The life of Teresa Sterne is as noteworthy as the label she once presided over (Nonesuch). As a child prodigy, she successfully filled world-class auditoriums in the 1940s with audiences eager to hear her piano playing. Then, inexplicably, Sterne abandoned her concert career only to resurface as the leader behind Nonesuch Records in the late 1960s, turning the budget classical label into one of the more adventurous and consistently rewarding labels around (and generally keeping quiet about her earlier fame). Half of this double-CD tribute collects recordings of a teenage Sterne at the keyboard; the second disc is devoted to some of the finest recordings from her Nonesuch tenure (1965-1979)--both are engrossing.

Ignore the surface noise on Sterne's disc (no small task on the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20), and you'll hear a young pianist in fine form--she is expressive, and boasts crisp articulation and fine technique. She dances through Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13 with riveting intensity; on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (with the New York Philharmonic), she shows a sensitive but no less virtuosic side. On the second disc, we get a virtual best-of for Nonesuch Records, including tracks by Joshua Rifkin, Paul Jacobs, and William Bolcom. Hard to imagine anyone doing it these days, but in one five-year period (1970-1975), Nonesuch released albums featuring the music of Stephen Foster, Edgar Varese, George Crumb, and a platter of Bulgarian folk tunes. They're all here. Now battling Lou Gehrig's disease, Sterne herself may be unable to celebrate this release, but for anyone who has treasured a release from Nonesuch's glory days, it's a moving tribute. --Jason Verlinde

    2 out of 5 stars needs a re-re-release.......2006-03-06

It was a terrible marketing decision to use the Bach Cello Suites as a filler for the other modernistic pieces that they were coupled with in this ECM New Series featuring Thomas Demenga. The liner notes go to great lengths to sell the buyer on the ties that bind the Bach to the 20th century composers but it sounds more like begging than explaining. The Zimmerman, the Hosokawa, Yun, Verese, Holliger and Carter pieces need to be collected together on a series of recordings and the Bach either jettisoned or sequestered. Maybe someday a re-release will save what's good about this series and reduce 6 mediocre CD recordings down to what should be 3. Buy the Bach elsewhere--there are over a dozen great choices.

4 out of 5 stars Not a first choice, but some good performances.......2003-12-18

This disc is one in a series of ECM recordings devoted to pairing the Bach cello suites with works by contemporary composers (other volumes feature music by Zimmermann, Veress, Holliger, Yun and Hosokawa). In this volume, Bach's Third Cello Suite is coupled with a major work (Triple Duo) by the American composer Elliott Carter, 95 this year, and three minor works of his (Esprit rude/Esprit doux, Enchanted Preludes, Riconoscenza per Goffredo Petrassi).

Thomas Demenga gives a strong, lively performance of the Bach. Its energy and lithe suppleness make it highly enjoyable to listen to, though I feel he lets the tension sag too much in the Sarabande. It's not a first choice, but no-one need feel short-changed by this performance. Nonetheless, I doubt listeners will be choosing whether or not to buy this disc on the basis of the Bach.

For contemporary music lovers, the primary interest in this disc starts with the Carter miniatures, each of about five minutes' duration. Esprit rude/Esprit doux mixes the distinctive sonorities of flute and clarinet to delightful effect, while Enchanted Preludes contrasts the very different sounds of flute and cello. Riconoscenza is a complex yet warm tribute for solo violin, sounding both contemporary and Bachian in its mixture of elegance and passion.

The major Carter work here, though, is the Triple Duo. A hyper-complex piece with three different duos (flute and clarinet, piano and percussion, violin and cello) playing distinctively different music, often simultaneously, this is a tough work to get a hang of, but well worth the effort. It moves over 20 minutes through a wide range of colors and moods before the emphatic close.

As mentioned before, the Bach would not be a first choice. As for the Carter, this disc comes up against some stiff competition, particularly the Nouvelle Ensemble Moderne disc on ATMA, which contains all four Carter works on this recording, plus another five (including an excellent performance of the recent Clarinet Concerto). In my opinion, the ATMA disc takes the plaudits for the performance of the Triple Duo, which is more lithe and witty than the heavier, more serious performance here, and brings out the music's classical lines more effectively. For Esprit rude/Esprit doux and Enchanted Preludes, the current disc will do very nicely (it is superior to the ATMA recording in both works), while for Riconoscenza both this disc and the ATMA one are comfortably outclassed by two other ECM discs: one with Michelle Makarski playing; the other with Thomas Zehetmair giving an outstanding performance of Riconoscenza as part of the Four Lauds (an almost neo-Bachian suite in which Riconoscenza has now been incorporated).

5 out of 5 stars Triple Duo is the wildest chamber music imaginable........1999-07-04

I can't say about the other recording of "Triple Duo" (by Fires of London, for whom it was written) but the version here is by excellent musicians. It's an absolutely spectacular piece--19 minutes of chamber music by a mixed group as wild as you can imagine, with brilliant riffs coming from all six instruments in overlapping waves. "Enchanted Preludes" is also superb, the cello chasing the mercurial flute in a sort of strange courtship dance. Oh yeah, the Bach is pretty good too! (Actually, Demenga has to rival Yo Yo Ma for technique and warmth, though I think the recording of the Bach suite is done with a little too much echo.)
