Adagio follows in the rosin-dusted footsteps of The Impressionists, A Different Mozart, and A Different Prelude. As with those releases, it was produced by Dawn Atkinson and features many of the same artists. The results are as varied as the musicians. Violinist Tracy Silverman cuts one of his patented echo-delayed pizzicato violin arrangements of a Bach arioso, while Patrick O'Hearn drapes a somber keyboard shroud around the Adagio from Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman. Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning find the Celtic air in the Adagio from Handel's Sonata in G, while Philip Aaberg discovers infinity between the notes of Barber's ubiquitous Adagio for Strings. He stretches the melody across his piano in finely drawn lines, subtlety filled out with synthesizer undertones. Subtlety is a casualty on Philipe Saisse's bongos, bells, and synth arrangement of Bach's Air on a G String. It's also sacrificed in a corny confection of Handel's Sarabande by Paul Schwartz. His ham-fisted electronic keyboards would've sounded dated even before Switched-On Bach. But Adagio features plenty of musicians who are willing to surrender themselves to their elegiac themes, including guitarist Steve Erquiaga, Mike Marshall, and Edgar Meyers. --John Diliberto

This is the first Windham Hill compilation I've purchased in a long, long time, and I am thrilled with the music.
The artistry is stunning, the artists bring themselves to the music while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the original piece.
My favorite is Grieg's Nocturne, arranged and performed by Steve Erquiaga. I have been in love with his music from the moment
I heard his CD "Cafe Paradiso" (Imaginary road Records). It is absolutely stunning!
When I saw that he was on "Adagio" I went for it. I'm so happy that I did ...
Other hightlights for me are Philip Aaberg's "Adagio for Strings", Tracy Silverman's "Arioso" ..... they're all beautiful.

5 Stars Discounting Recording Problems.......2007-05-14

The content is terrific. This CD is one of a series of classical music masters. The only problem is that tracks 38 and later have a lot of distortion/static. I returned thinking it was a problem with the disc, but the replacement disc had the same problem. If not for that, I would have rated 5 stars.

Perfect for homeschooling........2007-01-29

The narratives are short enough to keep your children's attention, the music may be short in some instances but if you're playing it in the background for exposure- it doesn't matter. The price is great and the cheapest you'll find in addition to the 4 for 3 deal. We have all 18 of these cds and don't regret it!

I have found this recording series to be a very helpful introductory teaching device for my young children. It gives a brief history of the composer and samples of the musical style.

The music on this CD is all wonderful, and it's a perfect CD toget - if you have the attention span of a soap bubble! Thisis a "sampler" with narrative and very few of thepieces listed are actually played in their entirety. Even pieces which are short to begin with are excerpted. We are given a whole minute of the Hallelujah Chorus and a rousing 45 seconds from the overture from "Ezio". This is a teaching CD which gives some fine examples to support the narration - but they are very short examples. A few bars here and there is all you get.

Handel's Greatest Hits.......2007-02-26

I found this recording disappointing in many respects. The sound quality was much lower than expected, especially on track 7 "Largo" which on the origional, Ormandy had created such a quiet grandeur. In trach 11 "Let the Bright Seraphim" Wynton Marsalis overpowered the singing of Edita Gruberova, whereas the music should always be the backup of the singer, and not vice versa. I don't know what happened to the "Hallelujah Chorus," but it didn't come off very well at all.

All Handel's Greatest Hits are not created equal........2004-02-25

Nothing else tops this unusually gorgeous rendering. Leppard's is the finest conducting of Handel to this reviewers ears. Especially the Xerxes Largo and the Watermusic
Hornpipes and Fireworks Oveurture tempi, legato and orchestration is full of warmth and energy. A true chiara scuro interpretation. Fabulous!!!!

