It's all good!.......2003-07-17

This is a fantastic collection of Purcell's greatest choral works, wonderfully sung by the Oxford Camerata. My favourites: 'Jehova, quam multi sunt' (a fine example of Renaissance-inspired Baroque choral writing), 'Lord, how long wilt thou be angry?', and the more well-known 'Hear my prayer, O Lord'. However, the entire album is full of authentic little treasures which continue to marvel. A great recording for any classical collection.

A bargain CD for lovers of English choral music.......2000-02-28

In addition to Henry Purcell's edifying choral anthems, this CD also contains his music composed on the occasion of Queen Mary's death. Listen to this music with your eyes closed and imagine the royal funeral procession to Westminister Abbey on that cold March morning in 1695 (a place that a 36 year old Purcell himself would rest 8 months later); it is an epiphany! For movie buffs, the funeral march (Z. 860A; played wonderfully by the Oxford Camerata brass) was featured in Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange". If you enjoy Purcell's works or choral music in general, you should definitely make a modest purchase and get this wonderful CD for your collection!

If you like choral music, or even if you don't, buy this CD. Purcell's music is made more beautiful then ever by the Oxford Camernata. The feeling and flow of the songs effects you in many ways. This is a great CD.

Essential works from an essential composer.......2004-10-07

This volume contain the holy works of Purcell that are composed only for continuo without orchestra. Thw anthems have a haunting immediacy without orchestra. If you can no afford all of the 11 volumes of Purcell, I recommend you buy this volume and Number 1.
Purcell died at a very young age. His output is a deep and important as that of Bach. The 3 volumes I have listened to have demonstrated Purcell's ability to word paint gorgeously all of his texts.
As many of these volumes as you can afford belong in the collection of every classical music lover.

While some of the works are superior to others the entire set is great in the realm of production. Mostly all of these pieces are just superb and if you are someone who enjoys English Baroque then you absolutely MUST purchase these cds. If you enjoy complex, melancholic or heroic music then I urge you to purchase this cd and the rest of the volumes in the set...you won't be disappointed.

Excellent performance (not everybody will like this music).......2000-06-13

Henry Purcell is regarded as the most gifted of England composers of all times. His genius reveals in all his music - ceremonial, operas, semi-operas, secular songs, religious and instrumental. This series of King conducting Purcell's anthems and services follows up the success of King's odes and welcome songs recordings. While all the performances in this series are excellent it's the quality of the music that counts and number 7 of this series arguably includes the best music. The booklet enclosed with King's notes is also very illuminating. The rating of four stars and not five is because not all admirers of purcell will enjoy this music as much as they enjoy his operas, semi-operas and wellcome songs as it's more on the melancholic side.

Liszt the Endorser.......2007-06-19

Volume 40 in Hyperion's Complete Music for Solo Piano of Liszt is a collection of Liszt rarities, mostly paraphrases and first versions of transcriptions and other original pieces. Leslie Howard's efforts with recovering rare, unpublished, and never-before-recorded works of Liszt are truly admirable. Some of these pieces are probably being played for the first time in the 20th century. Although there is nothing too profound here, these compositions are not worthless. On the contrary, I think this Volume features worthy salon pieces, bravura encores, and virtuosic paraphrases that should be performed more often today.

The major works on this recording are the Paraphrase and Humoreske on the song Gaudeamus igitur, which was often sung during graduations and academic festivals. Even Brahms used the music in his Academic Festival Overture. Liszt's treatment of the tune in his Paraphrase and also in his Humoreske is typical: resplendent embellishments and delightfully bombastic decorations. That is not to say that Liszt's compass doesn't include other improvisatory/compositional devices: fugal sections, Hungarian-flavored passages, glittering glissandi, and rip-roaring arpeggios. The next major piece on this Volume is the Grand Paraphrase on Giuseppe Donizetti's Marche for the Sultan Abdul Medjid-Khan. Giuseppe is of course the brother of the more famous Gaetano, and his march theme was apparently good enough to remain the Ottoman Empire's national anthem. Liszt composed this splendid paraphrase when his European tour brought him to Turkey; the music itself is bipolar, with its once dramatic and then amusing moments; it shows far more imagination than in the Gaudeamus igitur works. The presence of the first version of the Ballade No. 2 on this recording begs discussion. This is ostensibly one of Liszt's major works and its slight alterations (some parts played an octave higher, changes to the coda, etc.) do not hinder its expressive power. Howard plays with perfect tempo and evokes darkness, heart-melting tenderness and serious drama.

The other pieces worth mentioning are the transcriptions and elaborations of works from other composers. The Pezzini-Liszt "A Friendly Star Waltz" is innocuous and sweet. The "Seconda Mazurka di Tirindelli" is wonderfully melancholic and beautiful. I'm not familiar with the original music, but Liszt's polish and compositional hand definitely enhances the appeal of this ample (nearly 6 minute) piano piece. The transcriptions of pieces by totally obscure Russian composers like Alyabiev, Bulhakov, and Wielhorsky are presented here in their first versions, revealing Liszt's genuine interest in the music. The second versions are found here: Liszt: Arabesques - Russian and Hungarian Transcriptions. Alyabiev's "Le Rossignol" and Wielhorsky's "Lyubila ya" are exquisite gems, whose melodies are re-clothed with Liszt's agreeable pianistic touches. Bulhakov's "Galop russe" is a trifle, but according to Howard "the popularity of this piece at the time resulted in Liszt's second version appearing within months of the first." The first version of the Festmarsch is also a notable and lengthy piece (almost 8 minutes) with an endearing little march theme.

Bottom line: Liszt is not looking to prove anything with these pieces. With most of them being paraphrases and transcriptions, they are the products of his generosity; he is endorsing the music of these lesser-known composers. Liszt's Paraphrase of Gaudeamus igitur and the Donizetti march, along with the Seconda Mazurka, the three Russian transcriptions, and the Ballade No. 2 are substantial enough that I think this Volume deserves 4 stars. Almost all of these pieces are world premiere recordings, as well, which makes it savory.

Henry Purcell(1659-1695) 'looked like a Florentine prince, was hail-fellow-well-met in tavern and taproom, wrote for the church and also for the stage and salon, was in fact a most likeable young man, as well as a great Master of Musick'.
It is absolutely amazing,that apart from the funeral anthem 'Thou knowest Lord', Purcell has composed every piece that is here recorded by the time he had reached his 25th birthday. He was already composing by the age of eight. When he was only 18 he was appointed 'Composer in Ordinary' to the king and by the time he was 23 he was organist of the Chapel Royal.
The Englishness of Purcell's music is represented magnificently in these pieces, and his use of Italianate turns of phrase enliven the 'English' settings. Purcell's interest in foreign styles is best seen in the dozen of so 'orchestral' anthems that he wrote after 1683.
Popular as Purcell's church music evidently was during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, several of his finest anthems do not seem to have been known outside the Chapel Royal. None of his church music was ever printed, and our knowledge of it depends on the fortuitous survival of manuscript copies. How much of it-we may well wonder-has been altogether lost in the sands of time?
The selections on this disc are well-chosen and well-performed, as one would expect from the Choir of Trinity College,Cambridge, under the very capable direction of Richard Marlow. I have many of these pieces on other recordings, and this one fares very well by comparison!
