4 out of 5 stars '76 scores.......2001-08-03

Rock On's 1976 collection is a nice combination of styles from the era. You get some disco with Vicki Sue Robinson's "Turn The Beat Around", white boy funk with Wild Cherry's ubiquitous "Play That Funky Music", blue-eyed Philly soul from Hall & Oates with their first big hit, the beautiful "Sara Smile", r&b from Earth, Wind & Fire on the smooth "Can't Hide Love" and California soft rock from England Dan & John Ford Coley on "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight". War's "Summer" perfectly encapsules the feeling a lazy summer day with a great Latin flavored groove. Martin Balin gives one of his best vocal performances on Jefferson Starship's sweet "With Your Love" and future Starship lead singer Mickey Thomas sings lead on Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around & Fell In Love". There are some clunkers like the saccharine "Afternoon Delight" by The Starland Vocal Band and the ridiculously awful "Money Honey" from The Bay City Rollers.

4 out of 5 stars Fine, Funky and Smooth.......2003-03-26

From the opening upbeat title song you will be in store for a rare talented artist. The upbeat opener "When Summer Comes" is hot and cooking! Get a feel of "Grazing in the Grass"! It is the best version yet, especially if you love smooth funk. "Three Minute Warning" has a mix of clasic jazz and funk that is awesome. Other gifted artists contributing to this fine work are George Duke, Everett Harp, Paul Jackson Jr., Vance Taylor and Stanley Clarke. If you enjoy complex smooth and funky jazz, do not hesitate to get this cd.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pina Carmirelli's Is The Best By I Musici If Not The Best Period.......2005-10-20

Although I Musici is certainly one of the best chamber groups in the world for Baroque music if not the best as claimed by Toscanini, there is also a standard of excellence for the violin soloists in I Musici itself over the past 50 years and Agostini is not the best but rather memorable in this performance. Agostini performs the concerti well here but the crucial 'Four Seasons' is somewhat above average by the standards of I Musici itself. Although I find this interpretation better than Ayo's and Michelucci's with I Musici, this performance of 'The Four Seasons' itself is not I Musici's best for this piece by a long shot. I have not heard one rendition anywhere whether chamber or symphonic that even compares to the absolutely brilliant 1982 performance by I Musici and Pina Carmirelli. It is truly the clearest and most passionate performance available to date. Carmirelli's proficiency for this piece completely surpasses Ayo's rather safe and monotone interpretation. Michelucci's is even worse. Agostini's however has a better graps than the preceding violinists but still can't compete with Carmirelli. With a steady but constant pace, Carmirelli swings the bow and soars the scales with impeccable clarity and proficiency: there is simply not one hesitation or moment of faltering in transitions. It is simply a breathtakingly divine performance.

For those who are debating other options, don't be deceived into buying other performances even if they have skilled violinists such as Perlman or Zuckerman. The latter are specialized in the German Romantic and Klezmer traditions of violin and so tend to perform better with Northern European composers from the Romantic period such as Brahms or Wienawski but not with Italian ones generally and Italian Baroque violin pieces least of all! As for performances by great conductors and symphonies such as Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic or Solti and the Chicago/London Symphonies, the orchestral ensembles they use are generally too large for chamber pieces and most of the instruments used are modern. They are also recorded in too large of spaces so the performances sound like Beethoven's 9th instead of a chamber lyrical piece. There are other groups and recordings that are more faithful to Baroque techniques and traditional interpretations but their performances tend to suffer in their lyrical aspects and recording quality. The artists in such chamber groups generally come from academic backgrounds in traditional techniques and instruments instead of professional circles and so are more focused on applying the techniques instead of evoking from them the lyrical mood required by the piece. This results in clumsy and lifeless performances where each musician is so painfully struggling to apply the correct technique to their individual instrument that the entire piece comes out sounding as a cacophony instead of a symphony. Vivaldi was an innovative and demanding composer and this piece is one of the most difficult pieces to perform in the repertoire of music for the solo violin. I Musici have been world acclaimed leaders in performing Italian Baroque for over 50 years and have performed with many of the best musicians in this field. They emphasize more on a passionate Italian Romantic interpretation in its performances instead of a rigid Baroque one but reach a good balance with tradition by performing in the Italian style almost exclusively on Stradivarius instruments and within the size of a small Baroque chamber orchestra. The Stradivarius is the gem of traditional string instruments and really an instrument in and of itself that no other period instrument can even compare to. There are also really no chamber groups in existence that perform on so many Stradivari at once as they are simply too rare and even many professionals simply lack sufficient talent to play one proficiently.

Agostini's performance is one of the better performances by I Musici but it is definitely not the best the group ever performed. He actually does better than Ayo or Michelucci in the remaining concerti. It is not a great performance specifically of 'The Four Seasons' which is the most technically demanding and where Agostini starts to slip. It is still better than most of those by your typical chamber groups out there however. The best for I Musici if not across the board is its 1982 performance with Pina Carmirelli. Carmirelli's performance is extremely hard to find these days and sometimes ridiculously expensive so a close match by a comparable Italian chamber group is Salvatore Acardo's Stradivarius performance with I Solisti delle Settimane Musicali di Napoli which is available in abundance here on Amazon. Accardo himself had already played several times with I Musici before making his legendary performance with Il Solisti and had cultivated his talent to mastery. That peformance is the only close contender I can think of that comes even close to Carmirelli's passionate and legendary performance. Unless you are interested purely in symphonic interpretations, I would stick to either Carmirelli's performance or Accardo's as an alternative because the quality of their performances is exponentially superior to everyone elses' without question.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great performances of not-so-great music.......2005-07-01

That so many female composers have not been enabled to reach their potential is a great loss to all of us. No doubt we should be reaching into history to discover where female geniuses lay and give them their due, and endeavour not to repeat the mistake. But there is nothing in this collection to convince me that Alma Mahler was one of them.