This collection of George Frideric Handel's "Greatest Hits" leans more heavily towards "The Water Music Suite" than his oratorical work, which is my only serious complaint about this CD as an introduction to the composer's work. Although is does have "See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes" from Judas Maccabaeus and ends with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing the "Hallelujah Chorus," it does not have "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Messiah, which I consider a glaring omission. The "new" piece for me on this CD that is a nice discovery is "Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine)," performed by Wynton Marsalis and the English Chamber Orchestra.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

It is a fine collection of oboe pieces, and I really enjoy listening to them. The only complaint I have is that the case was broken when it got here (I'm not sure if it was before it was shipped or not).

This cd took a little while to be delivered (a few weeks) but it was in excellent condition. I bought it along with another oboe cd so it could be that one of them was out of stock and they waited for that so that both could be shipped at the same time (which was fine with me).

I just cant stop listening to this. If you enjoy classical music. You will like this CD and if you would like a introduction to classical music than this is the CD for you.

Good for orchestra studies.......2005-07-24

The record presents the oboe very well. Price can't be beat too. Oboe music is always enjoyable (well, that's somewhat subjective, of course, but if you like oboe, you'll like this collection).

Just a small caution: this is a study aid sort of thing. I find listening to fragments of music -- frequently very familiar music -- somewhat distressful because of this coitus interruptus sorta feeling, kind of like when in the middle of Watermusik the Dying Swan piece suddenly heaves into sight.

In other words, this is a perfect CD for teaching kids the orchestra, but if you simply want some oboe music for pleasure, then I'd recommend to pick something else; for example "The Handel Collection" (a pretty old record), by The City of London Sinfonia (cond. John Rutter), 1990 American Gramaphone Records -- it is a collection too, but not excerpts, pieces are played fully, and the performance is sometimes better. It's just one example; I have it handy so I've mentioned it, that's all. I don't like listening to excerpts, that's what I'm trying to say. But I'm not saying this CD's bad, it's very good for orchestra studies.

Just wonderful.......2007-04-27

I was surprised, but not too, to discover that this nonpareil jazz keyboardist has been generating "classical" (or in this case Baroque) albums. Of course many greats of jazz had classical training, but Jarrett has taken that ball and run with it. This particular album is my first of his "art" music, and I am now eager to check out all the rest. This one is a delight to listen to. I will play it again and again, I'm sure. As Jarrett points out, the music is not virtuosic, and perhaps for that reason is rarely heard; but what a discovery for our musical palates -- the seeming simplicity only adds to our enjoyment. This is a peaceful and thoroughly pleasing album. You will not be disappointed.

Jarrett's Piano Career Path Leads, at Last, to Performances of Handel's Suites of Gloriously "Right" Musicality.......2006-08-22

There is no need to belabour the excellences of Keith Jarrett's performances of Handel's keyboard suites. The playing has the lyrical flow that other Amazon.com and Amazon.ca reviewers almost unanimously praise so lavishly and so rightly; even when Jarrett choses at times to play somewhat détaché, he never pokes, bangs, or thumps, as so many other keyboard players tend (whether on the piano or the harpsichord) to do. The phrasing of the music is so beautifully delineated that one simply would have to look long and far, indeed, to find the equal!

The way that Jarrett plays the suites in E minor and in A major alone would be worth the price of this disc, but the entire CD is a delight from beginning to end. However, in the other suites, there occasionally is all of that gentle reflectiveness that characterises his playing, in his own improvisational music and in classical repertoire alike, at the expense of the spritelier movements' humour and dash, the tempi at times just a tad too slow to maximise the brio of such sections, but all is forgiven for the sheer musicality and utter lack of pedantry of what one has to endure elsewhere in the performances of "early music specilists" or of some aggressive thwackers of Baroque keyboard music (especially in the music of Handel's contemporary, J.S. Bach) such as Weissenberg and (too much of the time) Gould.

The fugues in these suites simply surpass what praise can heap upon them. The fugue in the suite in E minor would be one of my prime choices to students of keyboard playing of how to execute a fugue or other work in strict counterpoint, with clarity and stylishness but also with a lyrical impetus that one seldom finds (usually, as others play, the impetus being at the expense of lyricism, or the lyricism at the expense of rhythmic articulation and forward motion) in players who fall short of Jarrett's combination of sensibility, elegance, taste, and sheer technical aplomb.

