This DVD is spectacular. Andre Rieu is absolutely fascinating to listen to and the costumes of the orchestra as gorgeous. Well worth every penny.

First of all, why call this recording
"Fiesta"? only for the first four latin-american
works? because the rest of the cd is of
German music.I you want a real "Fiesta"
disc, I recomendation is that disc
of Keith Lockhart, is much more fun and
much more in a fiesta spirit than this one.

Simply Breathtaking !.......2000-05-14

I have always been a lover of classical music, but had never been truly introduced to the waltz until my wonderful father sent me this CD. After one time through it...I was in love. The romance...the feeling...the images of days gone by. Ladies in long, flowing gowns, men in black tails and white gloves...swirling around a ballroom floor. It's all right there for you to hear. Just lovely. My personal favorite is Song of Vilja, composed by Lehar. I think this to be the most beautiful piece of music ever written. This collection is a must for any lover of the classics....but for waltz enthusiasts, it is Heaven !

I am a great fan of Andre Rieu and his Orchestra and this in possibly their best. I changd the CD's in the changer in my vehicle about once a week but this one usuallly occupies the honored number one spot for months at a time.

A wonderful find for any lover of Viennese music, particularly of the "Silver Era" of operetta. Great renditions of operetta fare by Strauss, Lehar, Kalman, Stolz and Benatzky. Also charming Viennese songs, such as "Die Engeln Kommen auf Urlaub Nach Wien," "Meine Mutterl war eine Weanerin," and other "heuriger" wine garden favorites. The whole thing is a delight!

I know it's heresy to say this, but this music hasn't been sung so beautifully by a tenor since the great Fritz Wunderlich.

What is it about Jerry Hadley that no matter what he sings, he seems to be just right for the music.

Oh, yeah - I forgot. It's because he is a fabulous musician and probably the most underrated singer in the world today.

After the War, He was Musical Conductor for Many Musicals and Plays, Primarily Those of Sir Noel Coward. Boring, sad.......2007-04-29

This isn't quite "music" - it's closer to the kind of bloodless, overproduced orchestral music made popular in the 50s and 60s for older people who lacked a background in the classics, yet enjoy sentimental easy listening. This sort of thing has long been replaced by the likes of easy rock and easy listeing jazz, though it's possible that there are still listeners who haven't been exposed to much else, or otherwise have depressed standards in their popular music. Even Lawrence Welk had more variety and personal style in his presentation of music for older people.

This isn't even nostalgic anymore - just dull.

Mantovani's Music is the Best Ever!.......2005-10-13

This is a wonderful three-CD compilation of some of the best original recordings made by the Grand Master of Light Orchestral music. But it also contains an added bonus: one of the CD's reproduces in its entirety the 1960 LP "Operetta Memories" which, although hard to find on CD, is by far one of Mantovani's finest albums of sound artistry which charted in the top 40 for 3 months in 1961. Today's marketing teams might have entitled this LP, "Strauss Waltzes ..And More" because it followed a few years after the phenomenally successful stereo LP recording of Strauss Waltzes (1958) and included the great studio version of "the hymn to champagne" Die Fledermaus Overture, and another Mantovani concert favorite, the Gypsy Baron Waltz, also known as the Sweetheart Waltz which has the Blue Danube running right through the melody as only the genius of Mantovani could create. The "more" is represented by extraordinary arrangements of popular operetta music by Franz Lehar and Emmerich Kalman. Mantovani's inventive sounds and synchronized strings are nothing short of spectacular on Kalman's Gypsy Princess Waltz and Lehar's Count of Luxembourg Waltz and Merry Widow Waltz. All ten tracks are time-honored melodies that you will keep you humming and remembering how incomparable the Mantovani sound is and will always be. Stephen Hough plays with such heart that it's amazing he's still in one piece. His mastery of both lyrical and athletic genres is incredible. His recordings never fail to move me.

While not as well known to the world at large, Stephen Hough is well known among pianists. He's had the knack for finding music that has been neglected and bringing it to light. The music on this CD is a collection of gems -- whose luster Hough brings to light. If you enjoy piano music, this is a "must have" disc.

Some anthologies, become tiresome. Not this one. This is an album you can put on and listen to -- and then listen to the whole disc again...and again. Then I've gone back and listened to some individual tracks still again. The music is compelling, and the performances are masterful.

