Customer Reviews:
A wonderful first exposure to the works of Philip Glass.......2007-05-19
I have only just recently started exploring the major minimalist composers and found this compilation by Philip Glass to be very interesting and perhaps a little bit more accessible in contrast with early compositions by Terry Riley. In general, the music on this compilation features ostinatos mixed with arpeggios and like most minimalism, the pieces are deeply meditative.
Glasspieces was originally performed in 1983; the nine movement In the Upper Room suite premiered in 1986; and both accompanied a ballet performance. Neither of the pieces on this compilation are presented in their original (complete) form. Specifically, only five of the nine movements (selected by Glass himself) originally included on In the Upper Room are presented on Dancepieces, while only movements 4 and 5 were taken from the original six movement Glassworks (1982). Track eight represents a single movement taken from the Akhnaten suite (1987). Admittedly, the abbreviated version of In the Upper Room does not work very well. Then again, I really did not mind too much because the music is fascinating. Of the two pieces my favorite is the more subdued and gloomy In the Upper Room, which emphasizes "classical" instrumentation.
In large part, the music on this album is very brooding, reflective, and dominated by woodwind, brass and string instruments. There are however, some extremely "rhythmically charged" moments where just percussion and synthesizers are used, e.g. Glasspiece No.3 Funeral from Akhnaten. The technique of the musicians on Glasspiece No. 3 is particularly dazzling. Melodies are also sprinkled throughout and add a lot to the texture of each piece. Total running time of the CD is 45'45" with In the Upper Room clocking in at approximately 23'25" and Glasspieces at 22'18". There are a number of musicians on both pieces and In the Upper Room includes conductor Michael Reisman on piano and synthesizers (it sounds like an Oberheim polyphonic and possibly a Yamaha CS80 polyphonic). Fortunately, the synthesizer tone colors are very warm and do not sound (too) synthetic in a 1980s way. In addition to the keyboardist, there are a number of string, brass, and woodwind players. Synthesizer use is much heavier on Glasspieces, although the second Glasspiece movement is dominated by strings and woodwinds and is very haunting (my personal favorite). Although nearly all instrumental music, the addition of voice (Dora Ohrenstein) on both pieces was a very nice touch.
All in all I found this compilation to be a great introduction to the works of minimalist composer Philip Glass. Although I had objections to the "butchered" version of In the Upper Room it really was not all that bad - in fact I am inspired to seek out the original. Recommended along with works by other minimalist composers including Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Lamonte Young.
The paradox of variety and minimalism.......2006-03-17
This collection gives a narrow but varied sample of Glass's pieces used by noted choreographers. The music is very danceable even for the non-professional and is highly recommended for teachers who want to broaden their dance students' sensibilities beyond stale over-orchestrated bits of "Nutcracker" or bubble gum pop music adored by "dance teams".
Sort of a disappointment..........2000-03-30
This is a collection of works from the early-mid 80s, for ballet performance. However, two of these pieces were previously released on the "Glassworks" collection and as such fit better in their original context. And the cycle "In the Upper Room" is here not presented en toto...which is a major point of irritation, given the extended playing time of CDs. However, this is the only place you can find the ensemble version of the 'Funeral' from "Akhenaten", which was a show-stopper from Glass's ensemble concerts of the mid-80s. So, while this is a plus, the inclusion of the 'recycled' "Glassworks" tracks is annoying, and the chop-up of the "In the Upper Room" cycle should be considered criminal, and someone at CBS needs their head examined for continuing the vinyl sequencing present here. Boo. Hiss.
Chilling.......1999-05-21
Even though the entire album is one of his best, the first Glasspience is absolutely amazing. It is quite haunting yet beautiful at the same time
A wonderful compilation of his compositions used in dance........1998-07-06
This inspiring assortment of Glass compositions gives this listener an understanding of how dance and movement work together. The pieces used Tharp's classic choreography to "The Upper Room" build to an ecstatic climax. This work is not to be missed.

