5 out of 5 stars Excellent value.......2001-04-18

This is a great CD of popular operatic love duets, my favorites being the last duet from Traviata and the magnificent extended duet from Tosca. I love this CD so much that I am very tempted to get to know most of the operas featured in more detail. Very enjoyable!!

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation but the title's a misnomer........2006-07-14

I agree that this--and Essential Opera 2--is a very good collection for opera lovers and opera beginners alike, but am afraid I can't agree that this is "essential" opera. Where is Maria Callas in the line-up? Absent Maria, any opera collection that deems itself "essential" deludes itself. Callas is as indispensable to opera as, say, Picasso is to cubism.

The misnomer is made the more stark and jarring when one sees that a contemporaneous rival, Renata Tebaldi, is given two tracks to sing and the Divina Absoluta, none. Tebaldi was Callas' rival like Clementi was Mozart's--whoever remembers the rivals now? History has judged well who the masters are. So I listen to arias in this CD--arias that Callas have incomparably performed like Tosca's Vissi d'Arte, La Wallys's Ebben Ne'andro Lontana"--to disappointment.

I'd give this disc five stars if not for Callas' omission, a fatal mistake for an opera collection that aspires to be "essential."

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to opera!.......1998-12-19

This CD is full of the most accessible works from the world of opera by some of the greatest performers. Several of the selections have been used in popular media(commercials, movies etc.)so they may be familiar. The liner notes give full details of the operas from which the pieces are selected. I find this an excellent gift for my opera-phobic friends and for children. The performances are top notch and the arrangement of pieces on the CD is well thought out.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Don.......2006-12-07

I've heard several Dons. Giulini is one the most overrated recording in history; Karajan is dull; both Furtwangler are great, but the sound are hard to listen to; Davis is ok, but doesn't thrill me that much.

This one is clearly the winner. Not only because of Raimondi and Van Dam (both great); but mainly due to the great female cast. Te Kanawa sings here much better than on the Davis record. She is Dona Elvira! Even Schwarzkopf didn't impress me after have listened to this record. Edda Moser and Teresa Berganza are also unbelievable. Just listen to "Forse Un Giorno" or "Vedrai, Carino" to understand what I mean.

This may not be the best opera record ever record, but it is the one that I've listened the most.

My second Don is the Klemperer recording. It is a great recording, but the female cast doesn't compare to this one.

5 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2006-12-06

Mozart Opera, I believe takes a little getting used to (I've only heard this and Figaro). That said, if your brand new to opera, look at something by Verdi or Puccini, come back to Mozart and his continuo when your ready. Opera is for regular people, but this (to me) is like starting at the 200 level. Aside from that, this is great, no complaints here from a regular person. See my reviews, fellow opera neophytes...and keep me updated!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection from the film and, perhaps, opera.......2006-11-16

I'm not much for opera. I attend one in concert every 5-10 years and don't own a single recording of any opera. I own collections from my favorites that I've seen live -- "Don Giovanni", "Barber of Seville", "Otello" and "Fidelio".

I've owned several collections of highlights from "Don Giovanni", which is to opera what Beethoven's 9th is to symphonies. I've also seen it in performance twice and saw Karajan conduct it live once on PBS. What shocked me most about the latter were two things: the titanic Karajan was a short guy, probably about 5-5, and appeared a dwarf on stage after the production; and the final scene, where the Don goes to Hell, was constructed electronically with bizarre concentric circles into which the Don was swallowed and disappeared. The final go to Hell scene in the film "Amadeus" is much better.

I don't know what the final scene is like in this performance since I've never seen the movie. But I've savored the "soundtrack" for almost three decades. It is clearly the best work Lorin Maazel has ever done, better than his 1960s Tchaikovsky and Sibelus symphonies, the second and third best things he's ever done.

