It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of these and none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the original blockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainment and the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearing as an event--phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is an occasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars, and to have fun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience. Much of the fun and flavor of the concert is dependent on seeing the action, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing much more. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer, and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high, and loud--and you don't take your opera too seriously--you'll love this disc. --David Vernier

Un gran concierto.......2005-07-19

Yo tenia el Cd de este concierto, pero sin duda el DVD presenta la realidad, lo sublime de este evento, porque ademas de ver las interpretaciones, trae varios puntos y canciones extras. Carreras creo que esta bien, saca la tarea. Placido Domingo en Amor vida de mi vida, logra llevar el concierto a su punto mas alto en ese momento, punto superado unicamente por Pavarotti en Nessum Dorma. Pavarotti como siempre sublime como dije en Nessum Dorma, Ave maria y en los popurris. La calidad del DVD es genial, con full screen y sonido digital. Otro punto buenisimo es la aparicion de Frank Sinatra en la cancion My way y de otras luminarias del cine y la política. Espero que este comentario sirva de ayuda para aquellos que quieran este DVD.

The Three Tenors has/have become a cottage industry, churning out one CD after another for every imaginable event and in every combination. This does not mean that the results are necessarily inferior but it does imply a commercial, layman's approach. And maybe this is better - spreading the joys of fine music to the masses. After all, where besides figure skating and cartoons do most people have a chance to even hear opera?

This event, like the first one in Rome, has a magnificent setting but, like Rome, the show was marketed mainly to the American audience. They still include the dreadful "Maria" with the hilarious pronunciation and even added "With a Song In My Heart" (or, as Carreras is wont to sing, "Weeth a Soeeng een My Haht"). Though some may deride the choice of encores, they were almost perfect. The Three Tenors, despite their prior celebrity, are creations of our culture of entertainment in ways that Caruso could only dream about.

Synopsis: Carreras stands out, Domingo substitutes volume for quality and Pavarotti soars when he doesn't have to.

I am not a regular Opera fan, hoever these THREE are the Best. their songs they sing together are SUPER!!! And the range of NOTES REACHED ARE REMARKABLE. tHE MIXTURE of songs is a treat for all, even if you are not an OPERA FAN!!!! Great show!!!!!!

Not what I thought it was going to be. I like only about 4 of the 20+ tracks on this CD. I shoudl have just bought the DVD instead and actually watched them perform. Much, much more entertaining.

Last Encore of songs missing off C.D........2002-02-06

The Three Tenors are my absolute favourite singers. The 1994 Concert was undoubtedly their best in my view. I taped this live concert from the television, and have played and played and played it!! I also taped it on a cassette, however, when I bought the C.D. I was really disappointed that they did not include the last set of encore songs, which included O Sole a Mio (don't know if I've spelt that correctly), where Placido and Jose try and outdo Luciano!! It received such a fantastic reception from the crowd, (one of the many standing ovations), and really showed how much the Three Tenors seemed to enjoy performing the concert. How come this was not included? I don't know if it was on the Video because I play my own.

Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

Watch out! If you already have Putumayo World Christmas..........2003-12-15

If you already have Putumayo World Christmas, four of the 12 songs on this album are duplicates from that album. I don't understand why they released another Christmas album while the other one was still available if they weren't going to put all new songs on it.

That said, this is a great album. It's a ton of fun to hear songs from around the world about Christmas and a really good variety of songs from different areas.

A nice selection of 16 songs arranged and performed brilliantly by Andre Rieu for music lovers at Christmas time. Everyone in the family enjoyed the music at home and on the road during the holidays.

Christmas Music For Always.......2007-01-11

Beautifully crafted, with international Christmas songs. Instrumentally, the orchestra, always excellent, seems to sound even better than usual. Vocally most enjoyable, with the added dimension of a group of Japanese children (small children!) beautifully singing holiday songs from around the world in their high-pitched, innocent-sounding voices, coming across like my idea of baby angels! I love listening to this CD.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly.......2006-12-14

I rarely buy Christmas music. I hear a lot it every where I go in public so why buy any? Well this year I have made a couple of exceptions. One being the Celtic Woman Christmas cd and the other Andre Rieu's "Christmas Around the World". Thanks to PBS and its annual pledge drive, I caught the latest Andre Rieu tv special and for once just fell in love with the music. Normally I don't really pay much attention to Andre's specials or his music but this was that rare occasion where the music just blew my mind away. A lot of the credit goes to the adorable Japanese children choir The Little Angels of Nagasaki who simply captured my heart. The other reason I bought "Christmas Around the World" was the gorgeous ballad "Slumber, MY Darling". I found the song to be emotionally moving. I also love "O Holy Night", one of my all time favorite Christmas caroles. Not everyone can sing this song correctly since it has some high notes. The only duds on this cd was "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Winter Wonderland", two songs that sounded flat as well as bland. Overall "Christmas Around the World" is a delightful album to listen to.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Good for Younger Girls.......2006-11-20

I think Play is an awesome group but I feel they took a step backwards after making Replay. I mean Replay was obviously directed towards older teens then their next cd's go back to sounding like they're for younger girls. It seems like this cd as well as don't stop the music would've gone before replay and Replay would've been their last cd cuz that would've made a lot more since rather than having a cd with songs called Let's get to the Love Part and Hot then having your next cd have songs like it's a hard knock life. But this cd is okay I just think the cover could've been more Christmas like and honestly Janet's vocals get annoying her notes sound so forced and struggled I think Faye gave the group a better harmony. But anyways this cd is more for younger girls I think the older they got the more backwards they went.