Well, one need not go further; read the other laudatory reviews and rest assured that the praise of the listeners who wrote them is utterly justified. Do not let any snide and crabbed musicologist or envious keyboard-tweaking "specialist" lure you with the inevitable and unjustifiedly negative comments of such unmusical riff-raff into underestimating the beauty, elegant style combined with expressivity, and the virtuosity that Keith Jarrett brings totally and so surpassingly well to the service of what the music as Handel conceived it was meant to convey and as Jarrett does so in these recorded performances of Handel's suites.

Jazz Man Meets the Baroque Master.......2005-12-31

This reviewer agrees with all the postive comments made previously in this column. Jarrett makes the case in two areas, first, he askes at the end of his introduction that he hopes this recording can do some good in the direction of allowing the composer's keyboard works to occupy a higher position in our awareness. Jarrett has done this by his thoughtful introduction as well as his thoughtful playing. Jarrett also makes the case for himself occupying an increasingly deserved place among classical pianists.

This is Baroque music at its finest (if on a "modern" instrument). This is solo classical music at its finest (even if it is by a jazz man!). There are a few other classical recordings by this jazz artist. I am hopeful there will be many more.

HOMAGE TO HANDEL.......2003-07-10

Jarrett's recording of seven attractive Handel suites is, well, just delicious. His pianism, always at the service of the composer, is consistently lyrical, never rushed or hectic, with textures warm and rich. Each suite holds its own bounty, all of which Jarrett mines to the fullest. The pianist's jazz background complements the music, imbues it with a depth and humanity rarely found, especially in baroque keyboard. As well, it's more than apparent that Jarrett has made a conscious effort to get completely "inside" the composer, completely "inside" the music. He has succeeded incredibly well.

Sample, for instance, his swirling, beautifully wrought playing of the opening Prelude from Suite 1, No. 1 (HWV 426), the purity of the following Allemande, and the yearning wistfulness of the Courante. Or feel the breathtaking melancholy of the opening Adagio of Suite 1, No. 2 (HWV 427). And the particular beauty Jarrett imparts to the Prelude-Fuga of Suite 1, No. 8 (HWV 433) is absolutely not to be missed. This is playing of such tenderness and honesty that it silences criticism, pays homage to Handel and offers us the most unusual kind of musical blessing.

This CD is wonderful because I have never heard Haendel played like this - Baroque meets the Koeln concert. Without depriving Haendel's music of its period appeal, Jarrett is able to infuse it with his absolutely unique keyboard style. Furthermore the pieces fit together so well that they seem to form a natural melodic progression that the listener soon wants to continue forever. A wonderful set of music!

Baroque Trumpet at its Best.......2007-05-16

The desire for period instrument recordings is now reaching higher and farther than before in this country (indeed, though, it is still surpassed by that of Europe). Here we have the premiere example of the gorgeous playing of Niklas Eklund on the baroque trumpet repertoire, who here is all but unreachable from the point of technique, phrasing, and sound.

As a trumpet player, I personally understand difficulties of performing this repertoire on the baroque trumpet which Niklas, as a fourth generation trumpeter, does not notice (when I saw him live this became more clear than ever it was). His trills are to be envied by a valved trumpet and his sound quality is ever constant and beautiful at all registers in his playing. His phrasing is both period appropriate and moving. He does not over embellish or perform in a showy manner, but rather he emotes. The moving quality of his playing left me speechless upon the first hearing of this album. Here the Telemann concerto in particular deserves recognition especially in the Adagio movement, for where many trumpeters fall apart he continues growing and moving through to the last note.