When first I bought this highlight package the Internet was still a military-only operation and the score was not available in USA. Eschewing a scratchy LP in 1979, I bought the chrome cassette from a British dealer. I later burned a high quality CD from my cassette. You, of course, have the advantage of both the Internet and the availability of this wonderful music here in a direct to CD recording.

This is a dramatic telling of the story of Don Juan, his ribald antics, his contribution to the death of a woman and her father, and his comeuppance when one of the most bizarre figures in all art -- the commendatore -- comes to life and sentences him to Hell, where the Don goes in a blazing scene.

Raimondi's Don is dramatic and dynamic and he sings the part very well. The other members of the cast, Edda Moser as Donna Anna, Kiri Te Kanawa as Donna Elvira, Kenneth Riegel as Don Ottavio, Jaoyn Macurdy as the Commendatore, Jose Van Dam as Leporello, Malcom King as Masetto and a then not well-known Teresa Berganza as Zerlina -- are, in a word, wonderful. The singing on this collection is beyond criticism and continues to stand up to the best recorded accounts almost 30 years later.

The sound on this recording is very good, natural and captured as if taken from a staged recording. No accommodation is needed for the sound, which is five by five and warm. If you want an introduction to the wonders of "Don Giovanni" you can't do better than this.

5 out of 5 stars A very fine performance, lacking only a charismatic Don.......2006-09-13

Perhaps because it is only the soundtrack to Joseph Losey's film of the opera, this Don Giovanni has never come into its own. The cast is the best on records, barring only EMI's classic set under Giulini. It was prescient of Maazel to gather up young singers who would soon be major stars like Te Kanawa--gorgeous as Donna Elvira--and Eda Moser, who's dramatically intense as Donna Anna, despite some pitch problems. Ruggero Raimondi as a suave Don and Jose Van Dam as a bitter, insidious Leporello are quite fine, as is Teresa Berganza as Zerlina. Only the wobbly Kenneth Riegel disappoints as Don Ottavio, but hardly anyone succeeds vocally in the fiendish arias assigned to him.

Maazel pulls no perverse punches. He's mostly straightforward, although at times he takes pains to underline the drama for the camera, which is all to the good. From the fierce opening scene you'd think this was going to be an angry, thuggish Don (I wish it had been), but soon Raimondi lapses into smooth, somewhat bland singing that emphasizes mellifluous tone over character. Too bad, since everything else is outstanding. Sony's sonics are fine, and the orchestra plays very well.

In sum, this almost great Don Giovanni deserves a listen. It's among the best on the market, lacking only a charismatic Don to rise to the very top. If you object to Wachter's brutishness on the Giulini set or dislike the gloss of Karajan's conducting on the stary DG set, this one from Maazel may turn into a first choice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-05-08

I just bought this set and I am very impressed. To start off I am a very big fan of the soprano and baritone voice. In addition to this I am of the belief that Kiri Te Kanawa and Ruggiero Raimondi can do no wrong when it comes to singing, so naturally it was not very hard for me to decide which Don Giovanni to add to my collection.

This set does not dissapoint. Both the Don and Elvira are in exceptional voice. In addition to this rest of the cast is terrific. Donna Anna, sung by Edda Moser, is truly remarkable especially in her first aria. I have read other reviews about her singing of this role and it seems that the reviewers are split in half. One half seems to think her Wagnerian sounding voice is far too heavy and aggressive for this role while the other half seems to find her perfect. Although, I must admit there are others that I have listened to and enjoyed just as much as Moser, it is nice to be able to hear "Or sai che l'onore" sung as though the soprano has just deiscoverd some horrifying fact and is ready to take action against it rather than faint. True, singing anything softer than forte is an alien concept to this woman, I feel that most people will be duly impressed.

Besides, if you do not enjoy Edda Moser's voice then any buyer can be certain to have loads of fun with Teresa Berganza, who sings the role of Zerlina. To put it plainly Berganza's singing and interpretation of this role may exceed even that of Bartoli's, who is yet another singer I firmly believe does no wrong when it comes to music.

