This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Face it, anyone who can play Horowitz's fabled transcriptions or Cziffra's madcap interlocking octaves Flight of the Bumblebee will get attention. What is most impressive, though, is that Arcadi Volodos replicates the notes, but not the performances. His tempos and voicings are completely different, and just as valid, if not quite as coruscating as the originals. In other words, Volodos makes this repertoire his own, as well as the other selections on this well-recorded debut outing. --Jed Distler

I do not want to take away the pleasure of the many reviewers who have found this item a thrilling enjoyment. Only I want to issue a warning to all lovers of the art of the piano: Do not buy this album in the hope of hearing a worthy successor to such past Russian titans as Richter and Gilels! Volodos is easily their master in terms of blistering dexterity, power of attack and distinct arpeggios. Yet, in all other respects he is dwarfed by comparison. His playing, all in all, is egocentric, crude in terms of its conventionality of expression and bereft of the humour that might have made his incredibly overloaded arrangements truly delightful. Now, they are at most decent circus acts, leaving one to wonder how one man with only two hands can plays this fast and how that very same man can take such a hamfisted approach to his slap-stick repertoire.

With an orchestra Volodos most often plays as if he cannot hear the other musicians through the noise he is making. On his own he fares slightly better. Still, he seems to be more in the service of technical boasting than musical expression. To take two examples:

1. His "Bumblebee" clocks in at a mindboggling 1.36 sharp. That's about all that recommends it. In musical terms, the performance is absurd: This witty piece is meant to portray an amiably buzzing furball, NOT an angry wasp on steroids.

2. Many performers have been tempted to beef up Mozart's somewhat monotone K331 "Turkish March". Volodos' paraphrase goes over the top with nifty counterpoint coupled with all sorts of tricks from the virtuoso shelf. This could have been a true delight if the performer had only loosened up a little and offered the occasional comic relief that such an encore so obviosuly calls for. Here Volodos simply seems oblivious to the inherent potential for musical expression. On a repeated listening the performance tires by its utter conventionality of phrasing.

Praised be the day when Volodos opens up his ears to the music he is performing. Then we might hope for new reference recordings of various works in the superdifficult division. Until then we may only grieve that such supernatural technique is going to waste in sideshow idleness. If you crave for a contemporary Russian virtuoso, try out Nikolai Lugansky, even if his somewhat austere taste in the romantic repertoire might deter some fans of Horowitz et al. Lugansky is in supernatural technical command if the keyboard, yet never leaves you in doubt that you are listening to a true musician.

superlatives fail.......2006-10-22

Volodos is simply one of the greatest pianists I have ever heard. The transcriptions on this CD are well worth your investment. I was fortunate to hear Volodos at Lincoln Center play the finger-bending Prokofiev 2nd piano concerto. I am a professionally trained pianist, and I have simply never heard a performance to equal it. I was convinced two or more people were playing. The emotional power was overwhelming. I wish he would record it. And the complete Transcendantal Etudes.

Mind-shatteringly superb.......2006-08-08

Volodos strikes us with some incredible works here, friends. These are quite simply some of the most perfectly executed works upon the piano I have heard, and this is no light affair considering the depression-inducing difficulty of some of these behemoths of the piano (Horowitz transcription of the Hungarian Rhapsody sounds like it requires a virtuoso of the highest order to play well.) We're dealing with a pianistic genius who I'm sure will continue to astound us in the future. And what, he began studying at the age of sixteen!? I want him to record all the Transcendental Etudes, but who knows if that will ever occur. Check out his Rachmaninoff concerto as well, it's about as close to perfect as it gets.

Ladies and Gentlemen, what we have here is quite possibly the greatest piano virtuoso alive today. While the musicality and emotion the artist puts in his work are exeptional, but not without precedence, his virtuosity, technique and rapidity of execution are quite simply...GOD-GIVEN. Period. If you enjoy James Galway, you should get this CD. It is wonderful easy listening music for when you are doing something else like reading. It is not as exciting as some of his other CDs but just as good. All the songs are beautiful and will be greatly appreciated.

I don't understand why Jules Massenet's "Meditation" from Thais is on Teldec's Tearjerker album and not on it's Meditation disc. Or why Maria-Joao Pires's performance of Schubert's Impromptu, Op. 90, No. 3 in G-flat major, is a tearjerker and not a Stressbuster (as another disc in this series is dubbed). Of course, such reasoning is too sophisticated for this context. The decent performances here feature music by Chopin, Puccini, Donizetti, Tchaikovsky, and others. What jerks my tears is the fact that a package like this is apparently needed to draw listeners to classical music. --Gwendolyn Freed

Another example of great playing.......2007-01-10

This CD of Sergei's playing is very nice. Him and his sister are a fine duo that can make very beautiful music with just the Piano and Trumpet/Flugelhorn. This CD shows Sergei's expressive and lyrical side rather than his great technical ability. The music on this CD is something you would want to sit in front of a fire and really relax. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Classical music, not just to trumpet players.

Elegie with a trumpet.......2007-01-09

Looking for Elegie. It was the correct piece, but I would have preferred it done with violins etc. Elegie was my mother's favorite piece.

Poetic.......2000-06-07

Sergei Nakariakov is one of the greatest trumpet players alive today. His repertoire is enormous and keeps growing. He is featured here on a disc of songs and lieder from the vocal repertoire. Who needs words? His trumpet speaks as clear as any voice, and is as touching as any words could be. The music is brilliant anyway. He someone makes it all a little more special.

