This is a very great chorus, and one of Haydn's best as far as i am concerned. The pace, grandness and spirit of the piece all conjure in one's imagination the majesty of heaven, and God's throne. I cannot help but be moved to praise the God of the heavens and the earth.

I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I mostly listen to rock and roll; but the way my uncle, and now I, play this thing, it is rock and roll from another era!!!

After Mr Shaw spent many years in NYC and Cleveland with RCA Red Label,he came into Atlanta for a big change! Soon he switched to TELARC DIGITAL! I still Joyfully remember our Recording of the Christmas Nativity in Dec of 1975! Sir Robert, conducting with earphones encasing his head shouted: "Stop the taping, there is some Darn Sizzling noise in those Lights!" We may have not heard the word "Damn" lights, that he employed at times!

On both this newer release of TELARC and the older Recording of The Christmas Nativity, there are Bach's Chorale, Break Forth, Dona Nobis Pacem from the B-Minor Mass, Handel's Hallelujah! Plus the exquisite, Shepherds's Farewell to the Holy Family of Berlioz's The Infant Christ!

Those who may not be familiar with Berlioz from both recordings, will be richly rewarded by hearing them plus the Rex Tremendae from Berlioz''s Requiem and the other Kyrie from the Bach B-Minor! Absolutely, no other Christmas Music can ever approach these two splendid recordings, which are the basis of the ASO celebrating every Christmas with "Robert Shaw in the Spirit!"

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Beautiful Playing, Terrific Bargain.......2004-04-17

Before Heifetz came along, Mischa Elman was the reigning violinist for the first three decades of the twentieth century, famous for his rich, beautiful tone and his passionate, intelligent interpretations. He had a very distinctive style. You won't hear his like today.

This two-CD set, recorded 1959-66, features the great Mischa Elman still in good form playing favorite encore pieces (the second disc consists entirely of Fritz Kreisler classics). Age hadn't dimmed that golden Elman tone: He still sounds ravishing here. The accompanist, Joseph Seiger, is Elman's equal in insight, sensitivity, and elegance.

Hats off to the engineers: The sound quality of these discs is outstanding--a warm, vivid presence, perfectly balanced. If it had been recorded yesterday, it wouldn't sound better than this.

Most impressive!.......2006-11-06

I collect interpretations of Beethoven sonatas, thus was surprised to learn there are "old and tested" performances (I should really say, ones of this stature!) I did not know. The "A Thérèse", "Waldstein", "Tempest" and Op. 109 sonatas are absolute standouts here, and Hungerford's Op. 110 also ranks among the finest versions I know. They all tend to be, for the lack of a better word, masculine performances, in the best sense of the term (if taking getting used to perhaps), as well as intellectual ones, thoroughly considered, sometimes surprising in conception as well as detail, though never unnecessarily cute. Better yet, there's not a single letdown on this double CD. At this price, buy first and think later, or else these might disappear again before you know what you're missing...

One of the Best.......2005-09-05

It is unfortunate that Bruce Hungerford's untimely death prevented him from completing a complete cycle of Beethoven's sonatas. Otherwise, he could have been ranked among the greatest of the great. His playing explores the deep text of a score as vividly as Arrau would, and his technique is nearly as virtuostic as Horowitz. He would have been the perfect performer of these great, powerful pieces of music had he lived long enough, and it is a pity that only a small circle of piano-lovers recognize his talent. I recommend him highly, and the sound is indeed amazing as well.

Decent Quality, But a Little Rushed.......2002-09-20

I have to agree that this is a good collection of music for the money, especially if you are a novice at the Classics like me. Each disc covers a 40 year period with an hour of music and a little bit of history in the cover slip. However, there were some oddities that made me question the quality of this product. First, a few of the songs seemed like the conductor was hurrying them along so the songs on a disc would add up to exactly one hour -- where's the love? I know I'm a novice, but there are just some songs that are so famous that you can pretty easily tell when they are being butchered or compressed. Second, the quality of the product was suspect. Some of the discs looked like they were manufactured in 1990 and some in 1994. The older ones just had the titles on the discs and the newer ones had a screen-printed color change with no information. They couldn't even use the same type of Jewel Case throughout the collection. In total, it's good for beginners and the money, but not much else.

Not bad, but not a perfect as well. The music selection is very questionable for my taste. The performers are not always very suitable for specific masterpieces. It is inherently, just because such mix of names cannot be bad ;). If I will compose such set a lot of forgotten things should take their place.

Bought this CD to calm and relax myself after a hard days work. CD seems like a great collection to me. It's got a lot of songs that I recognize and some that I don't. It does sooth me a bit after the the many stresses of everyday life.

I'm not really a classical music nut like "Frasier Crane" so I'm not sure how much merit I can bring to the table with this review. But I think it's great..!!!

Wonderful Selection.......2001-05-13

Some of the world's truly finest musicians perform some of the all time greatest and most loved musical masterpieces. The CD makes for easy and peaceful listening of an evening.

Good Selections At Great Price.......2003-01-15

Great selection of Music, but the sound quality was poor. It seems that this recording was taken from older recordings off of analog recording. The last selection from Mozart's "A Little Night Music" actually has drag sound. If the sound quality was better -- it would be a great value!