How can you not like Philip Glass?.......2006-10-09
This album doesn't really have a title. It's a compliation of previous released material, but it's been remastered and it's an official release. The album consists of 4 masterpieces from Glass's early years. It's fabulous stuff. Another reviewer said it really grows on you, and it does. It's beautiful, hypnotic, and magnficent. And most of it is played by Glass himself on organ. I have an attraction to piano and organ music for some reason, and I just revel in this kind of stuff. I have around 20 Glass CD's (no albums), and I love almost everyone of them. I really like this one a lot. I know a lot of people really dislike Glass's music, and I honestly don't know why. It's magnificent.
Minimalist Masterworks.......2006-04-09
I first heard "Music in Similar Motion" at the American premier of the "Low Symphony". I, and much of the audience were amazed by Music in Similar Motion, all the keyboard parts connected to each other like a machine and the driving, hypnotic rhythms. I did not feel the same of the Low Symphony and Itaipu which were overblown orchestral scores. It is essential to listen to Philip Glass' early works to understand his true vision. In Music in Similar Motion, the highlight of the disc, echoes of it can be heard everywhere from Brian Eno to Laurie Anderson to Kraftwerk. Of the short pieces Philip Glass has done, it is the finest. Two Pages is formative, one of the first pieces he wrote for electric organ (the sound of the analog organs is entrancing) and it is not as cohesive as the others. Contrary Motion and Music in Fifths are a whole different story. The contraputal harmony between the the phrases are as fascinating as Bach's harpsichord works. I make that comparison because anything from a fugue to a scherzo had preset musical phrases and obviously were a source of inspiration for Philip Glass. Then we reach the aforesaid Music in Similar Motion which is absolute perfection. The way to acustom yourself to minimalism is to appreciate the piece as a whole instead of waiting for the gradual changes. Just like Ravi Shankar who was Philip Glass' mentor, the music is a series of phrases connected together, totally different from American music and a breath of fresh air for people who had to suffer through 12 tone and serialist music. Yes, some of Philip Glass' newer stuff is easier to get into but this disc captures why he mattered and why minimalism was a musical revolution.
Difficult, but well worth it.......2003-02-09
I first heard "Music in Similar Motion" (track 4) when I was around six or seven years old. It grabbed me straightaway with its arrangement of rhythmic patterns and harmony, and kept my attention for the full seventeen minutes. That piece fuelled my interest to date in experimental music.
For those who do not know these pieces, they are organ-based works which are based on rhythmic and harmonic systems, repeating themselves again and again. These systems get progressively longer as the pieces carry on, but how much longer they get is difficult to judge on listening, as they are not purely mathematical progressions. These pieces are all intense and unrelenting; you may very well be driven up the wall before you finish listening, but when you do get to the end, the sense of relief you get makes the whole experience well worth it. I found this was especially true of the original LP versions (whicb I still have).
This one sneaks up on you!.......2003-02-05
I'm a going-on-four-year Glass fan. At the risk of sounding snobbish, I wouldn't reccomend this disc to anyone who's spent less time than that as a Glass fan. Not that this music is not delicious; in fact - if you are a fan of the his early electronic pieces, this CD is a godsend (if you believe in that sort of thing.)
For those who are new to Glass, let me try and put it delicately but realistically. Have you ever heard the caricatures or jokes about Glass's minimalism, endlessly repeating? The infamous South Park episode where the character Glass writes a piece consisting of one note? Well, if you aren't familiar with his music, this will sound like that. Rest assured, it grows on you, but you will need tons of patience to become an addict like me!
For the rest of us, don't hesitate. For the "early" fans, there IS NO alternative!!! Here's a brief description:
Two Pages: Michael Riesman on piano, Glass on organ. Very sparse piece starting with repeating chromatic 5 note sequence in minor key, gradually adding notes on the end of the prhase, taking notes away from the beginning of the phrase. This one will suprise you how fast it grows on you!!
Music in Contrary Motion: Suprising use of intricate counterpoint for early Glass. Minor key solo organ alternating between I and V chord with counterpoint overtop. Phrases get longer according to a planned sequence that (according to Glass) can be added ad infinitum and go on for days. This one's a little too tense for me.
Music in fifths (and) Music in Similar Motion: I put these together as the concept (except for the intervals involved) is similar. Again, repeated phrases with expanding and contrasting sequences but both of these are for full ensemble (back in the Dickie Landry days). Music in fifths is a joke as it is written entirely in fifths, the cardinal sin of counterpoint.
