Terrific Prokofiev & Rachmaninov.......2005-04-14
These concerto recordings date from 1952 (Rimsky-Korsakov), 1961 (Prokofiev) and 1963 (Rachmaninov). Lev Oborin delivers a virtuoso account of the one-movement Rimsky-Korsakov Piano Concerto, with a very sympathetic accompaniment by the under-rated Nikolai Anosov. For its greater drama and slightly better sound, I still prefer the 1952 Sviatoslav Richter on a Melodiya CD (coupled with Richter accounts of 1st concertos by Prokofiev and Glazunov, all conducted by Kondrashin).
My long-standing favorites in the Prokofiev 1st Piano Concerto have been Richter/Ancerl (Supraphon), the aforementioned Richter/Kondrashin (Melodiya), and Katz/Boult (Cembal d'Amour, with an excellent Khachaturian Piano Concerto that includes the weird part for flexatone). Well, now I have another: Kerer and Kondrashin are absolutely on fire! This would probably be my sole choice if forced to have just one recording.
But I have saved the best for last: this Rachmaninov 2nd Piano Concerto, apparently a live radio broadcast in decent stereo, is THE greatest performance of the work I have ever heard. I had never encountered Kerer's piano playing before buying this CD: he was a Russian keyboard titan whose career was severely disrupted by several years of imprisonment in Stalinist concentration camps. Kerer and Kondrashin are a superb team in this impassioned collaboration. Frankly, I never thought this work could bring tears to my eyes, but this performance of it proved me wrong.
A wonderful CD.
