Music of Robert Morris Robert Morris is presently chair of the composition department of the Eastman School of Music, where he is Professor of Composition and affiliate member of the theory and musicology departments. He is a recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Hanson Institute for American Music, the American Music Center and the American Council of Learned Societies. His music has been performed in North America, Europe, Australia, China, Taiwan and Japan. Morris has written music for a wide variety of musical forms and media. He has composed over 140 works including computer and improvisational music. Some of his output from the 1970's is influenced by non-Western music and uses structural principles from Arabic, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese and early Western musics. While such influences are less noticeable in more recent works, the temporal and ornamental qualities of Eastern music have permanently affected Morris' style. In addition to his music, Morris has written many articles and reviews that have appeared in scholarly music journals contributing to theories of musical analysis and aesthetics, compositional design, electronic and computer music, and Indian music. He is also co-editor of Perspectives of New Music.

The chorus is at center of Shaw's reading of the score, presumably the more lightly scored 1893 version that Fauré, himself created (Telarc does not specify). The account flows very well, and the work of both soloists is highly satisfying, particularly Judith Blegen's airy soprano in Pie Jesu. The recording dates from 1985-86 and is one of Telarc's best, with excellent presence overall and real bass in the organ. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:
Faure Requiem.......2007-05-10
The Faure is Great, Not so Much the Durufle.......2006-02-16
The Durufle Requiem (Op. 9) is one of my most favorite compositions of all time and it is not performed well on this disc for one reason: the solos are sung by the choir and that is not what I want to hear when I want to hear Durufle's requiem. Piquemal's version is still my favorite and I recommend that over this one.
Fast and in a very good condition.......2006-01-15
French Choral Classics.......2005-11-30
The Durufle Requiem is a horse of a different color. The rhythms and harmonies are not so classically straight-forward like the Faure; far from it. Not only do the rhythms constantly shift, the melodies aren't classically structured, but instead, quote and are reminiscent of chant, making the rhythmic changes seem natural. The harmonic setting is heavily steeped in church modes, but Durufle's lush orchestrations make this anything but old-fashioned. Much more thickly textured, Durufle doesn't fear to leap into occasional revelry and joyousness; Durufle has a knack for timing his climaxes just right, more moments of exuberance than Faure exhibited. This edition is the fully orchestrated version, and while there is a nice organ accompaniment edition, I much prefer the grandeur of the orchestra. Robert Shaw chooses not to have soloists, but instead have the choir parts sing the solos. This version is still highly exciting and lacks nowhere (unless you want soloists). You might want to choose to have an all Durufle choral CD (Michael Plasson in EMI classics is a good choice), but this pairing of two classics is an equally fine program.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus have not put out such a successful CD as in this 1987 digital Telarc classic. The sound is full and virile, the heightened sense of drama is apparent and can't be beat by any other recording, certainly not by another American choir. Nearly two decades after its release, this still remains the standard.
5 stars for amost every review, what does that tell you?.......2005-10-01
Faure & Durufle being the earliest predicessors of todays contemorary music, lay a foundation of perfection that few composers can build upon, and even fewer can surpass. Don't buy the latest recorded version of these Requiems, buy Robert Shaw's version. I guarantee you won't want another. Gary Dissette-Denver Colorado

Ownage.......2003-07-26
I ask - how much does this person know about this piece (the Four Seasons)?
This CD is the best Vivaldi CD I've heard yet, and I've heard a good many. Most of them rush through the more peaceful parts without showing a hint of feeling, or drag through more vigorous parts like the musicians and conductor are bored. But this CD lets you enjoy each movement of each concerto and actually feel what's being portrayed in the music.
I believe some of the parts that were referred to as bombast, etc., were from Summer. Summer, as all the concertos in the Four Seasons, has passages that depict storms. The storms in Concerto 3, Movement 3 specifically, however, are extremely violent. It's even written in the sheet music, which I own, that the parts are supposed to be violent! And if you're following along with what the music is portraying, then it'll give you chills.
I recommend fans of Vivaldi's Four Seasons look up the poems that were recited before each concerto. The poems explain what is being portrayed in the music. Ie, in Spring, the section after the main theme, with many seemingly random trills and 16th note runs, represents birds singing and chirping. The fast section after it represents the arrival of a spring thunderstorm, and thunder and lightning. Later in the movement, the birds return and then the music drifts away to flowing fountains of fresh water.
The Four Seasons really is a beautiful and brilliant piece of work. I think it goes without saying that it's highly recommended.
He's not really a Baroque conductor.......2002-02-25
His conducting of The Four Seasons, is what you may expect from Bernstein. He conducts with vigor, bombast, intensity, and other elements (such as a large dynamic range) that one doesn't typically associate with Baroque music. He doesn't have a stately grace or even a slightly cold touch - both of which I feel are vital to correctly perform Baroque.
So, if Bernstein's approach is your cup of tea, then you should, by all means, buy this album. You will love it. However, if you are more of a purist or traditionalist, then you should turn your attentions elsewhere.
It captured my heart!.......1999-08-17

