5 out of 5 stars Sutherland/Pavarotti sublime.......2003-06-04

If you can't afford the full set of Rigoletto, this is the way to go. I have about 10 versions of this opera which is one of my all time favorites.
This Rigoletto is supreme. Sutherland sings up a storm, tossing of high D's and E's with extreme ease. Her trill is a marvel indeed. She is completely match with a young Pavarotti that matches Dame Joan's gorgeous voice. Pavarotti's high D is stunning.
The only competition with this Rigoletto is the one with Callas.
But Callas can't touch Sutherland in voice or technique.
In conclusion, this is the Rigoletto to get if you only want the highlights.

One word....FABULOUS! I've nearly worn it out! If you're new to opera, buy this; it's a sure hit!

5 out of 5 stars flawless.......2000-08-14

flawless singing by dame Joan and Pavorotti. beautiful recording.

5 out of 5 stars A most recomended Rigoletto.......2000-08-08

There is no equall to Pavarotti as the duke. No doubt. You'll hear no better "questa o quella" and no better "bella figlia dellamore" This alone is a good reason to buy this disc. Sutherland, as brilliant as ever, gives the best "caro nome" I've heard, and Milnes is an exellent Rigoletto. The "supporting" roles are sung beautifully, all and all a great recording, with one flaw - Richard Bonyng is no Verdi conductor. He should stick to bell canto. His conducting makes few of the duets, trios and quartets less pretty than they could have been. but mostly he doesn't harm the music much, and he conducts the solos well. All and all - the best rigoletto I've heard. Buy!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not quite enough Rigoletto.......2007-07-11

Julius Rudel perpetuates a heavy, turgid pace with the Philharmonia Orchestra, which is in commendable tune. The opening prelude is especially excellent, with the dreadful opening chords hinting at the mocking jester Rigoletto's pitiable kismet. Alfredo Kraus lacks the dripping sex appeal of Plácido Domingo and the heartiness of Luciano Pavarotti; nonetheless, he depicts a petite, youthful Duca di Mantova, which is not entirely without charm. He juggles "Questa o quella" and "La donne è mobile" with ease, but his most stupendous moments are with Sills in Act I ("È il sol dell'anima") and with the courtiers in Act II ("Possente amor mi chiama"). The late, great Beverly Sills has often been criticized for shrieking her roles, particularly near the latter days of her career. Sills has never shrieked a day in her life; for one to carp Sills thus would be to voraciously lacerate and crucify Maria Callas. However, Sills is, to be fair, not in her prime, but she offers a lovely, if occasionally chirpy, performance as Gilda. Her mature reading of "Caro nome" is charming.

Sherrill Milnes, a denizen of the roles of Amonasro, Giorgio Germont, and other Verdi baritone roles, offers a gruff Rigoletto. His performance of "Cortigiani, vil razza donnata" may leave one slightly disappointed; one should reference his preferable rendition for Richard Bonynge with Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland. Samuel Ramey gives a disappointing performance as Sparafucile; the illustrious American bass-baritone might have made an interesting Rigoletto, but the vile assassin Sparafucile is a role sculpted for the likes of Nicolai Ghiaurov, Martti Talvela, and Ivo Vinco. Mignon Dunn is a deplorable Maddalena. She reminds one of a squawking crow trying to sound like a siren; one can now understand the phrase "shockingly horrible." Where is Shirley Verrett? Where is Fiorenza Cossotto?

In short, this is a set of highlights worth having in reference to the price, but Rigoletto is an opera which should be presented in its entirety for any listener to fully enjoy and appreciate.

1 out of 5 stars Old maid, shrieker!.......2004-05-20

This Gilda sounds like an old maid, shrieking her way through Verdi's music. What a disgrace, she sounds like a hag!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Enough Rigoletto When You Think About It.......2003-12-27

This recording, which offers only the highlights from Verdi's dark opera Rigoletto, is a fine studio recording with good singers and good orchestration when you really think about it. It's true that the lead singers are past their primes and their vocals, though well-trained and dramatically convincing, do not pack a punch as good as they used to in their salad days of the 60's. Only Sherril Milnes and Samuel Ramey, both baritones, deliver a noteworthy performance. Samuel Ramey is in fine singing condition and he had only been singing professionally very recently. In fact, if you are a fan of Ramey, this would count as one of his oldest recordings and his voice is superb here. This is a recording dating from 1978. By then, Beverly Sills and Alfredo Kraus were much older (Sills was approaching her fifties and Alfredo Kraus had also past his glory days as tenor) but nonetheless this is a well delivered opera recording as a whole. It can get you interested the entire opera and perhaps when you do buy the whole opera you can get superior singers and a much loved recording. It's a sort of "introduction" to opera. The same can apply to the recordings of "Barber Of Seville" and "La Traviata", also under the baton of maestro Julius Rudel and starring Beverly Sills- which were also made in the late 70's.

