Amazon.com essential recording

During her far-too-brief career, cellist Jacqueline du Pré exhibited an almost oracular power of communication. Her performances bristled with the kind of brilliant electricity that could change lives and convert listeners to a lifelong love of music. Happily, it's possible to experience a sense of that power from the recordings du Pré completed before multiple sclerosis halted her career as a performer in the early 1970s. This set provides a splendid portrait--at bargain price--of du Pré's unmistakable personality: the astonishingly original yet convincing phrasing, raw energy, and ability to make her instrument sound uncannily like a human voice (du Pré was after all a favored student of Mstislav Rostropovich). Her rendition of Haydn's Concerto in C is clearly cast in a romantic--and nowadays perhaps unfashionable--mold, yet du Pré's big, bold tone carries the musical line forward with exhilarating presence. It's a demeanor that proves especially reassuring for the quirkily mercurial inventions of Boccherini. Yet du Pré most indelibly leaves her signature on the work that became her hallmark, Edward Elgar's E Minor Concerto, grafting a deeply personal level of expression onto the score's rich post-World War I melancholy. In the Schumann, du Pré makes an eloquently passionate protagonist. A similar sense of excitement is to be heard in Dvorák's Concerto--performed near the end of her career--above all in the flame of inspiration she evidently sparks from the orchestra in the serene close of its slow movement. This is a supremely rewarding collection for the beginner and aficionado alike. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars I THOUGHT I had heard these concertos,,,.......2007-04-04

UNTIL I was fortunate enough to have heard them performed by Jacqueline du Pre!!!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Her superb playing, along with truly masterful
interpretative skills, just "comes pouring out of the speakers!"
Also, the orchestras were obviously truly inspired by these opportunities to perform and record with one of the greatest musicians of all time.
The sound quality is excellent, as is the separation and clarity of both the soloist's and orchestral performances. The overall dynanism is also top notch - I found I had to lower the volume substantially from my normal
system loudness levels.
I've enjoyed this set so much I'll probably wind up buying everything from Amazon that EMI has produced with Jacqueline du Pre's name on it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Selection.......2007-02-27

The choice of concertos is excellent and the artistry of Jacqueline du Pre is exceptional. The Schumann and Saint-Saens works are truly beautiful.

The album is a fitting tribute to the tragic loss of an incredible young talent.

4 out of 5 stars A sassy dame.......2007-02-20

I love this CD. It came extremely fast to NZ and a bonus too as I was expecting only one cd not three!
While Dvorak is currently my favourite, other composers featured here have been growing on me.
Never been a Cello devotee in the past, but I am enjoying this new phase of my musical listening.
The late Ms du Pre plays with vigor and assertiveness, yet manages to convey those moving and sublime moments when needed.
Most enjoyable. Thanky you

5 out of 5 stars Virtuosic Trumpet: Baroque And Classical Showcase.......2004-02-22

This album is an incredible showcase for the trumpet and the orchestra, in other words, the trumpet concerto. Hakan Hardenberger, the featured trumpet player, is highly talented and at the top of his game. Even the great jazz and classical trumpeter Winston Marsalis does'nt seem to reach the flights of fancy on the trumpet as does Hakan Hardenberger. Hardenberger masters the trumpet to perfection, capturing every nuance and every tone, from fortissimo fanfares to the softest pianissimo. On this compilation are the trumpet concerti of Baroque and Classical Era composers, among them Corelli and Albinoni and the Classical masters Franz Joseph Haydn and Leopold Mozart, Mozart's father. The sheer scale and magnetism of this music cannot be neglected. It is the greatest gathering of trumpet concerti ever made. The trumpet was perhaps the most fascinating instrument for Baroque composers. The trumpet produces grand, triumphant tones when played forte. It was an instrument that was displayed in ceremonial pomp- weddings, coronations and marches. The Baroque composers were sponsored by kings so they were expected to compose music for trumpet, which could be expressive not only as a fanfare for the king himself, but as an instrument of many dynamics. It can be played softly and slowly, which seems to create a nocturnal, reflective mood and staccato and fast-paced which made the music sound exciting and lively. In my opinion, it was the premier instrument of the Baroque Age.

