A Viola Master In His Prime.......2005-05-01

William Primrose (1904-1982) was arguably the greatest of all violists. These recordings demonstrate that his virtuosity went hand in hand with supreme musicianship. The major items here are the two Brahms Sonatas, originally written for clarinet but later arranged by the composer for viola and piano. #1 (recorded 1946) is with pianist William Kapell, while #2 (recorded 1937) is with Gerald Moore. The transfers here are superior to Pearl's (both sonatas) and RCA's Kapell Edition (#1 only). I prefer these bolder performances to Primrose's later accounts with Rudolf Firkusny (Angel).

In #1 the tragically short-lived Kapell is a superb partner in a reading that is more dynamic and dramatic than any other I've heard. The sound here is warm and full. Moore is a fine accompanist in #2, which suffers a bit from its older sound.

The Boccherini Sonata #6 (1939, with Joseph Kahn) is a lovely work, and it's performed with great sensitivity and noble tone. The four encore items (from wartime Armed forces radio broadcasts) are delightful: a dazzling Paganini Caprice, Kreisler's Policinelle, an arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile, and a gorgeously schmalzy rendition of Foster's "I dream of Jeannie with the light-brown hair."

I'm keeping this CD and weeding my other versions.

Heartrending.......2004-03-27

As a player and passionate fan of the viola, I can personally say that these are the most gorgeous pieces for solo viola I've heard. Wiliam Primrose is the king of the viola- his instrument sings like only a viola can on these recordings. If you love the rich, mellow sound of a viola, or are wondering what on earth a viola is, I highly recommend this recording. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

Disappointed...Performances don't plumb the depths.......2006-07-22

Some of Mozart's greatest, most profound, most personal writing was for string quintet (just as Beethoven's was for string quartet). Mozart poured his demonic frustration into pieces such as K. 406 and K. 516. The former is almost Beethovenian. The latter is a unique personal swirl of light and darkness, the likes of which he never wrote again. This is essential and special Mozart.

Unfortunately, I can't see I consider these essential and special recordings. In too many of these performances the musicians don't quite give their all. There's nothing outwardly *wrong* with the efforts here, but I've heard better by the Alban Bergs (yes, that's not a typo) and the Melos Quartet, to name just two. Here, I felt the performers didn't take the music as far as it could go, while still remaining true to its classical (or quasi-classical, for these are some of Mozart's most modern and forward-looking creations) nature. Tempi are rather middle-of-the-road. Angles are smoothed over. The five musicians play without a lot of individual personality, but they don't blend with the steely polish of the Bergs either. They indistinctly play very distinctive works.

For K. 516, the best performance I've yet heard was at a live concert at the Mirabel Palace in Salzburg, by the "house band"! They may not have been famous names, but they convinced me with a well-considered interpretations that was lean and brisk and yet had plenty of attention to nuance. They pointed out dips and shapes in the flow of the work that here is just glossed over. Based on just this recording, I had thought I wouldn't like this quintet. Silly me.

I don't have a complete set to recommend in lieu of this one, but the Amadeus Quartet with Cecil Aronowitz on DG is probably worth a listen and the team of Georges Janzer, Max Lesueur, Arpad Gerecz, Arthur Grumiaux and Eva Czako on Philips sounds promising. I'll have to get to them at some point and report back.

THE Violinist.......2006-02-24

There is no one like Kreisler-perfect intonation and just beautiful sound from that instrument are his, without being mawkish or sentimental in his playing.

I prefer other composers' music, but he is a master on anything. To hear what a violin should sound like, listen to Kreisler!

Fritz Kreisler, the King of Violinists.......2003-11-14

Fritz Kreisler was definitly one of the most recognized and best violin player of all times,after Jascha Heifetz. Besides being well known by his compositions, he was a violin virtuoso.His great sense of melodie, made him compose and make wonderful arrangments, with a great importance for the violin repertoire. The sound of his playing in unmistakable, and has a very particular way to play his musics, like for example, the beautiful Schön Rosmarin, where the first notes, make so easy to recognize the Kreisler's playing. I recommend this CD to every violinists and specially to those that want to hear a Master of the Violin playing. Just great !

Kreisler was the one of greatest of his generation of violinists. This collection highlights his own compositions and transcriptions, and is a wonderful example of his playing style--very polished, refined, with a touch of humor when needed. A great disc, and a worthy addition to your collection, especially if you like historic recordings.

Fritz Kreisler is great!.......1999-07-21

I heard Tamborine Chinois on the Prairie Home Companion in their Towns Under 2000 Talent contest and really liked it. My son then started learning some other Kreisler songs and so I thought it would be great to hear the Master play his own music and I wasn't disappointed. My only regret is that I didn't get to hear Leibesleid years ago otherwise I would have studied violin over string bass.

The Primrose Piano Quartet is named in honor of William Primrose (1904-1982), one of the finest violists of the 20th century, and his piano quartet, the Festival Quartet. Its members have shared the concert platform on many occasions at international festivals, recording sessions and London's premier concert halls. They offer a range of attractively varied programs, including duo sonatas and string trios. They have been selected for the Making Music Concert Promoters' Network Tours for 2005/2006.

This unique disc offers chamber music by four important British composers of the earlier 20th century. Although Arnold Bax is fairly well known outside of Britain, the other three composers here will be new discoveries for most listeners. William Hurlstone died of asthma at age 30 and was nearly forgotten. Dunhill's piano quartet contains one of the great viola solos in all chamber music. Independently wealthy, Roger Quilter was more famous for his fabulous parties than his fine chamber music!
