First you have to like Bartok. Not everyone enjoys the 20th century extention of classical music. If you do like Bartok and want to hear his violin compositions - then buy this CD and hear a true master at work.

Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06
The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.
As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.
However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.
But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.
My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.
Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

Underpriced.......2006-12-19
It is incredible to me that I was able to purchase ten discs of probably the single greatest violinist of the century tackling immortal masterpieces for less than the cost of a utility bill.
You are thinking, "where's the catch?" Well, there is none. The transfers are excellent, the performances, of course, are superb. The only corner-cutting to be found was in the packaging, but even that was more than sufficient.
All these riches made me greedy, though. I wish there was Bartok 2 as well as 1, same with Szymanowski. I wish there was Khatchaturian. But how spoiled I am to be complaining! There is so much here to be enjoyed, from the crags of Szymanowski and the peaks of Beethoven to the cool, dark valleys of Chausson. If you only ever buy one violin box set, buy this one.
Superb survey of one of the all-time greatest violinists.......2005-08-28
We haven't been exactly short on releases by the great David Oistrakh, whether in the LP days or on CD. The trouble was that his recorded legacy - one of the most extensive in history by any violinist - has been made accessible through a multitude of labels, often in a haphazard fashion, and even more often for a very short time. The arrival of this new 10 CD-box has to be saluted for its effort to group a splendid selection of live recordings by Oistrakh made in the USSR between 1939 and 1968 with the Moscow Philharmonic, the Leningrad Philharmonic and the USSR Radio Symphony Orchestra, with some of the foremost conductors of the day (Alexander Gauk, Kirill Kondrashin, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Kurt Sanderling).
Undoubtedly, collectors will already have the majority of the recordings presented here (although a lot is no longer available), but this box covers all the great concertos and as a survey of the art of "King David" it is presently unbeatable.
The sound quality is variable, of course, but totally acceptable regarding the age of some of the documents.

Customer Reviews:
The all-time best performances of Bartok's piano pieces.......2006-04-17
There is no doubt in my mind, that this exceptional
release from PHILIPS crystalized in a music hall,
the composer's true intentions when the pieces were
developed and completed.
The performances, indeed, are immaculate on CD1,
in terms of the piano pieces, and surpass clearly
in matters of musicians' performances, ability
and the recording engineers' ability as compared
to the Hungaroton lunch box available elsewhere
(also very good, yet better on some opus than others.)
In regards to the second CD, the Concerto for Orchestra
is breathtaking and exceptional in its musical execution.
The listening will be astounded as to how so much value was
put together on a single 2 CD release, at such an affordable price.
Still a contender.......2002-05-03
This is not only a great Bartok collection but an outstanding value, with a lot of music packed onto two discs.
While I do love Pollini's thunderous, hammering version of the First Piano Concerto (with Abbado and Chicago), this one is perhaps better balanced. Kovacevich is superb in all three of these pieces, and the orchestral accompaniment, led by the brilliant Sir Colin Davis, is terrific. Henryk Szeryng is also in spectacular form in the Violin Concerto, playing with great feeling, not to mention the sheer beauty of the sound of his instrument. His partners here are Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw, one of the great conductor/orchestra teams ever.
And after all these fireworks, we still get an arresting performance of the Concerto for Orchestra, showing off Haitink and the Concertgebouw at their most precise and luminous. A confession up front: I have about a dozen versions of this piece, including the brand-new one from Chailly with the same orchestra, which is certainly spectacular. I would also hate to give up recordings by Solti and Chicago (not to mention Solti and the London Symphony Orchestra), the great Cleveland Orchestra with Christoph von Dohnanyi, and Dutoit with Montreal, whose technicolor reading works very well. I also treasure the vivid, fiery interpretation from Mariss Jansons and the Oslo Philharmonic.
Even considering all of these, this performance from the mid-1960's still sounds excellent. And again, it gives an exciting glimpse of the quality of music-making by Haitink and this orchestra during that period.
A great recording AND a bargain.
a Bartók feast.......2001-04-02
If you like Bartók, you'll love this, and if you just want to round out your classical collection with one CD of his, this is the one ! You'll get over 2 1/2 hours of superb performances in one 2-disc jewel case.
Piano concertos # 1 and # 2 are difficult to listen to at first if you're not used to this type of music...Bartók wrote these pieces for himself to perform, and he must have enjoyed a challenge. The speed and complexity are mind-boggling. # 3 is a much easier ride...written shortly before his death (he wrote this one for his wife to perform), it's much more melodic and gentle on the ears. Stephen Kovacevich is brilliant as the soloist in all 3 pieces, and they're conducted masterfully by Colin Davis.
My favorite in this collection is the 2nd violin concerto, and this is a lyrical, beautiful rendition of this gorgeous composition. Henryk Szeryng's performance is exquisite, and it's wonderfully conducted by Bernard Haitink, who also does the final piece, Bartók's most famous and most often played, the rousing "Concerto for Orchestra".
Best Performance of Bartok piano concertos.......1999-07-10
Unfortunately I have never heard Donohoe/Rattle recording on Bartok piano concertos, but I've heard Andras Schiff on teldec, Maurizio Pollini (No.1&2 only) on DG, Yefim Bronfman on Sony, and Martha Argerich (No.3 only) on EMI, so far. Among these seemingly splendid recordings, this recording by then-young Kovacevich is a really best-buy. I feel he gives sometimes a boring performance and shows a little bit poor techniques especially recently, but here his performance is very fresh and filled with the musical momentum.

