4 out of 5 stars Competent Performance, Decent Price.......2004-01-03

I listen to CDs at work and am always on the lookout for reasonably priced classical music. This fits the bill. While the Slovak Philharmonic may not be the first to pop in your mind when you think of the world's greatest orchestra, I find little to fault in these two pieces. (A high-quality audio system might expose some faults I've missed.) The opening horn theme of the second movement is confidently and clearly executed, the third movement and the Academic Festival Overture are both played with a boisterous hand that fits them well, and the fourth movement is as good as any an interpretation of the many variations in this piece. The CD includes explanatory liner notes by Keith Anderson which are a plesant addition. The only negative I can see in this, especially for the price, is that the Name and Artist values are not coded correctly on the CD - hardly a rare event, and the total length is only fifty minutes. This CD is a good introduction to Brahms in my estimation as well. Bon Apetit!