This is a perfect buy for all Play fans to get into the Christmas spirit.

Overall vocals are good, but it is way to obvious that the girls were sick during recording. Background vocals drown out the lead vocals on some songs. The music sounds too computerized. Some arrangments were too rushed, and the girls' Swedish accents could've been fixed. The cover of this album doesn't show much Christmas spirit. It most likely was an outtake from a previous photoshoot. This album was obviously rushed, seeing as Play was at the end of their pop stardom.

The high points of this album are Janet's amazing vocal on "Oh Holy Night" and "Silent Night". Their remake of Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is almost perfect.

I liked this Christmas c.d cause the tunes are good. But JAnet(member) like way over does her singing. I mean shes trying a bit too hard. ANyway this was the last of Plays c.ds and its good but it was obviosly a rushed c.d

Play is my favorite group of singers, and I'm highly depressed that they are not together. Considering that this album sings out the songs resung by Play, Christmas is a coming. Play sings with all their hearts on this. I heard all the songs and I loved it!! I love their versions cuz' they make it sound the best. They really bring out the Chrismas spirit!!

Every once in awhile I run across an album that excells, not because of the shining brilliance of one artist, but because of the collective impact of several. Here, in this album, are some little-known gems from Christmas music literature. I was captivated by the lilting and primitive joy in "Jesus, the Light of the World," which I had never heard before. Then there is Chanticleer and its rendition of Charles Ives' "Christmas Carol," a classic too little known. There are others. If you look for unique renditions of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas music to enhance the joy of the season, this album is a must-buy.

Simply the Best..........2002-11-19

The minute I heard Thomas Hampson sing the first few notes of Adeste Fideles, I knew I had to have this album. It is a marvelous compilation of Classical Christmas favorites (excerpts from the Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli Christmas Concertos and The Nutcracker) and standard Christmas favorites, as well as some of the lesser heard Christmas gems.

The vocal power on this 2 CD set is amazing as well--Broadway star Linda Eder, Thomas Hampson, Kiri Te Kanawa, Jose Carreras, Chanticleer, and numerous others. I usually purchase one Christmas CD a year. This was it for me this year--make it part of your holiday collection.

Kati Szvorak and Teka take a folk tour of Hungary.......2002-12-24

This CD is a treasure trove of folk music from Hungary - NOT just children's songs. Great playing by Teka, vocals by Kati Szvorak. There are some vocals by non-adults, but are done well, not whiny or cutsey. Songs from practically every region of (greater)Hungary - Dunantul, Mezoseg, Moldva, Zobor - arranged in sections by "purpose" - wedding,Carnival, etc. For instance, in the dance section you get a great Dunantuli set. I originally purchased this because it has some Christmas songs on it. It also has a wonderful name-calling/taunting song - "S a te fejed akkora..." If you like Marta Sebestyen, Sebo, etc, you will like this CD. It's also a great introduction to Hungarian Folk music. Enjoy.

Possibly the Most Sublime Vocal Music Ever Recorded.......2003-03-06

I have only listened to the Texas Boys Choir doing Britten's "Ceremony of Carols" about 200 times in my life: it is ABSOLUTELY sublime: EXTREMELY chilling, haunting, magnificent. Long ago I got a cassette tape of the recording (it is now ancient but still precious to me!) - when I found out that a CD of the recording has been released (see above) I ordered it immediately!!! I have listened to other recordings of the Ceremony of Carols, but the Texas Boys Choir version reduces me to tears. I don't know about the other material on this CD, but it doesn't matter: I would pay almost any price to have a CD of the Texas Boys Choir "Ceremony of Carols" - what more can be said? Rating: INFINITE STARS.

NOT your traditional Carols, for non-traditional people.......2002-07-30

This CD started out as two separate Vinyl LPs over 20 years ago. One was The Ceremony of Carols, and tradtional Carols by The Gregg Smith Singers and the Texas Boys Choir; and the other was the Carols From Around The World. Whoever had the genius to put them on one CD deserves a huge pat on the back. The International Carols are unique-most of them I had never heard before purchasing the album 20 years ago. The "Three Phillipine Songs" and "Rorate Coeli" especially stir me when I listen to them by the Christmas tree lights.
I sang "The Ceremony of Carols" in college and loved it. This version, by the Texas Boy Choir is the best I've come across. The Choir voices are pure as angels' and on songs like "This Little Babe" they can make the hair on my arms stand up. The price on this CD is almost incredibly inexpensive for the beautiful music on it. Buy it! after nearly 30 years of listening to these songs, I still feel a quiver of anticipation when I hear the first notes of "In Dulci Jubilo".
