Product Description

Product Description:
Music of Robert Morris Robert Morris is presently chair of the composition department of the Eastman School of Music, where he is Professor of Composition and affiliate member of the theory and musicology departments. He is a recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Hanson Institute for American Music, the American Music Center and the American Council of Learned Societies. His music has been performed in North America, Europe, Australia, China, Taiwan and Japan. Morris has written music for a wide variety of musical forms and media. He has composed over 140 works including computer and improvisational music. Some of his output from the 1970's is influenced by non-Western music and uses structural principles from Arabic, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese and early Western musics. While such influences are less noticeable in more recent works, the temporal and ornamental qualities of Eastern music have permanently affected Morris' style. In addition to his music, Morris has written many articles and reviews that have appeared in scholarly music journals contributing to theories of musical analysis and aesthetics, compositional design, electronic and computer music, and Indian music. He is also co-editor of Perspectives of New Music.

The chorus is at center of Shaw's reading of the score, presumably the more lightly scored 1893 version that Fauré, himself created (Telarc does not specify). The account flows very well, and the work of both soloists is highly satisfying, particularly Judith Blegen's airy soprano in Pie Jesu. The recording dates from 1985-86 and is one of Telarc's best, with excellent presence overall and real bass in the organ. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Faure Requiem.......2007-05-10

A very professional performance.I used it to prepare for the performance of this number by our oratorial society. I wish we could do as well.

3 out of 5 stars The Faure is Great, Not so Much the Durufle.......2006-02-16

The Faure Requiem (Op. 48) in D minor is a soft, gentle requiem unlike the powerful Verdi, Berlioz, and Durufle. The delicate qualities of this requiem are captured beautifully on this recording.

The Durufle Requiem (Op. 9) is one of my most favorite compositions of all time and it is not performed well on this disc for one reason: the solos are sung by the choir and that is not what I want to hear when I want to hear Durufle's requiem. Piquemal's version is still my favorite and I recommend that over this one.

5 out of 5 stars French Choral Classics.......2005-11-30

This disk has set the standard for performing the settings of the Requiem mass by two great French masters, Gabriel Faure and Maurice Durufle. The Faure setting is an intimate one with occasional moments of tempestuousness. This particular recording features the more heavily orchestrated edition (for an excellent chamber version see the Cambridge Singers under John Rutter). Put in seven parts, additional features include two baritone solos and a lovely soprano solo. The choral parts are not difficult, but require a delicate touch with great articulation, all provided here. The harmonies gently shift with occasional color changes and chromatic mediant relationships. The concluding movement (In Paradisum) sums up the experience with a satisfying contemplative moment devoid of bombasticity. A masterwork not to be missed.

The Durufle Requiem is a horse of a different color. The rhythms and harmonies are not so classically straight-forward like the Faure; far from it. Not only do the rhythms constantly shift, the melodies aren't classically structured, but instead, quote and are reminiscent of chant, making the rhythmic changes seem natural. The harmonic setting is heavily steeped in church modes, but Durufle's lush orchestrations make this anything but old-fashioned. Much more thickly textured, Durufle doesn't fear to leap into occasional revelry and joyousness; Durufle has a knack for timing his climaxes just right, more moments of exuberance than Faure exhibited. This edition is the fully orchestrated version, and while there is a nice organ accompaniment edition, I much prefer the grandeur of the orchestra. Robert Shaw chooses not to have soloists, but instead have the choir parts sing the solos. This version is still highly exciting and lacks nowhere (unless you want soloists). You might want to choose to have an all Durufle choral CD (Michael Plasson in EMI classics is a good choice), but this pairing of two classics is an equally fine program.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus have not put out such a successful CD as in this 1987 digital Telarc classic. The sound is full and virile, the heightened sense of drama is apparent and can't be beat by any other recording, certainly not by another American choir. Nearly two decades after its release, this still remains the standard.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for amost every review, what does that tell you?.......2005-10-01

I'm not going to tell you about the phenominal audio quality of this CD ($300 head phones work best) or the culmination of the incredible artistic performance of the late Robert Shaw (master extraordinaire). However, I will mention that if you are looking for deep soul searching composition's who's performances faithfully match the composers ideal interpretation of their vision of the here-after, this is your recording.

