This recording presents music by two Scarlattis: Alessandro (1660-1725), composer of innumerable vocal and chamber works, and his son Domenico (1685-1757), famous mostly for his several hundred keyboard sonatas. Alessandro is represented by six Concerti Grossi, a Sonata, and a Sinfonia; Domenico by three Sinfonias. All feature solo instruments: harp, recorder, and most prominently, violins and continuo cello. Alessandro fostered his son's talent, but the two eventually, perhaps inevitably, became rivals, and Domenico left his native Rome for Portugal and then Spain. Most of Alessandro's music recorded here is somber, solemn, and mournful, full of dissonances and sighing suspensions; four of the six concerti are in minor, but the two in major are bright and sprightly. One of the highlights is the slow, pastoral Finale of No. 6. They vary greatly in form, character, and texture; there is much masterful counterpoint, pungent rhythmic inventiveness, and a chromaticism that seems ahead of its time.

Europa Galante, an excellent Italian period-instrument group, is distinguished by its successful blending of meticulous technical and ensemble execution with musical spontaneity. Notable among the soloists are cellist Maurizio Naddeo and recorder player Petr Zeifart. Violinist Fabio Biondi, the group's director, is outstanding for his virtuosity, beautiful tone, and daring, inventive ornamentation. He deserves our gratitude for rescuing these unfamiliar works from undeserved neglect. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Music to get your teeth into.........2006-08-04

This disc is a little imposing at first, but familiarity is rewarded with this program of superb early baroque music that has a great variety of pieces.

One of the reviewers below finds it depressing. I can understand how the slow dense shifting chords in several of the pieces could evoke that feeling, but for me they seem to express some deeply felt and complex inner peace, especially as they are interspersed with some light and elegant passages, especially some that feature lute or plucked violin(?).

I guess that this isn't perhaps the easiest Biondi disc to listen to for some people (I would advise listening to a few tracks first), but Europa Gallante give a wonderful compact performance.

5 out of 5 stars Love every second of it!.......2006-07-01

This is my kind of music - rich, elegant, arrogant, polished, colourful and stylish.

Fabio Biondi and his team make the most beautiful possible in this CD and my only complaint is that the CD wasn't totally devoted to Alessandro Scarlatti - why bother with Domenico here?

The A minor concerto/sonata for recorder, two violins, violoncello & basso continuo is a highlight and exquisite piece of music.

    A "must have".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording; Historically Important.......2006-06-06

A Crisp and clear recording, and the best of the orderly, structured music of The Enlightenment in my opinion. One can hear the optimism and confidence of the time ringing thru the music of The Scarlattis. Around 1701, Domenico (b.1685 - d.1757) was named organist and composer of the vice-regal court at Naples, where his father was a respected maestro. About a year later he took a leave of absence and travelled with his family to Florence where his father, Alessandro (b. 1660 - d. 1725), hoped for employment from Pnnce Ferdinando de' Medici. Sadly, Alessandro didn't get the job, so his father canned Domenico in 1705 and sent him off to Venice to find employment. Some think that Domenico first met Handel in Venice. (The two eventually formed a strong friendship.) Domenico also spent time in Rome (where he wrote seven operas for Queen Maria Casimira) and in Portugal.

By the invention of the machine gun (esp. the Gatlin gun in 1861), things have changed in classical music, and one does not hear such calm, rational, even mathematical structures appearing as the main motiffs from composers of the day. Even earlier, however, the committment to reason was fading fast. First, in 1853, Richard Wagner publishes the librettos to Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring Cycle): Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Seigfried and Die Götterdämerung. The Ring Cycle is considered one of the most ambitious musical projects ever undertaken by a single person, and everything is now "over the top", poetic and romantic. Second, in 1860 the slave trade introduces West African rhythms, work songs, chants and spirituals to America, which strongly influence blues and jazz, and which attracts many of the best musical minds of the era.

For some time now, there has been no room for any philosopher kings in contemporary (i.e post-enlightenment) society. Given the continuing craziness of the early 21st century, don't look for any to soon arise.

5 out of 5 stars EYE OPENING .......2006-02-06

When I listen to instrumental Baroque music I, of course, go to J.S. Bach then to Tomoso Albinoni and to Antonio Vivaldi not thinking of Alessandro Scarlatti or his son Domenico for instrumental (as in string ensembles) Baroque music. I primarily think of Alessandro for vocal works and Domenico for keyboard works. This recording has certainly opened my eyes to the fact there was far more to the Scarlattis than my preconceived ideas.