Let's hope for another disc such as this from the great Stephen Hough.

Exquisite,elegant,nostalgic pieces we seem to have ignored.......2001-01-02

If you have thought the loftier magnetic emotive fields of postmodernity, its conceptual excesses as having abandoning the virtues of obvious enchantments,contentment and reveries as flowing backwards this selection here is an ardent affirmation. All the selections are a celebration of the lost world of piano elegance, of a deeply thought through timbral curiosity reserved for the character piece. We often have simply placed on the shelves of music history these elegant particles of emotion in search for loftier weightier heights via the symphony or concerto. I dare say that time has been wasted. The sentimental the lost time is here evidenced in all these selections, Schubert/Liszt Soirees de Viene easily transports one back, nostalgically for we are escaping here the turmoils of the Hapsburg and Hollenzollerns kingdoms. Likewise the ardent piano composer Leopold Godowsky here his "Alt Wien" is like a New Years celebration. You will find neglected parts of the repertoire as well here pursued by Hough. The Moszkowski is like a crosshanded tribute to Scarlatti, little impeccably crafted textures and pianistic colours are here in Etincelles. Hough's arrangement of Kalman's "Was weiss ein nie gekusster Rosenmund" is simply for seriouslovers of any persuaion, like Marlene Dietrich's "I am driven to you like a moth to a flame". Hough plays all this music with the visionary reserve the music needs, I can easily see this music being romanticized where certain chord progressions certain emotive inflections at the ends of phrases,are(rubatisized) milked for all their worth. Hough here keeps/maintains a discipline.

The character pieces here of the Russian soul has also been neglected,We wanting the East to only join the West in loftier subject matter. Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky,in pairs of Humoresques have inspired memorable experiences based on simple melodies. There are as ever bit as a challenge to create as their colossol concertos. It is a skill of a different sort,but one just as vigorous creativily and challenging.

Delightful!.......2007-01-19

What a beautful voice and such an artist. I've always loved Wunderlich's voice and this album was such a delightful surprise to happen across. The Pearl Fishers' duet with Herman Prey is spectacular--it would be even better than Bjoerling/Merrill if it were in the original French!

A Great and Varied Collection.......2005-12-19

Fritz Wunderlich is a name that is familiar to opera buffs, at least those who enjoy the great singers of the past, but his name is not as familiar with the general public. It probably would have been, had it not been for a tragic and fluke accident that claimed his life. For those who are familiar with this great tenor, he's a beloved musician that makes listeners wonder what could have been.

Wunderlich's voice is one that can be light and airy at times, yet it can also have a dramatic intensity. This two disc set includes a variety of pieces that display Wunderlich's wide range and great vocal talent. His excerpts from Mozart are perhaps his strongest. So often the tenor roles in Mozart operas are cast with performers who are agile and can reach the higher notes, but their voices are somewhat weak. Wunderlich shows just how beautiful these arias can be. The same holds true for his arias from EUGENE ONEGIN and the pieces from well known operettas. His "Au Fond De Temple Saint" performed with Hermann Prey (a dream team pairing if there ever was one) is close to the Bjorling/Merrill rendition. We see his versatility in the excerpt from Haydn's CREATION and the live performance of "Di Rigori Armato" from DER ROSENKAVALIER is a treat and allows the listener to compare his live and studio recordings. The bonus DVD has a few slight flaws, but we see, at least in the scenes from THE BARBER OF SEVILLE that he not only has a wonderful voice but a good stage presence as well.

Most of the tracks are performed in German, even the Bellini, Bizet, and Verdi tracks, as was the case in many of the recordings of famous German singers. This may detract at first, especially of we expect to hear gorgeous French singing and it comes out, well German sounding. Still, it's a wonderful set with great variety and shows us what we missed in this tenor whose career had just begun.

MAGIC is a good word to describe Fritz Wunderlich.......2005-11-08

Magic is a good word to describe Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), and if you aren't already familiar with his work, you'll see why when you experience this CD.

Many of the tracks are not new to CDs: I'd say 50% of them are also in the "Art of Fritz Wunderlich" set (DG, 7 CDs), including Handel, Mozart, Bellini, and other opera arias. There are 3 tracks from "Don Giovanni" which I had not encountered elsewhere, and a scene from Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" + 5 Strauss Lieder (with orchestra) not previously released in recent years.

