A welcome addition..........2003-12-07
... to the chamber music catalog. Arthur Foote was a prominent Boston composer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, much influenced by Brahms. He excelled at chamber music and I think these works are quite representative. For those who know and like his works, Naxos has issued a three volume survey of great merit. The Copland pieces will probably seem more familiar and are equally wothwhile. Boston is exceptionally blessed with classical music performing talent and these performers represent the highest standards. A solid recommendation for the more adventurous.
Two Very Contrasting Composers.......2001-03-13
Copland and Foote are not very similar sounding when it comes to this assortment of chamber music. Foote sounds almost Baroque sounding at times while Copland is very distinctly modern.
You can sense the American spirit in the final movement of Copland's Flute and Piano Duo which is very good. The second movement is kinda dreary and the first is intersting indeed. The scales in the 1st and 2nd movement is what makes them so unique (even though there are two unique movement....ironic isn't it?). Much of the rest of the Copland works are soft but are experiments of sometimes seeming awkward chords to the untrained ear. But after a few listening, you get to like it.
Foote is a very interesting composer who I have not heard of until now. He has such a grand ability to compose simple melodies, but with great softness yet very out going. It's something that is only charistical of him. I recommend listening to some samples of his to get a feeling of what he is like.
The CD is something I don't grab all the time, but I'm sure glad it's there when I do want to listen to it. Very soothing but also demanding attention. I enjoy this light hearted CD.

Exquisite Esoteric Flute Masterpieces.......2003-10-01
Alexa Still has a more pleasing tone than some of the other flutists concertizing today and this comes through on the CD. Bravo. I wonder who made her flute because she doesn't seem to have the edgy tone favored by most contemporary flutists. Ms Still's tone is lush and full and her execution flawless. The only complaint I have is her tempo in the Hanson is somewhat languid (but then I can hear every note) I bought this disc because of the Hanson Serenade and the Griffes Poeme (the 1922 version she plays here has a B natural - that she holds - instead of the Urtext's B flat in the cadenza which felt more natural to me 40 years ago). Both the Griffes and the Hanson are somewhat hard to find on CD. But I really like this disc because of the Hovhaness Elibris and the Bloch Suite Modale, both stunningly beautiful pieces of flute music that should be played more often. Two old favorites and two new friends. Also on the disc are Foote's A Night Piece and Kennan's Night Soliloquoy which are not to be sniffed at. With this disc I finally replace my vinyl LP edition of Marice Sharp's "Music for a Golden Flute" (with the exception of the Honneger on the LP). I can understand everyone's enthusiasm for her playing, it is exquisite. If New Zealand can keep her they will be very lucky.
100 Star Review.......2001-06-27
This is the first Alexa Still CD I ever had. Almost have them all now. My musician Mother gave me this CD. It's hard to express in words how I feel about her performance. They say action speaks louder than words. True, because I'm going all the way to Boulder from Austin to have a four hour lesson from her! So this is my 100 Star Review!
Alexa Still - Flute.......1999-12-17
This contains very beautiful flute music by outstanding composers. The songs are contemporary. I very highly reccommend this cd. Alexa Still is a charm to listen to.

Fully within the pastoral tradition.......2000-07-20
A kindly gentlemen approached me after a talk I gave at a local library and gave me a gift of an Albany CD titled
(Troy 371), featuring talent from that region performing four American composers. The works were selected to feature flutist Margaret Swinchoski, who plays in each of the four pieces.
Leo Kraft's 1997 work "From The Hudson Valley" and Arthur Foote's "A Night Piece" (1918) are played by the Hudson Strings under JoAnn Falletta. Godfrey Schroth's "Spring in Buck's County" (1974) has pianist Ron Levy, who is joined by Scott Brubaker on the French horn in Eric Ewazen's "Ballade, Pastorale and Dance" (1993).
Do not be deterred by the dates of three of those works. They are as lovely as any "Romantic" nature piece from the late 1800s,with just that touch of atonality here and there to let us know where we are. The playing is exemplary. A perfect gift for yourself or a discerning friend.
The gentlemen, by the by, turned out to be Mr. Schroth himself.