The selection of repertoire is fairly standard and these are pieces that anyone familiar with the baroque trumpet repertoire might be expected to know, after all, though, it is but his first album. Repertoire is, however, as stated, the only thing "standard" about this recording. The playing by the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble matches the quality by Eklund and the two work together flawlessly. Regardless of how many other recordings there are of this repertoire out there, this one is the one above all others that you should own if you are intent upon discovering this music, and I give this both as a trumpet player and avid music fan. From an economical standpoint, this is also a NAXOS release which means that it's generally cheaper than other recordings of the same repertoire.

In short, if it you are searching for a recording of either period performances of baroque music or simply a recording of one of these specific pieces, there should be no doubt in your mind that this is the one for you, for reasons of sound and performance quality as well as price.

This cd is, by far the best trumpet cd I own. His control in all registers, especially his trills, is unreal. Niklas Eklund has gone beyond merely acomplishing the right notes. It sounds better than anything I've heard with valves. This is, however, not just a technical show. His phrasing, particularly in the Telemann, is fabulous. The longer note values in the trecherous technical passages in the second and fourth movements is refreshing. For anyone who has ever played a baroque trumpet or just likes good music, this is a must.

If you love baroque keyboard music, this CD is a must have. Pariah's technical skill is impeccable and his interpretations bring a new insight into the timeless beauty of these pieces. What a talent. Amazing!

Perahia's artistry lifts the Handel suites to breathtaking levels of expressiveness. The pity is that it's not an all Handel CD.

Over the years I have compiled a list of pianists I want to be sure to hear in concert before I die. At the top of the list of remaining pianists yet unheard is Murray Perahia. He is, for me, possibly the most talented, most musical, most elegant pianist before the public. What, I asked myself, do I have to add to the sixteen reviews of this disc thus far submitted? Well, probably nothing startling. But I felt I needed to add my praise and a few comments about this essential disc.

The first, I suppose, is that I feel this disc IS essential. For anyone interested in baroque keyboard music this release (along with the other Bach and Handel discs Perahia has made) shows us how a modern pianist, using modern techniques and performance practices, has much to say about this so-familiar music. Of course, Perahia has a perfected technique. His left hand is possibly the best I've ever heard. Just listen to the incredibly fast runs, inflected on the fly, in some of the fast movements presented here (as in the presto variation of the 'Harmonious Blacksmith,' for instance). Nobody else has as fluid a legato or rounded tone as Perahia. His feather-light staccatos at breakneck speed are breathtaking. In the G minor Chaconne of Handel the left hand octaves ring out like a 16-foot organ pedal stop. And on and on. All of this is the service of elegance, grace and rich yet crystalline sonority. When drama is called for, it's there.

The extensive, admiring booklet notes, written by the late, great harpsichordist (and no mean pianist himself) Igor Kipnis, capture what is unique about Perahia.

This disc belongs on every musiclover's shelf.

Whether you are into the intricacies of piano playing or just need the perfect way to relax after a long day, this music and Perahia's incomparable playing are good for the soul.

Best piano playing on record.......2005-04-16

Well maybe that is a bit exaggerated but it certainly ranks way up there with the best.

I was fortunate enough to see Murray Perahia perform a number of these pieces in Oxford during the period leading up this recording. Handel's Chaconne in particular stuck in my mind after the concert as it had a profound affect on me. I am not one moved to tears often but the tears flowed in the concert and they still flow when I listen to this recording.

The "Harmonious Blacksmith" is another astonishing piece on piano.

In fact the whole album is astonishing. The playing is precise and clear at all times, as baroque music should be, but Mr Perahia manages to avoid a mechanical approach, injecting humanity into the music without sentimentality.

I could waffle on for ages but all you need to know is that this album is truly breathtaking and should be in every music lovers collection.

Heck buy two copies so you can keep one in the car permanently ;-)

Just a pity Handel and Scarlatti couldn't hear it!

The performances are solid & clean, and the arrangements are perfect. But the group doesn't even have a name, so the question is, where can we get the sheet music for these arrangements? They're the most useful I've heard.
