut, Teddy Thompson, son of rock royalty Richard & Linda Thompson, follows with his sophomore set. Thompson's vocals make him an expressive singer with excellent power to touch our emotions. My favorite track is "Altered State" with its pretty melody, driving beat, sizzling lead guitar and darker lyrics, "I like to live in an altered state, it makes me love all the things I hate." "Think Again" is an exceptional track combining a unique melody and Teddy's resonate vocals mining the emotion from his lyric, "Don't give in, this isn't what you want; Feelings change, morning brings rain." "I Should Get Up" has a chugging beat that gets your toe tapping with Teddy's vocals caressing each note, making one think about those times when events sap your feelings and exhaust the spirit, "I feel so warm in my room; I'm safe & sound inside my tomb." Other tracks are also strong like the lovely but dark "Everybody Move It" with Rufus & Martha Wainwright on background vocals, and his amazing vocals on the title track. Thompson has one of the best voices in pop and writes with emotional depth. There are enough diamonds here that making a path to "Separate Ways" satisfies soundly. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great album.......2006-12-08

If you like singer-songwriters, he is one of the best recording today. Try him if you like Rufus Wainwright, David Gray, or Damien Rice.

A Thousand Different Ways, the follow-up to Clay Aiken's chart-burning debut Measure of a Man, trots out the kind of material a fleet-voiced former American Idol contestant can't help having a field day with: Aiken's version of Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" is bathed in a smoothness that renders it arguably better than the original; his step into Celine Dion's shoes for "Because You Loved Me" sees nary a stumble (no easy feat, considering it's a vocal obstacle course of a song); and his cover of Paul Young's '80s classic "Everytime You Go Away" comes across as a clean-sounding, much-needed update. More proof that Aiken ain't fakin' when it comes to being a stylish interpreter comes courtesy of his convincing carry-off of Dolly Parton's sweet "Here You Come Again," but where he'll earn the most merit points for this disc is with its four originals--"A Thousand Days" especially. Aiken has the kind of voice that makes listeners want to scoot close to the speaker. He may be a softy, but when it comes to trapping raw emotion in song, he's become a mop-topped man of steel. --Tammy La Gorce

The project, Aiken's first outing since 2004, combines 10 cover versions of well-known songs from the '70s, '80s and '90s with four brand-new songs. The album is a follow-up to Aiken's debut set, "Measure of a Man," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart and is certified triple-platinum, as well as the platinum-selling "Merry Christmas with Love," the best-selling holiday album of the 2004 season.

5 out of 5 stars If you think the CD is fantastic...........2007-07-22

Then you need, NEED to see this man live!! He sings several songs from his A Thousand Different Ways CD and he sounds absolutely fabulous singing them live. As Sara Collins mentions below he breathes new life into these selection, but in person, on stage, he launches them into a different dimension entirely. I Want To Know What Love Is and Open Arms are just the tip of the iceberg of these covers sounding like you are hearing them for the first time. If you haven't seen Clay Aiken live and in person, I strongly encourage you to check if he's coming to your home town and buy a ticket fast!!!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2007-07-07

Amazing vocals! This CD is great! He breathes new life into the songs that have been played over and over again on the radio. His new songs are great too!

5 out of 5 stars Clay does Covers and is AWESOME again!.......2007-07-06

For whatever reason, there are those in the industry that think doing an album of mostly "covers" isn't legit or even cool, but Clay has proven all naysayers wrong. This album is very smooth, powerful in its delivery, and every cover is better than the original, in my humble opinion. And A Thousands Days is beautiful original piece. I didn't understand the way radio stations work so was very confused why none of these tunes were ever played on our local (Denver) radio station, especially on the station that plays all love songs late at night.... kinda sad in my opinion that songs aren't played on the radio like they did in the old days....by what the listeners want and request! Clay's CD deserved lots of air time but was ignored by those who dictate what we hear on the radio. Clay has a beautiful voice and a masterful delivery of his music and he will be around for a very long time. He's still my favorite American Idol contestant and I believe I speak for many folks! Buy this CD and you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars I love Clay.......2007-07-03

I absolutely LOVE Clay Aiken and have nothing bad to say about him or this album. I was glad that he released a new album after much anticipation and it was well worth the wait.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-06-16

I really enjoyed Clay's first album...every single song. This one is good, but I would have preferred more original songs instead of mostly retreads. I think a 2nd album for an artist should not be re-makes, so although I liked it, I was a bit disappointed.

