Fine Mozart at a Bargain Price.......2007-04-06
I have no hesitation in giving five stars, there might be a better version available, but it will cost at least twice as much.
Mozart with a heart.......2006-05-20
Look at what everyone else thinks! This is exceptionially beautiful music played with heart and soul. There are so many performances of Mozart's chamber music that to these untrained ears just sound dull, thin-lipped and polite - for a long time I found much of Mozart's music rather superficial - very clever and witty - but ultimately superficial - I could fully understand why Glenn Gould recorded his sonatas just to show how overrated he had become!
Listening to the Beaux Arts Trio, all is forgiven. I can hear all instruments perfectly equally; the pacing is spot on and somehow the performance brings out a profundity in Mozart's chamber music I was unable to hear before.
Having said all this I would of course love to hear the other Phillips recording that is meant to be so definitive.
Unbalanced, sloppy and poor intonation at a good price.......2006-02-22
First, the balance seems to be biased towards the violin / clarinet. Daniel Guilet is often criticized for milking the music too much, and it is no exception here, and this, imho, is a severe flaw when interpreting Mozart. His style is also inconsistent. For example, his Mozart spiccato at pianissimos becomes sloppy detaches that are way too long at fortes. Menahem Pressler sounds like he's playing with the soft pedal and the lid down. At times Mozart's clever left hand counterpoint is lost in the background. In the Clarinet Trio, the viola is often lost behind the clarinet. Overall, the intonation is not very good, especially in the awkward passages, like in the E major Trio. (Both Guilet and Greenhouse have issues tuning against the piano... perhaps because the lid was down?)
I give two stars because it could be even worse. My expectations compare to the excellent (especially in comparison) interpretation by Ingred Haebler of the Mozart Piano Quartets (released by Philips). There the exacting intonation and precociousness of Mozart shines. With these recordings I feel like I'm listening to a sight-reading through the wall, closest to the violinist/clarinet player.
Elegance.......2005-06-23
BEAUX ARTS' MOZART MAKES THIS KITTY PURR!!! (SNOOKIE).......2003-05-06
The Beaux Arts Trio is just wonderful in this literature. Menahem Pressler's dynamic shading, articulation, and interactions with the other instruments are always "just right".
The sound of the recording itself is fine. Even though it was recorded in 1967, it was digitally remastered to cd.
I highly recommend this set. The Beaux Arts has been around for over 40 years. As a result, they have a lot of experience playing with each other, and it shows in this masterful compilation.

