Better known among his fans as "Iz," Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a phenomenon in the Hawai'ian Islands totally below Mainland radar. So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. Ka Ano'i was the 1991 winner of the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best contemporary Hawai'ian album, and Iz himself won for best male vocalist that year. This album is appealing mainly for its honesty and simplicity: simplicity of tone consistent with the casual ukulele and slack-key sound, and honesty of voice through Hawai'i-enhanced allegorical tracks like "Coney Island Washer Woman" and "I'll Be There." A later version of Iz's "Over the Rainbow" was featured in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, as well. Despite his imposing stature, Iz was an embodiment of the simplicity and gentleness in the music itself, more noticeable in this early album than in his later work. --Erik Macki

It was the most relaxing cd I have ever listen to, even tho you dont understand the word you can feel what they are saying

3 out of 5 stars okay.......2007-01-10

It was okay but not as good as his other cd's that i own

4 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly beautiful.......2007-01-03

On a trip to Hawaii many years ago we were introduced to the wonderful music of IZ. What an incredible man, and voice. I have two of Iz's CD's and one DVD and they are all wonderful. When the Washington rain gets to me in the winter, I put in IZ and turn the heater up and dream I'm in Hawaii. Mahalo

5 out of 5 stars ka'Ano'i.......2006-11-05

On atrip to Hawaii, riding a tour bus, this CD was playing, it was so good, had to buy it as soon as I got home, this music by IZ is so compelling, I had to find out more about the man, and my findings made the music even more meaningful, this is the second CD I have, and prize both of them highly,

4 out of 5 stars Not His Best.......2006-07-30

After two outstanding IZ albums (Facing Future and Alone in IZ World), this was my third purchase. What a disappointment. This is just not as good as his other albums. For the man who has a singing voice of an angel, this was a shock. Please note too that the version of Over the Rainbow and Wonderful World is not the one you hear on his other albums and is not nearly as good. There are a few nice songs on this album, but not a good first IZ album.

Album Description

The soundtrack of the show KÀ is the most ambitious musical project produced by Cirque du Soleil to date. While remaining firmly rooted in Cirque du Soleil musical tradition, the recording features a symphony orchestra and a 40-member choir, as such creating a unique musical universe both epic and lyrical.

The powerful percussion and distinctive sound invites comparisons with classic movie soundtracks creating "a rich soundtrack that lives up to the overarching eye-candy on display", says Variety. To create this sound, KÀ was recorded at the renowned Paramount Studios in Los Angeles and in Montreal, where Cirque du Soleil is based. Hollywood veteran Simon Leclerc, the conductor for Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise and the play Les Misérables, conducted the orchestra in Los Angeles.

Composer René Dupéré has been part of Cirque du Soleil since the very beginning. KÀ is the first work Dupéré has composed for Cirque du Soleil since 1994's Alegría, the best-selling Cirque du Soleil recording to date. "We pulled out all the stops in the making of this album, and the result is, I believe, a record of the highest quality," says Dupéré. The album KÀ is worthy of the show that Time magazine called "bigger than Vegas."

Both the stage production and the soundtrack called for highly innovative use of musical technology. Says Martin Lord-Ferguson, co-producer of the recording: "Technological innovation, artistic audacity and technical prowess are all features of KÀ that the soundtrack had to reflect."

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!.......2007-05-22

Only by listening to the CD, I'm already captivated.
Can't wait for the chance to go Vegas to attend the show....!!

5 out of 5 stars Ka- Fabulous!!.......2007-05-07

Cirque du Soleil's Ka is a beautiful acrobatic show. I so much loved this show, that I wanted the music. And the score doesnot let one down. From it's wonderful rhythmic songs to it's bombastic tones. I thoroughly give it my highest recomendation.

4 out of 5 stars Strong and refresh music.......2007-04-12

I own several Cirque Du Soleil's CDs, this comes to my 2nd favorite. My all time favor of Cirque Du Soleil is Varekai because of its story line, the composition of the music, needless to say, the Fire Within on Bravo TV.
KA is good as well, but I just don't like that last few pieces, specifically, my ears just don't do well with that female singer's voice. Nothing against her personally, just don't feel right to hear her voice.
The choir is great, music is great, if you can listen with good sound system, you should be able to feel the battle field.
It has the 5-star potential if they have different female singer.