The rest of the cast is also excellent. Don Ottavio, Leporello, and Masetto are all sung and portrayed as well as any. Overall this is a fine set and is well worth the purchase

5 out of 5 stars The Best Don Giovanni On Record.......2004-09-15

Everyone has their pick of their favorite Don Giovanni, and recordings which they consider to be the ultimate. For me, this 1979 studio recording, which was also the soundtrack for the Joseph Losey film, is the greatest on record. It has the right voices for the dark and witty drama that is Don Giovanni, the right orchestration and there is a certain magic to the whole thing that is going to leave you an opera fan for life. Ruggero Raimond sings the role of the Don. He is convincing both as a singer and an actor, bringing life to the dark, predatory, perverted, scheming character. Don Giovanni is a wolf disguised as a gentleman. He is charming, elegant but beneath his mantle of aristocratic nobility, he is the Devil incarnate. His music, mostly through recitatives (he gets only a toast aria "Finc al vino" and a Serenade "Vieni A La Finestra"of elegance) is full of wit, sophisticated humor and bawdy ribald perversion. He is a man whore, who delights in making love to all women of any age, shape or size (but never twice). He is anti-marriage even anti-romantic love. He was married briefly to Dona Elvira who is still demanding her rights as a wife and follows him everywhere, obscessed with him, attempting to regain his love, warning other women of his deception and betrayal. The role of Dona Elvira is sung by Kiri Te Kenawa who is in excellent late 70's voice, her dramatic inflections are perfect for the role. Actually, she makes a convincing and less cartoonish Elvira. Dona Elvira is usually played quite histerically and even comically but Kiri Te Kenawa plays her with a dignity of her own. If she is dramatic it is because she is madly in love with Don Giovanni and conflicted. She has a love/hate relationship with him.

Donna Ana is performed by Edda Moser. A German soprano of lyric dramatic coloratura, she has the perfect category of voice for Dona Ana the way she ought to be sung. Nowadays it's popular for a light lyric soprano to sing the role, as Renee Fleming has done. But I am pretty sure Mozart intended for her to be a dramatic soprano with a heavier voice that is nevertheless lyric, beautiful, full of pianissimo and high top register. There is one coloratura aria "A Forse Un Giorno Il Cielo" and dramatic lines in her recitatives. Right from the start, she is screaming in horror as she discovers her father has been killed by Don Giovanni. There are also moments in which the dramatic music compliment the dramatic outbursts such as the moment when she recognizes Don Giovanni as the man who tried to rape her. "O Dei ! O Gods!" she cries. There is an intense quality to the aria "Or Sai Che L'Onore" in which she is resolved that Don Ottavio take revenge against the Don. Edda Moser has a Wagnerian voice that is quite good for Dona Ana, especially because in this "version" she has some feelings of temptation for the Don which she is vigorously fighting to kill.

Lorin Maazel is a good conductor, even if he makes an excess of strings and conducts some moments such as the Act I finale at a faster pace. Jose Van Dam is a perfect support for Raimondi as Leporello, the faithful, clever and comic servant. His basso buffo voice is perfect for the role. Zerlina is sung by the adorable Teresa Berganza who has a sweet, lyric voice and who plays the almost seduced peasant girl with great conviction. In the end, she loves Masetto and will not betray him. Malcom King's Masetto is quite good, adorably jealous. Jon Macurdy has a terrifying voice as the Commandatore. This is the perfect Don Giovanni. What are you waiting for ? See the movie and get this soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars If only............2004-05-07

This recording is exciting no doubt but it has a serious flaw- the sound. All of Mozart's orchestral brillance reduced to mush with the exaggerrated acoustics. An engineering disaster not helped by Maazels excessive use of string. Having said that wow- the singing catches fire. This version is comes close to comparing with the legendary Guilini recording with Schwartkoft and Sutherland. Kiri te Kanawa is phenomenal!!!. Very rarely does she sound so convincing dramatically but she is heavenly in this recording. Ah che di mai, Inquali eccesi, Masker's trio, Ah Fuggi.. are all sung excellently with a full throated creamy tone as golden as the morning sun and as smooth as silk. Not a note out of place or scooped. Schwartkopf occassional shows her troubles with Mozart- esp in Inquali eccesi but otherwise she is commanding. Her's is the more compelling potrait but te Kanawa outshines her in all other aspects of the role- youthful brilliance coupled with a voice that is truly unforgettable.

