Better known among his fans as "Iz," Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a phenomenon in the Hawai'ian Islands totally below Mainland radar. So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. Ka Ano'i was the 1991 winner of the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best contemporary Hawai'ian album, and Iz himself won for best male vocalist that year. This album is appealing mainly for its honesty and simplicity: simplicity of tone consistent with the casual ukulele and slack-key sound, and honesty of voice through Hawai'i-enhanced allegorical tracks like "Coney Island Washer Woman" and "I'll Be There." A later version of Iz's "Over the Rainbow" was featured in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, as well. Despite his imposing stature, Iz was an embodiment of the simplicity and gentleness in the music itself, more noticeable in this early album than in his later work. --Erik MackiCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
The soundtrack of the show KÀ is the most ambitious musical project produced by Cirque du Soleil to date. While remaining firmly rooted in Cirque du Soleil musical tradition, the recording features a symphony orchestra and a 40-member choir, as such creating a unique musical universe both epic and lyrical. The powerful percussion and distinctive sound invites comparisons with classic movie soundtracks creating "a rich soundtrack that lives up to the overarching eye-candy on display", says Variety. To create this sound, KÀ was recorded at the renowned Paramount Studios in Los Angeles and in Montreal, where Cirque du Soleil is based. Hollywood veteran Simon Leclerc, the conductor for Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise and the play Les Misérables, conducted the orchestra in Los Angeles.
Composer René Dupéré has been part of Cirque du Soleil since the very beginning. KÀ is the first work Dupéré has composed for Cirque du Soleil since 1994's Alegría, the best-selling Cirque du Soleil recording to date. "We pulled out all the stops in the making of this album, and the result is, I believe, a record of the highest quality," says Dupéré. The album KÀ is worthy of the show that Time magazine called "bigger than Vegas."
Both the stage production and the soundtrack called for highly innovative use of musical technology. Says Martin Lord-Ferguson, co-producer of the recording: "Technological innovation, artistic audacity and technical prowess are all features of KÀ that the soundtrack had to reflect."

Strong and refresh music.......2007-04-12
KA is good as well, but I just don't like that last few pieces, specifically, my ears just don't do well with that female singer's voice. Nothing against her personally, just don't feel right to hear her voice.
The choir is great, music is great, if you can listen with good sound system, you should be able to feel the battle field.
It has the 5-star potential if they have different female singer.

An admirable soundtrack.......2007-03-29
Out of the thousands of CDs I have, all but a handful are classical music. This handful includes the live CD of Mystere and this studio recording of KA. I do not quite know why I like this CD so much. Perhaps because it reminds me of some of the visuals of the show, but sometimes I don't quite remember what those visuals were. (Although I remember "Flight," with that staggering many-sailed ship "sailing" across the air.) The soundtrack is extremely coherent, themes emerging, disappearing, and reemerging later in altered form. And yet, the music is quite varied. The playing and sound quality are excellent as well. The mood is, overall, rather dark, as another reviewer said, but then the show was dark. I would have to listen carefully many times to do a decent job of figuring out the classical music influences here, but the effect of various requiems (e.g., from Britten, Berlioz, and Verdi) can be heard. Yes, that will darken things.
To the person who complained about KA the show (I think he gave a review here of one star), you are supposed to be reviewing the music, not the show. However, at the show, there was a combination of live and recorded music. While I, too, prefer 100% live music, the size of these orchestral forces makes this just impossible given a realistic performance space for the show. The musicians couldn't be in an orchestra pit -- that's where the complex stage machinery was. Where would the choir be? Hanging from the rafters? All 40 of them? (Cirque would and has done something like this for a handful.) I think your criticism (of the show) did not take into account that live performance imposes its own constraints.

Of the slack-key guitarists that pianist George Winston has brought to light from Hawaii, the most eloquent and forward-looking is Keola Beamer, which is ironic given that Beamer's first album in 1973 was called Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar in the Real Old Style. There's nothing old about the music on Soliloquy. Unlike most of his brethren, Beamer rarely sings, and that seems to free him from the sometimes clichéd phrasing and melodies identified with Hawaiian music. Even without those signposts, however, Beamer's music is distinctly Hawaiian, beginning with the slack-key guitar. It's a standard acoustic guitar, but the strings are tuned lower--literally, slacker--than normal. It gives the guitar a lazy, wistful sound just shy of yearning. Soliloquy mixes Beamer's original compositions with traditional songs in unique arrangements, including some for two acoustic guitars. A bit more low key than his previous albums, and featuring more nylon than steel string, Soliloquy is a quiet meditation born from the idyllic environment of Hawaii. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