Novelist Robert Ludlum's amnesia-plagued, tough-as-nails spy/assassin Jason Bourne again proves that success begats sequels, be they literary or cinematic. As he did for the saga's initial big screen installment, composer John Powell concocts an electro-orchestral fusion score that seasons its tense, bristling rhythms with dollops of melodicism, synth-atmospherics and staccato string figures. Those welcome touches hearken back to composer's similar work on the '03 action-thriller The Italian Job, with Powell initially evoking the film's exotic locales by employing a savory synth pop-meets-Eastern European palate. The tension-building rhythms and percussion flourishes familiar from Powell's other action-centric scores are the score's musical pulse -- even if they eventually upset the finely honed balancing act by boiling over into the familiar explosive cliches of all too many thriller scores. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars If you liked the original soundtrack, you will love this one!.......2007-05-31

I wrote a very positive review of the soundtrack for "The Bourne Identity"...I was right to do so. This soundtrack; however, is even better!

What can I say...the wonderful musial selections to this great movie are all here...I suggest buying a copy now...if you are a Bourne fan.

One other note of interest...this sound track included Moby's song, "Extreme Ways" this time...an obvious oversight corrected from the last soundtrack

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Listen.......2006-02-15

I enjoyed this soundtrack immensely. Having heard the background themes to the Bourne movies from the movie, I knew right away that I would like the soundtrack.
The soundtrack is mainly a combination of electronic and orchestral themes except for the last song by Moby, "Extreme Ways". Instead of basing the soundtrack on one or two main riffs, the pieces rely on multiple riffs. While in some respect I wished that John Powell could have expanded some of the pieces (like Gao), I was satisfied that there was enough genuinely unique material throughout.
Regarding the song-content on this album, there is mainly orchestral pieces as mentioned earlier. I did some research on-line and found that the song in the chase-scene of the first Bourne series, The Bourne Identity, is by Paul Oakenfold - 'Ready Steady Go'. Also, the club music in the second Bourne series, The Bourne Supremecy, is by Mocean Worker - 'IntoThinAir'. Two great artists that I hardly knew about before the Bourne series.

5 out of 5 stars Best soundtrack I've listened to........2006-01-16

I listen to this album on my five-hour drives between home and college. You'd think I'd get tired of the songs, but I don't. The time goes very fast when listening to this album. However, several of the songs make me want to imitate the car chase sequence in the film. So, although this album is truly wonderful, drive carefully while listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2005-10-28

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but could have been better..........2007-06-20

This was a budget release from 1972. Elvis' management had come up with a way to release several albums a year while minimizing Elvis' studio time: take some of his old songs that had not been released on an album and package them with a couple of new songs that had been released as a single. While it may have been a way to make a fast buck, Elvis' new material deserved better and should have been packaged with other new songs and treated as a major release, rather than a budget release.

That being said, this is actually not a bad album. The new single included here was Separate Ways / Always On My Mind. Separate Ways was a top 20 hit in the US while the flip side, Always On My Mind was the hit overseas. Also included were some nice up-tempo songs from the 1960's, Sentimental Me, What Now, What Next, Where To?, and I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell. To show you how far back they would reach for a song, it includes Old Shep which was a minor hit in 1956 and another 1950's song Is It So Strange. By the time this album was released, those songs were showing their age and were out of place on an early 70's release. It is no wonder that the album only managed to climb to 46 on the US album chart, though it would eventually sell more than a million copies and be certified PLATINUM.

While I understand the desire to make use of old Elvis songs on low-budget releases, they should never have mixed the old with the new. Elvis had enough new material at the time to put out a high-quality new album that probably would have done much better on the chart. As it was, they pretty much wasted two really good new songs by putting them on an album with a bunch of dated material.

Modern folk and blues rarely sounds as inventive and colorful as the Wood Brothers' spare, soothing studio debut. Currents of jazz, pop, and country also ripple through these 12 lovely arrangements built around Chris Wood's upright bass (previously heard in Medeski, Martin & Wood) and Oliver Wood's gentle acoustic and electric guitars. It's not simply that the brothers' sweet, high voices have the genetic gift of close harmony: they're in absolute synch creatively, too. So when one's singing lingers over a lazy phrase in a number like the languid ode to living "Chocolate on My Tongue," the other hangs back on his instrument until just the right, complementary moment. Drummer Kenny Wollesen, who plays on a handful of tracks, is on the same wavelength--never rushing or pushing the Woods' behind-the-beat sensibility. And the rich dark tones of the bass and, in particular, slide guitars perfectly illuminate their unhurried stories about spiritual discovery and the trials of life. All of which makes Ways Not to Lose a delightful, relaxed listening experience. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Surprise hit!.......2007-05-03