All in all, a good disc. The recordings are old but remastered so the quality is good and like I mentioned before, despite the EXTREME sparsity of these pieces, they will grow on you quicker than you think!
Music as Theory.......2002-10-05
This is another Glass CD that's difficult to rate. This disc serves more as an important historical note than as entertaining music. It shows the very early stages of Glass' development as a truly unique composer. Many of the ideas that he would use to great effect in later works like "Koyaanisqatsi" are heard here in their germinal form. In a Glass musical chronology, it's easy to see how works like "Music in 12 Parts" emerged from pieces like "Music in Fifths". I really enjoy the last four sections from "Music in Twelve Parts" because it is has a traditional musicality to it that Glass' very early work did not. On this disc, Glass is still forming his repetitive, minimalist style...sans the listenable musicality that he would infuse in later works. ("Music in Similar Motion" probably comes closest to being listenable for extended periods and could easily bemistaken for one of the first three sections of "Music in 12 Parts".) This disc is heavy on abstract theory, but short on what most would percieve as "music". It should only be undertaken by those who are hard core fans or "completists" who want to hear how it all began.

Philip Glass's early works have purely functional titles, and this one is no exception. His masterpiece in this repetitious and rigorously structural composition style-- Music in Twelve Parts--may be just too much for some people to take. If so, then this disc may be just the ticket. Of course, Glass's many fans will snap it up as a matter of course, but as the title implies, there's somewhat more happening here than in his very first minimalist works--just enough so that newcomers to the style ought to find something to enjoy. An important disc, then, both as a milestone in the history of a major musical movement and a reminder of style that the composer has long since abandoned. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Actually, three question marks........2004-12-05
This one will get anyone out of your house if you don't want them there. If they are the type of person who would stay because they "enjoy" it, then you should open a bottle of wine and discuss things like music as a method of torture.
hypnotic.......2002-05-18
This is my favorite of all of Glass's works I've heard. It repeats, but it changes in bits through a process. The rhythm oif this music produces very interesting effects. I can listen to it as a direct extension of my heartbeat in the background, not even music, but sound that keeps itself viscous & makes itself understood. I can stare at it entranced by it for the whole hour it lasts for hardly aware that any real time is passing. When someone else walks into the room while this cd is playing, it doesn't usually occur to them that a cd is playing, but that life just got so much more exciting once they came into the room where I was. & since the music does change in increments over time, it isn't difficult to commit to like the alarum Einstein. Glass says that he doesn't like it much now because it's "too spacey" for his tastes. It's spacey. It's stellar. Thanks, Philip.
Different mix from the original, but great to have available.......2001-05-24
Those familiar with the original vinyl recording of this in a very limited release from Chatham Records will definitely notice some differences in the CD remix. To my mind, the backing wind and voice parts are now overbalanced and stick out too much in front, contrary to the idea of the piece, which was that these parts were to be like overtones arising out of the churning electric organ riffs. Also the digital remastering tends to make more apparent the occasional raggedness in the performance, something that is understandable given the feat of endurance this piece probably was (most likely this was an hours-long performance whittled down to fit on 4 sides of vinyl). Still, it is great to have this in an unbroken span and not have to get up & flip the record over every 15 mins. This is Glass when he was at his best, before he became a hack; a pure driving cosmic sound that he later would disavow as 'too spacey' for his tastes.
Highway.......2000-06-22
Almost a 'single' of 'Music in 12 Parts', this is easier to listen to in one sitting. It's still not headphone listening though - think of it as an audio backdrop and it works, almost, as if one was staring at an abstract painting. As Glass' career progressed he reduced the purely cyclic / generative elements of his works to humanistic levels - 'Einstein on the Beach' and 'Dance 1-5' were the last things he did that could be recognisable as descendents of this new music. The fact that it comes from 1971 is striking - it still sounds modern, and it's fascinating to compare it with the contemporary works of his semi-rival, Steve Reich - whilst Reich used percussive, almost jazzy rhythms, Glass' music is a steadily-flowing concrete road changing in texture but never, ever losing its cool.