It's handy to have two of the 20th century's greatest violin concertos together on one disc, especially in such fine performances. The somewhat astringent but dance-inspired Stravinsky, in his neo-classic mode, dates from 1931. Viktoria Mullova invests it with virtuoso flair, her lean tone perfectly fitting the brittle, skittish outer movements, broadening for the melodically rich Aria movements. The Bartók gets as committed a reading, Mullova playing with rhapsodic exuberance and the orchestra matching her for color and energy. Mullova sings the delicate lyrical theme that opens the Andante tranquillo movement with intense inwardness. Esa-Pekka Salonen's sympathetic conducting makes this a partnership to treasure. --Dan Davis

Splendid Performances of the Stravinsky and Bartok Violin Concertos from Mullova etc........2007-04-18
Viktoria Mullova is without question, among our finest solo violinists, but hers is a career that is relatively little known in the United States, in stark contrast to the ample popular and critical acclaim she's received in Europe. Her 2000 Philips recording of the Stravinsky and Bartok 2nd violin concertos should have won additional acclaim for her here, but sadly, it's been ignored, in stark contrast to other, more popular recordings from violinists as diverse as Itzhak Perlman and Hilary Hahn, for example. Mullova is one soloist who opts for adhering as closely to the composer's wishes as possible, opting for exuberant emotional playing only when it is demanded of her in these scores. inded, her performance of the Stravinsky violin concerto is most consistent with someone performing one of Mozart's violin concerti (A comparison which is most apt given the neo-classical style of Stravinsky's work.), in which she emphasizes a lean, bright tone to her playing, which sounds almost whimsical, especially in the Aria (2nd and 3rd) and Capriccio (4th) movements. In stark contrast, her performance of the Bartok second violin sounds a bit more brash, indeed bold, but here she emphasizes a more muscular-sounding tone from her violin. In conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and a chamber orchestra-version of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, she has sympathetic partners, who provide nuanced, understated, and yet, still elegant playing to her splendid solos in each concerto. Having enjoyed immensely both her recent Beethoven violin concerto recording with John Eliot Gardiner and his period instrument band and a much earlier recording that's sadly out of print of her performances of the Sibelius and Tchaikovsky violin concertos with Seiji Ozawa conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra, I am delighted to recommend this 2000 recording of hers as among the best I've heard of either the Stravinsky or Bartok 2nd violin concertos.
Two Favorite 'Modern' Concerti Magnificently Performed.......2006-05-21
It is so refreshing to note that these two 20th century concerti are now considered staples of the repertoire of the major orchestras. Both of them are not only inventive and demanding, but they are also simply beautiful music!
Viktoria Mullova is a perfect match for these works. Her technique is dazzling while being more concerned with the composer's ideas than her own. In the Violin Concerto in D major by Stravinsky she is as brisk and perky as any artist on record. Her control over the dynamics and the phrasing fit like a glove.
In the Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor of Bela Bartok she sings the elegant opening movement with all the passion it demands, and yet in the second movement her technical virtuosity is cheeky and assured. In both of these works Mullova is partnered with the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group as conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen: finer collaboration would be difficult to imagine. The LA Phil New Music Ensemble is merely a reduced form of the LA Phil and sound is lushly resonant where called for and tightly attentive when the speed and accuracy of the collaborative portion are paramount. Salonen knows this repertoire well and molds the soloist and orchestra into a finely honed whole. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, May 06
Sweeter in both concertos than what we're used to.......2006-01-14
The Amazon reviewer, like almost every critic before him, trots out "astringent" to describe the Stravinsky violin concerto, written in 1931, the prime of his neo-clasical period. Mullova and Salonen conquer the cliche with a sweet-toned performance that dances and chirps light-heartedly. Mullova doesn't take the opportunity to dig into the music; she is content to be part f the contrapuntal weave as the most important thread. On her own terms, it's the first Stravinsky concerto performance I would call charming.
The Bartok Second Concerto is a considerably more significant masterpiece. This is a work where astringency applies, along with a touch of the barbaric. But Mullova goes her own way again--she is warm and lyrical throughout. In fact, the miraculous thing about her style in general, now that I know it fairly well--is how she can keep one's interest without much external show. She uses beauty of tone and sensitive phrasing in the best way possible, to bring across deeply felt musical instincts. I would rate her the most musical violinist now before the public, despite my high regard for Vengerov and Shaham, both of whom resemble Mullova in style. Excellent sound, by the way, and the LA Phil. plays with panache and bite in the Bartok, staying well on the side of refinement.
challenging and enjoyable.......2005-10-14
I am generally a fan of romantic era music. I borrowed this from the library and liked it more than I expected I would given its modernist composers. Both pieces are spiky and harmonically challenging and would not be enjoyable for those intolerant of all dissonance. The playing is really good. I liked the sharpness of the solo violin and the quality of her vibrato-- varies some depending on the ongoing content and shifting mood. The Bartok piece with its three movement lay-out is perhaps the more traditional of the two in general outline but I found its harmonies just a bit more difficult. The mix favors the soloist but LA provides good color. The sound is good.
Absolutely Fabulous!.......2003-10-29
Ever since I heard the recording of the Bartok concerto (with the original ending) by Mark Kaplan on Koch, I have listened to all of the recordings of this ending. I have no reservations at all in saying that I prefer the original ending. All of the conductors (Lawrence Foster, Michael Gielen, Leonard Slatkin and Esa-Pekka Salonen) play it for all its worth-and to me, it's worth a lot. I can see why Bartok published this ending. It is true, though, that it should say on the CD case that the original ending is used (which is also the case on the Tetzlaff/Gielen recording.)This is my favorite available recording of this version, as the Zuckerman/Slatkin recording is out of print. There is also room on this disc for the revised ending, which Zuckerman/Slatkin also do. All you have to do is program your CD player accordingly. As for the rest of the performance, it is absolutely fabulous. Mullova's tone never falters, and she is expressive where possible and she is backed to the hilt by Salonen and the LA Phil. The sound is gorgeous, with a very realistic bass drum. Soft playing is beautiful and loud sections are very powerful. As for the Stravinsky, this piece is foolproof, in my opinion. Every recording I have heard of this piece (Perlman/Ozawa, Stern/Stravinsky,Chung/Previn, Gitlis and now, Mullova and Salonen) is very well done. The spirit is certainly there, and Mullova certainly can play her violin well. This cd is recommended with much enthusiasm!!