Wunderlich was never less than the very best, and here is no exception. The bonus DVD has almost 30 minutes of scenes of Wunderlich (Count Almaviva) in Rossini's "Barber of Seville", sung in German with Hermann Prey (Figaro) and Erika Koth (Rosina) from a 1959 black and white TV production, in very good mono sound; and two scenes from Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin", also sung in German, and with a young Brigitte Fassbaender (a little more hiss but very good, full, rich mono sound). The Rossini is available from English sources, and hopefully will be available in the US soon.

Like conductor Karl Bohm (1894-1981), I'm going to try to get as much Fritz Wunderlich material as I can find, CD or DVD, as is practical (and even when it isn't!).

VIENNAFEST A FEAST FOR THE EARS!.......2000-11-07

Erich Kunzel is the baton and the heart of the Cincinnati Pops. I am fortunate enough to live in the Cincinnati area and have seen and heard the Pops in person. It is an awesome experience. However, if you cannot get to Cincinnati or to one of his on-tour performances, the Telarc CDs are as close to live as you can get! Viennafest is no exception. The care that is so evident on every Cincinnati Pops release is meticulous. The waltzes and marches are melodious and true to the theme of the CD. I eagerly await the release of each Erich Kunzel CD--BRAVO!

A Must For Operetta Lovers.......2006-11-04

This is the third volume of a trio of CDs containing songs and melodies from some of the most popular operettas from famous composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The operetta had its roots in Vienna, where it was brought to popular recognition by such musical giants as Johann Strauß, Jr.; Franz Lehár; and Emerich (Imre) Kálmán. The three volumes of The Best of Operetta, available through Amazon.com, contain some of the most beloved melodies by these great composers, plus works of Robert Stolz and Carl Zeller. No operetta collection would be complete without all three of these volumes. Operetta lovers will recognize such works as Die Fledermaus, Gräfin Mariza, The Merry Widow, The Land of Smiles, The Gypsy Baron, and others which are found in the three volumes of The Best of Operetta.

Volume 3, which is the subject of this review, contains 14 beloved operetta melodies from the pens of Johann Strauß, Franz Lehár and Emerich Kálmán, interpreted by the magnificent voices of sopranos Ingrid Kertesi and Zsuzsa Csonka and tenor János Berkes and accompanied by the Hungarian Operetta Orchestra under the baton of László Kovács.

All three volumes are accompanied by a booklet with bountiful information about the operetta in general, the composers represented in these CDs, and the songs contained in each volume. You will find the English translations very helpful.

A knowledge of German is not required to appreciate the beautiful music contained in these three volumes. A superlative collection of music & song for any lover of Viennese music. It includes the words to many songs that people hum, but these songs are even more wonderful if you know the marvelous words! They are clever, sentimental, and delicious! They're also in the original German and in good English translations. We bought our copy of Volume III in Vienna a few weeks ago and were delighted to find that Volumes I and II are available from Amazon.com for a song--so we've just ordered them! The performances by young artists and the recordings match the great content!

Well re-mastered collection of historical recordings.......2007-05-14

This 2 CD set gives a rather complete overview of Richard Tauber's recordings for voice and orchestra made between 1919 and 1946. I assume that most listeners will be attracted to only one of the two CDs, as the musical material contained in the discs aims at different audiences. Fans of opera, like myself, who value Tauber as one of the greatest lyrical tenors of the last century, will enjoy his legendary renditions of Mozart arias like "Il mio tesoro" (Don Giovanni) or "Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön" (Die Zauberflöte) on CD 1. As a lyrical tenor Tauber to this day has been rivalled in the German-speaking world only by Fritz Wunderlich. Those listeners, on the other hand, who like Tauber for his interpretations of Lehár operetta and popular evergreens like "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" or "Ich küsse Ihre Hand, Madame" will be more than happy with CD 2.

Without intending to offend anybody's musical preferences, I still feel that waltzing along in Viennese dialect was not what Tauber's musical talent and mastery of voice were actually asking for. I, therefore, regret that in his later years he increasingly moved away from singing "grand opera" towards performances of lighter music.

Keeping in mind that the latest recordings of the present set were made in 1946 (two years before Tauber's premature death from lung cancer), nobody should expect high-fidelity stereo sound. However, all songs were carefully re-mastered, making the most of the original material, e.g. reducing background noise to a minimum and lifting Tauber's voice to the centre (sometimes making the orchestra barely audible). For all fans of the great Austrian tenor - whatever their musical orientations may be - this 2 CD set is a must.