Alessandro's Concerti Grossi are indeed rather somber being written mainly in minor keys and consisting of at least two slow movements. I do have a propensity for the love of works in minor keys and for movements marked "Grave", "Adagio" and/or "Largo"; therefore, I enjoyed his Concertos. (After all, there are dance movements that although they would not make one "twirl the floor" they are very graceful.) The programming on this disc is great because the aforesaid somber works by Alessandro are lightened by the Sinfonias of his son Domenico whose works are mainly in major keys and are more lively!

Fabio Biondi and the original instrumental group Europa Galante play wonderfully plus the sound of the recording is full, lush and warm.

In closing, I will still stick to Tomoso Albinoni and to Antonio Vivaldi to start my day. However, this recording of Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti is a fine way to end my day. The music is indeed beautiful!

"Concept" discs get a bad name, but here's one that works. Alessandrini has come up with the idea of recording the original Venetian concertos that served as the basis for well-known adaptations by Bach. An added twist is his orchestration of Bach's original piece for harpsichord, the Italian Concerto, in the style of the Italian masters whose works served as Bach's models. Alessandrini also supplies the missing violin solo part for Benedetto Marcello's Concerto on this disc. It all comes off so well because the works here are wonderful examples of their genre and because of the marvelous playing of the expert period instrument group, Concerto Italiano, whose playing here is beyond praise. Highlights abound: the surprising staccato movements of the Marcello Violin Concerto, the exquisite playing of oboe soloist Andrea Mion in brother Alessandro Marcello's Oboe Concerto, the zippy Vivaldi Op. 3 No. 11 Concerto for four violins, and the fantasy-filled version of Vivaldi's "La Notte" Flute Concerto among them. A disc full of endless delights. --Dan Davis

The Baroque era? Just a bunch of dead guys' dead music. It was three centuries ago, for example, that Bach transcribed some Venetian violin concertos into works for solo harpsichord. (Big deal.) But what if you reversed the process? What if you turned Bach's harpsichord piece "after the Italian taste" into a violin concerto and restored the lost violin parts of some of Bach's transcriptions? Presto, you'd have some brand-new Baroque music, thematically arranged.
Concerto Italiano and its director, Rinaldo Alessandrini, have done just that -- and created marvels. Listen for the use of staccato and silence in the two slow movements of Benedetto Marcello's second Concerti a cinque; the contrast between the serene Adagio and the festive Presto in his brother Alessandro's exquisite oboe concerto; and the second of Vivaldi's amazingly innovative flute concertos, with its creepy "Night" and hypnotic "Sleep" sections.
In 2003, Gramophone declared that Concerto Italiano's version of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons was the finest ever recorded. The pristine Naive Classique recording of Concerti Italiani will similarly raise your spirits -- along with those of a few dead guys.

5 out of 5 stars Superbly Realized Venetian Concerti Bach Had Transcribed.......2004-08-24

This is an astoundingly beautiful disc. The idea is simple, although no one had done it before: record several of the original Venetian concerti that Bach transcribed for his own use, most often for him to play at the keyboard. And then for fun: reconstruct a putative orchestral 'original' for Bach's famous solo harpsichord 'Italian Concerto,' whose original is either lost or possibly never existed; it's possible Bach simply wrote a harpsichord piece in the Italian style and called it 'Italian Concerto'. In the latter case, Rinaldo Alessandrini wrote a violin concerto based on the 'Italian Concerto,' supplying 'missing' orchestral parts. Whatever you think of the idea, it comes off beautifully. Further, Alessandrini's Concerto Italiano (how apt that this group is playing these Italian concerti!) favor us with spectacularly impeccable playing and astounding verve and energy.

There are some especially winning moments in this disc. There is the third movement (Adagio e staccato) of Benedetto Marcello's violin concerto in E minor whose staccato accompaniment limns a countermelody whose chords are played in triplicate thus: ff ppp p. What a striking and effective idea! Then one must mention oboist Andrea Mion's subtlety in Marcello's brother Alessandro's Oboe Concerto in D minor. The whole of Vivaldi's 'La Notte' 'concerto for diverse instruments' in G minor. And, finally, the tasteful reconstruction of Bach's Italian Concerto as a violin concerto, whose superimposed lines of counterpoint add, rather than subtract, from Bach's harpsichord original.

All in all, this is an extraordinarily attractive disc and I recommend it unreservedly.

This is a superb reconstruction and performance of how 6 of Weiss's lute concerti might have sounded. Richard Stone is an accomplished master of the lute as well as historically informed baroque music performance, now director of his own ensemble "Tempesta di Mare". Anyone interested in baroque lute or baroque concerti should give serious audition to this enjoyable recording.