We may never know why Bartók suppressed his First Violin Concerto and reused the two movements in other contexts. He may just have been dissatisfied with the piece, or it may have evoked painful memories of the violinist Stefi Geyer, for whom he wrote it when he was in love with her. It's fascinating early Bartók but not representative of the composer's best. The Second Concerto, on the other hand, is one of Bartók's masterpieces. It has seldom if ever been heard in better circumstances, with one of Hungary's best violinists giving a fervent and extremely sympathetic performance, very well backed up by the fine conductor and orchestra, in vividly recorded sound. Naxos's annotator doesn't seem to realize that the second movement of the Second Concerto is in theme-and-variations form, but otherwise this production could hardly be improved--a magnificent bargain for the price. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
one of the best i've heard!.......2006-05-01
in terms of balance between soloist and orchestra i think this naxos cd is one of the best!tight performance and very transparent.i can heard parts in the orchestra that usally are muddied up.In terms of the soloist his sound is "silky" not "honkey" and his feel and exacution are as good as anyone.
thats my opinion anyway and i hope this helps.
Colourful Bartok violin concerto performance.......2000-12-13
Gyorgy Pauk's performance of Bela Bartok Second Violin Concerto, under the direction of Antoni Wit and with the Polish National Orchestra, is one of the best I have listened to. No exaggerated, cold, intellectualism, but a charming sense of the color of violin phrasing, give to this Concerto a smooth reading, giving space to all shades of the popular origin of Bartok's music well conveyed by his fellow citizen, the violinist. Pauk's Massart Stradivari sings through all the work, covering the technical difficulties of it as if they were ordinary passages.

Classic Recordings Available Now.......2000-06-09
Originally this recordings were released in separated LP's, but now they are available in this two records set. This compilation is a true right guess for Sony. Concert for Two Pianos and Percussion is a orchestral arragement for Bartok himself of his famous Sonata. Bernstein and soloists stand out each colour and pitch of this concert, though the orchestral part is discreet in this opus. Director obtains to make bright drums, cymbals and xylophone parts. Second Piano Concert(with Philippe Etremont) is a interesting work that merges neoclasicist aproach with folk elements. Soloist piano is accompanied only for horns in the first movement. Strings appears in the slow movement and sustain an interesting fight with the percussion. The full orchestra blows up only at the final part. Bartok's Third Concert is his most easy listening work. Impressionistic piano music with ravelian influence, but the folk fundamental is alive even. The Second Violin Concert was the bartokian answer to the Schoenberg School. This a vibrant and superb concert that require a skilfull violinist. Bernstein-Stern version is legendary and own feeling and ease and can be compared to other current recordings (Mutter, Pasquier or Shaham). This one worth for performance of slow movements.I think Bernstein found himself at one's ease in the adagios and lentos, his true feeling ran really here. To hear this slow movements is an impresive and moving experience. He always searched to stand out more sounds and effects of the orchestra than run with the timepiece. Music showed his true hertbeat. Bernstein, New York Philarmonic and his guests gain to hande the hard rythms and pulsations of this main works. Ten stars fot this CD!
