Customer Reviews:
CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.
Do not Buy.......2007-02-21
I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Customer Reviews:
So I'm just learning violin..........2006-09-21
and I can not play like Joshua Bell. For this, he better consider himself damn lucky as the world could not handle two of us Joshua Bells.
This was my first exposure to this phenom. Sorry, I had never heard of him until I got my first issue of STRINGS magazine and he was on the cover. My wife liked the cover and wanted to know if I got better would I not only sound like him but would I also look like him? I guess we'll never know how that will actually turn out. Safe to say, I'll end up not looking like him as I can never be quite as good as him. Again, damn lucky for Josh as I don't think the world could handle two of us.
This disc is an absolute gem not only for the Joshua Bell and violin fan, but the arrangements and the sound quality is superb. What this disc made me realize is that there are truly only a few out there that have complete and total control of their craft. It also made me decide that I would like to perhaps pick up a few more Joshua Bell recordings. For my wife, I guess I'll just duplicate them and give the copies to her in a blank cd case. I can tell her it's me playing. That ought to heat things up!
Joshua Bell..........2005-12-05
This CD is a wonderful CD to see how Joshua Bell interprets some of the standard repertory of violinists of this century. The only thing I was dissapointed in slightly was that it included music from other CD's already produced by Bell, but otherwise, a wonderful gift for someone who has never heard Bell before.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent recording by a contemporary violinists.......2004-06-25
Although I personally dislike discussions on whether one recording is definitive or not, this question is an apt one in this case. Would this CD be on my desert-island-pack (where I can only have 5... hmm... alright ten CD's)? Well, it would be in the running for these concertos in terms of a contemporary rendition, but I would still have to opt for the usual suspects (Oistrakh, Milstein, Szigeti, etc...).
This brings us to another aspect of Mr. Shaham's playing: Although it is beautiful and technically impeccable fiddling, his playing does not have the distinctive mark that violinists of the past did. It is unfair to single out Mr. Shaham with this accusation, as it can be leveled at almost any violinist alive, but since Gil Shaham is considered the scion of violinists these days, I suppose more is expected of him. What it boils down to is that I will always go to his recordings if I want technically perfect, if occasionally soulfully devoid playing, such that I can form my own opinions of the piece without being burdened by too personal an intepretation.
Nonetheless, this CD rates 5 stars for its clarity, beauty, and the inclusion of the oft-maligned Solo Sonata.
Strongly Recommended, But Is It Definitive?.......2002-03-07
Without question, Gil Shaham is one of our finest young violinists. Here he plays with his usual lyrical sweetness and splendid technical skill. Yet I concur with a previous reviewer that the finest recent recording of Prokofiev's 1st violin concerto is Maxim Vengerov's, since he demonstrates far more passion than Shaham (Vengerov's performance of the 2nd violin concerto is almost as fine.). Unfortunately, both performances are on two separate Teldec recordings with Rostropovich conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, so Shaham's interpretations might be preferable to those interested in getting both concerti on one CD. Speaking of conducting, Previn shows he is an admirable accompanist to Shaham, and is as astute interpreter of Prokofiev's music as Rostropovich. The sound quality is absolutely superb; it's slightly better than the Vengerov/Rostropovich Teldec CDs.
Recommended, but not a first choice.......2001-01-07
Shaham brings his customary good-natured, sweet-voiced interpretations to the two violin concertos of Prokofiev. He is technically impeccable (though there are a few, like Dmitri Sitkovetsky, who are able to bring even greater clarity to the passagework), and musically astute. Those for whom Shaham is a first choice in violinists, and are seeking a recording of these concertos, can purchase this CD without second thoughts. However, for others, this CD should not be a first choice in this repertoire, unless one has their heart set on buying this specific repertoire on a single disc.
