5 out of 5 stars Wonderful French Ambiance.......2003-07-14

Most of the music on this disk was unknown to me, but I was glad to make its acquaintance. The performances are crisp, clean, clear and elegant; in a word, French. Having recently been in Paris I could safely make the connection to the place with this music instantly.

3 out of 5 stars Poulence and Milhaud shine, but the rest can be samey........2001-02-08

Pahud perhaps errs in beginning his disc with by far its strongest piece, Poulenc's joyously melodic 'Flute Sonata', serenely playful, influenced by Stravinsky's neo-classicism, but spiritually just as close to Mozart. The only other work here that compares is Poulenc's old 'Les Six' chum Milhaud's 'Sonatina', which has a rhythmic energy and strangeness that marks it out from its rather fey surroundings.

Three of the works are Conservatoire test pieces, and they show, Dutilleux's and Sancan's being pleasant, but samey variations on Debussy and Faure. Ibert's contributions are more original, but just as amiably forgettable. Messian's replication of bird-song, 'Le Merle Noir', is evocative and exciting, but fatiguing; Jolivet's closer just fatigues. Pahud's playing is flexible and expressive throughout, and Le Sage's quiet invention on the piano shouldn't be ignored, but this disc really only sparkles on first hearing.

4 out of 5 stars french flute power.......2000-09-20

Pahud has become one of the biggest flutist around the world these days. His selections on this all-French composer disc span the gamut of the French repertory from the Ibert to the still living Dutilleux. I got this disc for two reasons 1) because there aren't too many recordings of the Dutilleux Sonatine--a contemporary flute and piano piece {The two which spring to my mind are Paula Robison and Michael Bellavance 's but there are probably 1 or 2 more out there} and 2)i was curious about Pahud's mysterious sound. Many flutist friends had told me I HAD to hear a recording of his. Let me say that it takes a lot to impress me after getting used to hearing the flute squad of the Boston Symphony--wood flute pioneer Jacques Zoon, Fenwick Smith and Elizabeth Ostling, but this Pahud's sound IS all that AND a bag of potato chips. This collection although almost exclusively from the 20th century is quite accessible, lyric (in the French style), even the 'bird' calls in Messiaen's 'Le Merle Noir' don't even come close to other ear-challenging 20th century repertory. The disc is a great sampler of the 'greatest flute hits/repertory' of the 20th century (excluding the solo flute pieces-Debussy's Syrinx or Varese's Density 21.5).

That said I have 2 cents more to add to my review of the Dutilleux Sonatine. Although I like this disc a lot, I LOVE Paula Robison's Recording of it even more (if that is possible). IT IS probably the DEFINITIVE recording of that piece. Check out her CD on the Vanguard label which has a smattering of 19th and 20th century works on it.

5 out of 5 stars Pahud is by far one of the absolute best flutists right now!.......1999-02-03

After attending a masterclass with Emmanuel Pahud, I bought this recording, and as he demonstrated in the classes, he is a phenomenal all-around performer. If you ever have a chance to see him live, definitely go for it. Otherwise, get a recording... or two!

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2005-09-08

I am typically not a fan of Jean Pierre's flute playing (I find his tone to be thin and his technical passages to be a bit sloppy). With that said I was very surprised to actually like this CD. This collection is full of great pieces. Like everyone else reviewing I love the Katchaturian Concerto and having played it myself, I can tell you that it is one tough piece. I also adore the last movement of the Ibert concerto. The sonatas in this collection are also great and very well known pieces. This CD collection is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars The Best 20th Master pieces.......2004-04-03

Your attention is drawn to the fact that in one CD we have concertos and on the other one are sonatas, totalling 2 hrs 10 minutes.

the two French orchestras are superb and the recording is very nice too. Somehow, the recording of the piano part of the sonatas is not equally nice and the pianist is not quite as impressing as the flutist. Furthermore, its up to the audience to judge whether Rampal had slightest past his very prime when he recorded these two records albeit that technically there isn't any sign of obvious aging.

I'm no flutist but my attention is not just attracted by the Khatchatourian concerto: they are more jems than you could possibly imagine. In case you want to have the fullest reportoire of modern composers played by the greatest artist, you definitely shouldn't miss them.

5 out of 5 stars Super Collection of 20th C. Flute Reportoire.......2003-01-09

Here is the collection of 20th century flute reportoire, played by master Rampal.

Ibert, Jolivert, Poulenc, are all here in two disc set with Rampal accompanied by Robert Veyron-Lacroix on piano.

