This is not a good account of Rachmaninoff's Vespers at all, especially in light of the numerous quality ones currently available. The good news, first, is that the notes about Rachmaninoff are rather interesting (although there are no texts) and there are one or two good low basses. That is not enough to recommend this, however.

The group suffers from balance and pitch problems throughout. Individual voices stick out, entire parts disappear, and the pitch wavers. Many of the singers use vibratos of their own devising and the effect is a very muddy texture. The recording quality itself is not good, with a lot of audible background noise, and the cumulative effect of all of this extraneous sound removes any atmosphere from the work. The tenor soloist is also suspect. He bellows his lines in a jarring and unpleasant manner, goes sharp from time to time, and even changes the words slightly in V.

I bought this on a high recommendation from a magazine and I have no idea how or why it got that good rating. The performance is nowhere near Chernushenko's, Cleobury's, or other fine recordings available. Perhaps the CD was made before those others, but as the field now stands, this recording is severely lacking. Don't waste your money.