Faure & Durufle being the earliest predicessors of todays contemorary music, lay a foundation of perfection that few composers can build upon, and even fewer can surpass. Don't buy the latest recorded version of these Requiems, buy Robert Shaw's version. I guarantee you won't want another. Gary Dissette-Denver Colorado

This is definately not your grandfather's versions of Mozart. The artists change up the instrumentation and creatively put new life in such classics of "Elvira Madigan", "Ruhe Sanft" and "Eine Kleine Nachmusik". Good enough for a listen if you want to hear someting new.

If you love Mozart, try this album. Interpreters such as Bela Fleck give us a chance to appreciate the enduring beauty of the music, and all of the selections are beautiful in their own way. Each of the pieces is too short for my taste, but that does allow for many different interpreters on the CD. I'll definitely buy the follow up to this album.

5 out of 5 stars This More-zart CD should be 10 stars out of five........1999-08-07

I have been listening to this CD for quite a while and I still like it. It never bores me. First, the transcriptions are done ingeniusly. Second, all the works are done by different musicians and thus the the play styles are all different. This is really QUITE A DIFFERENT More-zart. For example, Ruhe Sanft is an aria in 3/4, but it is beautifully transcribed in 4/4. At first listening, I didn't know what it was, but it sounded like I heard it before, and I couldn't figure it out. Only after I checked the song list and tried second careful listening, I was able to be aware that it was indeed "Ruhe Sanft mein holdes Leben". Every piece in this CD is beatiful. I am sorry that I can give only five stars. I will definitely give it 10 starts out of five. I wish there would be "A Different Mozart II".

    5 out of 5 stars Ownage.......2003-07-26

One of the reviews I read mentioned that the conductor here used too much of a dynamic range, had too much vigor, etc. etc.

I ask - how much does this person know about this piece (the Four Seasons)?

This CD is the best Vivaldi CD I've heard yet, and I've heard a good many. Most of them rush through the more peaceful parts without showing a hint of feeling, or drag through more vigorous parts like the musicians and conductor are bored. But this CD lets you enjoy each movement of each concerto and actually feel what's being portrayed in the music.

I believe some of the parts that were referred to as bombast, etc., were from Summer. Summer, as all the concertos in the Four Seasons, has passages that depict storms. The storms in Concerto 3, Movement 3 specifically, however, are extremely violent. It's even written in the sheet music, which I own, that the parts are supposed to be violent! And if you're following along with what the music is portraying, then it'll give you chills.

I recommend fans of Vivaldi's Four Seasons look up the poems that were recited before each concerto. The poems explain what is being portrayed in the music. Ie, in Spring, the section after the main theme, with many seemingly random trills and 16th note runs, represents birds singing and chirping. The fast section after it represents the arrival of a spring thunderstorm, and thunder and lightning. Later in the movement, the birds return and then the music drifts away to flowing fountains of fresh water.

The Four Seasons really is a beautiful and brilliant piece of work. I think it goes without saying that it's highly recommended.

    2 out of 5 stars He's not really a Baroque conductor.......2002-02-25

I hate having to give this CD a fairly low rating. However, the fact is, Bernstein is a master at 19th Century music (and 20th as well), but falls down in Mozart and in Baroque. This CD is no exception.

His conducting of The Four Seasons, is what you may expect from Bernstein. He conducts with vigor, bombast, intensity, and other elements (such as a large dynamic range) that one doesn't typically associate with Baroque music. He doesn't have a stately grace or even a slightly cold touch - both of which I feel are vital to correctly perform Baroque.

So, if Bernstein's approach is your cup of tea, then you should, by all means, buy this album. You will love it. However, if you are more of a purist or traditionalist, then you should turn your attentions elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars It captured my heart!.......1999-08-17

This is definitely the best version of the four seasons I've ever experienced. Bernstein takes full advantage of power of the orchestra and brings each season alive. I couldn't stop listening to "Summer" over and over again. There were also a few other titles that I wasn't really familiar with that made me a true fan of Vivaldi.

