5 out of 5 stars Love the soprano sax.......2007-05-18

If you don't already love the soprano sax, this should do it for you.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Musical Peformance.......2006-03-20

In my opinion, this is one of the best Classical CDs ever produced. I listen to it often and I am amazed at what an incredibly MUSICAL performance Branford Marsalis had. If you like saxaphone, I think you will love it. If you don't, I think you will still find it valuable because the technique, the phrasing are quintissential.

3 out of 5 stars Just a small point of rectifition.......2004-12-28

None of the works presented here precede the invention of the saxophone. Please look this up. You will find the saxophone invented around 1840, yes early romantic. And in addition, I believe many of the composers here used the saxophone at least once in their music. This is certainly true of Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel and Villa-Lobos. (Villa-Lobos used the saxophone in at least 40 works!)

2 out of 5 stars What am I missing?.......2003-12-19

I think it is very admirable that Marsalis has attempted to produce a classical CD, however, this is not the sublime, masterpiece that so many previous reviewers have labelled it. His tone is particularly unstable, and not very even, his soprano playing is miles better than his alto however. This is a real shame, as the primary solo instrument in the saxophone family is the alto, anyone beginning study in classical saxophone would need to get this sorted first. His tuning is barely acceptable, but only for a jazzo, he would be shot if he played so out for a real saxophone teacher. Please have a listen to some real repertoire for saxophone, played by a real player, such as Bornkamp, Rousseau, Delangle, Fourmeau, Michat, Londeix, etc. This is a good INTRODUCTION to classical music, if for the first time, but please don't accept this as being the be all and end all of classical music, and of saxophone.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!.......2003-03-17

I hae been a fan of Branford Marsalis for a while, but I had no idea that he had created a classical album. All of the songs are beautifully rendered. This CD is a treasure at any price.

5 out of 5 stars I Only Wish I Could Have Met Him.......2007-01-18

Like the title suggest, I wish I had met hime before his death in 2001. Even though this disc is of original, "poorer quality" recordings, you can still hear Mule's mastery of timbre and vibrato. You can also tell that Mule was originally a violinist from his use of vibrato. I had fellow musician listen to these recordings without telling him who it was and the instrument, and he immediately thought srings. I recently had the opportunity to met and play with Eugene Rousseau, a former student of Marcel Mule and a saxophone genius. I also have the honor of studying under a star pupil of Rousseau, Anna Marie Wytko. Rousseau discussed Mule and through these recordings and my meeting him, I understand why Marcel Mule is called "Le Patron".

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recordings of Vintage Music.......2005-01-05

This recording is fabulous. Marcel Mule's vibrato while considered outdated, is beautiful, his sound is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. Technique, intonation and articulation are some of the best ever. His playing is light and accurate. His playing reflects a sound, that should be strived for, even when playing contemporary music. When he plays fast passages, it is still musical. The recording does not leave an empty feeling of, "WOW, he played and tongued really fast!" But one of awe at his ability to control and manipulate the saxophone is to doing whatever he wants. Since all of these Mule recordings are dated between 1930 adn 1940, they were recorded on LPs, and the background noise that is heard the noise that would be heard if listenting to an original LP, it most likely hasn't been taken out to preserve the original quality of the recording to prevent the loss of certain pitches and overtones that are contained in the recording.
This Marcel Mule CD is one that should be owned by all saxophonists.

5 out of 5 stars THE essential saxophone recording........2003-07-31

I can now truly understand why Marcel Mule is considered "Le Patron" after hearing this album. On every single piece, he performs with impecible musicality: tight articulations, great breath control, nice understanding of volume, and tone and vibrato that a great violinist would kill for. Another interesting aspect is the excerpt from Francois Combelle, showing a history of how the instrument used to be played as if it were a clarinet.

Every single saxophonist should own this album, for it is a perfect example of how the saxophone is supposed to be played.