Minimalismus Maximus !.......2000-06-20
Beware ! This work is PURE MINIMALISMUS, 61 minutes of repetitions and modulations on the same theme . That is not a problem, instead, a real therapy ! But you should know it in advance. If you don't know any other work from Glass, or from other minimalists, try any other cd ( Glasswoks, is more suitable for you !). But if you think that you're ready for a pure minimalist experience, don't exitate any longer !

Scottish Opera: Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier".......2007-02-16
Scottish Opera's 1971 production of "Der Rosenkavalier", conducted by Alexander Gibson, was previously only available as a 1 LP issue; later released as a 2 CD set with "Don Giovanni" highlights. Janet Baker, presumably due to contractual obligations, was replaced by Anne Howells as Octavian in these recordings. More than 3 decades later, we now have an off-air recording of the whole opera, in quite acceptable sound, too, with Dame Janet in her original role. This 4 CD set on the Ponto label, also has Janet Baker in the Prologue to Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos" and a further bonus; her later recording of Schumann's Frauenliebe und-leben with Graham Johnson's piano accompaniment. I'm astonished that this mouth-watering CD set is such a well kept secret. It now has a pride-of-place on my shelves.

Customer Reviews:
Great Appetizers but Patchy Sound Quality!.......2006-05-21
Philip Glass' music is probably very unlike what you are used to hearing if you are new to his style. For me when I first heard this album, it was like an assault on the senses and my first reaction was to cringe and I wanted to throw it out after just a few minutes. But then as I decided to give the album another chance - after all, I had spent quite a bit of cash on this 3-disc album - I realised that the music definitely grows on you.
It dawned upon me after a few listens that some of the material here is really very beautiful indeed. The tracks are also chosen by Philip himself as is explained in the liner notes that he penned as well. The tracks have been remastered too, except the problem is that the tracks are a combination of DDD and ADD mastering. As a result, the sound quality suffers from track to track, as all the "Einstein On the Beach" selections are ADD mastered while the rest are DDD and the difference is very noticeable: volume and sound quality levels dip considerably as the tracks change which is quite irritating.
Still, if you are interested in sampling Glass' work without having to buy the whole albums, this is probably the best place to start. I know that as a result of this appetizer, I am now interested in seeking out well remastered versions of "Solo Piano", "Einstein on the Beach" and "Glassworks." Music that defies description and is yet so addictive, let's hope they release a better remastered version of this and indeed the entire Glass catalog soon. I, for one, am waiting with baited breath...
An excellent best of collection.......2004-07-27
I have to say that I prefer Glass' earlier, small ensemble works because of their striking originality, both in composition and instrumentation. The pieces on this CD are for the most part examples of his later much more ambitious, yet timbrally conventional orchestral works. There are tantalizing bits of earlier work such as Dance No. 5 but in general too much weight has been put on the later, larger operas and there isn't enough of his earlier ensemble work. However, the music contained herein is universally excellent and serves as a good sampler for those who don't want to buy all of Akhnaten, Satyagraha and Einstein on the Beach and who want a good, if flawed, overview of Phillip Glass' career.
That said, Glassworks is still a very good "best of" package and well worth having for the more frugal or casual Phillip Glass fan or for those unfamiliar with his work. If you can only own one Phillip Glass album this would be the one to get. I'm going to give it 5 stars just because of its beauty.
A Fine Collection.......2002-01-17
I was so relieved when this 3-disc set was released, because, while I like Glass's music generally, complete operas are out of my already overextended budget. At last I could hear highlights from the operas and other Glassworks without breaking the bank.
I don't fully understand the arrangement of pieces on the discs, which mixes and matches works indiscriminately (it seems), and the two songs from the "Liquid Days" disc are recorded at a much higher volume level from the rest of the material, so I frequently program them out to avoid the annoyance. But all in all, I'm glad I got "Glass Masters".
A great selection of Glass' Music.......2000-11-05
As anyone who has listened to Glass before knows, his music is not the easiest to listen to, but it is also wonderful once you get used to it. This is probably the best selection that you will get from his compositions without having to buy each of the operas separately. If you enjoy Philip Glass (but don't want to spend hundreds on the full operas) or are just interested in hearing his music, this is definitely the place to start. An incredible compilation!