Album Description
Berliners say New York's Rebecca Garfein is causing a revival of Reform Judaism in Germany; this mezzo-soprano is making history with her music, recorded in the country where her great -grandmother perished in the Holocaust. In 1997, she became the first female cantor to sing in a synagogue in Germany; where she performed as part of Berlin's International Jewish Cultural Festival; and this exquisite 1998 release captures that ground - (and stained-glass ceiling) - breaking moment. It contains Jewish songs and prayers in Hebrew and Yiddish, selections from the Book of Ruth and Song of Songs - liturgical music previously only chanted my male clergy - operatic in character, performed in what was once the women's gallery in the Oranienburger Strasse Synagogue before its destruction. This live performance was attended by Jews and non-Jews, women and men, together, shattering the historical separation of faiths and genders. Beautiful, significant, and highly recommended!Customer Reviews:
Not at all what I expected.......2006-01-21
I immediately searched the web for the info, got the name of the chant and found this CD. I almost purchased it without listening, when I found a different site, where they actually have rather long excerpts (2 min.) of most tracks, so I listened to them.
Boy, was I relieved and disappointed at once! Relieved that I didn't buy the CD and disappointed that I couldn't get the song I wanted (I was willing to buy a whole CD for just 1 song, that's how much it impressed me).
The song sounds very little like the one from the West Wing, although I do believe that the site where I found the info speficially pointed to this CD as having a recording of the same song used in the show. And I'm sorry to say it but the voice also doesn't hold a candle to the one used on the show - way too "operatic", as mentioned by many, and harsh and even unpleasant-sounding to me. It took all the charm and candor right out of the song (in the show, they had a much more natural voice do the song). I also agree that the choir does not mesh well with the soloist.
If anyone knows where and if I can purchase a recording of this song done by a different singer (if it can be the one from the West Wing, I'll be thrilled), please, let me know. In the meantime, I'm passing on this CD...

Solid, Spirited Recording of a Great Musical.......2007-03-25
If you haven't heard this music, it's very impressive and moving, by all accounts. Film fans, the stage version changes the musical perspective of "Beauty" a little. The Beast is now a major singer, and so we hear much more from his point of view. New songs abound, and while they are not as memorable as the film's, they pad the story nicely. Menken's best are "Home" and "If I Can't Love Her," which sound beautiful (unfortunately, Tim Rice is no Howard Ashman, and so these songs sometimes have simplistic, predictable, or just awkward lyrics). "Wolf Chase" (if you've heard the unreleased master, "Wolf Attack," from the film version, it's got nothing on this newly orchestrated piece) and "Entr'Acte" showcase the orchestra's power. "Be Our Guest" now clocks in at a staggering eight minutes. The "Transformation" music, originally rather pastoral and resolved with moments of flourish, is now a roller coaster ride of reprises ("Home," "Prologue," "If I Can't Love Her," and the title song all have their time to shine), the energy level staying high and absolutely exploding at the transition from "If I Can't Love Her" into "Beauty and the Beast (Reprise)." A spine-tingling finale, indeed.

Possibly the best performance.......2006-12-17
Based on the excellent reviews I went ahead and purchased this version and I am listening to it as I write this review.
This is definitely the clearest and cleanest performance of this requiem I have heard yet. I enthusiastically recommend it.
If you like Faure, also try Pelleas & Melisande. The Deutsche Grammophon version with Seiji Ozawa is very good. I had lost my tape and decided to purchase the CD recently. It comes with one of the best chorus versions of the Pavane (the one on this Requiem CD is very good but instrumental only).
Flawless.......2006-10-11
VERY BEST VERSION.......2005-12-01
I once lent an audio tape I made of this record to a friend, and after a week he ask me, "how can you stand to part with it, even for a day?"
This is the very best rendition of Faure's Requiem I have every heard.
This is the one to own.