The prime interest in Alma Mahler is her fascinating life, entwined as it was with Gustav Mahler; Zemlinsky; Kokoschka; Walter Gropius et al. Some mystery is created by the story of Gustav's conditioning their marriage on her ceasing to compose. But was it really any great loss?

These sixteen songs (all that survive of her compositions) are full of stock late-romantic gestures showing Zemlinksy's influence but none of his insight. Her understanding of many of the poems is questionable, as she sails past key moments with little inspiration and lingers in unimportant byways.

Full credit to Panula, who provided the orchestral arrangements and sensitively conducted the Tampere Philharmonic; and Paasikivi, a delightful mezzo; who present these curiosities in the best possible light. Such ideal performances are better than the music deserves. Three stars: an average of five for the performance and one for the music.

Outof Bellbuckle Tennesse Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike's album No Summer Storm is a cracker from end to end. Valerie has a voice of pure emotion in the studio and on the road where you can find her touring relentlessly across the United States and in Europe. No Summer Storm is the kind of bluegrass with balls that gets you up singing and dancing. Valerie is backed by a great band on the road and in the studio which includes songwriter in her own right Becky Buller, Daniel Hardin, Steve Mougin, John Wesley Lee and Mike Brubaker. You'll love this album if you like bluegrass that swings, dances and hits the mark. The title track a ballad by Lisa Aschmann is a killer and Tom T. Hall contributes Sit Down and Cry to the album and Valerie slays your heart with it. A must for bluegrass and country fans.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you sit up and take notice of these rising stars.......2003-06-15

Valerie Smith's third album, "No Summer Storm" is an exhilarating romp through a field of new traditional bluegrass. With a distinctive excitement and flair in her voice, Smith is part storyteller as she belts out songs about old Bill the sawmill man, young Sarah who is being counseled to wait awhile before marrying, or the loner Jacob Spence who murdered a man and did time. The title cut, "No Summer Storm" (written by Lisa Aschmann and Mark Simos) compares love to an ocean to be conquered. The same songwriters penned "I'm Lookin' for a Man"...who can stand his ground.

Nominated for IBMA's "Emerging Artist of 1999 and 2000," Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike are a band to watch and, of course, listen to. Smith has also been recognized by midwest bluegrass fans when she was nominated as SPBGMA's "Traditional Bluegrass Female Vocalist of the Year" award in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002.

The year 2001 was also a tough and tragic one for the group when they lost mandolinist Eddie Miller to an automobile accident. Miller and his brother John, former guitarist for Liberty Pike, can be heard on four of this album's 11 tracks. The album features a core group consisting of Liberty Pike's current lineup: Becky Buller, fiddle and vocals; Daniel Hardin, bass; John Wesley Lee, mandolin; Randall Conn, banjo and resonator guitar; and Stephen Mougin, guitar and vocals. Tom T. Hall guests on "Sit Down and Cry," playing guitar on a song he co-wrote with wife Dixie.

The album closes with Valerie and Kraig Smith's "Where the Bluebells Grow," a nostalgic tribute to their home in west Missouri. There is some excellent talent on this album, and the band presents some wonderful new material that will make you sit up and take notice of some of bluegrass music's rising stars, Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars No Summer Storm.......2003-03-01

Valerie Smith takes a good song and makes it great. She takes a great song and makes it a classic.

If you only buy one CD this year then it has to be Valerie's "No Summer Storm".

Her albums should come with a "Wallet" (for Americans.."Pocket Book" Warning)Once you have listened to her you will want to buy all her previous releases.

I can't wait for her next album release which is being laid down right now.

        5 out of 5 stars Really Great.......2004-09-03

One thing that has yet to be mentioned is that these are all art songs written by women composers. I am a big fan of both of the performers. I really like the first three pieces and Still by Gwenyth Walker. If you are a begginer or an old timer when it comes to art songs, this is a must!
The title is accually Ah love but a day, not American Art Songs

5 out of 5 stars music fan in southern Virginia.......2003-08-15

I LOVE this CD and have played it constantly since purchasing it. My favorite selection is Guide My Feet with Louise Toppin's amazing high voice. The purity and sheer height of her instrument are incredible. I have also really enjoyed hearing the rich baritone of Jay Pierson and excellent accompanying of John O'Brien. The repertoire is refreshing and musically presented by all three artists. I HIGHLY recommend this CD to all.

5 out of 5 stars North Hollywood Fan- Jay Pierson is Wonderful.......2002-09-14

This CD is lovely. Jay Pierson has a wonderful voice and the interpretation of his selections is stellar. I really love "Into the Night" and can listen to it over and over. I also think it is great that the female composers get their long overdue DO! I hope they somehow know that their music is not only being heard, but being performed beautifully. Toppin does a great job also, but I really love the baritone sound. Truly a beautiful CD!!! Thank you to both performers - but especially Pierson!

5 out of 5 stars great CD, but ms toppin was NOT on TOP.......2002-04-08

the fabulous baritone CLEARLY shared the spotlight with toppin. the repetoire throughout was quite distinguished and beautiful between both singers, but i could have done without toppin being listed as the FEATURED singer on this CD. this CD has one of the most elegant, musical, baritones that ive ever heard on it. the best song sung by toppin was "take me to the water" - it was quite emotional, per toppin's pure tone and child-like vocal character - perfect match. "into the night" is glorious, and "ah love but a day" is gorgeous. a beautiful beautiful CD .

        4 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2000-06-06

Louise Toppin sings some beautiful, though neglected repertoire. She is ably assisted by Jay Pierson and John O'Brien, but this is clearly her project. Definitely recommended!