5 out of 5 stars Made me a true Cirque fan.......2007-04-01

My husband and I have always enjoyed watching Cirque du soleil on TV, but when we saw KA while on our honeymoon in Las Vegas, we were hooked and saw another show before we left that week. We purchased this album after we found ourselves humming it as we walked down the strip. Now we listen to it whenever we want to remember our honeymoon! Brilliant music that still gives me chills.

>>> It's very rare that I do this, but I also recently discovered the most thought provoking Instrumentals by MEHDl (Pronounced meddie). I was absolutely blown away by the sheer beauty of this music, (a true GEM). Full samples are at S00THINGMUSIC.C0M (type url in lower case)...JUST LISTEN. I have a feeling that you'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars An admirable soundtrack.......2007-03-29

I never paid much attention to Cirque until I visited Las Vegas last year (I never paid much attention to Vegas before then either). But, a fellow music snob saw Mystere at Vegas years ago, and it was the only thing she liked about that business trip. So I decided to see Mystere, then Zumanity, then KA.

Out of the thousands of CDs I have, all but a handful are classical music. This handful includes the live CD of Mystere and this studio recording of KA. I do not quite know why I like this CD so much. Perhaps because it reminds me of some of the visuals of the show, but sometimes I don't quite remember what those visuals were. (Although I remember "Flight," with that staggering many-sailed ship "sailing" across the air.) The soundtrack is extremely coherent, themes emerging, disappearing, and reemerging later in altered form. And yet, the music is quite varied. The playing and sound quality are excellent as well. The mood is, overall, rather dark, as another reviewer said, but then the show was dark. I would have to listen carefully many times to do a decent job of figuring out the classical music influences here, but the effect of various requiems (e.g., from Britten, Berlioz, and Verdi) can be heard. Yes, that will darken things.

To the person who complained about KA the show (I think he gave a review here of one star), you are supposed to be reviewing the music, not the show. However, at the show, there was a combination of live and recorded music. While I, too, prefer 100% live music, the size of these orchestral forces makes this just impossible given a realistic performance space for the show. The musicians couldn't be in an orchestra pit -- that's where the complex stage machinery was. Where would the choir be? Hanging from the rafters? All 40 of them? (Cirque would and has done something like this for a handful.) I think your criticism (of the show) did not take into account that live performance imposes its own constraints.

Of the slack-key guitarists that pianist George Winston has brought to light from Hawaii, the most eloquent and forward-looking is Keola Beamer, which is ironic given that Beamer's first album in 1973 was called Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar in the Real Old Style. There's nothing old about the music on Soliloquy. Unlike most of his brethren, Beamer rarely sings, and that seems to free him from the sometimes clichéd phrasing and melodies identified with Hawaiian music. Even without those signposts, however, Beamer's music is distinctly Hawaiian, beginning with the slack-key guitar. It's a standard acoustic guitar, but the strings are tuned lower--literally, slacker--than normal. It gives the guitar a lazy, wistful sound just shy of yearning. Soliloquy mixes Beamer's original compositions with traditional songs in unique arrangements, including some for two acoustic guitars. A bit more low key than his previous albums, and featuring more nylon than steel string, Soliloquy is a quiet meditation born from the idyllic environment of Hawaii. --John Diliberto

Infused with the islands - recreates them in sound. The perfect accompaniment to a day or evening on the water. This music gently, deeply sinks in. I'm buying another as a gift for a friend so I can get mine back!

5 out of 5 stars Gentle Island sounds.......2002-12-03

Keola's latest release for George Winstons Dancing Cat Records is a wonderful, soothing, melodic trip through the Islands. There is no low point on the album, and as the songs all are of a quiet tempo with similiar feel, they flow together as a sort of Hawaiian slack guitar suite. Highly recommended! Also- if you get the chance- see Keola live. He puts on a super show.

Two cracking late-`70s albums from Blues Rock guitarist Johnny Winter. Muddy Waters and James Cotton feature on Nothin' But The Blues. Johnny Winter is still actively gigging and recording. Digitally re-mastered and slipcased. New notes.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two of his best!.......2007-06-15

This is a great opportunity to have both these albums on CD. I have both on CD and vinyl already, but the remastering is very good. Despite being 30 years since original release they are still a great collection of blues. Check out the re-issued "Johnny Winter" "Second Winter" and "Progressive Blues Experiment" CDs.