The cd opens with the Trumpet Concerto In E Flat Major by Johann Hummel. This colorful piece is particularily impressive as it really explores the dynamic potential for the trumpet. It's third movement, the Rondo, is very exciting music, as it is played very fast and in a bouncy, dance-like manner. The Trumpet Concerto by Stamitz, Hertel and Richter are very stylish and must have been highly admired in the Baroque Era. The Trumpet concerto in E by Franz Joseph Haydn, who influenced Mozart, is beautiful, especially in its serenade-style andante second movement. In the last cd, Leopold Mozart's trumpet concerto is featured, and it's a good work. Perhaps his son Mozart greatly admired it, though Mozart did'nt really expand on trumpet concerti himself nor really ever showcased the instrument greatly. There are trumpet arrangements for the famous Albinoni Adagio in G, which on this version, sounds chilling, dark and dramatic. The cd concludes with trumpet versions of Bach's Organ Preludes and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria.

4 out of 5 stars superb playing.......2003-10-30

Hardenberger is indeed an extraordinary. The playing is right up there with the best of them. One thing unique to hardnberger is his ability to lock in ever note of every passage reguardless of register, speed, etc. In addition he playes with great character. The only reason i give hims less than 5 stars is because his lyricism, the most important thing, is surpassed by Maurice Andre and Phil Smith without questiong. especially after seing all of them live and buying their CDs. He is definitely among the greatests ever.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Trumpeter in the Business.......2003-05-25

It's a rare treat for a reviewer when he can throw caution to the winds and go out on a limb for a musician. This is such an occasion for me. Hakan Hardenberger is a phenomenon. I think he is the Babe Ruth, the Wayne Gretzky, the Michael Jordan, the Vladimir Horowitz, the Jascha Heifetz of trumpet players.

Hardenberger is a Swedish trumpeter who made his first recording (Haydn, Hummel, Hertel, and Stamitz trumpet concertos, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner, on Philips) in 1986 when he was only 25 years old (in the cover photo of the original CD he looks like a boy). The first time I played this debut CD of his, my jaw dropped and I could hardly believe my ears. His playing was a revelation--absolutely stunning. I'd never heard trumpet playing to compare with it. In my opinion, with his first two CDs young Hardenberger not only moved into the top rank of trumpeters; he swept right past his competitors to the head of the class. I've compared a number of his baroque concerto performances, here and elsewhere, with those of other famous trumpeters, and he always comes out on top. I believe him to be in a league of his own. He has everything: virtuosity and technique to burn, dead-on intonation, clean trills, smooth legato, expressive shading, beauty of tone, brilliant high notes, enormous dynamic range. He is also a sound musician, with taste and a sense of style. His arsenal is complete and unassailable; there is no chink in his armor.

Everything that was on that debut CD is now in this Philips Duo set, which is a much better value, because it offers two generously filled CDs--72:55 and 78:27--for the price of one, adding most of the contents of two later Hardenberger CDs of baroque music for trumpet (the recordings here were made from 1986 through 1993). It's a good buy, and if you're going to own only one collection of baroque trumpet music, this is the one I'd recommend.

The trumpet has always been a difficult instrument to record and reproduce accurately. Here, although the consistently excellent digital recording presents Hardenberger very much front and center, it captures the timbre, "bite," and wide dynamic range of his trumpet with exemplary vividness and fidelity. On a top-quality playback system, he sounds like he's standing right between the speakers playing for you. And what playing it is! Not to be missed.

Hardenberger's second CD, of Telemann Trumpet Concertos, also accompanied by the ASMF, this time under Iona Brown, was recorded in 1987 (again on Philips). It too is marvelous, fully as impressive as his first CD, but unfortunately none of it is included in the Philips Duo reviewed here, so you have to acquire it separately. It's well worth it.

Long live the king!

5 out of 5 stars Virtuosic... Incredible.......2001-08-06

You don't have to be a fan of the instrument in order to appreciate and become overwhelmed by the beauty, the splendor and acrobatics of the trumpet. In the Baroque era, it was a instrument for the royal treatment and heralded arrival of kings and war. The performances here are excellent- Hardenberger, I Musici and Neville Marriner and his orchestra deliver virtuosic renditions of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E flat, Hummel's, Hertel's, Molter's and Albinoni's concerti, as well as incredible arrangements of Ave Maria by Bach and Albinoni's Adagio.