In the 1970's te Kanawa as a lyric soprano had no equal esp in Mozart. Freni, Riciarelli, Tomowa Sintow, Cotrubas, Popp comes nowhere near and four of her Mozart recordings then deserves to be ranked as some of the most sensational recordings ever committed to disc ( along with her Grammy award Four Lasts Songs ). Of her many Mozartian potraits; Fiordiligi and Pamina with Lombard and her Figaro with Boehm, this Elvira has to be the most breathtaking and quintessential of all. Her incredible voice, the manner of her delivery and the warmth of her superlative singing is magical.

Edda Moser is a wondefully dramatic Anna, not always focused and she sounds positively insecure in her entrance. Sutherland is incomparable. I find her 'Or sai' tellingly dramatic. Berganza is lovely and she manages the high tessitura well.

The men lack something of the spark in comparison. Van Dam is a most aristocratic Leporello. Terfel is more believable. Raimondi is commanding- his is the most sexually appealling of all recordings. Maazel has wonderful moments but tends to rush much of Mozart's orchestral colour.

5 out of 5 stars Like Amadeus, Terrific! A Must have!.......2001-08-03

If you have seen the 1984 Milos Forman Best Picture Amadeus, you would have seen the Commandatore Scene from Don Giovanni. This soundtrack is to the 1979 film version of the opera, with the great conductor Lorin Maazel at the baton, Kiri Te Kenawa, Edda Moser, Berganza and Van Dam putting in their talents. This is a great performance, and if you loved the film, this is a must have. Dark, comic, it is Mozart's finest Italian opera. Popular for its beautiful melodies, such as "La Ci Darem La Mano" "Viva La Libertad " the Don's lusty champagne aria "Finch hal Del Vino" and of course the climatic encounter with the Commandatore, Don Giovanni remains one of the world's greatest operas. Before you listen to all the other recordings, try this one out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Of course, Maazel fans might appreciate it better, as well as fans of Te Kenawa and Moser.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best by a long shot.......2001-05-09

Frankly, this is very overated recording, as is the so-called legendary Gulini. Best in my view are a) Josef Krips (Decca) and Mitropoulos (Sony Classics). The latter is live, which this opera can take and in fact it adds to the frisson and excitement particularly in the final act. And the singers. Nobody has yet bettered Grummer, or Della Casa as Donna Anna or Donna Elivira. Hear them and you won't be able to listen to others doing this opera. The sound for a 1956 recording is excellent as is the Krips one which was recorded around 1959. In both recordings Siepi is the Don and his voice is a marvellous mixture of suave, erotic and downright sinister. In short he encompases the whole role. Do yourself a favour and get BOTH these recordings.

1 out of 5 stars Poor transfers.......2007-03-09

The reason for the wide discrepancy in reviews for this cd: several distinguished performances, but the sound on most tracks is very primitive. This is due to the digitalization process used: AAD. Nowadays, this almost never occurs; pre-digital recordings are digitally remastered, and designated as ADD. AAD cd's are carelessly transferred, and sound much worse than the original LP-intended records--tubby, ill-balanced, strange overtones, uneven volumes, raw and overblown. This early practice caused many to believe that cd could not reproduce sound comparable to vinyl.

CBS/Sony should be ashamed to present these performances in such poor sound, when a modern remastering could easily have been done. Szell, Walter, Casadesus and others would never have approved such shoddy releases, but they are long gone, and their artistic legacies are here trashed. This disc is a slap in the face to some of the finest performing musicians of the 20th century.