4 out of 5 stars A Foundational Recording for MOdern Saxaphone.......2003-01-27

Marcel Mule was one of the founding fathers of the "classical saxaphone." Becasue of it's youth, the saxaphone is many times disregarded as a legitimate instrument. If nothing else, Mule has gone beyond the call of duty in this wonderful cd to prove any and all of those accusations wrong.
Mule has conquered some exraordinary compositions on this recording. He has taken such a youthful instrument and has given age which in turn, encompasses the soul and feeling that classical music presents in almost any setting. For an insturment that was so scientifically crafted, Mule has given the saxaphone life and colors. His intonation is almost infallable. He has a dark, deep and rich sound that resonates on every longer tone. And his vibrato just sings as any stringed instrument would do.
While the recording is a little fuzzy, which is probably due to it's date of recording, and, or that the recording was done from a distance, and in a hall, the purchase is well worth it. To be able to hear one of the leading forerunners in this still somewhat sub-cultural group of performers is a wonderful experience. So much can be learned from this cd.

      Product Description

This CD presents premiere recordings of four works by the gifted American composer, David Liptak. Liptak's music builds large detailed structures from small and simple means. Frequently, a simple rhythmic gesture will generate an entire movement or a melodic figure will often transform itself, becoming a flower from a seed. Broken Cries was composed for the Tarab Cello Ensemble, which performs it here. The composer writes that "I imagined a kind of of music that was filled with hesitation. Pauses and silences break the flow of sounds, as a voiced cry is sometimes broken by a breath, or perhaps, a sudden thought." Liptak's stunning Ancient Songs takes most of its texts from ancient oral traditions of various cultures- the Passamaquoddy Indian tribe from Maine, the Papago Indian tribe from the southwest, the African Gabon pygmy culture, and a Scottish nursery rhyme. At the end of the cycle, a poem by the American poet James Wright provides a remarkable apotheosis.! The songs are sung with intensity by the work's dedicatee, the wonderful American baritone, William Sharp. The composition of Liptak's hauntingly beautiful Serenade was begun at the composer's summer home in Denmark, and Liptak writes that it "represents the warmth and ease of a Danish summer evening." The five extremely varied movements of this serenade run from simple and meditative to dance-like and highly energetic. The closing work is certainly this disc's simplest and most direct- a short Forlane for solo guitar. Guitarist David Starobin is the performer of this hypnotic little gem. Music of Tom Flaherty Tom Flaherty (b. 1950) Vorarlberg Resonance (1991) for two pianos, Karl and Margaret Kohn, pianos; Timeflies (1996) for guitar and cello, Peter Yates, guitar, Tom Flaherty, cello; Trio for Cello and Digital Processor (1991), Tom Flaherty, cello; Semi-Suite (1990) for solo cello, Tom Flaherty, cello; Quartet for Viola, Cello and Digital Processor (1991), Cynthia Fogg, viola, Tom Flaherty, cello; Time to Travel (1996) for two pianos, Karl and Margaret Kohn, pianos.

3 out of 5 stars Great fun EXCEPT FOR ONE THING!.......2002-07-05

What a shame! Lots of great fun pieces (mix of classical, with a few pop rag types) played very well by both saxophone and piano perfs, BUT almost all bands have CLAPPING AT END (obviously live performance)which really ruins flow of music. If they had taken the time to cut the clapping, would have rated close to 5, so, if you don't mind the short audience ends on each, you'll enjoy this cd.

After studying flute while attending DuSable High School in Chicago, Harold Jones won a scholarship to Sherwood Music School and became a member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra. He went to New York in 1955 and was awarded a scholarship to Juilliard, where he received the "Outstanding Woodwind Player" award. He continued his studies with the renowned Marcel Moyse, and in 1966 made his New York recital debut at Town Hall, later appearing at CAMI Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and Jordan Hall in Boston.

He has been soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Bach Aria Orchestra, New York Sinfonietta, American Symphony, Brooklyn Philharmonia, National Orchestral Association, Municipal Concerts Orchestra, and Symphony of the New World.