      Album Description

Berliners say New York's Rebecca Garfein is causing a revival of Reform Judaism in Germany; this mezzo-soprano is making history with her music, recorded in the country where her great -grandmother perished in the Holocaust. In 1997, she became the first female cantor to sing in a synagogue in Germany; where she performed as part of Berlin's International Jewish Cultural Festival; and this exquisite 1998 release captures that ground - (and stained-glass ceiling) - breaking moment. It contains Jewish songs and prayers in Hebrew and Yiddish, selections from the Book of Ruth and Song of Songs - liturgical music previously only chanted my male clergy - operatic in character, performed in what was once the women's gallery in the Oranienburger Strasse Synagogue before its destruction. This live performance was attended by Jews and non-Jews, women and men, together, shattering the historical separation of faiths and genders. Beautiful, significant, and highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected.......2006-01-21

Hmm... Ok, maybe it was not the best reason to want to buy this CD, but I heard one of the songs on it, Hashkiveynu, performed (partially) during an episode of the West Wing, and it sounded AMAZING (it was NOT the same cantor as on this CD). I am not Jewish and not even very spiritual, but I wanted to have that song in my collection.
I immediately searched the web for the info, got the name of the chant and found this CD. I almost purchased it without listening, when I found a different site, where they actually have rather long excerpts (2 min.) of most tracks, so I listened to them.
Boy, was I relieved and disappointed at once! Relieved that I didn't buy the CD and disappointed that I couldn't get the song I wanted (I was willing to buy a whole CD for just 1 song, that's how much it impressed me).
The song sounds very little like the one from the West Wing, although I do believe that the site where I found the info speficially pointed to this CD as having a recording of the same song used in the show. And I'm sorry to say it but the voice also doesn't hold a candle to the one used on the show - way too "operatic", as mentioned by many, and harsh and even unpleasant-sounding to me. It took all the charm and candor right out of the song (in the show, they had a much more natural voice do the song). I also agree that the choir does not mesh well with the soloist.
If anyone knows where and if I can purchase a recording of this song done by a different singer (if it can be the one from the West Wing, I'll be thrilled), please, let me know. In the meantime, I'm passing on this CD...

      5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2006-01-11

      What a voice...!

      5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Cantorial Performance.......2004-01-27

Cantor Rebecca Garfein has a magnificent voice which expresses the oft-overlooked nuances in the music she has chosen for this recording. Able to perform equally well in the metzo soprano and soprano ranges, the cantor delights the listener with thrilling high notes and sultry lower registers.

Organist-Choirmaster Arnold Ostlund, Jr. skillfully chooses registrations which enhance both the cantorial performance and the superb choral blend.

5 out of 5 stars Jewish songs and prayers beautifully sung!.......2004-01-18

Cantor Rebecca Garfein's Sacred Chants is a memorial tribute to the cultural and spiritual greatness of the pre-war German Jewish synagogue. Some of the numbers were composed by Jews on Jewish themes -- for example, Mah Tovu by Cantor Meir Finklestein or Ahavat Olam by Cantor Morris Barash. Other numbers were composed by non-Jews, but they express traditional Jewish values. Throughout, Cantor Garfein sings with love and passion in the spirit of her tradition. Additionally, the beautiful organ music is wonderful to hear for those of us who have enjoyed hearing organ music as part of our Reform Jewish liturgy.

3 out of 5 stars Good but is this Jewish?.......2004-01-07

I have to admit, it am in the process of converting and wanted a contemporary collection of Jewish music in the house. I was especially excited because it featured a female cantor. Unfortunately, I played this CD and it...reminded me of church not synagogue! Lovely for what it is though, with the opera voice, choir and organ music. Not quite what I expected.

I read in one of the reviews here that this soundtrack was recorded before the cast even went to Broadway, which makes my complaints with this CD understandable. The performances are quite lackluster. Susan Egan borders on forced-genuinity and at times sounds a bit too --I don't know -- like a voice for a Disney channel ad, for example, when she sings the line, "I love the funny way you stand out from the crowd" in "No Matter What". When the Beast is dying it's downright pacifying. I have seen clips of Susan's Belle live and she is amazing -- her voice much richer and natural as Belle and her acting superb. This CD does her no justice. Terrence Mann's voice isn't deep or powerful enough for my taste but he does a nice job conveying the Beast's despair with surprisingly effective gentleness. The orchestrations could be richer and just a tad faster.