No deeper funk alive.......2005-04-09
This is music that would not only inform 70s r&b but would filter into the jazz of the day. And the band was just amazing -funky guitar and organ riffs, and a beautifully understated but stunningly precise rhythm section.
Seminal funk........2004-07-29
If you're a modern music producer, please do yourself a favor and listen to the drums on this album. They're back a bit in the mix but still pop, the snare doesn't sound like the grand canyon but it's got a ring to it, and the cymbals stay out of the way of everything else while still aggressive. Quite frankly, just about every modern drum "sound" I've heard, from rock to the anemic junk that passes for funk these days to jazz, is a gutless wonder by comparison. That "metallic" snare sound that's so popular these days (on rock recordings by everyone from Pearl Jam to 311 to No Doubt to every so-called "punk" band on the radio) sucks. It just does, it's not musical, it's too "open" to focus a groove. Get over it, please, and let us know when you've got it right. Whoever produces Queens of The Stone Age or Cake can chill, though, 'cause you're close. A bit more snap and some high-end blap and you're there. Can you imagine how absolutely tough a good punk band would sound with a drum kit recorded like the Meters recorded their drum kit?
I think you get the gist that I like this album. I've lived with it for a long time now and it's never out of the crate (i.e., DJ crate). I find excuses to play cuts off this thing everywhere -- weddings, house parties, whatever. If the DJ saved your life, he probably did it with a song from this record on one that sampled it or the other two Meters albums ("The Meters", "Struttin'") from this era.
Someone wake me up when a modern "rock" or "funk" band sounds and plays half this good. Pay attention to the grooves on "Funky Miracle", "Look Ka Ka Py Py", and "Pungee". That stuff's much harder to play than it sounds, no one I've heard does it right besides the Meters themselves.
There are imitation funk bands out there these days trying to cop the old-school sound, but they don't have the chops to pull it off. Do yourself a favor and savor the real thing. The Meters is it, and this album is definitively it.
One of the best early 70's Funk Instrumentals EVER.......2003-09-09
I initially bought this album after hearing it on the speakers in one of my favorite (vinyl) record stores. I had never heard the Meters before but simply thought it was exactly the kind of upbeat groovy stuff that would be perfect for parties, drinking Abita beer and hanging out in the sunshine. This is true, but I have subsequently been blown away by how amazing this CD is.
I bought it over 10 years ago and this album has never sat long on the shelf. It seems like the grooves that were laid down on Look-Ka-Py-Py just never get old. It's very funky, a little cheesy (in a good way), and everyone seems to dig it. These guys are fantastic musicians, too.
This album is a classic and (arguably) the best of the Meters collection- a great 1st Meters album!

"Ramses Bringer of War" has these trumpet blasts at first, then the brutal riffage. "Smashing The Antiu" and "Serpent Headed Mask" have some of the best blastbeats ever heard, while the closer track, "Beneath Eternal Oceans of Sand" is more of an ambience track.
This is a great start for a breakthrough band. Recommended.

Very pleasantly surprised. Worth listening to, worth owning........2007-07-10
The works within are rather mellow and are not upbeat like some of his other songs/works, but I find that this CD makes a great companion piece to his other works - and just plain excellent on its own. My favorite song on the CD, The Snow Goddess (also with George Winston), is phenomenal. Brilliant, even. In fact, not only is this the best song on the CD it's also one of my all time favorites by any artist. It's just that good. However, the quality of this song isn't quite on par with it's release on the Windham Hill Winter Solstice V holiday CD, but a nice addition to this CD nonetheless.
And speaking of quality, that is really the only aspect of this CD that's worth complaining about. I'm not sure what happened or who oversaw this release, but it's not as polished as Keola Beamer's other works, or others by Windham Hill and Dancing Cat records. It sounds as if my speakers are busted on certain songs (this is obviously not the case). And going back to The Snow Goddess, it sounds as if someone turned the volume up on a lesser quaility CD player without the music playing - as you hear a terribly audible white noise throughout. Quite a shame.
Yet even with this quality issue being a nuisance, I can't lower it's score. I liked it too much to do so. It's not for everyone, but by no means would it make for a bad purchase. A must for George Winston fans looking to add another Christmas work of his to their collection (The Little Drummer Boy is very nice and just over four minutes in length), those who are fans of Keola Beamer (Wooden Boat is still my favorite CD of his), and recommended to classical music listeners and all those who enjoy good music.

1 Star for Ghost in the Shell.......2006-02-01
It's hard for me to describe the actual music in detail, because there's such little music to describe. This CD is more like one of those sound effects collection CD's you buy at the loonie store for 2 bucks. How people love it is beyond me - it's there opinion, to be sure, but I sure can't agree with it.
If you're looking for melodical music, or action music, or beautiful music, or basically interesting music of any kind, look elsewhere. This isn't a popular opinion, I know, but it's my personal feelings of hatred towards this "score". Do yourself a favour and go buy a score that will really give you some great music, like Passion of the Christ, or House of Sand and Fog, or Rabbit Proof Fence, or Requiem for a Dream. Not this thing, which couldn't carry a tune if it held it in a bucket.
cheers