Perahia at his very best in Schubert.......2006-07-24

It gets a bit confusing now that Sony and BMG are merged--these recordings of the eight Schubert Impromptus, dating from 1980 and 1982, originaly apeared on Sony (the fillers are from 1998). They were greeted rapturously by critics, and one can immediately hear why. Murray Perhaia was at the absolute peak of his art, giving us a magical blend of alert rhythms, inner vitality, sparkling fingerwork, and an instinctive feeling for Schubert's melodies. In this mid-price reissue the generous timing (76 min.) allows for the inclusion of a trio of Schubert song transcriptions by Liszt. Those performances being more recent, one can hear how much more polite and cautious his playing has become in the meantime. Everything is beautifully done, but you keep wishing for more vibrancy.

The presence of this promissory interpreter in the public arena has always been motive of immense approval around the world. Perahia is not only a formidable pianist, he is a musical thinker, and that is why every one of his recordings are always welcome, because they have something to say. Conviction and honesty; impeccable phrasing and exceptional fingering makes of this mature artist, one of the most prominent pianists of his generation.

His Schubert possesses harmonic vitality and lyrical richness. And personally I would include him among the ten most notable Schubertian pianists in the world actually.

Best Piano Music on the Planet.......2007-03-16

If you like solo classical piano music, you must have this CD. The "marriage" of Scubert and Liszt is nothing less than transcendental. A well-engineered recording of great performances.

I might be one of a few who has never been dazzled by these particular Rachmaninov transcriptions. Perhaps it's the unevenness of the music that drives me away. I don't think the choice of music for transcription to piano is that interesting. Granted, the Bach Partita, the Flight of the Bumble-bee and the Schubert Wohin are exceptional, but the rest are just... "eh." Rachmaninov's transcriptions of his own songs are indeed significant and I value them as much as Earl Wild's transcriptions of the Rach's songs. But Franz Behr's Polka, Mussorgsky's Hopak, and Bizet's Minuet from L'Arlesienne, and even Kreisler's Songs are not engrossing.

But first the good: Rachmaninov's transcription of the Bach Partita for Violin No. 3 in E major is an excellent addition to the Bach transcription oeuvre. With exquisite skill, Rachmaninov transfers the scintillating polyphony and the vibrant violin parts into the colors of the piano tones. The melodic lines are intact and Biret's performance is full of noble feeling and Baroque affectations. Schubert's Wohin is a fine choice for piano transcription, even though it's been done before with exemplary success by Liszt. Rachmaninov's treatment of the accompaniment and the vocal line are just as balanced and pianistic as Liszt's. Biret's sensitive phrasing is notable and the whole piece counts as one of Rachmaninov's best transcriptions from this set. Rachmaninov's cadenza for Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 is a worthy effort and I'm impressed with it. Biret's interpretation of this Hungarian Rhapsody is questionable, but the wild abandon of the cadenza is great; the Rach's imaginative motivic touches are terrific.

I don't think I would be human if I disliked Rimsky-Korsakov's skittish flurries in the Flight of the Bumble-bee. Biret plays with a combination of meticulous precision and quirky dynamics; obviously a classic and a satisfying pianistic dessert. I'm also pleased enough with Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo, even though I would rather have the overture transcribed instead. The Scherzo offers typical Mendelssohnian fairy flickering and rhythmic propulsion, but didn't invite too many repeated hearings on my part. Rachmaninov's songs are a different story. There are plenty of beautiful moments in Daisies and Lilacs, pieces that counter the demonic Etude-Tableaux with gentle lyricism and delicate trills. The Dance of the Young Gypsy Maidens from Rachmaninov's opera, Aleko, is another appealing transcription with occasional seductive melodies.

Unfortunately, the rest of the transcriptions featured here are unremarkable. Mussorgsky's Hopak has a fine introduction, but its main theme is colorless and empty. This two minute transcription may be fun to play but musically it doesn't offer much. I could say the same thing with regards to Bizet's L'Arlesienne Minuet, a short piece with a promising trio section and a mediocre minuet theme. Franz-Behr's Polka W.R. is also auspicious in its virtuosic divulgences, but there is really nothing unique about the work. Kreisler's songs are probably the most popular of this recording; everyone loves Rachmaninov's Liebesleid transcription. I confess it has strong points but I don't think Biret's playing is convincing. She is too slow in the Liebesleid and too fast in the Liebesfreud. As for the Tchaikovsky transcription, Biret is definitely playing too fast here. For an outstanding performance of a different piano transcription, check out Pavel Pabst's sublime arrangement on this recording: Paul Pabst: Paraphrases on Themes by Tchaikovsky.

Bottom line: Rachmaninov's choices for transcription are just not that attractive to me. There are occasional sparks here and there and some worthy gems, but honestly, I don't think there are any hidden transcriptional triumphs. Rachmaninov faired much better with his two piano arrangements of Glazunov's 6th and his own The Rock found here: Skryabin: Symphony No4; Glazunov: Symphony No6

A great pianist!.......1999-02-11

Idil Biret is a pianist who outdoes Rakhmaninov, Ohlssohn, and Hobson in their playing of Rakhmaninov's transcriptions. Of all of their marvelous playing I would choose her to listen to. A great buy at such a bargain price.