5 out of 5 stars I Agree, Better than the Broadway Cast Recording........2007-05-20

I just want to say the performances are great in this London Cast Recording. As Belle, Julie-Alanah Brighten does a terrific job. Her vocals are beautiful; I especially like her rendition of "Home." I might get flamed for this, but I don't particularly enjoy Susan Egan's voice (although her "A Change in Me" is great), but that's not why I like Brighten's Belle. She just has a great voice, with good support and good interpretations of the songs. The rest of the cast is pitch-perfect as well. Burke Moses, who plays Gaston, sounds almost exactly like the Gaston in the movie. And I can't forget the orchestra, which has a great and full sound, with lots of energy. Just how I like it. The only thing is that there isn't "A Change in Me," because I really like that song!

5 out of 5 stars London's cast is even better than B'dway!!! That's pretty rare!.......2007-04-14

With the exception of CATS, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and LES MISERABLES, few of London's cast albums are superior to Broadway... however, Disney's BEAUTY & THE BEAST IS included in this category. Here, London's cast is more vibrant and fresh. I purchased the B'dway cast in Jan. (I had the audio cassette of it from back when it first opened my freshman year in high school) but I needed to upgrade to CD several years ago and now I finally got it. I listned to the B'dway version and was definitely pleased with the effort everyone put into it but after recently signing up for auditions to an upcoming local production of this show I was anxious to hear the London cast as well. I got it in the mail yesterday (Overstock has it for much less than Amazon) and I played it right away and everything about it was far better than the original. Terrence Mann (you may remember him as the stage manager from the movie verison of A CHORUS LINE) played the Beast on B'dway and his interpretation was more of a tortured Beast and in the bits of dialogue in certain songs he played him in a very Disney-esque way while Alasdair Harvey's was more dignified and his voice has more of a presence, making his portrayal more of the classic Beast I remember from my boyhood. B'dway's Susan Egan is also a very Disney-type of Belle with her little feminine giggle every now and than (i.e. NO MATTER WHAT and during the reading of KING ARTHUR & CAMELOT in the middle of HUMAN AGAIN) while London's Belle (my deepest apologies to everyone but I forgot her name and I don't have the CD on me at the moment) is the best Belle I've heard up to my penning this review... she definitely has a very British accent but here it works and in a London cast album what else would you expect? Her version of HOME is shortned however (the 2nd verse was comepletely cut: "Is this home? Is this what I must learn to believe in?" ...) but I like how she conveys Belle as a grown woman (again as the classic BEAUTY I grew up with) and not a blushing, sweet-sixteen archetype like Ms. Egan was. Many of you familiar with the B'dway album or who were fortunate enough to see the original cast on stage may be pleased to see the return of Burke Moses as Gaston on this version as well and the actor portraying Lefou holds nothing back with his brilliant Cockney accent. The definite standouts of the score are HOME (even though it is edited), IF I CAN'T LOVE HER (the ending always gives me the chills from both Mann and Harvey), HUMAN AGAIN (although I still prefer the film verison of this one) and of course, the title song (performed perfectly by PHANTOM's Mary "Mdme. Giry" Miller as Mrs. Potts).

I hihgly recommend this album to anyone who already has the B'dway version or to anyone who loves musical theater or Disney in general. It's definitely worth the purchase... just remember... get it at Overstock, Overstock, Overstock...

5 out of 5 stars Solid, Spirited Recording of a Great Musical.......2007-03-25

If you don't own the original Broadway recording of "Beauty," then this is the one to get. If you do, it's still an interesting addition. The voices here are well-trained, enthusiastic, and beautiful to listen to (Broadway's Terrence Mann sung a "tormented" Beast, but Alasdair Harvey has a more credible flair to his voice; actually, his dialogue, going by the CD, feels a little overstated, but his singing more than makes up for it). The orchestra sounds better as well, and Bruce Botnick has done an excellent recording (watch out for volume, though: this has some low lows and some very high highs). One gripe: in "Beauty and the Beast (Reprise)," the chorus still sings "Certain as the sun, ah-ah" and "Beauty and the Bea-ST, ahhh..." rather than "Certain as the suhhhh-ahhhn" and "Beauty and the Beeeeea... ahh, ahh..." as only the film version captures.