Intonation just fine.......2005-12-31
I have to disagree with one of the previous reviewers. While I find the recording to have some odd properties apparently due to the way it was engineered, there is nothing wrong with the intonation. It is not "out of tune"; I have listened to the recording several times and I am very sensitive to this issue. It is a lovely recording of truly wonderful music that needs far more exposure and appreciation. Thank you, Mr. Foote. You deserve better recognition and this recording does a wonderful service to you.
Arthur Foote - quickly becoming a chamber music favorite!.......2003-12-12
Once again, I am indebted to Naxos for unearthing more great American composers than you can shake seven dollars at. Never before Naxos had I heard of Arthur Foote and I am greatful for the three CD's so far released of his chamber music. Not only am I a huge fan of Romantic era music, but of chamber music as well. This third release of his chamber music does not disappoint. The two Piano Trios and the two works for piano & violin are clearly the inspiration of other Romantic giants, such as Dvorak, Brahms, and Schumann. But as the reviewer for ClassicsToday.com stated, Foote is no wannabe. He most assuredly has his own voice and knows the difference between plagarism and being inspired by another composer.
If you are looking for excellent late Romantic chamber works, you can't go wrong with any of Arthur Foote's music. Enjoy!
Lovely Music--Minor American Classics.......2002-07-30
If you think that Brahms's chamber music idiom has legs, then the Trio No. 1 by Arthur Foote is for you. It has the stateliness and some of the drama of Brahms, though ultimately it emerges a more smiling and sunny creation than the German master ever seems to create in the key of C minor. The scherzo, for example, is a light-footed piece that bespeaks American rather than Germanic roots, though Foote was schooled after the best German models by America's first important symphonist, John Knowles Paine.
The Trio No. 2, likewise, is an entertaining amalgam of Germanic and American music making. The bumptious melody of the first movement, with its dotted rhythms, is clearly an American invention, but the sweeping romanticism of the whole also recalls the young Richard Strauss of the chamber music phase, as does the restless first melody of the finale. But whatever its provenance, what a lovely melody the second one, introduced by the piano, is! The coda memorably recalls the dotted rhythms of the first movement. This is a more assured and confident work than the First Trio and one that should be in the repertory of just about every American piano trio.
The melody and ballade are nice works, too, if much less meaty.
The three players involved do this ravishing music proud, and be assured that the sound here is all one could hope for: intimate yet open and airy, with great truthfulness. Certainly this CD is one of finest, if not the finest, chamber music entries in Naxos' American Classics series.
Beautiful, intimate, pieces. Excellent performances........2002-02-26
I have all 3 volumes of Arthur Foote's chamber music on Naxos, and consider all three to be wonderful, but this disc is the best of the three.
Foote's music was not groundbreaking, radical or new, but what he did, he did well. The result, classical music that will delight people who want a classical music experience, but might leave a few cold-hearted modernists bored. For the rest of us, from start to finish this is a delightful disc.
The performances are imeccable, and the recording is clear. At the bargain price it is an absolute steal.

Sparked my interest!.......2002-10-19
This cd is rated one of my favorites and still gets played- I used it to compare arrangements for performances and now mostly for enjoyment. Whenever I give a student one of the solos listed, I instruct them to listen to Mark Sparks and be amazed by his passion for flute playing.
Mark Sparks plays on a Burkart flute for this cd. What an endorsement for Burkart! He's "pure gold."
I'm not sure if he has any other albums but I will be sure to collect all of them as Mark Sparks really does sing on his instrument. If you enjoy the personality of Sir James Galway's playing with the brightness of Jim Walker- check him out.
Five resounding stars!.......2001-09-28
Mark Sparks has recorded here a wonderful collection of lesser known flute literature. His tone is incredible, his intonation flawless. He has a sense of phrasing that most flutists cannot produce without suffering the tone quality. For me, his performance of the Hindemith Sonata is the best recording available. Also worth mentioning is the balance between soloist and pianist. Great literature-great performances-great CD!