The strength of Verdi's Rigoletto lies squarely on its powerful drama. The tragic plot revolves around a court jester (Rigoletto- Milnes) who is employed in the service of an extremely decadent and corrupt Duke (Kraus). The Duke's first aria shows him to be a womanizer (Questo e Quella) along the lines of Don Giovanni. When Rigoletto insults a deformed guest at the Duke's party Monterrone, Rigoletto is cursed. Later, the curse comes into effect when the Duke seduces Rigoletto's daughter Gilda (Sills) only to rape her and toss her aside for his next conquest. When Rigoletto hears of the Duke's awful crime from Gilda herself, he vows revenge. He hires a hit man Sparafucile (Samuel Ramey) who accidentally has Gilda killed instead. The Duke gets away with his awful behavior scot-free and in Rigoletto's last lines he remembers the curse (La Maldizione!). This dark plot was Verdi's newest attempt to provide characters that were neither dark or light, good or bad but falling in a more flawed and human middle ground. Rigoletto inadvertently has killed his own daughter and the evil Duke goes unpunished. It is a character study on the character of Rigoletto- mainly his desire for revenge.

This recording is worth buying. It's an affordable, even budget price and has its moments. For a soon to be 50 Beverly Sills she does manage to pull off an impressive Gilda - frail, innocent and daydreaming of romance. Nowhere is this more vividly expressed than in her aria "Gualter Made". Sills' soaring, light legato is beautiful to hear. Though she is a mature sounding soprano by the time of this recording, she still does a great job, coming into the very same ground that sopranos like June Anderson and even the ultimate diva Maria Callas walked- both Anderson and Callas sang Gilda, even if the role is calling for a vulnerable, teenage-sounding kind of soprano, All in all a great recording. And Julius Rudel conducts with superb aplomb...especially noteworthy is the exchange of recitatives between Milnes and Ramey early in the opera which is underscored by strings. And the finale is to die for.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2002-02-17

This Rigoletto is absolutely wonderful. Rudel conducted firmly but not magnificently, but the cast is magnificent. Milnes (also the title role in the Rigoletto with Sutherland and Pavarotti) is the best ever, no doubt. Always touching and powerful, his acting is amazing (if only there was a Milnes/Callas version!) and his screams of "Gilda! Gilda!" are unrivalled. Alfredo Kraus isn't an incredible actor but his creamy, youthful tone is perfect with the added bonus of a high D in "Possente amor." (Only Pavarotti, by the way, attempted this on any of the recordings I've heard - Domingo, di Stefano, and del Monaco are among those that cut the aria or went for the lower note.) Sills is an extremely convincing Gilda even if, at times, like Callas and Sutherland, she sounds too mature. If you want an incredible Rigoletto and duke, go for this. Gilda . . . well, Sills is great but I prefer Cotrubas or Gueden.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful cast.......2001-10-13

This 1978 studio recording of Rigoletto stars a cast that brings energy and life into all its wonderful music. I have to admit that Beverly Sills's vioce is getting a little old here, in fact she is way past her prime, she doesn't have that signature endless top range. That said she pulls off a Gilda very close to that of Callas and Anderson. Kraus is in a role that he was born to play, his vioce is on top form here with all the sparkle of incredible tops c's. Then there is Milnes who turns a Rigoletto that is yet to be matched. His vioce brings up all the anger and rage that Gobbi brought to this charater years before. This set is a wonderful deal, great music at a great price.

Her recording of Caro Nome is quite fascinating, in part because you have to wonder if it was a very good choice for her voice. Even though it is bit out of her fach, she pulls it off masterfully. Her Depuis le Jour is, in my opinion, the quintessential recording of that aria, as are her La Mamma Morte, Je Dis, Marietta's Lied, and the Liebestod. The orchestras, under the batons of four different conductors, all compliment her voice perfectly with rich interpretations and lush dynamics which allow her to take the listener on a truly unforgettable muscical journey. I value this recording as the most valuable in my posession, and every opera-lover and listener of classical music in general should have a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Unreservedly Marvelous.......2000-07-30

