Notes, but no music.......2003-06-18

I have to give Smith credit - he's done a great job of recording much of the lesser known (or at least lesser-recorded) repertoire of the bassoon.

Unfortunately, that's about where my reccomendation ends. Smith seems to take pains to avoid phrasing, accuracy, and tasteful vibrato. His intonation is inconsistent, and his tone quality, while not completely offensive, lacks the polish and sheen found in the great artists of today.

Again, the only praise I can give to Smith is his expansion of the recorded bassoon repertoire.

Look at Judy LeClair, Bernard Garfield, David McGill, or Kristen Jensen for truly superlative playing.

I remember as a young bassoonist, many years ago, learning to play many of the Vivaldi Bassoon Concerti. Although the music was wonderful and exciting, there was a serious lack of recordings. Now, thanks to Daniel Smith one can hear the music in all its glory. Many historians wonder why Vivaldi wrote so many concertos for the bassoon, which is not often considered a solo instrument. After listening to the wonderful virtuoso performances of Daniel Smith, you will know why. He demonstrates the wonderful range, expressiveness, and versatility of the bassoon. I own all of his Vivaldi Bassoon Concerti recordings and I often play them in my office. People ask me what that instrument is and are surprised and amazed at what a bassoon can really sound like in the hands of a true master. I give these recordings 5 stars.