George Szell Plays and Conducts Mozart

Szell's Moazrt.......2007-03-14
No Chocolate Sauce..........2006-12-10
Sony's Original Jackets series continues with this release of the music of Mozart featuring (with a few exceptions) conductor and pianist George Szell. This is the second Original Jackets issue dedicated to Szell. The other, featuring Beethoven's Symphonies is also highly recommended. Sony has changed the format somewhat. Whereas the series initially rigidly adhered to the original LP programming, most of the CDs here are generously filled with bonus tracks. So much the better.
It must have taken some arm twisting on Szell's part to get Symphonies K. 200 and K. 319 recorded, as neither were repertoire staples in the 1960s (they still appear relatively rarely). Kudos to both Szell and Columbia for undertaking the project. Many of the other works here have been issued multiple times.
As with nearly everything else they recorded, the Szell/Cleveland combination brings forth performances of common sensibility and uncommon balance. The tempos and phrasing for each work and movement seem inevitable, and the performances are stripped of all phony Gemutlikeit. The various choirs of the orchestra are balanced with chamber-like precision, so that each voice is heard in proper perspective. This is even evident in the monaural recordings of three of the Symphonies, which are a tad more flexible than their stereo counterparts.
Szell, a co-pupil of Rudolf Serkin, was also a fine pianist. Szell's arrangement of Richard Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel (featuring sound effects from his cuff-links) is legendary. Both the Violin Sonatas and Piano Quartets show Szell as a sympathetic collaborator who was comfortable with ceding the spotlight to his partners. Szell was also an excellent collaborator in Concertos, as the Clarinet Concerto K. 622 with Robert Marcellus and the Piano Concerto K. 503 with Leon Fleischer demonstrate. Unlike, say, Toscanini, Szell did not feel the need to steamroll a soloist into complying with his own conception of a piece.
A few of the items here do not feature Szell as either pianist or conductor. The Leinsdorf conducted performance of the Minuet K. 409 - - charming, fluid, and transparent - - belies the notion that the Cleveland Orchestra was a second rate band until Szell came along. Likewise, Louis Lane, who was solidly in the Szell tradition of conducting, leads a superb performance of the Divertimento, K. 334. There are many in Cleveland, including myself, who feel Lane would have been a more appropriate successor to Szell than the eccentric Lorin Maazel.
The sound in the stereo items, recorded at Severance Hall, is greatly improved over previous issues. The location for the mono items is not documented, but to my ears it sounds like they were recorded at nearby Masonic Auditorium. The mono sonics are acceptable, if a bit boomy. Dynamics, which were constricted, have been opened up. The strings have lost their aggressive edge and have a sweeter, more natural character. It's well worth replacing the earlier issues of these recordings, and a must if you don't have them already.
A famous Mozart conductor gets his due -- in spades.......2006-12-09
At the height of his fame, George Szell was often praised by critics as the perfect Mozart conductor, a reputation that seems puzzling today. Today we get to hear many approaches to Mozart besides the kind exemplified here, which is fast, clipped, ultra-precise, and humorless. Shorn of elegance and reduced to a display of incredibly precise ensemble, Szell's Mozart can hardly be understood without realizing how dominant Toscanini was in the Forties and Fifties, when Szell rode in on his stylistic coattails. Strict disciplinarians make pretty sour concerts unless they possess Toscnini's genius, and Szell had at least that portion that could dazzle with virtuosity.
Given my opinion, why wuold I rate this big box set, which contains almost everything by Mozart that Szell ever recorded (or evverything Sony has decided to pluck from their Columbia and Epic archives)? Well, the music-making is dazzling, it must be admitted. Since Amazon doesn't give the contents of these 10 discs, I will copy the listing from the Crotchet, the British online store:
Symphony No.28 in C K200. Marriage of Figaro K492 : Overture. Symphony No.33 in B flat K319. Symphony No.35 in D K385 'Haffner'. Symphony No.39 in E flat K543. Symphony No.40 in G minor K550. Symphony No.41 in C K551 'Jupiter'. The Impresario K486 : Overture. Divertimento No.2 in D K131. Symphony No.41 in C K551 'Jupiter'. Sinfonia Concertante in E flat K364. Exsultate Jubilate K165. Serenade No.13 in G K525 'Eine kleine Nachtmusik'. Serenade No.9 in D K320 'Posthorn'. Divertimento No.17 in D K334. Lacrimosa. Minuet in C K409. Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in A K622. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.25 in C K503. Sonata for Piano and Violin No.24 in F K376. Sonata for Piano and Violin No.18 in G K301. Sonata for Piano and Violin No.21 in E minor K304. Sonata for Piano and Violin No.17 in C K296. Quartet for Keyboard Violin Viola and Cello in G minor K478. Quartet for Keyboard Violin Viola and Cello in E flat K493.
Sym. 39-41 are duplicated in mono and stereo (rather pointlessly since the performances are identical in every respect). Szell himself appears as pianist in the violini sonatas (with Cleveland Orch. concertmaster, Rafael Druian) and the piano quartet (in mono with members of the Budapest Qt.) Fleisher is the sazzling soloist in piano concerto (the concertos with Rudolf Serkin aren't included). The clarinet concerto is done by the orchestra's first char, Robert Marcellus. Druain reappears with the first-chair viola, Abraham Skemick for a dry-as-dust reading of the lovely E-flat Sinfonia Concertante. Judith Raskin is the superb soprano in Exultate Jubilate. To make matters confusing, the conductor of the Divertimento K. 334 isn't Szell at all but his assitant in Cleveland, Louis Lane, hwo does a reasonable job.
I don't know who wants this much of Szell's Mozart, but if I had to choose one cherishable recording, it would be the Posthorn Serenade, in which we get the usual precision but also a measure of charm and relaxation.
