This is music to dream by. Designed to bring out the singing quality of the cello, the program comprises folk music of many lands, art songs, arias from opera and operetta, and instrumental pieces. All of the 20 numbers except Fauré's "Sicilienne," which the composer himself transcribed for cello, are arrangements. All are slow, lyrical, similar in mood and very repetitious, both motivically and strophically. The dynamics, except for an occasional mild build-up, are subdued; every piece ends in a fade-out. Contrast is limited to instrumental colors, including electronics, and idiomatic rhythms. Julian Lloyd Webber is a fine cellist; his style and temperament seem eminently well suited to this music. His tone is beguilingly sweet and flawlessly pure, but, staying mostly in the middle range of the cello, it lacks nuance and inflection. The intensity of his vibrato varies only in one piece, where he puts swells on all the long notes: Schubert's famous "Serenade," whose simple melody hardly calls for it. He is mightily abetted by some splendid partners, most notably harpist Catrin Finch and pianist John Lenehan, both of whom made several of the arrangements. The record's title comes from the closing number, part of a piece written for the cellist by his brother, Andrew Lloyd Webber, performed here as a song. --Edith Eisler

Ultra soothing unexpected tender gems of musical beauty.......2007-05-21

The songs in this album are terrific. Nothing can be written to describe how great they are, so I suggest you listen to the samples.

I bought this album for my father's birthday and he tells me that he has to listen to it every single night to go to sleep.

What initially drew me to this album was a remake of "A Gift of Thistle" from the Braveheart soundtrack by James Horner. If you know that piece, listen to Webber's clip and you'll see how this arrangement flows so nicely and succeeds in accentuating the strengths of the piece. I usually don't like remakes of originals but this one is an exception.

All songs are acoustic except the title track "Unexpected Song".

Total of 20 tracks, well worth it.

Outstanding Collection With Exquisite Vocals.......2005-09-18

I could not agree more with the review written by Frank T. Manheim. All I would add to his comments are that the recording quality is excellent, and that there are, amongst all of the wonderful selections on this CD, two vocal selections that I found deeply moving. On the first CD, there is a powerful, yet at the same time delicate performance of Vivaldi's In Nisi Dominus, by Andreas Scholl. I had never heard this selection of Vivaldi before buying this CD and don't have other performances to compare it to, but Scholl's performance was so moving, as was the accompaniment of the musical instruments on this track, that I listened to it several times in a row. I did the same with Janet Baker's performance of Dido's Lament, by Henry Purcell, on the second CD of this 2 CD set, listening to her haunting passionate voice over and over again. As with Vivaldi's In Nisi Dominus, I had never heard this composition, nor in fact any composition by Henry Purcell before buying this CD. The emotional depth and intensity that Janet Baker brings to her performance is very deeply moving. This is, fittingly, the last track on CD 2, ending this collection on a musical and emotional level, or rather, summit, that will leave you with eyes closed, thinking of the stars. As a result of having heard Janet Baker's performance on this compilation, I bought the full recording of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. In fact, I bought several CDs of music by Henry Purcell after hearing Dido's Lament.

As Frank Manheim writes in his review, this CD can either be put on as background music, or it can be listened to intently, savoring every note. Although the title of this CD set has the work "Adagios" in it, this is no mere easy listening experience. There is plenty of musical passion on both CDs. This is a wonderful 2 CD set. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in classical, and especially, Baroque music.

Why is this beautiful set so low in Amazon sales? .......2005-09-15

While classical music is achieving a resurgence in the UK and Finland, in the U.S. the meager proportion of classical music among record store and department offerings still reflects classical's waning status. What we do find even in drugstores and supermarkets is inexpensive "mood" collections like "Romance", "Spring", "Melancholy", etc. I have no problem with this - some of the unnamed orchestras or soloists aren't bad although recording quality may disappoint.

"Baroque Adagios" is a big cut higher for both enjoyable listening, as well as background music for social occasions. The Baroque period simply overflows with memorable slow movement gems - both well-known, and rarely heard. The famous Italian tenor, Beniamino Gigli, confessed that many of his most favorite pieces came from the Italian baroque and earlier. Music of the earlier times combines emotional and melodic appeal with a restraint and depth that makes it wear well on many hearings. The only risk for background music is that the gorgeous melodies and resonant sonorities will draw people away from what they might otherwise do.