If someone had told me a year ago that I would now be listening and singing along DAILY (mostly in the car, but sometimes in the shower--better acoustics for singing "Spirit" and "The Truth is the Light" all bluesy) to a CD from the "folk" bin, I would have called that person crazy. Now I've been to see The Wood Brothers twice and am eagerly awaiting their next CD. I am a fairly new Medeski Martin and Wood fan (Chris Wood being the bassist in both bands) and found Ways Not to Lose while perusing their website. TOTALLY different music and just as enjoyable! I like that it's just the two brothers and their two instruments (okay, and a little bit o' drums). It makes me feel all nostalgic...for what exactly, I do not know. The songs are infectious and I seem to have a different favorite every few days. I agree with what some of the other posters have said...every single one of the songs is a keeper, not one bad or even so-so one. I also recommend their Live at Tonic CD. AND I recommend whatever their next CD is because I've already heard some of their new songs at their shows and am all a-quiver with anticipation.

4 out of 5 stars Good music OK recording.......2007-03-08

I got this CD after seeing and loving the duo on the Public Radio show Mountain Stage.

On the show they played as a duo and I was happy that on the record that there were no additional musicians or studio stuff.

All of the songs are great, to me they have sort of a bluesy style that has hints of Van Morrison. My favorite is Luckiest Man Alive.

Anyway my only complaint is that the quality of the recording is not that good. I have a tape of the radio show with them on it and it is actually clearer than the album. I hope at some later time they will do a live album with a really crisp sound quality that has some of these songs on it.

In the meantime enjoy this album although the bass is MUCH crisper in real life and PLEASE go see these guys live!! Totally worth seeing!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sonic and musical masterpiece.......2007-02-08

Bought this on recommendation from a hifi forum to which I belong. It is wonderful music and the sound quality is fantastic. Exceptional recording. Great songs with deceptively simple arrangements.

4 out of 5 stars better with time.......2007-01-16

I wasn't affected one way or another on my 1st few 'spins' of this CD.
However, I kept putting it on and it has really grown on me - a sign of a strong CD...after a while it gets infectious.
Just don't know if I'd call it folk..more like modern blues. The instrumentation is sparse or make that uncluttered, but effective.

5 out of 5 stars Wow are these guys amazing!.......2007-01-12

The Wood Brothers (Oliver Wood guitars, vocals, Chris Wood standing bass, vocals, and Kenny Wollesen, drums and percussion) are wonderful. They are distinctive and unusual, kind of folk, kind of blues, kind of jazz...kind of not like anything else out there. With the exception of one traditional song Angel Band, Chris and Oliver wrote all the songs and there ain't a lemon among `em. They somehow manage to be mellow and edgy at the same time, though how that is managed I have no idea. I do know I have been spinning this cd nonstop (well, truth be told, I have been iTuning it nonstop on the old `puter, but you know what I mean) since I bought it a few days ago, and have already ordered another of their cds. The bluesy smooth Chocolate On My Tongue is my favorite (at least right now) but every song is wonderful. Check `em out!

Serene singers and lush electronic textures and strings are often a prescription for smothering romanticism and overwrought pop-treacle. Rhys Fulber, the force behind Conjure One, succumbed to that with his other band, Delerium, on their last album, Chimera ." But Fulber's post-Delerium project, Conjure One, though using the same formula, has a darker, sometimes more foreboding edge. On their long awaited second CD, superstar singer Sinead O'Connor is gone in favor of a bevy of lesser known voices, but little else has changed. That's not bad although "Endless Dream" echoes "Center of the Sun" from the previous album perhaps a bit too closely with yearning lyrics rising to cathedral heights in a soul-haunted chorus. The vocal credit on the tune is Jane, but unless someone has perfected human cloning, it's actually the singer-songwriter Poe, a hold-over from the last CD. She has the kind of warm crystal clear alto that makes even the awkward lyrics of the title track sound like heavenly entreaties. Joanna Stevens eschews words all together when she powers through a Middle-Eastern derived wordless hymn on the ecstatic grooves of "Dying Light." Conjure One almost becomes a different project, --one that recalls the glistening electro-pop of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark-- when Rhys Fulber sings on "Beyond Being" and a cover of The Buzzcock's "I Believe". But singers Tiff Lacey and Chemda bring it back to the Conjure One sound. From the orchestral-electronica of "Pilgrimage" to the poignant intimacy of "One Word," Extraordinary Ways is an album that seduces easily. -- John Diliberto

Album Description

With Conjure One being Rhys Fulber's (Frontline Assembly & Delerium) solo debut, he expands upon the promise of Karma with a rapturous blend of lush textures, hauntingly beautiful melodies and softly curved electrobeats. Nettwerk. 2005.