4 out of 5 stars About time these albums were re released........2007-06-12

Having owned both of them on vinyl since the late 70's I was amazed to see that finally they are out together no less. Two great albums by a man on top of his game. By the way my turn table has gone the way of the steam engine but the albums are still in pristine order.

5 out of 5 stars JW in His Prime, Taking His Time.......2007-05-15

Firstly, you probably already have these on vinyl and want to know if the quality is there. Yes, these are Sony authorized productions. In fact, they are digitally remastered...it's sounds great, no worries. And yes both albums are on a single CD. Nothing But.. has been out for years and is a great blues album. Backed by Muddy's band including James Cotton on harp, this recording of original material has JW singing good time, rough, heartfelt blues. Unlike the earlier arena rock albums, he slows it down and delivers core blues. Also the relaxed time and fun in studio really comes through here. Now this is the first I've found White, Hot & Blue on CD, and thank God for that. This is a total gem of a recording. Same core blues, but definitely more plugged in. Backed by a very tight group of smoking players, this finds JW on primarily covers, putting the originals in their best possible light. The surprise is Pat Ramsey on harp, I can't say if he's technically great, but he sounds awesome. The best description of this album, "slinky." These recordings supported JW on tour enlightening us to purely American music played by a man that can only be described as a National Treasure. I dare you to listen to these recordings and be in a bad mood.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No deeper funk alive.......2005-04-09

The Meters were the most underrrated band to emerge out of the late 60s/early 70s funk explosion.

This is music that would not only inform 70s r&b but would filter into the jazz of the day. And the band was just amazing -funky guitar and organ riffs, and a beautifully understated but stunningly precise rhythm section.

    5 out of 5 stars Seminal funk........2004-07-29

To paraphrase a recent truck commercial, "it's a big, tough funk album. What's not to like?"

If you're a modern music producer, please do yourself a favor and listen to the drums on this album. They're back a bit in the mix but still pop, the snare doesn't sound like the grand canyon but it's got a ring to it, and the cymbals stay out of the way of everything else while still aggressive. Quite frankly, just about every modern drum "sound" I've heard, from rock to the anemic junk that passes for funk these days to jazz, is a gutless wonder by comparison. That "metallic" snare sound that's so popular these days (on rock recordings by everyone from Pearl Jam to 311 to No Doubt to every so-called "punk" band on the radio) sucks. It just does, it's not musical, it's too "open" to focus a groove. Get over it, please, and let us know when you've got it right. Whoever produces Queens of The Stone Age or Cake can chill, though, 'cause you're close. A bit more snap and some high-end blap and you're there. Can you imagine how absolutely tough a good punk band would sound with a drum kit recorded like the Meters recorded their drum kit?

I think you get the gist that I like this album. I've lived with it for a long time now and it's never out of the crate (i.e., DJ crate). I find excuses to play cuts off this thing everywhere -- weddings, house parties, whatever. If the DJ saved your life, he probably did it with a song from this record on one that sampled it or the other two Meters albums ("The Meters", "Struttin'") from this era.

Someone wake me up when a modern "rock" or "funk" band sounds and plays half this good. Pay attention to the grooves on "Funky Miracle", "Look Ka Ka Py Py", and "Pungee". That stuff's much harder to play than it sounds, no one I've heard does it right besides the Meters themselves.

There are imitation funk bands out there these days trying to cop the old-school sound, but they don't have the chops to pull it off. Do yourself a favor and savor the real thing. The Meters is it, and this album is definitively it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best early 70's Funk Instrumentals EVER.......2003-09-09

If you like newer funk, such as the instrumental Beastie Boys stuff or the less heavy, more funky Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes BUY THIS. This is where it all came from. The influence this album has had cannot be overestimated.

I initially bought this album after hearing it on the speakers in one of my favorite (vinyl) record stores. I had never heard the Meters before but simply thought it was exactly the kind of upbeat groovy stuff that would be perfect for parties, drinking Abita beer and hanging out in the sunshine. This is true, but I have subsequently been blown away by how amazing this CD is.