The choice of repertory is rich and varied, but this collection is particularly noteworthy for its long list of famous soloists and conductors. Besides Janos Starker, these include Heinz Holliger, Andras Schiff, Henryk Szeryng (in the Bach Double Concerto in D minor), Thurston Dart, Enrique Fernandez, Christopher Hogwood, Karl Munchinger, Neville Marriner, and many others.

I can think of few ways to better dissolve stress than to put this recording on a player and relax into a comfortable easy chair - or or put it into a car CD player on a longer trip. It makes a thoughtful present for both knowledgeable classic buffs and newcomers to classical music.

Yet More Wonderful English String Orchestra Music.......2006-09-26

In a review of a previous issue in this ongoing series of releases from Naxos of 'English String Miniatures' -- this one is Vol. 6 -- I wrote, "If there was ever any doubt that the English have been masters of writing for the string orchestra, there shouldn't be any now." I can't think of another nation's composers who have done so much for the genre.

In this CD we get music of Holst, Purcell, Peter Warlock, William Lloyd Webber, Paul Lewis (b.1943), Adam Carse (1878-1958), Paul Carr (b.1961), Lionel Sainsbury (b.1958) and Malcolm Lipkin (b.1932). And a wonderful lot it is. Probably the most familiar work here is Purcell's 'Chacony in G Minor' in its arrangement for strings by Benjamin Britten. It is essentially a passacaglia on an interesting and relatively complex ground bass. Why oh why don't we more often hear this one in place of the ubiquitous (misnamed) Canon of Pachelbel? The Royal Ballet Sinfonia (of Birmingham) under Gavin Sutherland play with crisp, clean articulation combined with suavely lush string sound, as in all the other works presented here. Lovely.

Holst is represented by his 'A Moorside Suite', a three-movement work arranged by Philip Lane (who also arranged Warlock's 'Bethlehem Down.') It is typical modal Holst with catchy rhythms and tunes. Adam Carse is best known for his pedagogical works for young string players but his 'Winton Suite' is for grown-ups. It is a collection of five pieces -- Prelude, Air, Dance, Song, Finale -- which are in a modernized baroque style. 'Song', a kind of concertante for violin, cello and strings, is utterly lovely. Warlock's Christmas carol, 'Bethlehem Down' (1927) is presented here in Philip Lane's more or less straight arrangement. Lovely legato playing throughout; this Royal Ballet Sinfonia is good!

Carr has primarily been a composer for television. His 'A Very English Music' (2002), a 'paean to the English countryside' has three movements: Cuckmere Haven, Cornish Air, and The Hunt Gathering. The latter portrays a Yorkshire Boxing Day hunt 'with supporters, protesters, huntsmen and maybe even the old fox.' There couldn't be a more contemporary comment on English country life than that! William Lloyd Webber, probably best known for his two musical sons, was primarily a composer of church music but he also wrote a fair amount of concert music. His 'Waltz in E Minor' (1939) is a graceful four-minute work that conjures up dancers in formal attire gliding across the floor. Not Viennese, not rustic -- very sophisticated harmonies, much use of divisi strings, and a slightly melancholic undertone.

Sainsbury's 'Two Nocturnes' (1990) are darkly dramatic, the first anguished chromaticism, the second tentative lyricism. Lipkin's 'From Across La Manche' is three movements and uses a somewhat astringent harmonic language. 'Overture' is jaunty and forcefully rhythmic. 'Ballade' is introspective, hushed but reaching a climax before falling back into a musing mood. 'Dance-finale' takes a measure from Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' (which I would not have recognized except for its being pointed out in the excellent notes by Philip Lane) that happens to have a mazurka rhythm and Lipkin uses it as the guiding principle of the entire piece.

Once again, as in Volume 5 of this series, Sutherland and his Birmingham group prove themselves excellent proponents of this so-very-English string music. Recommended.