3 out of 5 stars poe is clearly tonic.......2007-07-07

the album was not bad, I mean it was ok. I am not shell shocked or out of my mind with telling friends about it. Considering Poe's solo career went right down the tubes like Rosanne singing the National Anthem, its refreshing hearing her on this ablum.

Some good tracks, but nothing to speak of. Just another ambient album, that maybe could have stayed in production a bit longer before being jugulared to the masses

thanks

4 out of 5 stars Poe is the genius, conjure one is filler........2007-03-18

The songs in which Poe participates are SO much better than the rest of the album that they are not even comparable. I feel bad for her that she has to team up with mediocre people just to get produced, but I am grateful that she gets the opportunity to put out some material and I am grateful to conjure one of that. Don't get me wrong, conjure one is not bad, but they just don't do anything of note by themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Conjure One's Re-invention by Rhys Fulber.......2006-10-15

This is Conjure One's sophomore album which again features the direction of Rhys Fulber (of Delerium & FLA). The 1st album featured Euro, Tribal and ambient beats, this album does not. Like Delerium, this side project under Rhys Fulber has gone more pop but with a slightly darker edge in many of the songs. It still retains 'untamed new age' rhythms. I have been a fan of Fulber and Leeb from the very beginning and enjoy listening to Delerium, other side projects and FLA. So when I found out Rhys was going his own way on his own project I was tempted in hearing it and liked what I heard. So with this second album it comes to no surprise that even though the texture and sound of the music has changed to a more mainstream feel, the music is still intoxicating and makes you go on a voyage down a myriad of emotions and mindscapes.

Now the songs are beautiful. Some are better in fluency than others but for me the better part of the album were the last 4 songs. The album opens up with two very 'pop' feeling songs that are radio-ready to play 'Endless Dream' & 'Face The Music'. The song 'One Word' is a uplifting song about faith in decisions. But the best songs are at the end of the album. I do miss the voice of 'Sinead O'Conner' though but the vocals are beautifully done here.

'Forever Lost' and 'Into The Escape' round out the album with haunting serenades and catchy tunes that stay in your head. Conjure One reinvented itself, not forgetting its past but holding onto it and changing to include more mainstream features. Not a bad effort and well done Fulber for another great album.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-16

This album was boring and bland. I bought it because I very much liked Conjure One's first album (I thought it sounded similar to Balligomingo's Beneath the Surface- somewhat pop, but very melodic and soothing too), but this album wasn't nearly as good. 'Endless Dream' is the only good song, and maybe 'Extraordinary Way'. The rest aren't bad, but aren't interesting, either. I reserve this album for background music.

5 out of 5 stars POE'S RETURN TO CONJURE ONE IS EXTRAORDINARY.......2006-06-16

I'm not happy with the negative reports that people have been provided here. My inital exposure to the clever lyrical content of POE was initally through a Conjure One CD and I've since bought her other solo material in addition to these collaborative efforts. POE definately has a fan in Milwaukee. The songs and content of this CD are engaging and a light pop orientation in the vein of DJ Armin Van Burne, Balligomingo, and Enigma, and Delerium. I've been getting into another act in this genre called Collide and that band happens to be my favorite in the Genre. This album however, has been played daily on my ipod for the last two weeks. I can't get the song "Extra Ordinary Ways" out of my head. If you like these other bands then this line up is great. I'd love a chance to see how they collaborate and some behind the scenes stuff on how Rhyes (spelling) worked with these other artists and how his collaborative procesess work. I also secretly wonder if he's hip to other projects out there outside this genre like Dream Theater? Well, if you like Pretty or Vocal Trance music this is for you. It has a more poppy flavor than the Energizer Bunny Trance sounds and is definately more loungy. Enjoy it.