I bought it over 10 years ago and this album has never sat long on the shelf. It seems like the grooves that were laid down on Look-Ka-Py-Py just never get old. It's very funky, a little cheesy (in a good way), and everyone seems to dig it. These guys are fantastic musicians, too.

This album is a classic and (arguably) the best of the Meters collection- a great 1st Meters album!

4 out of 5 stars Great music, O.K. sound quality.......2000-07-20

One of the best vibes out there! Short (37 min) but very rewarding album, deserves multiple listens. Surprizing how none of The Meters' tracks made it on any funk's greatest hits... Sound quality is the only disappointment, it is sort of muffled. Sundazed could do a better job remastering this essential records. Still, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars this is the funk that musicians listen to........1999-12-07

I would be outright lying if I denied the fact that this album changed my life and the way I look at music, the way I feel music. This is the album that made me take up the hammond B-3. This is the album that made me clap my hands on the two instead of the one. This album is the typification of instrumental funk, but unlike James Brown's relentless-groove all-aboard specials you get an ample handful of small, perfect morsels, each of them an example of control, poise, and musicianship. Never have I heard funk express so many seperate emotions as on this album. There are no favorites on this album; it's all impeccable. If this doesn't change your life you've eiher already heard it or you're dead.

If you are into Death metal and especially if you like death growlers like Suffocation and others - you owe it to yourself to purchase every Nile CD you can find. They are just amazing. The production is just perfection and the scale of Nile CDs is just epic. Priveledged listening.

5 out of 5 stars Amongst the Catacombs of AWESOME.......2007-01-28

This is an amazing release by Nile. Although not too recent, it is still one of the best albums I have ever listened to, and I still listen to it every day. From the exciting day that I ordered it, to today, and probably a while further than tomorrow, I do, and will always, love this CD. Definetly a 5 star

    5 out of 5 stars Good Lord..........2006-06-28

Nile is pure bliss. I mean, this is not just an out-of-the-ordinary death metal band. This is a band that blends death metal brutality and technicality with Egyptian themes. And they hail from South Carolina. Amazing, ain't it?

"Ramses Bringer of War" has these trumpet blasts at first, then the brutal riffage. "Smashing The Antiu" and "Serpent Headed Mask" have some of the best blastbeats ever heard, while the closer track, "Beneath Eternal Oceans of Sand" is more of an ambience track.

This is a great start for a breakthrough band. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars PURE MUSICAL GENIUS AND BRUTALITY!!!.......2006-05-01

Nile have to be the most unique death metal band ever! They combine death metal with Egyptian music! This sounds like a disaster but it's actually very cool in practice. Karl Sanders is an awesome death metal vocalist and also an awesome guitarist! His growls are very extreme and and are actually rather easy to understand unlike jokes like Mortician's Will Rahmer. His guitar work is very fast and is right up there with Slayer's Kerry King, Death's Chuck Schuldner(RIP), and Children of Bodom's Alexi Laiho in terms of bloody fast riffs. My favorite track is "Opening of the Mouth" which is probably has the best transition from Egyptian music to death metal. If you're looking for a death metal album that's different, you can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Nile album.......2006-04-26

Nile are without a doubt, one of the fastest, heaviest, and most extreme death metal bands ever, and I love'em. They're one of my favorite death metal bands ever, and also among my top 20 favorite bands of all time. Their 1998 breakthrough album "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka" is my favorite album from these guys. I bought this album along with "In Their Darkened Shrines" when I went down to Eau Claire over the weekend, and I've been listening to it ever since. "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka" has all the right elements like every Nile album that you can think of: Brutal deep growling vocals, menacing guitar riffs, crazy wild solos, rampaging drums, what more do you need. Vocalist/guitarist Karl Sanders growls and roars like a gorilla on steroids, and his guitarwork on here is just flatout incredible. He just lets off a barrage of monster shredding riffs that'll tear your bare skin off, and wild solos that'll scorch your back. There's also some good bass lines from Chief Spires, and excellent drumming from Pete Hammoura (who both do backing vocals as well). This guy can do it all. Rampaging double bass kicks, lightning fast blast beats, you name it. My favorite songs on here are "Smashing the Antiu", "Ramses Bringer of War", "Barra Edinazzu", "Serpent Headed Mask", "The Howling of the Jinn", and "Beneath Eteranal Oceans of Sand". Please read on for the ratings.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleasantly surprised. Worth listening to, worth owning........2007-07-10