5 out of 5 stars A non-trumpet player's view..........2001-02-12

Although I love classical music and have done so for a long time, I must confess that I am not a trumpet player. With that said, I must say that these two CDs are wonderful. My first recording of the Hummel and the Haydn concertos was the second Marsalis/Leppard/ECO recording on Sony Classical (titled Wynton Marsalis - The London Concert). Inexperienced with trumpet recordings at the time, I really treasured the CD. After all, a big name artist known for his virtuosity was performing the technically demanding concertos. What more could you ask for? After a while, though, I began to feel that Marsalis didn't really do it for me in these works. Sure, he played with a flair (and what a flair it was), but he lacked the focused, rich tone that I've come to associate with great trumpet players (Herseth comes to mind here).

The current reviewed recording, on the other hand, is quite a piece of gem. Even though I have never heard of Hardenberger before (you trumpet players out there please excuse my ignorance), he delivers precisely what I am looking for. Hardenberger has the centered tone that most trumpeters would envy, yet he lacked none of the technical virtuosity needed for the music. His vibrato is light and very classical (as opposed to the wider jazz vibrato). On top of all that, he shows much understanding and affinity for the various works on these two CDs.

All of this for the price of 1 CD. An excellent introduction to the core trumpet repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars Rostropovich is marvelous, but which version to choose?.......2006-08-09

Rostropovich plays with such panache and good humor in both these Haydn concertos that there's no room for complaint--he's brilliant technically and is backed by alert, sprightly accompaniments from Marriner and the ASMF. At 50 min., this CD isn't much of a bargain, however. You can get the First Concerto from Rostropovich two other ways. One is a Decca performance with Benjamin Britten making twice as much of the orchestral part as Marriner does. The finale is faster, too, which allows Rostropovich to astound us even more. But that CD only has him in this piece, the rest being filled out with other Haydn concerti for winds.

There is also a DG recording of both concertos under Paul Sacher that I remember from the Sixties. It's as brilliant as this CD but not as well recorded. The plus side is that DG's budget reissue contains cello concertos by Boccherini, so the timing is much more generous. These are just random thoughts about various Rostropovich versions--this one is certainly appealing on its own and delivers the goods on all counts..

5 out of 5 stars Haydn's contribution to the cello repertoire.......2005-07-30

After Vivaldi and Boccherini - both of which who wrote a lot of music for the cello - there was not so much writing for the cello from the major composers until Beethoven's dramatic cello sonatas, but even Beethoven did not compose a cello concerto. Neither did Mozart or Schubert. But, in the late 18th century, Joseph Haydn wrote two very melodic and virtuostic cello concertos composed with his typical Vienesse good taste to give cello players and enthusiasts through the ages something to truly celebrate.

Are these recordings of the ASMF and Rostropovich deserving of the accolade of "Great Recording of the Century?" Maybe, I'm not sure what the measure is to get that title. But certainly listening to these concertos, you clearly get a sense of a great performance by both Rostro but equally from the ASMF orchestra whose beautiful tone, tempos and interaction with the soloist all seem to be well judged and well-suited to Haydn - whose music always seemed to be composed with such finesse and fine taste. The EMI sound also is really excellent - full and balanced.

These cello concertos feature very attractive and lyrical cello parts but also difficult technical passages that should particularly delight the cello enthusiasts. Mr. Rostropovich blazes through these sections with deft and confidence that is impressive to hear. While his style may seem at times to be "heavy," it does not mean it is all wrong or that he is incapable of exuding a lyrical smoothness. His style is his style - which is one of a dramatic and powerful tone (coming from his deep and powerful Stradivarius cello). Other cellists may convey more of a "sweeter" style, but Mr. Rostropovich's precise and bold playing here combined with the superb ASMF performance and vivid sound is a winner to me.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much of a Myth to call it Great Recording.......2003-03-17

There is a DVD version of the pieces showing exactly how he played and conducted the two pieces. Likewise there is a DVD for his Dvorak which is, surprisingly enough, very good indeed--the best among the three pieces.

One would expect Haydn to be a bit more classical. Rostropovich is indeed too heavy-handed here, that is exactly one of the reasons why I prefer, as far as his Beethoven is concerned, the primitive recording of Casals to his 24 bit recording with Richter. But that was Beethoven where more romanticism is permissible or even appropriate. More so for Dvorak where more intensity and more drama is justified.