3 out of 5 stars A poor substitute for the original soundtrack.......2000-01-13

Well, that's what I get for trying to save a few bucks....the original soundtrack to the film Amadeus is three times the price of this CD, so I decided to go with my cheapskate instincts and buy this one, thinking it would be pretty much the same as the soundtrack. Let me prevent you from making the same mistake I did--it isn't! Maybe I just got used to hearing the songs in a certain way from the film, but some of these renditions don't even sound like the same songs. For example, the Symphony # 5 (K. 183) cut is played at a tempo that is so fast, it is tiring to listen to. Some of the songs are done pretty well; the Serenade for Winds (K. 361) is beautiful and moving, the Lacrymosa section from the Requiem is done well, and the Piano Concerto in D Minor retains its haunting mood. If you are looking for a reasonably-priced Mozart CD, this would probably be a good investment for you; but if you are wanting renditions of these beautiful songs as you heard them in the film, then spend the extra bucks and buy the soundtrack.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......1999-11-21

Terrible. Were these selections recorded on a gramophone, or what? There are a million recordings of each of these pieces that are so much better than the way they're presented here. There's no real sense of musicality at all; each piece sounds about as exciting as staring at the printed music would be. I'd be ashamed to use this CD to indoctrinate my friends to Mozart. If you want Mozart in all his lush greatness, go buy a CD by the ASMF, or the VPO, or reputable orchestras. But for Pete's sake, skip this one at all costs.

1 out of 5 stars This CD isn't too great........1999-07-14

I've heard the official soundtrack from the movie "Amadeus" and it's a million times better than this one. Symphony #25 and the Requiem excerpts are some of the worst recordings that I have heard. They aren't performed very musically in my opinion. None of these recordings compare to the quality recordings on the "Amadeus" soundtrack and I would not recommend this recording.

5 out of 5 stars equal to volume I.......2000-12-08

This C.D. like Volume I before it is a very high quality, wonderfully diverse album. The pair compliment eachother beautifully, and stand alone strong. I would recomend it to anyone who already loves Opera, and to any new innitiate. I bought Vol. I and Vol. II on a whim and have not been sorry. The piece by Wagner at the end is worth the purchase price alone for this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic..........2000-10-16

I cannot believe this CD is being sold at bargain price. It has some beautiful recordings. I love Domingo's Una Furtiva Lagrima even better than Pavarotti's on the London Label. Domingo has a better conductor, Sir John Pritchard. Te Kanawa is awesome, but the orchestra is too distant in that Maazel recording of Don Giovanni. Scotto's Casta Diva is great with a more balanced recorded sound, even if Joan Sutherland reaches higher notes. Cortubas and Wixell are, of course, great artists too. The whole CD is a steal. It would have been nice to have had a little more Mozart on this CD, but you can only fit so much on one disc. Sony has some real gems in their collection which too often gets overlooked because they don't have the glamour of Deutsche Grammophon or Philips. Buy this CD...don't hesitate.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music from the greatest composer in history!.......2002-02-15

The music selection on this CD summarizes the ingenious mind of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In his 35 years, he composed some of the most beautiful and stunning music, ever heard. This CD features the best of Mozart's greatest compositions....of course, all of his best work couldn't be put on just 1 disc. I would highly recommend: MOZART More Greatest Hits to compliment this first, stellar CD! SONY Classical has done a terrific job of featuring the top conductors, soloists and musicians, in the world, on their labeled CDs. Don't pass these by....get them here at, the always dependable, Amazon.com! Bravo!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars UNGLAUBLICH.......2001-08-20

Unbelievable how "unimportant" the current composers appear when you listen to this - funny - isn't it?

    5 out of 5 stars Great........1998-10-02

I loves the Diea Irae. Mozart's Requiem has got to be the best classical music work EVER written. It gives me chills.