Live performances from Edwin Fischer's final decade of concerts feature him as soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. Fischer's rare interpretive insights can best be heard in his exalted slow movement of Brahms's Sonata No. 3, earning appreciative applause from the knowledgeable audience. The set includes inevitable finger slips and wrong notes, inconsequential byproducts of his striving for artistic integrity. More important, his unerring sense of tempo conveys the heart of the music. Slow movements are soulful but liquid. Drama is always present, allied to a gorgeous tone. His reputation for seriousness doesn't prevent a romp through the Rondo of Beethoven's Concerto No. 1 or the beautifully phrased, long-breathed lyricism of the Romance movement of Mozart's 20th Concerto. Appropriately, since Fischer was an outstanding Bach interpreter, there's a lot of Bach here, including a Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 unannounced anywhere on the box, track listings, or notes. Much of the Bach on this set will sound dated and heavy to modern ears, but it's compelling nonetheless. Those who know Fischer's lofty Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 with Furtwängler (Testament) will be surprised to hear this nearly contemporaneous, swifter, and less symphonic live version with Hans Munch. It's a highlight of a set with few duds. At six discs for the price of four, and nicely packaged in a space-saving box with good notes and variable sound (mostly vintage broadcast quality), the set is a valuable tribute to a great artist. --Dan Davis

          5 out of 5 stars A great bargain-priced disc!!.......2002-02-13

Please don't be fooled by the price. Naxos and conducter Helmut Muller-Bruhl have partnered to create a beautiful disc featuring some of the best concertos composed by J. S. Bach.

Not familiar with Muller-Bruhl? I wasn't, either. But his interpretation of Bach's BWV 1044, 1057, 1063, and 1064 is simply wonderful. This recording ranks right up there with any found on Hyperion, Virgin, Sony, etc. The Naxos label isn't flashy, but this recording is fantastic. The sound quality matches the conducting, too. If you close your eyes while listening to the disc, you'd think it was a full-priced release!

So if you're unfamiliar with Bach's concertos, then this is a great place to start. And at under $8.00, it's hard to pass up. And if you already own these concertos on disc (either ADD or DDD), I still recommend that you give this Naxos release a try (if only to compare the quality of the two). True, sometimes recordings on Naxos sound generic and passionless, but not this time. Muller-Bruhl and his Cologne Chamber Orchestra shine throughout the recording, which can hold its own against any competitor still in print.

With four harpsichordists rotating to play all of Bach's extant keyboard concerti, one can be certain that the quality of each performance will be inconsistent with another. This is not to say that one performance on here is vastly superior or inferior to another; however, there are problems with this set, most of which are probably by way of after the performances--that is, by way of editting. To begin with, the very good notes contained within the set have some editting problems in themselves. But more importantly, the sound quality isn't top notched--but a lot of Vox CDs aren't known for sound quality. The triple harpsichord concerti, BWV 1064, sounds especially confusing, as though they recorded all three harpsichords on one track. The double harpsichord concerto has a minor problem where a bar in the first movement seems to be incomplete, as though the editting team had spliced some parts together and had just left out the end of the bar before the ritornello restates. Trills are also shortened there, when the score indicates otherwise. The 1056 concerto, second movement, is a bit sloppy. Notwithstanding, the 1052 concerto is thrilling, and the quadruple harpsichord concerto is considerably transparent. All in all, a set with problems, but the price is one that will compensate for the flaws.

4 out of 5 stars Una verdadera ganga........2000-06-07

          5 out of 5 stars Christmas Concertos.......2004-12-21

The Christmas concerto is an interesting subgenre of the baroque concerto grosso. Several Italian baroque composers wrote concerti designated for performance at Christmastime - this designation being by virtue of their pastoral or "musette"
movements, such music being associated with the music of the sheperds of Bethlehem. Here Il Giardino Armonico performs a batch of Christmas concertos by Corelli, Vivaldi, Gemignani, and others. Giardino's astringent tone lacks the sweetness of Europa Galante (my preferred Italian period instrument ensemble), but their interpretations are bracing, sometimes startling in their dynamic contrasts, and full of life. They are, if you will, like a severe German alterpiece rather than a sweet Italian madonna.

          5 out of 5 stars excellent performance.......2000-01-11

I really don't understand why all these good CD's are disappearing! What is Teldec thinking!

However, I believe this CD is still available now somewhere on the Internet. I got my copy from SamGoody.com (or from TowerRecords' website? I don't really remember) Good luck finding it!