Perhaps the Russian conductor got it right: the artists there and then had so much anger and sorrow that they either take to the wine or spit it out in their playing. Go for his Dvorak instead of his Haydn. But to be fair, he played the second concerto better.

In terms of technique especially in it's narrow sense, Rostropovich is hard to surpass. But that doesn't include Casals and Feuermann or even Shafran. But is it necessary to have one's technique developed that way? Piatigorsky didn't have that kind of technique, but he had much more musicality and showmanship. Horowitz ranked Piatigorsky higher than Rostropovich. Oistrakh, Rostropovich's idol, had disputedly a "better command" of the violin than Menuhin ( Menuhin's own word which is of course, more a matter of semantics ), but Perlman said Menuhin had such layers of palette which are not equally apparent from Oistrakh.

Like Horowitz at the piano, both Russians are so tense when playing music. To apply Arrau's theory, how could music flow from one's heart and soul and gets it's way to the instrument if one is so tense: it's all blocked! Well, not altogether so with Rostropovich. But still, he is too heavy-handed and unnecessarily tense at times.

Fournier didn't play like that, nor did Piatigorsky. Shafran, who shared the gold medel of two world competitions with Rostropovich, didn't. There was an eminent cellist who commented that it's a pity that Yoyo learned from Rostropovich, otherwise Ma might play even better. True in every sense of the his word.

4 out of 5 stars Very fine cello playing, mediocre conducting.......2000-11-14

I'd recommend this recording overall, for Slava's glowing tone and impeccable technique. But the conducting is just adequate and a bit unanimous. Still, the price is right, the sound is great, and this is a worthwhile CD, though "Great Recording of the Century" is a bit much. I also agree with those who say you should also get Ma/English Chamber Orchestra (Sony), which is better overall.

3 out of 5 stars More suited towards the C major........2000-05-12

A great recording of the Haydn C, displaying Slava's wonderful boisterous qualities with the cello. However, with the D major concerto having so many smooth melodic lines, it does not in my opinion go well with this heavy style of playing. The Yo-Yo Ma recording of the Haydn D is very beautiful. Buy this for the C, and Yo Yo for the D.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly........2003-09-20

That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.

5 out of 5 stars A must have album!.......2001-09-17

The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.

5 out of 5 stars Pyrotechnics.......2001-06-21

Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the trumpet player's library!.......1999-09-23

If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Budget Brahms .......2007-03-04

This is a budget Brahms set to cherish. I want to begin with addressing Szeryng's account of the violin concerto, which has now become one of my top three favorites of the oft recorded masterpiece. This was my first encounter with Szeryng in the Brahms concerto (I believe there is another recording in print with him under Dorati); however, I knew he was quite capable in Brahms as evidenced through his immaculate set of the violin sonatas with Rubinstein. I had no idea he was this capable. His entrance is powerful and the violin is miked pretty far forward giving us a very full tone from the outset. It only gets better from here. The adagio is bar-none the most expressive I have ever encountered, with Szeryng implementing the perfect blend of rubato/vibrato while keeping a stedy tempo. The finale is grand. Szeryng is technically brilliant, but not at the expense of warmth and detail. Haitink and the RCO are in top form, especially in the first movement where the orchestral tuttis are crisp with a Toscanini-like quality (by the way, the candenza Szeryng uses in the first movement is the Joachim [thank God]). As for the double concerto with Starker.... it's a great interpretation with some new things to say (especially in the finale); but, it really just gets outshined by the preceding three tracks. All in all, the price of this budget set is worth it just for this out of print (in any other reissue in the U.S. that is) version of the Violin concerto which stands tall with Perlman, Heifetz, and Oistrakh, as one of the greatest out there.

As for the piano concertos with Brendel, they are also very well interpreted; especially the second. In the B-flat major, Brendel and Haitink take pretty standard tempi, and although I wish Brendel was a bit more forceful and played with a bit less staccato at some points in the outer movements, the slow movement is sublime. Overall the second concerto, while probably not measuring up to the greats (Fleisher/Richter/Arrau/ etc.) is a success. I am not as enthusiastic about the D minor, mostly due to the absence of Haitink on the podium. Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt is directing and gives us a pretty weak orchestral accompaniment in a concerto which depends on it the most. This reading is simply no match for the Fleisher or Arrau recordings. However, this is a minor weak spot in three discs of otherwise very compelling Brahms. Every one of the overtures are done masterfully, and this may be one of my all time favorite versions of the Haydn variations, with Haitink bringing in that same Toscanini-like tautness which worked so well in the violin concerto.