Surprisingly, this seems to be the only coupling of the three most popular Clarinet Trios in the repertoire. The all-star ensemble, all musicians who have frequently performed together, turns out extremely fine performances of all three works. If the Brahms seems like the most thoroughly understood, in its combination of warmth and impulse, the other two works are nearly as fine. Very good sound, resonant and very well balanced, completes a total winner of a disc. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Perfect together.......2007-07-14
But this Sony Classical CD isn't an instance of the "usual" such affairs. Rather the performances of the 18th Century Mozart and Beethoven and 19th Century Brahms trios were recorded at a concert series at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston from June 27 to June 29, 1993.
I'd love to have listened live. But hearing a CD of these three master musicians--Emmanuel Ax (piano) Richard Stoltzman (clarinet) and Yo Yo Ma (cello)--is a very fine substitute.
I don't understand the supposed few flaws others hear in these performances. All three pieces make wonderful chamber music, and both the works and the musicians are perfect together.
Maybe musicians are usually good critics, but concerning this CD, the plain old-fashioned music listeners call it best. Count me a simple music-listener--and a fan of this CD.
Stoltzman? more like Sucksman.......2007-03-18
The biggest and most readily apparent problem is Stoltzman's clarinet playing. He seems to have become so convinced of his own brilliance as a musician that he's thrown restraint to the wind. He plays so aggressively in some sections and his tone is so shrill that I occasionally cringe to listen to it. Or, I should say, I *used* to cringe, because I sold this CD back to the store today.
As for Ax and Ma, while their playing is decent, they seem to have become infected by Stoltzman's rambunctiousness and at times the whole thing sounds like a three-way ego contest. There are much better recordings of these pieces available.
(Apparently, this recording won the 1996 Grammy for best chamber performance. Just goes to show that the Grammys have a lot more to do with whose name is on the cover than what's actually on the record.)
Camaraderie: Ax/Stoltzman/Ma Finesse the Masters.......2005-08-15
While most people will find the Brahms trio (opus 114) the most fully realized of the three, on this recording the Beethoven trio #4 (opus 11) is the most illuminating performance of the three. The phrasing is crisp, with one instrument taking up the leading melody and passing it graciously to the other instruments. It is a cohesive work, splendidly played. Our triad of great musicians obviously enjoys every moment of bringing this wonderful work to life. That is not to say that the Mozart trio (K 498) is not superb - it is just that this work is played so often that familiarity results in less attention to the performance.
This recording is highly recommended not only for those multitudes of fans of these three extraordinary musicians (and friends!), but also for lovers of chamber music of all forms. Grady Harp, August 05
Mostly beautiful, with some so so moments.......2004-07-29
I find that Stoltzman excels on the more delicate music, and accordingly the Mozart Trio and slower movements of the Brahms are absolutely beautiful.
Because of the few flaws (plus the fact that some pieces are transcribed from trios originally featuring viola), this CD shouldn't be your standard versions of these pieces, but this CD certainly makes an interesting and fun addition to CD collection.
Disappointing performances by truly great performers.......2003-11-25
Additionally, these recordings were seriously marred by Stoltzman's performance. While it is true that Muhlfeld, the clarinettist for whom the Brams Trio was written, did use vibrato, it's unlikely that he played with the Glen Miller sound. Stoltzman's awful tone is hugely responsible for my distaste for this recording.
I don't particularly care for the Beethoven or Mozart trios, but they were better executed than the Brahms. The Brahms is a much more sophisticated piece than the other trios, and it deserves a much better treatment than the one afforded here.
It's truly unfortunate that these three great performers did not put together an equally great performance.

Customer Reviews:
A long overdue collection by one of the English masters of the clarinet........2007-01-05
However these recordings originally came out a very long time ago in the early days of vinyl, and a re-issue is long overdue. Kell's excursion in to light music is interesting, though he stops well short of anything resembling jazz, although he had earlier recorded one record with Bert Ambrose's band in the 1940 which was the nearest he got, - but that is not included here. His main forte is in the works of Mozart, Weber, Beethoven and Brahms, but he also plays Bartok and Templeton. It shows what an accomplished performer he was. All were recorded after he left the UK to live and play in America.
This set shows his rightful place as a performer in the history of clarinet playing. He had raised the standard of the time, and had the benefits of improved recording techniques and length of play boudaries were removed with the LP record.

Two of Music's Earliest and Greatest Chamber Masterworks with Clarinet.......2006-09-05
*'Kegelstatt' is German for 'skittles,' an early form of bowling. Legend has it that Mozart composed the Trio during a game of skittles.
The performances here are, to quote Linda Richman, 'like buttah.' I honestly cannot think of a single criticism of the level of playing here, either technically, sonically or, most important, musically. The Quatuor Mosaïques has recorded all of Mozart's string quartets in a universally acclaimed set and they obviously have his style in their bones.
A striking feature in the Quintet is that it can sometimes seem to be a double concerto for violin and clarinet with string accompaniment, and to take advantage of that the stereo soundstage places the first violin predominantly in the left channel, the clarinet in the right. This is a very nice effect sonically.
Fun fact: it was the Clarinet Quintet that Major Charles Emerson Winchester taught the Chinese prisoners of war to play in an episode of M*A*S*H. I've actually had someone tell me that they were 'turned on to classical music' by that episode. (Winchester also mauled the opening measures of the Ravel Left Hand Piano Concerto in another episode. I doubt that converted anyone!)
I believe these excellent 1993 performance were previously released on Auvidis but it appears to be no longer available and I'm glad Naïve has made it available again. Note that the CD comes at what appears these days to be mid-price.