Neil Young's most dependable route has always been to head for the back roads. Country-flavored releases Harvest (1972), Comes a Time ('78), Harvest Moon ('92), and Silver & Gold ('00) are among the most commercially popular titles in a fitful career, which makes Old Ways something of a anomaly. Released in 1985 as the mid-title in a misbegotten five-LP stint with Geffen, it failed to exhibit the kind of roughhewn muscle of its more robust country cousins. With Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson making vocal contributions and a mix of longtime Young sidemen and Nashville cats laying down a bed of fiddles, steel guitar, and banjo, it would seem to be cruising right up Music City's main drag of the mid-'80s. But Young being Young, he goes around the bend with "Misfits," which summons an indelible image of space-station astronauts watching reruns of Muhammad Ali fights. It happens to be the most memorable number on Old Ways, which perhaps explains why those new fans never showed up and the old ones found other things to do for awhile. --Steven Stolder

2 out of 5 stars Textbook example of not giving the fans what they want, and the fans responding.......2007-03-26

Shortly after David Geffen sued Young for the dreck he produced in his "lost decade" with the label, Young compiled a single CD overview of those years for Geffen called "Lucky Thirteen." The cosmic hippie joke here, of course, is that the thirteenth track is "This Note's For You," which was on Young's first album after rejoining Reprise. From the "Old Ways" album we got two tracks, "Once An Angel" and "Where Is The Highway Tonight," not bad, but certainly not among his best. After "This Note" came "Freedom," containing his ode to Bush 41, "Rocking In The Free World," then "Ragged Glory," probably the toughest Neil Young & Crazy Horse album of his career. So...in 1985, six years after his last great album ("Rust Never Sleeps") and five years before his next great one ("Ragged Glory"), how did fans react to "Old Ways?" They didn't. On the album cover we have a nice color shot of Huckleberry Neil, peacefully strolling along a trail on his Redwood City ranch that his fans bought for him. Over the years, they shelled out their hard earned dollars for the good, the bad, and the ugly...everything he plastered his name on. But the biggest "Old Ways" joke of all came when Young taped an episode of Austin City Limits during the tour. His final number was a 15-minute, bone-crunching rendition of "Down By The River," with the Old Ways band out-Crazy Horsing Crazy Horse. Young moaned over and over "Be on my SIIIIIIIIIIIDE..." as he paused only to spray vibrato-laden notes from his beloved "Old Black." Five years later the Godfather of Grunge stepped back up to the plate with "Ragged Glory" and the resultant live album "Weld," but 1985's "Old Ways" was simply something the fans didn't want, coming at a time when Neil Young's decade-long Geffen joke had worn annoyingly thin.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent country album.......2006-12-26

Neil Young has a great talent like Bob Dylan when it comes to doing country music. In the 1980's I didn't follow his career, except that I heard Trans when a friend played it for me. I find the whole story of his Geffen years to be quite funny. Thank God Neil did what he felt like doing rather than knuckle under to the likes of David Geffen. Old Ways is a very twangy country album with the exception of the excellent Misfits which cannot be categorized. I like the musicians he has on this album. Young and Waylon Jennings were a perfect singing combination - it is a shame that these two didn't make a duet album together-their harmonies are that good. Much of his singing on this album is suggestive of Buck Owens as well. This is a great cd to listen to in the car while driving - if you are into country it's a must have. I don't always like Neil Young - when he was at the Dylan tribute concert in Madison Square Garden slamming away on a Les Paul while prancing around on stage he was pretty painful. But at his quiet country best he cannot be beat. For example, listen to My Boy on this CD and you'll see what I mean. This is a 5 star country CD.

5 out of 5 stars Neil Young: Old Ways.......2006-11-04

This is just a straight-up country album--at least as good as Dylan's Nashville Skyline. In fact, come to think of it, that was probably Young's inspiration for Old Ways. Both albums position a fun, ragtime instrumental as the second track ("Nashville Skyline Rag" on Nashville Skyline, "Get Back To The Country" on Old Ways) and both feature brief guest appearances by big name country musicians (Johnny Cash on NS, Willie Nelson on OW). The songs on Old Ways are ridiculously well written, and overall this is a great, overlooked Neil Young album.

5 out of 5 stars Different, but one of his best.......2006-09-13

Don't listen to the negative comments on this album. If your a big Neil Young fan you probably already have/had this. Recorded during a heavy country phase. I saw Neil with Waylon Jennings when this album first came out. This album is no joke. It's country, but it's Neil Young country. A little weird, a little outlaw, a little my way or the highway. In other words all the things you like about Neil Young. Accusing Neil Young of being too country would be like saying Bob Dylan is too folky. It goes with the territory.

5 out of 5 stars one of his top 5 records.......2006-07-21

dont listen to anyone who gives this record less than 4 stars. just because none of these songs are on his greatest hits album doesnt mean this is a bad record. the songs are catchy, and 20 years later, they still hold up. the only thing thats missing is the record crackle that i got used to for so many years.