Leontyne Price singing this collection is, for one thing, fascinating because it is a taste of what could have been. These arias are from operas that she didn't perform or sing complete. And that doesn't mean they are stolid, quite the opposite. In fact, there are some arias that I would claim, set the standard on how great an interpretation can get! Caro nome from Rigoletto, is a case in point. Callas and Sutherland do magnificent and very different interpretations of this aria, but Price comes in with yet again a take radically different than either of theirs. It has a wonderful structure that unfolds with nuance, her tone is warm, heartfelt and absolutely limpid in the stratospheric highs-it's a perfect mesh between the lyrics (of sighing, flying, and adoring) and the quality and tone of her singing. She creates a haunting, bittersweet, and ravishing image in Korngold's Marietta's Lied, again accomplishing a marriage between the lyrics and the voice. Her Dido from Purcell is the most moving and beautiful aria I have ever heard, its out of time and place. One more aria that is the best interpretation I have heard is Dvorak's Song to the Moon. With all the rest of the arias she comes through with flying colors. Perhaps with the Liebestod, there will be a few other sopranos with superior takes. The sound is very good; the conducting is not consistent due to the four different conductors. But overall the collection is sincere, fascinating, and amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Justice at last ..........2006-01-04

I really wanted the Pavarotti/Gruberova/Wixell recording of this opera, having seen it on film, but Decca has never seen fit to release the soundtrack on CD (VHS and DVD are available and it was even released on video disc - if you remember those). It was this film version that introduced me the magnificent Edita Gruberova, who if anything here shines even brighter in this offering from Philips. Gilda is placed right at the centre of this work (as it should be) and her Caro Nome remains probably my all time favourite recording of the coloratura soprano voice. Very rarely have I seen fit to buy 'the same' disc twice, but at last this highlights package (remastered) includes the Duke's aria Questa O Quella, which was inexplicably omitted from the original highlights release. I always found Schicoff a little lightweight in the role of the Duke (perhaps explaining the 'cut' notes mentioned by a previous reviewer), but somehow the inclusion now of this piece rounds out the character more and prepares you for his later somewhat wistful rendition of La Donna e Mobile. Bruson I find a magnificent Rigoletto, different but the equal in every respect of Wixell. His growing pain is palpable. Beautifully orchestrated by Sinopoli, with a strong supporting cast, this recording on the Philips budget series(so no liner notes/synopsis) is well worth seeking out.

4 out of 5 stars Sinopoli's Individualistic but effective Rigoletto.......2005-07-05

This is a collection of highlights from the complete production and the choices are well picked and pretty generous with a recording time of 71 minutes.
Sinopoli is very individualistic and unconventional in his interpretive ideas as he has a tendency to be expansive in his tempos and pacing like in the prelude but he does it effectively as it creates sizzling tension.
Sinopoli is very musical with this opera as he gets the orchestra to phrase eloquently making the orchestral contribution a vital force to the storytelling.
Neil Shicoff sounds very italian in his style as he exhibits extremely heroic and passionate singing along with a sharp portrait of the rotten womanizing duke.
Gruberova is a virtouso soprano as she handles Gilda's vocal pyrotechnics with an effortless ease meanwhile convincingly conveying the vulnerablity and gullible foolery of Gilda.
Gruberova is a complete artist who also has an angelic tone similar to a Lucia Popp but with more vocal body.
Renato Bruson does a good job with Rigoletto but he doesn't have the most dazzling voice like a Leonard Warren or a Sherril
    Milnes.
His voice is very dark toned and rich but he does a good job at conveying the pathetic and vengeful Rigoletto even though i would have liked a little more passion in his delivery of the famous "Cortigiani, vil razza dannata" aria and a little more rage in his rendition of "Si, vendetta".
Now the low points of this interpretation are few but significant.
"La donna e' Mobile's" final high c is cut and the high d at the end of "Bella figlia dell' amore" is also cut resulting in a real let down as you expect to hear the climactic thrilling vocal fireworks.
I don't know whether this was Verdi's original intention but when you've heard those vocal peaks all your life you expect it!
The other low point of this highlights cd is that there is ABSOLUTELY no synopsis, story, or track by track details.
    ABSOLUTELY nothing!
How is anybody supposed to know what the heck is going on unless you've been previously exposed to the opera.
Eloquence made a major screw up with this senseless decision.
Oh well, it's still well performed for the most part and comes at budget price so it still might be enticing enough...
    You make the choice.
I hope this review was helpful to you and happy opera hunting.

ok, Protti is not great, but not bad either...and ofcourse, Kraus is consistent and proves to be a prince among tenors...but it is d'Angelo who really makes this live recording... her Caro Nome is ABSOLUTELY EXQUISITE...we don't get live singing like that these days (I've heard Andrea Rost, R.A. Swenson, et al)...d'Angelo's shaping of the musical line is to die for as are her timbre and sense of drama...the death scene is also unforgettable...get this, and you'll understand what I'm talking about!