Stravinsky the Composer, not Stravinsky the Conductor.......2006-09-18

It is a pretty good collection, lots of music from Stravinsky's entire carreer, but one must keep in mind that Stravinsky was a brilliant composer, and not a commanding maestro. You will not necessarily be getting the best recordings of these works. For example, something like the Boulez/Cleveland Rite of Spring is far superior to those in this collection. He is a vastly better conductor, and is much more capable of making the orchestra perform Stravinsky's intentions than Stravinsky is. All in all, however, I am more than glad I own this set.

Staggering! All the Stravinsky I'll ever need!.......2006-05-20

While I had heard some Stravinsky compositions prior to my purchase, this was the first (and only) Stravinsky material I have ever owned. As a young music enthusiast, the draw to me was to hear these pieces as Stravinsky conducted them and to get so many of them at such a great price, not to have the original jackets for the purpose of reminiscing. So, as someone who needed a good jump start into the works of Stravinsky (by Stravinsky), this set has proven totally invaluable. And while more information could have been packed onto these cds, I do appreciate how closely these discs have stuck to the original releases. I don't know about the portion of Petroushka which some reviewers claim is missing (as I don't know any other version), but I was totally blown away at hearing this version of Petroushka anyhow. In all, for whatever faults some sticklers may find here or there with this set, the value of this material collected in such a way (and at such a price) by far outweighs any possible faults.

Magnificent!.......2006-03-02

A great collection. There is simply no substitute for hearing Stravinsky as the great composer wanted to have his music played. Here is so much and also so varied a collection. I have been enjoying this set a great deal. One of the 20th century's greatest composers conducting his own compositions.

Where's my Petrushka?.......2003-08-01

The main reason I bought this box is because I was introduced to Stravinsky's Petrushka in the spring of 2003, and I loved it.
Along with Rite of Spring I think it's the most brilliant music Mr. Stravinsky ever wrote...so, I've been listening to the 34-minute long 1960 CSO recording of it at least once a day since I first heard it, naturally sort of memorizing it, but it didn't fit when I made this CD spin. The recording of Petrushka in this box is the VERY SAME RECORDING (1960) that I'd listened to, but it's cut to a suite! It's only 24 minutes long. You can tell it's obviously cut at certain points if you're familiar with the uncut version. 10 WHOLE MINUTES ARE MISSING FROM "PETRUSHKA!" I was (and still am) very disappointed by this.
Familiarizing myself with the rest of the discs was very fulfilling, though; I love the Ebony Concerto with the Columbia Jazz Combo featuring Benny Goodman...but the "suite-cut" of Petrushka made me paranoid...I can't be sure if anything else is edited or not...
There are 75 pages of notes in the booklet about the recordings but only 1/3 is in English.
The special multimedia feature disc is nothing much. With awful graphics it features the same notes as in the booklet, and there are lyrics for those who want to use the box for karaoke.
These 400 minutes of music (an average of 45 minutes per disc) could fit on only 5 CD's instead of 9, but it seems that this collection is made for nostaligs who will love watching and touching these tiny LP-jackets - after all, it is called the "Original Jacket Collection."
Incidentally, all of Stravinsky's recorded work which he conducted himself is not in this box. It is not at all complete; aside from the missing part of "Petrushka," his own reading of "Symphony in Three Movements" is missing (but available on CBS.)
Hats off to the man himself anyway. The music is brilliant, and considering that these recordings are 40+ years old, the sound quality is very good. Excellent stereophony on Rite of Spring!
It's a good thing that his music is still available and that people are offering refurbished products thereof. But if you love Petrushka like I do...buy the real thing...this just might disappoint you...
The 3 stars is a compromise of the music and the package; (5 stars for the music & its quality - 1 star for the package, choice of discs and--considering the price--somewhat weak linear notes.)

This 9 cd set is an historical one...more than half of Stravinsky's works are collected in this set. i clearly can say that there isn't any better recording for Stravinsky's works. especcialy first released USA's national anthem and a 12 tone work "Fanfare for two Trumpets" are remarkable.and we can also mention that some noises during the recording procces (i.e: Stravinsky's turning the page of the partition) gives a different taste to the listener. This is a real golden box of music.