A good sampler of music nearly forgotten.......2005-02-13
First of three Vox Box sets (The best is the third, Contemporary String Quartet in the U.S.A.).
Charles Ives is the silent presence throughout this collection, for many of these works represent what Ives rebeled against & parodied. But given their time & place, we are now more appreciative of the "Boston School" & their contemporaries. What is remarkable is that this music sounds more American than German to our ears. Deliberately so in Daniel Gregory Mason's Quartet on Negro Themes. A contemporary of Ives, Mason (b. 1873) deserves credit for recognizing the best fruit of our musical vine; he took up those themes with care, respect & admiration.
Likewise the first of Charles Tomlinson Griffes' Two Sketches Based on [Chippewa] Indian Themes, a lovely piece in which he sensitively, & sentimentally, tried to capture the tone qualities of Native American performance as well as the modalities. The work has originality.
The example of Dvorak eventually got to Charles Whitefield Chadwick (b. 1954). Typed as an "academic" in the liner notes, the label hardly accounts for the high spirits, cheeky humor, & the ease with which he incorporates a vernacular musical language. This Quartet now strikes the ears as related to Ives' First Symphony, which has a bolder harmonic language & is more entertaining, yet both make a similar overall impression.
Charles Martin Loeffler (b. 1861) used a motif from Gregorian chant in composing his elegiac Music for Four Stringed Instruments in memory of his Victor Chapman, a pilot killed in World War One. It's a worthy work from tragic decade that inspired so many memorable memorials.
The pretty andante in Henry Hadley's nicely-crafted Piano Quintet could have come from the Paris Conservatoire.
Even The four brief pieces "as originally written for open strings" & attributed to Benjamin Franklin are amusing novelties; someone put effort into making them.
One would not mistake the Kohon Quartet for The Emerson, but on these late-Sixties recordings they perform with enthusiasm & committment. The Kohon premiered the complete Ives 1st Quartet in performance (1957) & on vinyl (1964, Vox), & they received the Grand Prix du Disque in 1964 for their recording of the Alban Berg String Quartet #3. Although most of these compositions are now available elsewhere, Early American String Quartets is a very good sampler.
Early American String Quartets.......2002-11-23
A great CD of rarely heard music. The energy and raw edgyness of the performance is compelling. It's not an over-processed sound, instead it's very real. Highly recommended!
Buy this for the repertoire, not the performances........2002-09-22
Fascinating exploration of now forgotten American composers. The program notes are well written and informative. Unfortunately the performances rarely rise above an undergraduate, state-school level, and often sink below. The recorded sound one dimensional and the quartet sounds as if they play on plywood instruments. However, if you're researching repertoire, this is an important recording, and hopefully these beautiful pieces will be visited by greater artists in the near future!

Praise and a Caveat.......2004-04-29
How to describe the chamber music of Arthur Foote? In terms of sound production, these are post-Brahmsian works, with a touch of Wagnerian chromaticism and the clean, open textures of late Dvorak. But in terms of melodic contour, the spirits of Mendelssohn and Schumann hover over both the Piano Quartet and the First String Quartet. This makes for an appealing combination of the forward-looking and the traditional, pretty much the case with American music at the time Foote was writing, though as an adherent of Wagner, he would have been rather advanced compared to, say, John Knowles Paine and others of his contemporaries. The Nocturne and Scherzo from 1918 is more advanced still and exhibits a French lightness, though I detect Mendelssohn again in the dancing Scherzo. That makes sense; nobody did scherzos better.
This is another useful issue in the Naxos series devoted to Foote's chamber music. The playing of the Da Vinci Quartet and of James Barbagallo and Jeani Foster is admirable, and I have nothing but praise for their work. The fly in the ointment here is the recording, specifically that of the Nocturne and Scherzo. Though the album cover swears up and down the recordings were all made in the same hall at the University of Denver, the warmth and immediacy accorded the two quartets is nowhere in evidence. Instead, the sound has a hollow, chilly quality that is ugly in the extreme. If I knew nothing about this recording and was told it came from the early fifties, I'd have no reason to doubt it.
So while musically this disc is a thorough winner, I think, like me, you'll be so turned off by the recording of the Nocturne and Scherzo that you won't go there very often.
Music I listen to again and again........2001-12-14
This isn't important or innovative music, it's just beautiful. I play all three volumes of Foote's Naxos discs quietly at work again and again, and never tire of them.
Nothing ground-breaking, but simply wonderful music........2001-10-26
Arthur Footes music was fairly conservative. For most people, this means his music is lovely and easy to listen to. For modernists, this might be a bit of a dull CD, but for everyone else, the music on this CD is probably the reason you listen to classical music.
Melodic, lyrical, energetic, and even inventive (within the bounds of classical harmony) are words which could describe the music on this Cd.
The performances and the recording are impeccable to my ears.