If you haven't heard this music, it's very impressive and moving, by all accounts. Film fans, the stage version changes the musical perspective of "Beauty" a little. The Beast is now a major singer, and so we hear much more from his point of view. New songs abound, and while they are not as memorable as the film's, they pad the story nicely. Menken's best are "Home" and "If I Can't Love Her," which sound beautiful (unfortunately, Tim Rice is no Howard Ashman, and so these songs sometimes have simplistic, predictable, or just awkward lyrics). "Wolf Chase" (if you've heard the unreleased master, "Wolf Attack," from the film version, it's got nothing on this newly orchestrated piece) and "Entr'Acte" showcase the orchestra's power. "Be Our Guest" now clocks in at a staggering eight minutes. The "Transformation" music, originally rather pastoral and resolved with moments of flourish, is now a roller coaster ride of reprises ("Home," "Prologue," "If I Can't Love Her," and the title song all have their time to shine), the energy level staying high and absolutely exploding at the transition from "If I Can't Love Her" into "Beauty and the Beast (Reprise)." A spine-tingling finale, indeed.

        4 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-04-07

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. I have performed this piece myself and listened to many other recordings, and this is truly the best one I've heard yet. The only problem I have is with the sound of the sopranos in the Sanctus movement. Other than that, a true masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best performance.......2006-12-17

Faure's Requiem is one of my favorite pieces. I have several different versions of it on CD and have even performed it myself with choir and orchestra (I am a tenor).
Based on the excellent reviews I went ahead and purchased this version and I am listening to it as I write this review.
This is definitely the clearest and cleanest performance of this requiem I have heard yet. I enthusiastically recommend it.
If you like Faure, also try Pelleas & Melisande. The Deutsche Grammophon version with Seiji Ozawa is very good. I had lost my tape and decided to purchase the CD recently. It comes with one of the best chorus versions of the Pavane (the one on this Requiem CD is very good but instrumental only).

        5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2006-10-11

I have been sampling other performances of the beautiful, moving Requiem, but there simply is no other as pure, and perfectly balanced -- the sorrow and darkness of grief is here, but unlike other requiems, in a way that touches the heart gently, lightly, and soothes the pain of loss. When you hear this recording, you somehow know that death is not the end.

5 out of 5 stars VERY BEST VERSION.......2005-12-01

I have an old Seraphim LP record - undated with no Copywrite or "P". I was ready to bring it to some very expensive Reproduction place to convert it to Digital for me, because I have bought many CD's of this piece that cannot come anywhere near the "majesty" of this version.

I once lent an audio tape I made of this record to a friend, and after a week he ask me, "how can you stand to part with it, even for a day?"

This is the very best rendition of Faure's Requiem I have every heard.

This is the one to own.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding .......2007-03-23

These performances are taken from the time when George Szell was the conductor of the Cleveland Symphony. They are magnificent performances, and the transfer to CD makes them sound better than the original LP in many cases.

I am absolutely loving to listen to these wonderful performances.

        5 out of 5 stars Szell's Moazrt.......2007-03-14

No one has conducted MOzart the way Szell did. And this album has some of his best recordings with the Cleveland Orchestra. Not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars No Chocolate Sauce..........2006-12-10

"There is a difference between the chaste sensuality of Mozart or Haydn and the lascivious sensuality of Richard Strauss. One cannot pour chocolate sauce over asparagus." George Szell

Sony's Original Jackets series continues with this release of the music of Mozart featuring (with a few exceptions) conductor and pianist George Szell. This is the second Original Jackets issue dedicated to Szell. The other, featuring Beethoven's Symphonies is also highly recommended. Sony has changed the format somewhat. Whereas the series initially rigidly adhered to the original LP programming, most of the CDs here are generously filled with bonus tracks. So much the better.

It must have taken some arm twisting on Szell's part to get Symphonies K. 200 and K. 319 recorded, as neither were repertoire staples in the 1960s (they still appear relatively rarely). Kudos to both Szell and Columbia for undertaking the project. Many of the other works here have been issued multiple times.

As with nearly everything else they recorded, the Szell/Cleveland combination brings forth performances of common sensibility and uncommon balance. The tempos and phrasing for each work and movement seem inevitable, and the performances are stripped of all phony Gemutlikeit. The various choirs of the orchestra are balanced with chamber-like precision, so that each voice is heard in proper perspective. This is even evident in the monaural recordings of three of the Symphonies, which are a tad more flexible than their stereo counterparts.

Szell, a co-pupil of Rudolf Serkin, was also a fine pianist. Szell's arrangement of Richard Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel (featuring sound effects from his cuff-links) is legendary. Both the Violin Sonatas and Piano Quartets show Szell as a sympathetic collaborator who was comfortable with ceding the spotlight to his partners. Szell was also an excellent collaborator in Concertos, as the Clarinet Concerto K. 622 with Robert Marcellus and the Piano Concerto K. 503 with Leon Fleischer demonstrate. Unlike, say, Toscanini, Szell did not feel the need to steamroll a soloist into complying with his own conception of a piece.