The first concerto, alternatively lyrical and demonic, is probably best served on modern recordings by Maxim Vengerov, who also has the advantage of superb accompaniment at the hands of Rostropovich; Vengerov brings fire and passion to the concerto, at the expense of some clarity. Cho-Liang Lin and D. Sitkovetsky, both (like Shaham) former Dorothy Delay pupils, interpret this concerto in a way quite similar to Shaham's, and are also reasonable alternatives (Sitkovetsky's in particular for its sterling clarity and super-budget price). However, there are three very fine historical recordings that trump the modern ones.
One is Nathan Milstein's studio recording (there's also a broadcast recording, interpretively quite similar, but the performance is marred by some noticeable moments of the soloist being lagged by the orchestra); Milstein brings his usual grace and sense of classical proportion to the work, in a recording which is probably a first choice. Another is David Oistrakh's recording; Oistrakh was a champion of this concerto, and he plays what is probably the most identifiably "Russian" interpretation. The final recording is Joseph Szigeti's, interpretively quite distinct from anything else on record and well worth listening to.
In the second concerto, the competition is stiffer -- most of the major violinists of the 20th century recorded this work. Milstein must be mentioned again. Heifetz, too, brings his considerable virtuosity to this concerto (he did not, unfortunately, record the first). Shaham's lyrical playing serves him particularly well in the second movement of this concerto, though.
The inclusion of the solo sonata is a nice bonus, but probably shouldn't influence your purchasing decision much.
beautiful.......2000-04-26
Prokofiev's violin concertos are among the greatest and most immediately likeable pieces of music written this century. This is by far the best recording I have heard of them. The sound is beautiful and Gil Shaham achieves a remarkable degree of emotional clarity. He obviously truly understands and loves these pieces. Tears are brought to my eyes every time I hear this CD.
I love this cd!.......1999-12-19
The lyricism and power of these pieces are very well comunicated by Shaham. The sound is very focussed and musical. This is one of my all time favorite recordings and I recommend it to anyone!

Amazon.com essential recording
César Franck's ever-popular Violin Sonata exists in many different versions, including one for cello and this one for flute. None of these arrangements seems to stem from the composer himself, but that doesn't matter, since the music holds up very well regardless of the instrumental vehicle. What makes this disc so spectacular--Galway's bright, immaculate performances aside--is the presence of Martha Argerich, arguably the world's greatest living pianist and something of a specialist in this very sonata as well as in the music of Prokofiev. With the Reinecke sonata thrown in as a bonus, the result is a great chamber-music recording all-around and not just another flute disc. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
A MUST for serious flutists.......2006-01-30
James Galway truly sets the standard for flute playing. Being a flutist myself, I am always looking for any true flute literature recordings by Galway. His "pop" stuff is o.k., but we need more recordings of standard literature. If you do not have this in your audio library or if you've never heard these pieces before, you MUST get this one! Also, if you are an accompanist needing to hear these pieces, this is an excellent recording as Argerich and Moll are fabulous!
excellent CD.......2000-02-23
The sonatas are very good and they explore different possibilities that the flute has.Galway's tone specially it's color is incredible.I have never heard any flutist that has that tone it's just so beautiful I could even say it's perfect. The piano part of this sonatas is not just accompaniment it has the same importance as the flute part.Argerich is a master of the piano and in combination with Galway the results are very good. Moll does a fine job in the piano but in my opinion he is not at Argerich's level. If you like classical music and you like the flute buy this CD.
Don't be fooled by Gaudy Galway: This CD isn't bad........1999-08-27
The Franck and Prokofiev sonatas were originally released back in 1975 (RCA LRL1-5095). It had a great picture of Galway and Argerich sharing the jacket equally. Given the difficulty of the piano part (to say nothing of the more attractive countenance of Argerich), this was most fitting. And so I am very disappointed that it was replaced by a gaudy picture of James sporting his golden flute. Granted, this release also includes Reinecke's Undine Sonata, with Phillip Moll at the keyboard. In any case, this CD is worth getting, especially on account of the Franck and Prokofiev sonatas. James's flute sound does get a little tiresome after a while because he seems incapable of producing varying tonal shades. Nevertheless, Argerich's playing makes this a worthwhile CD to have.