Recording is clear and play is spectacular. Flute lovers will definitely want this in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for the serious Flutist or 20th Century collectr.......2001-03-10

As a flutist I say that this CD is a must have for any aspiring flutist. It contains THE piece de resistance of the flute repertoire and the performance is simply legendary. Most of these pieces were dedicated to or commissioned by Rampal himself.

For the average collector, you will just adore the Khatchaturian concerto. See why the first movement is so compelling that all over the world audiences could not stop clapping even just after the first movement.

5 out of 5 stars fun trumpets.......2005-09-13

"Masters of The Trumpet" is a simple and accurate title for this 2- disc collection. The recordings cover trumpet/cornet literature ranging from Gabrieli to Stravinsky.
Especially enjoyable moments are Don Smithers playing Reiche's "Abblasen" & Armando Ghitalla's work on Stravinsky's "Marche Royale" (L'Histoire du Soldat).
Rafael Mendez sounds as though he has more fun playing than should be legal...exciting!..and Adolph Herseth is a pleasure to hear whether he's playing in "delicate mode" or shattering asteroids with his power.

5 out of 5 stars French Flute Music Ranging from Sweet to Avant-Garde.......2005-04-08

Patrick Gallois is surely one of the most illustrious French flutists in the post-Rampal generation. He's done some outstanding work on the Naxos label in the past and this new one is excellent as well. He is partnered by a Canadian pianist new to me, Lydia Wong, and she, too, is an excellent collaborator. This CD starts out with the many-times-recorded Poulenc Flute Sonata, surely one of the great pieces in the flute/piano literature, and Gallois plays the bejabbers out of it. He not only commands the sweet tones required for the first two movements, but he plays the Presto giocoso movement faster than I've ever heard it and with what sounds like superhuman articulation: I cannot imagine how anyone can play so many staccato notes so fast. It does not sound rushed, but rather simply exuberantly alive.

The other pieces include the Messiaen 'Le Merle noir,' the Sonatine by Pierre Sancan, Jolivet's 'Chant de Linos,' Sonatines by both Dutilleux and Boulez. I recall hearing the latter years ago and finding it ugly. I suppose I've come some distance in the intervening time because this time it doesn't sound ugly, although I must confess I still can't make much sense of it. I went through a time of trying to understand Boulez's music by studying some scores, and finally gave it up as beyond me. My deficiency, I'm sure, but there you are. One can say, however, that Gallois and Wong make a good case for it without convincing this particular jury. On the other hand, I've grown more and more fond of Messiaen's music over the years--his piano music has made a real believer of me, particularly in some recent recordings by Hakon Austbo ('Petites esquisses d'oiseaux/Catalogue d'oiseaux' et al.) and Pierre-Laurent Aimard ('Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus')--and this performance of 'The Blackbird' builds on that admiration. This is not only gorgeous music, it is gorgeously played, with real feeling for the birdcalls. The fast section toward the end is really exciting.

I don't recall ever seeing the name, much less hearing any of the music, of Pierre Sancan (b. 1916). He was for many years a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. The music is rather more impressionistic than anything else here, very reminiscent of the flute writing of Debussy. Jolivet's 'Chant de Linos' is a threnody that attempts to recall funerary gestures of ancient Greece. Jolivet's style is more disjunct than Poulenc's or Sancan's and seems to alternate between songful and dancing sections. It does indeed evoke ancient times although I can't quite put my finger on how Jolivet accomplishes this. That said, it did not stick with my aural memory for very long; each time I listened to it seemed to be the first time.

Dutilleux is another fairly recent discovery of mine, perhaps in the past ten years, and I am happy to label him as a great composer. Some of his orchestral works--e.g., 'Métaboles,' 'Tout un Monde lontain,' the Cello Concerto--are truly masterpieces. The Flute Sonatine, less than ten minutes long, was written in 1942 as a test piece for the Conservatoire, is rather more clearly impressionistic than his later music, but the limpid melodies and evanescent atmosphere so characteristic of his later works, is already present. I'd not heard this work before but found myself returning to it repeatedly. There is a calming effect, always, for me in his music, no matter how dramatic it becomes, and that is true for the Sonatine as well. I think that is because Dutilleux is, to use a psychological term, constantly centered, constantly at peace with himself and the world. At least that how it sounds to me.

With the exception of the Boulez, which I didn't hate but also didn't 'get', this is an exceptionally beautiful disc. And even with the Boulez the playing is beautiful. I really don't think anyone interested in this corner of the chamber music literature would go wrong to acquire the disc, and the superbudget Naxos price makes that painless.

