Handel's Greatest Hits.......2007-02-26

I found this recording disappointing in many respects. The sound quality was much lower than expected, especially on track 7 "Largo" which on the origional, Ormandy had created such a quiet grandeur. In trach 11 "Let the Bright Seraphim" Wynton Marsalis overpowered the singing of Edita Gruberova, whereas the music should always be the backup of the singer, and not vice versa. I don't know what happened to the "Hallelujah Chorus," but it didn't come off very well at all.

All Handel's Greatest Hits are not created equal........2004-02-25

Nothing else tops this unusually gorgeous rendering. Leppard's is the finest conducting of Handel to this reviewers ears. Especially the Xerxes Largo and the Watermusic
Hornpipes and Fireworks Oveurture tempi, legato and orchestration is full of warmth and energy. A true chiara scuro interpretation. Fabulous!!!!

This collection of George Frideric Handel's "Greatest Hits" leans more heavily towards "The Water Music Suite" than his oratorical work, which is my only serious complaint about this CD as an introduction to the composer's work. Although is does have "See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes" from Judas Maccabaeus and ends with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing the "Hallelujah Chorus," it does not have "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Messiah, which I consider a glaring omission. The "new" piece for me on this CD that is a nice discovery is "Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine)," performed by Wynton Marsalis and the English Chamber Orchestra.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Slawson does it again!.......2003-11-05

One of my favourite things has been to listen to transcriptions of Bach for non-traditional instruments, or even for different instruments. Many of us have heard of --and listened to-- Switched-On Bach by Walter Carlos. And of course lots of artists transcribe for their own instrument, like James Galway does. Yo-yo Ma did a beautiful set of transcriptions of Bach arias in Simply Baroque recently (highly recommended, all of these).

Brian Slawson
This artist is a percussionist, with a wonderful sense of what works with Bach. I recognize there are different kinds of purists, with different levels of tolerance for ways in which Bach music is 'stretched.' For instance, I really cannot tolerate *harmonic* stretching of Bach. (It's only rarely that modified Bach harmony seems acceptable to me, but surprisingly, there have been instances.) Slawson's transcriptions are harmonically faithful. (There are some odd sounds, due to the peculiar acoustics of such things as bells. The overtones of bells, as you might hear, are characteristically different from those of instruments such as winds and strings. Actually, the piano has somewhat of the same problem, in milder form.)

Brian Slawson transcribes Bach for percussion. He uses all sorts of percussion, from tubular bells to steel drums, to synthesizer. It is interesting always, and often wonderful. Each track has to be assessed separately, since the treatment varies from track to track, even between one repeat and the next.

The first CD I bought of Slawson's was Bach on Wood, which seems to have since become somewhat of a classic. It is available used through Amazon, on a label which seems to belong to the Sony/CBS family. This CD contains a number of pieces by Bach and others, the crowning glory of which is the Quodlibet from the Goldberg Variations. Every single note is there, lovingly played through the magic of multi-layering, --or maybe this fellow can do it all in real time. Percussionists must be marvellously skillful people!

Recently I acquired Bach Beat, apparently his third effort. Slawson has returned to the High Baroque. Not surprising, given the rhythmic excitement of music of that period. Composers represented are Bach, Handel, Purcell and Vivaldi. The tracks are:

1. Brandenburg Concerto No. 3
This is the last movement. Compare with Walter Carlos's treatment. I think Slawson is a little more fun!

2. Organ Concerto No. 2, BMW 593
3. G-Minor Minuet

This is the last movement from orchestral suite number 2 in B minor, which is fun done in almost any transcription.

6. B-Minor Minuet
7. Hornpipe
The brilliant Alla Hornpipe from the Watermusic. Not the best version I've heard, but still very good.

8. Sarabande
A well-known Handel Sarabande, repeated a few times too often ...

9. Galoppiére
A rollicking tune from the Royal Fireworks. Very nice!

This is the intense C minor prelude, I believe, from the Well-Tempered Clavier. However it's played, it feels as though your head's getting a pounding. The name is appropriate. It sounds wonderful on percussion. (Have an aspirin handy!)

All the tracks are at least a lot of fun. Many are really fantastic. One track, in particular --I think it's 12-- is a wonderfully sly treatment of the A minor 2-part invention. This one made me chuckle! You simply have to hear it!