A must have.......2005-09-08
I am typically not a fan of Jean Pierre's flute playing (I find his tone to be thin and his technical passages to be a bit sloppy). With that said I was very surprised to actually like this CD. This collection is full of great pieces. Like everyone else reviewing I love the Katchaturian Concerto and having played it myself, I can tell you that it is one tough piece. I also adore the last movement of the Ibert concerto. The sonatas in this collection are also great and very well known pieces. This CD collection is a bargain.
The Best 20th Master pieces.......2004-04-03
Your attention is drawn to the fact that in one CD we have concertos and on the other one are sonatas, totalling 2 hrs 10 minutes.
the two French orchestras are superb and the recording is very nice too. Somehow, the recording of the piano part of the sonatas is not equally nice and the pianist is not quite as impressing as the flutist. Furthermore, its up to the audience to judge whether Rampal had slightest past his very prime when he recorded these two records albeit that technically there isn't any sign of obvious aging.
I'm no flutist but my attention is not just attracted by the Khatchatourian concerto: they are more jems than you could possibly imagine. In case you want to have the fullest reportoire of modern composers played by the greatest artist, you definitely shouldn't miss them.
Super Collection of 20th C. Flute Reportoire.......2003-01-09
Here is the collection of 20th century flute reportoire, played by master Rampal.
Ibert, Jolivert, Poulenc, are all here in two disc set with Rampal accompanied by Robert Veyron-Lacroix on piano.
Recording is clear and play is spectacular. Flute lovers will definitely want this in their collection.
A must have for the serious Flutist or 20th Century collectr.......2001-03-10
As a flutist I say that this CD is a must have for any aspiring flutist. It contains THE piece de resistance of the flute repertoire and the performance is simply legendary. Most of these pieces were dedicated to or commissioned by Rampal himself.
For the average collector, you will just adore the Khatchaturian concerto. See why the first movement is so compelling that all over the world audiences could not stop clapping even just after the first movement.

A WORTHY TRIBUTE TO A GREAT ARTIST.......2007-05-07
ISAAC STERN WILL ALWAYS BE UNIQUE AS HE HAD A TONE AND TECHNIQUE WITH THE VIOLIN THAT DEFIES DESCRIPTION. ON THIS RECORDING LISTEN TO THE RONDO FROM BEETHOVEN'S VIOLIN CONCERTO OP 61 - IT IS SIMPLY SPINE TINGLING. ANOTHER EXAMPLE WOULD BE FRITZ KREISLER'S LIEBESLEID HOWEVER TO MY ESTIMATION THE FIRST CD RELEASE OF BEETHOVEN'S VIOLIN SONATA OP 30 NO 2 - 'ALLEGRO CON BRIO' HAS TO BE HEARD BY ANY LOVER OF THE VIOLIN AND IS IN MY OPINION ONE OF THIS GREAT ARTIST'S FINEST RECORDING - BUY THE CD JUST FOR THIS ALONE. EVERYTHING ELSE IS SUPERB SO DON'T HESITATE TO ADD THIS CD IN YOUR COLLECTION.
Good for beginners.......2003-03-01
I am a newbie to classical music. I love this CD. I realize that it doesn't do justice to many works due to the fact that only one track is played from each work, but to people like me, this is a good starting point. From here, I now know of areas of Isaac Stern's body of work that I want to delve into. I also have a better idea of which composers I want to take a closer look at. In my opinion, for a person just starting out in classical music, this is a good "sampler" of classical violin music. It's probably not something for a serious collector due to the fact that it is a collection of previously released works. I would consider it in league with a "greatest hits" album from a rock band. It's not for serious listeners, but it's a good starting point for beginners. This is a good starting point.
A tribute to the artist.......1999-10-20
Of course the playing is magnificent, absolute magic. But does this CD serve any purpose? Very few serious collections are without some Stern offerings in which he plays the COMPLETE WORK. I emphasize those words to get to a complaint I always have with programs that consist of parts of longer works that make little musical sense detached from the context for which they were intended.