So, at budget price, you need this collection; if for nothing else than one of the greatest Brahms violin concerto performances of all time (just think of the other two discs as bonuses). A more than justified addition to any collection.

It's amazing how great musicians come in pairs--think of Bach and Handel, Haydn and Mozart--and often with complimentary abilities. Mozart was the ultimate concerto composer, Haydn the great symphonist. And yet each composed fine--indeed sublime--works in the other's "territory." Haydn's Violin Concertos are early works, but they have always been favored by violinists on account of their gracefully-written and elegant solo parts, to say nothing of their perfect suitability for performance by amateurs and chamber orchestras. Salvatore Accardo performs these charming pieces with consummate taste as well as a healthy dose of energy. The two cello concertos make a superb bonus, and the price is "two for one." --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Haynd at its best.......2001-08-20

In my humble opinion, these are Haydn's best cello concertos. Written around 1765 with some of Haydn's virtuoso friends in mind, both concertos give the listeners the opportunity to enjoy magnificent solo interpretations (Salvatore Accardo in this recoding). Please take a moment to listen to the adagios in both concertos and enjoy the magnificent English Chamber Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars top drawer.......2007-02-11

i don't find ma's sound "immaculate but thin" at all. i find it well integrated with the orchestra and and immensely powerful. i highly recommend this recording. the concerto in C is a treasure.

4 out of 5 stars A Splendid Performance.......2002-02-28

I'm not very familiar with these concerti, but I think that this is a fine performance, wonderfully recorded. People can spend hours arguing over who performs it better, whether it's Rostropovich, Casals, Du Pre, Starker, whatever. They usually resort to highly personal and more-or-less improvised language, feeble attempts to describe what is really a very complex style and personality. They are all different performers with a different sense of color. I'm sure the other performances of these concerti are wonderful as well. This, though, is a great recording also.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Haydn.......2001-12-28

Out of all the recordings I have heard of these two concertos (Rostropovich, Du Pre....), this one is the best. However, it all depends on what you want these pieces to sound like. If you like unbridled intensity and passion, then I would recommend the recording by Rostropovich (with Academy of St.Martin in The Fields). As far as the C Major concerto goes, I believe that the style of Rostropovich works very well. However, the D Major requires much more delicacy and finesse. And this is a quality that Yo-Yo Ma possesses in enormous quantities. His almost flawless technique and intonation makes the D Major an especially enjoyable experience. However, the C Major is also beautifully played and thoughtfully interpreted. It contains much of the excitement of Rostropovich while sounding a little more refined (as Haydn should sound, in my opinion). The English Chamber Orchestra provides a very steady and well balanced accompaniment and thus if you want one CD with both Haydn concertos at the best price, this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Ma Wows Yet Again!.......2001-02-23

As a young cellist, I found this to be an extremely beautiful recording of the two concertos. I really enjoyed Ma's phrasings in the C Major, which are quite different from, say, Rostropovich's recording of the same. I also found his use of dynamics to be outstanding. The contrasts are there, but not overly emphasized (as many performers do to pieces from this period). An outstanding buy.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but it falls short of Du Pre's Recordings.......2000-02-23

Maybe this is a case of an opinion being forever formed by the first recording I heard of two pieces I love. Ma is a true virtuoso, but compared to Du Pre's recordings from the late '60's and early 70's with Barenboim and Barbirolli, he seems so restrained. You can argue that the choice to have the cello more integrated with the orchestra is more in the classical rather than romantic mode, so Ma is perhaps being more faithful to Haydn. But I think when you hear the solo notes leap like electricity from Du Pre's instrument, you won't care. There's a passion and fire in Du Pre's performances that seems lacking behing Ma's immaculate but somewhat thin sound. So overall these performances of Ma left me a little dissatisfied. A good second choice, but still a second choice.

3 out of 5 stars Good Maurice Andre, bad others.......2004-01-09

Maurice Andre's playing is great, however he only plays on the last two pieces. The other players are not as good as Maurice, but their interpretations are still intertesting.