Another Success.......2005-02-11

Continuing my organ reviews...this is number four of a long series by Christopher Herrick entitled ORGAN FIREWORKS (I think we are up to ten albums now). The series is notable for several reasons - the numerous offerings (famous and unknown), the breadth of organs played and the superb musicianship heard. Mr. Herricks is a performer of distinction, having recorded Bach's entire oeuvre in fourteen successive days!! He is equally at home in the Germanic and Gallic traditions though he seems to favor the former.

The French works would be vastly improved if heard on one of the fabulous Cavaille-Coll organs. In my opinion, the one at Rouen is the greatest instrument of its kind in the world for breadth of tonal range. How I would love to hear the Toccata di Concerto on one the famous organs! The Guilmant offered here is pithy, not worthy of the group. Louis Vierne's free-style composition had the right touch of virtuosity of both playing and registration demanded by many of his works.

My one complaint is that many of the tracks presented here are too abbreviated. They only whet the appetitite in what is seems is an appeal to the modern inability to concentrate longer than a few minutes without change. I would have preferred a better grouping of the FIREWORKS but they seems to have evolved just as the music for organs did.

Herrick at his best! The Aeolian-Skinner organ at St.Bartholomew's is the greatest and the finest instrument of NYC. The sound is astonishing! No doubt this is my favourite CD of this wonderful series together with "Organ Fireworks II" recorded at Royal Albert Hall, London. Buy it!

Excellent, comprehensive overview of Handel's works.......2005-01-08

Philips offers a comprehensive overview of the works of George Frideric Handel, featuring a variety of conductors (Marriner, Maazel, Colin Davis, etc.) This 2-CD set includes 43 tracks spanning over 2.5 hours, and provides an excellent introduction to Handel. The "hits" are here: "Solomon - Arrival of the Queen of Sheba," "Water Music," "Messiah," and "Music for the Royal Fireworks." Equally impressive are (relatively) lesser known works such as "Chaconne in G," "Zadok the Priest - Coronation Anthem," and "Serse - Largo."

Handel's versatility will astound the novice listener. His compositional virtuosity and ingenuity transcend a variety of arrangements and tone colors, including works for full orchestra, chamber pieces, oratorios, and music for harp, piano, organ and guitar.

The recordings are top-notch and the performances are consistently excellent. Despite spanning nearly three decades of recorded works, the production values are remarkably cohesive; this compilation is a masterpiece of digital mastering.

If you're willing to invest a little extra money and time to familiarize yourself with one of the all-time great composers, "The Best of Handel" will reward you with years of enjoyment. I was a casual fan of Handel before receiving this CD as a gift nearly four years ago. Now, Handel ranks as one of my favorites (along with Beethoven, Bach and Chopin) - thanks largely to this brilliant compilation.

This is a great collection of classics that are wonderfully executed. A nice addition to any classical library.

Pachebel in Taco Bell.......2002-03-29

You know what would be funnier than Pachabel in the woods, or Pachabel with whale noises, or Pachabel with the sounds of the rainforest in a snowstorm on a July day with a couple camels giving birth? Pachabel in Taco Bell. I would buy that CD.

I'd just like to point out the fact that Pachebel is far and away the worst, most overrated, most boring classical piece ever written. And if it wasn't before, it has been played so much, on so many occasions, with so many stupid accompaniments (yes, this includes with whale noises) that it is now. You want a beautiful piece? I give you Barbar's Adagio for Strings. I give you Meditation from Thais. I'll even give you sentimental, sappy garbage like Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. Just please, for the sake of good taste everywhere, put down that Pachebel CD.

A great assortment of classical masterpieces........2001-06-27

This is definitely a fabulous cd to add to one's classical collection, especially due to the fact that it contains one of the best versions of Pachelbel's well-known "Canon" in addition to some of his other works. Various historic composers of classical music are well represented here, from Bach and his Brandenburg Concerto to Antonio Vivaldi's "Autumn" from the Four Seasons. Many of the pieces are played by string instruments, such as the "Canon," which is professionally performed by a string quartet. Overall, the Baroque period of classical period tends to be the main concentration of this cd. This cd offers listeners the valuable opportunity to be introduced to classical music that has been played for centuries throughout the world.