I mainly bought this all instrumental CD for one song only, The Little Drummer Boy (with George Winston), but was quite surprised at what it had to offer overall. I had no idea the CD contained variations on classical works, as I thought this was just a collection of winter themed Hawaiian slack key music. Each piece is well worth listening too, and keeping on hand for any occasion or mood. Many times a CD features a few really good songs, with a bunch of fillers that are merely passable. This CD is jam packed with quality music (though most of the songs are short at under two and one half minutes and do sound similar). I have other CDs by Keola Beamer, so I knew going into this that this would be a decent CD regardless, as he is quite talented.

The works within are rather mellow and are not upbeat like some of his other songs/works, but I find that this CD makes a great companion piece to his other works - and just plain excellent on its own. My favorite song on the CD, The Snow Goddess (also with George Winston), is phenomenal. Brilliant, even. In fact, not only is this the best song on the CD it's also one of my all time favorites by any artist. It's just that good. However, the quality of this song isn't quite on par with it's release on the Windham Hill Winter Solstice V holiday CD, but a nice addition to this CD nonetheless.

And speaking of quality, that is really the only aspect of this CD that's worth complaining about. I'm not sure what happened or who oversaw this release, but it's not as polished as Keola Beamer's other works, or others by Windham Hill and Dancing Cat records. It sounds as if my speakers are busted on certain songs (this is obviously not the case). And going back to The Snow Goddess, it sounds as if someone turned the volume up on a lesser quaility CD player without the music playing - as you hear a terribly audible white noise throughout. Quite a shame.

Yet even with this quality issue being a nuisance, I can't lower it's score. I liked it too much to do so. It's not for everyone, but by no means would it make for a bad purchase. A must for George Winston fans looking to add another Christmas work of his to their collection (The Little Drummer Boy is very nice and just over four minutes in length), those who are fans of Keola Beamer (Wooden Boat is still my favorite CD of his), and recommended to classical music listeners and all those who enjoy good music.

Great tracks fromt the entire CD. I look forward to any further efforts from Kenji Kawai.

1 out of 5 stars 1 Star for Ghost in the Shell.......2006-02-01

What an incessently annoying score this is! There are few times where I so feverishly hated what a composer was doing to my ears. I have about 400 scores in my collection, and this one is in my top 5 most hated. Absolutely atrocious.
It's hard for me to describe the actual music in detail, because there's such little music to describe. This CD is more like one of those sound effects collection CD's you buy at the loonie store for 2 bucks. How people love it is beyond me - it's there opinion, to be sure, but I sure can't agree with it.
If you're looking for melodical music, or action music, or beautiful music, or basically interesting music of any kind, look elsewhere. This isn't a popular opinion, I know, but it's my personal feelings of hatred towards this "score". Do yourself a favour and go buy a score that will really give you some great music, like Passion of the Christ, or House of Sand and Fog, or Rabbit Proof Fence, or Requiem for a Dream. Not this thing, which couldn't carry a tune if it held it in a bucket.
    cheers

4 out of 5 stars Ancien Japanese and Cantonese.......2006-01-02

It's great music.you don't have to see movie to enjoy this music.even I don't understand lyric still like it.Lyric of track 1,5 and 10 must be written with ancien Japanese probably around 4 or 5 century. I can pick some words but can't make sense from there. then track 11 is Cantonese of cause I don't understand but I like the song.Talk about track 11, English title is never presented anywhere on CD or liner note. All I get from liner note is lyric writing by Pong Canck Man, sing by 15 years old girl Fang Ka Wing, how Kawai struggle to find right person to sing and all these happen because Oshii wants short Cantonese song. but when I play this CD with my computer while connecting internet, media player shows track 11 title as " See you eveyday " I could be wrong but that must be the English translasion.

5 out of 5 stars bonus track? not quite..........2003-11-20

For those of you who are still clueless as to why track 11 was included in the soundtrack, go watch the movie again. If you listen carefully you can hear the song playing in the background during the chase scene in the market place. FYI, the song's in "cantonese" not japanese.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-10-08

I loved this... although the Track (11) is titled wrong. The real title is 11 - "Complex Universe."