Very Nice.......2006-08-12

I must say I enjoyed pretty much all of the songs on this album. "Victory" by Bond was the only thing they shouldn't have included, since it doesn't quite qualify as "classical" and wasn't what I would call a hit, anyway. True, it was instrumental, but real classical music is of a higher caliber. ("Now We Are Free" isn't quite classical either but it's not 'commercialized' like "Victory.") I really liked "Duel of the Fates," "Maria," "Now We Are Free," and "O Fortuna." Those were my favorites out of a great selection of songs. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't really care for full-blown classical.

I bought this cd when it first came out, as my first real taste of anything even remotely classical. And for that purpose, it works. For someone getting into classical seriously though, I'd start somewhere else.

Almost perfect..........2005-09-17

aside from the second track (Bond-Victory) and the title track from the movie Braveheart, this is a decent classical album. The Bond-Victory selection is embarrassing commercial crap.

This is a perfect album for someone who doesn't like classical music. It's almost like classical crib notes. The mix is great for dinner or party music but I was left wanting more. I'm not sure of it, but it felt like each song was shortened some how.

Almost Perfect!!!!.......2002-01-17

This album contains many of contemporary classic music's finest songs sung by many of the finest singers in the world. Bocelli, Brightman, Fleming, Watson, just to name a few. The problem here is with the opener, where the song is sung by the execrable Charlotte Church. Its a mystery to everyone I know who has heard this CD why this song is not sung by Sarah Brightman who did the original and defining version. The rendition by Church simply demonstrates her lack of vocal control and emotion. Even a cover by Renee Fleming is far superior to that of Church's. The only thing I can think of here is that since the album is put out by Sony, and Charlotte is owned by Sony, they had to find some place for her songs after paying her so much money.
If not for Church poisoning the well on track 1, this album is an absolute 5-star

I have two of these cd's. My kids are 2 and 4 and I bought the first cd when my daughter was a newborn. These have been a true blessing and most evenings, put ME to sleep along with my daughter as I'm getting her settled and to sleep. SOO soothing and relaxing.......just beautiful. The original cd had gotten a scratch on one song so I'm here on Amazon trying to buy yet another one. Great just to play when the kids are wound up just to sooth them.

A Real Snooze..........2002-10-24

This compilation of songs is most restful for both the young and old. I received this CD as a gift years before the birth of my daughter and I used it's calming effect while studying calculus.

While working in a daycare this CD had twenty 3-5 year old children fast asleep within minutes. Very cool!

I just purchased a new copy of this CD as the old one is scratched and worn out. I now look forward to sharing this soothing music with my newborn baby girl. ****I highly recommend this CD for putting your little one to sleep.****

WONDERFUL - if only it was available.......2002-08-19

As a highly active amateur cellist, this is my signature baby gift to all friends and family - all have commented at it's soothing effect when played at naptime or bedtime. This is a wonderful collection, well-played - BUT IT'S NEVER AVAILABLE. I'm now on a constant search to find used copies. I can only hope that they get back on the ball and restart production on this CD - so that all of you can enjoy it!!

This CD is made up of instrumental cello renditions of popular lullabyes.

My wife and I have given several of these CD's to parents of young children in the US and abroad. Without exception, the soothing cello tunes help mother and child alike to relax at the end of a busy day.

Webber performs sensitive interpretations of these long-beloved classics, including Braham's Lullabye and Rock a Bye Baby. The cuts provide wonderful comfort to a stressed world. My wife and I listen happily while reading and sitting in front of the crackling fire.

We love this album and are ordering 6 so we have some on hand for gifts to new mothers.

Julian Webber performs masterfully in this relaxing collection of peaceful lullabies. His technique is superb, and this CD will leave you snoring soundly if you play it at night, like I do.

Aurora classical Variations.......2005-09-26

Sooner or later there would be an orchestral version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Variations which he composed for his brother Julian and various rock musicians. You must be a die-hard fan to get this version as it is a solely classical arrangement for cello and orchestra. Coupled with their father's symphonic tone-poem "Aurora" it is a lovely and warm disc. The arrangement for the orchestra is well done.Tone colours off course now vary from the various electric instruments used in the original and that's why it only gets 4 stars.The concept behind the original variations was for cello with rock band and the spontanaity of the first disc is somewhat lost. However it is still and excellent recording and should boost the repertoire for solo cello and orchestra much.