The Dvorak "Humoresque," for example, stands up very nicely as a single work; while the first movement of the Beethoven Piano Trio Op. 70 makes you anticipate the wonderful second movement which never comes. And so on and so on. So one will not purchase this for the music but for the artist.
No, I do not know how to fit on one CD a truly fitting tribute to a master musician, except by including only independent short pieces. Unhappily most artists are at their best in longer ones...and there we are again. Yes, all Stern lovers should have this as a momento; others not familiar with his artistry will find this CD a good introduction. The rest of us can seek out the complete recordings.

Customer Reviews:
What results do you get when you mix Decca, Philips, Deutsche Grammophone, and Steinway????.....I'd call them GRAND!!.......2007-04-16
Yes, GRAND, indeed is the word for this spectacular collection of solo piano recordings by the creme-de-la-creme of Decca's, Deutsche Grammophone's, and Philips' vaults.........AWESOME by ALL measure!
Two discs each, in individual deluxe folders, from the archives of Decca, DGG, and Philips........featuring Claudio Arrau, Mitsuko Uchida, Vladimir Horowitz, Maurizio Pollini, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Emil Gilels, Martha Argerich, Wilhelm Kempff, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, and Alfred Brendel........what a list, huh?
And, Wait!.....It gets Better!!! Included on each individual collection are rare, long out of print, recordings....the best of each artist's familiar recordings, and....unknown, never-released recordings.....could it get any better than this???
YES! A bonus disc of "Steinway Legends in the Making".......featuring the incredibly gifted artists Lang Lang, Helene Grimaud, and Yundi Li....how great it is to hear these young artists against their towering predecessors of keyboard artistry.
Also included is a forty page deluxe book with tons of photos and memorabilia from Steinway. Remember, all these pianists were solid, dedicated, Steinway artists, and would not play anything else.
While the presentation of these recordings simply could never match or meet the level of the performances themselves (lucky us that they were recorded and preserved so we may hear them again and again, just as fresh and wonderful as the first time), the package IS pretty darned AWESOME!!! The whole collection, book included, fits inside a perfectly proportioned Steinway Piano shaped box, complete with opening lid and support to hold it up, revealing the frame and strings below, which also lifts up to reveal the booklet and individual folders and discs beneath. The entire "piano" itself slips into an oversized slipcase.
What a unique and beautiful set this truly is. Sadly, it was released as a deluxe set in very few numbers. But, luckily, the individual two disc sets by each artist are available separately, so at least the recordings are available still to those who want them.***
Luckily, I knew about this collection many many months before it's limited release and had pre-ordered my set (very happy bear, indeed). It's a joy just to look at this set, and also to know that these "performances" are here in my home for me to enjoy over and over again and again.
To my knowledge, I am unaware of individual companies working together before (Decca, DGG, Philips, and Steinway in this case) to present this type of collection as a "unified" set, and we truly are very lucky beneficiaries of this wonderful partnership of these companies.
My only "complaint"......the outer slipcase that the "piano box" slides into is made of a very inferior weight of paperboard to support such a heavy presentation as this, and is so flimsy that it will not stand up to much use before it simply disintigrates. Sort of too bad, as the rest of the set/presentation is so first rate...shame on you folks...I can't think of anybody who would not have paid a few dollars more for a suitable slipcase for this beautiful set. ~operabruin
***June 22, 2007...I just found out that this set is now, once again, available! Do yourself a favor, and get a copy NOW, before it is gone again! I just found it on another site [classical only online seller], and when I came back here to amazon to make this notation, I also see that they have it in stock again!!! What a stroke of luck for those of you who want this set. Trust me, it is just beautiful, and one of the most unique items you have ever seen! ~operabruin
Steinway Ledgends.......2007-03-09
The quality of the pianos and recording is breath taking says my friend, a professional tuner and former buyer of American & European pianos . And I was just stunned by the playing of these masters...the Liszt pieces of Kempff were were a revelation as was Gilels, and the supreme Horowitz..What is astounding to me is the presence of the piano ( played with a moderately good system only); it is as if they were there in the room.