A few of the items here do not feature Szell as either pianist or conductor. The Leinsdorf conducted performance of the Minuet K. 409 - - charming, fluid, and transparent - - belies the notion that the Cleveland Orchestra was a second rate band until Szell came along. Likewise, Louis Lane, who was solidly in the Szell tradition of conducting, leads a superb performance of the Divertimento, K. 334. There are many in Cleveland, including myself, who feel Lane would have been a more appropriate successor to Szell than the eccentric Lorin Maazel.

The sound in the stereo items, recorded at Severance Hall, is greatly improved over previous issues. The location for the mono items is not documented, but to my ears it sounds like they were recorded at nearby Masonic Auditorium. The mono sonics are acceptable, if a bit boomy. Dynamics, which were constricted, have been opened up. The strings have lost their aggressive edge and have a sweeter, more natural character. It's well worth replacing the earlier issues of these recordings, and a must if you don't have them already.

4 out of 5 stars A famous Mozart conductor gets his due -- in spades.......2006-12-09

NOTE; Please ignore the large number of negative reviews here. They are from an anonymous Internet stalker.

At the height of his fame, George Szell was often praised by critics as the perfect Mozart conductor, a reputation that seems puzzling today. Today we get to hear many approaches to Mozart besides the kind exemplified here, which is fast, clipped, ultra-precise, and humorless. Shorn of elegance and reduced to a display of incredibly precise ensemble, Szell's Mozart can hardly be understood without realizing how dominant Toscanini was in the Forties and Fifties, when Szell rode in on his stylistic coattails. Strict disciplinarians make pretty sour concerts unless they possess Toscnini's genius, and Szell had at least that portion that could dazzle with virtuosity.

Given my opinion, why wuold I rate this big box set, which contains almost everything by Mozart that Szell ever recorded (or evverything Sony has decided to pluck from their Columbia and Epic archives)? Well, the music-making is dazzling, it must be admitted. Since Amazon doesn't give the contents of these 10 discs, I will copy the listing from the Crotchet, the British online store:

Symphony No.28 in C K200. Marriage of Figaro K492 : Overture. Symphony No.33 in B flat K319. Symphony No.35 in D K385 'Haffner'. Symphony No.39 in E flat K543. Symphony No.40 in G minor K550. Symphony No.41 in C K551 'Jupiter'. The Impresario K486 : Overture. Divertimento No.2 in D K131. Symphony No.41 in C K551 'Jupiter'. Sinfonia Concertante in E flat K364. Exsultate Jubilate K165. Serenade No.13 in G K525 'Eine kleine Nachtmusik'. Serenade No.9 in D K320 'Posthorn'. Divertimento No.17 in D K334. Lacrimosa. Minuet in C K409. Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in A K622. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.25 in C K503. Sonata for Piano and Violin No.24 in F K376. Sonata for Piano and Violin No.18 in G K301. Sonata for Piano and Violin No.21 in E minor K304. Sonata for Piano and Violin No.17 in C K296. Quartet for Keyboard Violin Viola and Cello in G minor K478. Quartet for Keyboard Violin Viola and Cello in E flat K493.

Sym. 39-41 are duplicated in mono and stereo (rather pointlessly since the performances are identical in every respect). Szell himself appears as pianist in the violini sonatas (with Cleveland Orch. concertmaster, Rafael Druian) and the piano quartet (in mono with members of the Budapest Qt.) Fleisher is the sazzling soloist in piano concerto (the concertos with Rudolf Serkin aren't included). The clarinet concerto is done by the orchestra's first char, Robert Marcellus. Druain reappears with the first-chair viola, Abraham Skemick for a dry-as-dust reading of the lovely E-flat Sinfonia Concertante. Judith Raskin is the superb soprano in Exultate Jubilate. To make matters confusing, the conductor of the Divertimento K. 334 isn't Szell at all but his assitant in Cleveland, Louis Lane, hwo does a reasonable job.

I don't know who wants this much of Szell's Mozart, but if I had to choose one cherishable recording, it would be the Posthorn Serenade, in which we get the usual precision but also a measure of charm and relaxation.