5 out of 5 stars The epitome of French Saxophone.......2000-04-29

This is a very excellent recording of the standards in the French Repertoire. The pieces are executed flawlessly, with the usual French style of fast vibrato and certain ornamentations. Great recording for students and teachers trying to put together pieces for recitals, and Tableaux de Provence is often a standard for college auditions.

Savijoki and the pianists work well together, and this cd should be a standard in every classical saxophone collection.

5 out of 5 stars very virtuosic.......2003-11-22

The pieces on this cd are very difficult to perform & on this cd are performed so perfectly. A great collection of 20th century music.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2001-08-28

Paul Meyer plays incredibly here. I can't imagine why anyone would be disappointed with his sound. No, it's not the French sound of 40 years ago, but it's a beautiful, flexible sound that works beautifully in these pieces. The pieces on the cd are some of the high points in clarinet literature in the twentieth century. The Berio Sequenza especially is an incredible piece of music for the clarinet. Anyone interested in the clarinet should have this cd.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SWEET FRENCH EMBOUCHURE?.......2000-10-22

As Ignatius Gennusa use to tell me, "anyone can blow into a clarinet and push buttons; very few people these days seem to care about a beautiful tone such as Ralph McLane's, however".

And I say Mr Gennusa would find this clarinetist's sound rather painful; I unquestionably do. And, thus, herein the tone quality cries out as the major dissapointment with this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Paul Meyer: 20th Century Music for Unaccompanied Clarinet.......2000-08-25

As usual, I am quite impressed by the performance by Paul Meyer. Although he sometimes plays pieces a little on the fast side, his interpretations were in good taste. I was a little surprsied by his tone in the Stravinsky 3 pieces. Of the CD's I own performed by him, I always thought his tone had focus and a rich tone, but this selection on the CD wasn't quite what I was familiar with in his playing. However, a wonderful performance of Andre Jolivet's "Asceses pour clarinette". How often do I hear clarinet players struggle with multiphonics and just contemporary works in general. I would recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2006-05-25

This is purely a disc of well-trodden paths in the flute world. All of the pieces here are often competition pieces. Just about every major flutist records these works sooner or later. But flutist Bezaly and pianist Brautigam's interpretations are different from the rest, and better than most. You might say that's somewhat of a tall order - How can this lesser-known newcomer joust with the starry likenesses of Galway, Rampal, and Pahud? I will tell you: by simple good stylistic taste - and by utterly peerless chops. Oh sure, you might say, I've heard Pahud and the rest of them - they all play the notes right as well. Well, not the way Bezaly plays them. The flute, which is the barrier between her expression and the audience, disappears; her music emerges like a voice. The complex and tricky lines of the Prokofiev sonata show no signs of constraint; the technically monstrous Chant de Linos seems effortless. The only well-known modern player who has a technique even close to Bezaly's is Pahud, and he is diligently dull in style and tone color. Not so with Bezaly. She inherited a good deal of fine musical taste from her teacher Nicolet and her tone has the variety of a jewel turning within a ray of light. She is subtle and elegant but she always pushes the music forward. Also as a team player she is magnificent: She matches Brautigam and blends well with him, which is such a rare thing in solo virtuoso performance. Overall, it may be true that players like Galway and Rampal deliver more fiery and downright operatic performances of these pieces (which are perhaps more satisfying in the end), but no one ever played them with more technical freedom or civilized elegance than Sharon Bezaly. She really is God's gift to the flute.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Flute Passion CD.......2004-08-08

I came across this CD while looking for recordings of music that I could play to Flute Students. This CD is a winner, as it contains music at the Grade -7 level (Australia) and makes a wonderful purchase for both teachers and students. The various artists represented on the CD's are amongst the best flautists in the world. An excellent choice for anyone passionate about the flute.

      Product Description

French Trumpet Concertos. John Holt Trumpet with the Slovak Radio Orchestra, Kirk Trevor, Conductor. Henri Tomasi, Concerto pour Trompette et Orchestre; Robert Planel, Concerto pour Trompette et Orchestre a cordes; Andre Jolivet, IIe Concerto pour Trompette; and Alfred Desenclos, Incantation, Threne et Danse. John Holt is principal trumpet with the Dallas Opera Orchestra and trumpet professor at the University of North Texas. His first four CDs on Crystal received unanimous acclaim, with Gramophone Magazine describing him as an elegant, sensitive artist. The four concertos herein are a feast for the sensibilities: lyrical or dramatically expressive; rhythmically or harmonically nodding to the popularity of jazz; reflective of modern chamber music and symphonic music first heard in Paris in the 1920s; or expressing new ideologies.
