This is exquisite music of Bach, Handel, Telemann and Vivaldi featuring this long renowned principal oboeist of Chicago Symphony, Ray Still, along with Conant and Sharrow.

Particularly pleasing to this reviewer is the Sonata in G Minor by J.S. Bach, with its harpsichord/oboe duet.
Charmed by the basson work on Handel's Sonata No.1 in C minor and the Tempo di Menuetto of Telemann's Partita II.

Showcases the tonal genius and rhythm of this talented oboeist.

What a joy to have some new material released by this incomparable musician. There's a voice-like, multi-textured,colorful quality about the oboe sound we hear on this CD! And I smile to hear Romantic qualities brought out in this Baroque literature. Track 4 made me weep; not necessarily with sadness, but with some feeling much larger. I look forward to hearing more of Mr. Still's recordings-

What distinguishes Ray Still from lesser oboists is his incredible expressiveness and rock-solid rhythm. That's how I can tell if he is the performer when I hear an oboe recording on the radio. Most of his solo recordings (including an amazing Bach Wedding Cantata with Kathleen Battle) are out of print, so this 70 minute disk of Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi sonatas and three Telemann partitas (from "Kleine Kammermusik") is most welcome. My personal favorites are the Telemann partitas, mainly because they are so varied and expressive. An added bonus is a 20 page booklet about Still's career. His goal is to play like one of the great singers, and he achieves it.

This CD was really great and cheaply priced for such quality flute music! I agree that Bradley Garner isn't a Julius Baker, but he really complements Julius' exquisite tone. I suggest any person who loves great flute music either for entertainment or use should buy this CD, I mean really how could you refuse the price?!

I love this CD! Beautiful works. Julius Baker plays with only fine musicians. Bradley Garner is no Julius Baker, but one of the Amazon reviewers was to hard on him! Its wonderful that this CD is so affordible, so many people can get to know this great flutist Julius Baker. One of the very best musicians ever!

Music I grew up with and loved.......2005-08-05

My parents had this record and played it over and over again, along with Segovia's Bach recordings. They're the reason I took up classical guitar. The album uses non-traditional (for this kind of music anyway) instruments, yet doesn't disrespect the music in any way. To this day one of my favorite arrangements for the Sonata in G minor Larghetto. I've been trying to get a copy of this album on CD as my family considers our vinyl copy an "heirloom". Sadly I can't seem to find any online. I guess I'll just have to keep visiting amazon.com for the audio samples! Sony, have a heart!

or just for relaxing and organizing your thoughts. The pieces are familiar even to people who think they've never heard Baroque music, and the playing is so impressive and musical that my "I Hate Classical Music" teenage son was blown away!

Bach's Most Galante Style.......2007-05-21

The viola da gamba sonatas are strikingly different from the solo cello sonatas -- less moody, less profound, but wonderfully melodic and decorative. In a sense, they look forward to the courtly styles of Bach's sons rather than to the spiritual/intellectual style of Bach Senior. This performance is aptly praised by the previous reviewer, Mr. Konczal. I'll offer a curious tip: because of the relatively equal dynamics of these pieces, unlike most of Bach,they can be "heard" nicely on a car audio system. I often listen to them on long drives.

Vigorous performances that will please fans of Bach or Baroque music.......2007-05-20

Is there room in the world of recorded music for yet another Bach CD? Of course - especially when the results are this good. Harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock and violist Jonathan Manson deliver vigorous performances of Bach's Sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord, achieving a rich texture and visceral beauty that should appeal to any Bach or Baroque fan.

Bach's three sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord (BWVs 1027, 1028 and 1029) comprise most of the running time. Pinnock and Mason present them out of sequence, opening with the sonata in G minor (BWV 1029) so that its lively first movement begins the disc. Bach's use of ritornello (recurring motifs which reappear in fragments to establish thematic unity) infuses this work with a concerto-like quality. BWVs 1027 and 1028 follow; in these, Bach follows the four-movement, slow-fast-slow-fast form developed by Italian composers such as Corelli.

The program ends with Sonata in G minor (BWV1030b). Bach may have written the top part for oboe, rather than viola da gamba, but it's hard to quibble with Pinnock and Manson's interpretation.

Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates Baroque music or the works of J. S. Bach.

From listening to the samples of this compact disk and purchasing this fine musical treat, I have entered a whole new wonderful world of music. The first four samples Amazon supplies are enchanting, but the fifth selection touches the inner heart. I have purchased this CD, listened to its entirety, and fallen in love with it. My favorite selection is not included in the samples, but "O, Divine Redeemer!" takes your breath away! It gives you great emotional feelings that make you feel like you are praying your deepest prayer. The wonderful soprano and the delightful oboe are uniquely combined to warm the soul.