2 out of 5 stars this is not maurice, not a definitive recording.......2003-02-08

this recording is definitely NOT maurice andre recording. I have studied maurices playing for many years and i have compared the playing in this CD with other Recordings of Maurice playing the Haydn and Hummel. Theres no way anyone who has heard both could mistake this trumpet player for Maurice. THe playing is good, and it is a good supplement to you collection of recordings of these popular trumpet concertos, but it is not a staple of any collection as Maurice Andre IS. Articulation and tone are simply not on the same level as Maurice and the tone is incompatible with maurices.

1 out of 5 stars Wow! Maurice Andre plays Haydn & Hummel. Oh wait, it's not.......2000-10-27

I own this CD and it clearly states that Tarr is playing the Haydn and the Hummel. This is definitely not Edward Tarr's best album. This is a horrible recording of the hummel if you ask me. My advice is to find an actual Maurice Andre Recording on the EMI label. I have one that is recorded with Berlin and Karajan. This is my favorite Hummel recording. Buy it, not this.

    3 out of 5 stars Misnomer label.......1999-09-05

I own this CD and although the music repertoire is great, there is only 2 of the 6 pieces which are played by Maurice Andre. If you want to hear Andre play the famous Haydn concerto in E flat major you are out of luck.

5 out of 5 stars Correction, this IS a Maurice Andre recording!.......1999-08-15

This is a Maurice Andre recording, NOT Tarr as the list of performers shows.

4 out of 5 stars Great century classics of du Pre at budget price.......2004-05-27

EMI Classics releases this mid-line "Great Recordings of the Century" compilation that samples cello concertos of Haydn and Boccherini. Cellist Jacqueline du Pre passed at the summit of her career but no doubt this compilation, which is once again a miniature and a re-release of works that are already available in numerous CDs, confirms her place in the pantheon of cellists.

This compilation consists of Cello Concerto No.1 in C and Cello Concerto No.2 in D by Haydn, and Cello Concerto in B flat by Boccherini. Once again it recapitulates du Pre's agile, oracular power of communication. The famous 1967 recordings of these concertos still may raise eyebrows amongst today's authentic performance hall. Even though these three pieces may be available from previous full-price releases, it is doubtful whether these selections have ever been mastered on disc with such immaculate, passionate intensity, which is the reason why I decide to get this compilation.

The Haydn C major, under du Pre's rendition, truly accentuates its formal elegance and economy and its fresh, spirited thematic ideas. Few cellists could even compete with her phenomenal dexterity of fingers and bowing wrist which manifested in the delicacy of the nuance. Each of the three movements of the C major is in full sonata form. The imposing but asymmetrical main theme dominates the first movement. Du Pre takes up and richly embellishes the principal theme. The mid development culminates in a powerful ritornello that pulls the music back to C major for the recapitulation.

The Haydn D major is in complete contrariety to the C major. It is a far more relaxed, leisure, and expansive work than its predecessor, with each note being unfolded leisurely. The opening theme of the D major sets the tone while a secondary theme in the orchestral ritornello is executed in a decorous manner. The development is discursive with little of Haydn's signature harmonic tension. This piece lacks the romantic, bold tone in C major that carries the musical line forward in an exhilarating presence.

As many listeners have known, a German composer and cellist by the name of Friedrich Grützmacher in 1895 did a major overhaul of Bocherini's Cello Concerto in B flat, giving it a romantic quality Boccherini never would have known. The most outrageous arrangement was the replacement of the slow movement with a more bold, intense adagio movement that lends the piece's romantic touch. And again du Pre's rendition is immaculate.

This is a budget-priced CD with a sampling of some of du Pre's greatest performances that are probably unmatched even by today's standards.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Du Pre, Unnecessary Release.......2003-07-17

This CD confirms the great cellist Jacqueline Du Pre in a place of well deserved honor -- in the elite company of the world's best classical performers and conductors as featured in EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" series. The problem is everyone already knew she was great and we have all had access to these recordings previously on CD. However, this mid-line title does make for a much better release than the still available full-price CD coupling one of the two Haydn Cello Concertos featured here with her recording of the Dvorak with then hubby Barenboim. However, the best way to get these magnificent works is in one of several larger EMI collections of Du Pre playing Cello Concertos -- my favorite being the 4-CD "The Concerto Collection." Du Pre's artistry is so incredible that it makes any and all purchases worth it.
