Best and cheapest of Koechlin chamber music........2000-12-12

At less than half the price of most of the other Koechlin CDs available, this one is a bargain, but what is most remarkable is the variety of selections and instrumental combinations. The playing is uniformly good, as is production. Many of the pieces are not recorded elsewhere, and those that are, are often definitively performed. As owner of 16 recordings dedicated to the works of Koechlin, I can say that this is one of three best, the others being the "Trois Oeuveres", played by Jean-Pierre Ferey, and the lone collection of Koechlin's choral works, the name of which escapes me (it is available on Amazon). If you are interested in Koechlin's chamber music, browse quickly through the welter of chamber collections, then save some time and money and get this one.

Every Flutist should know these unaccompanied solos. Writing solos in the first place for any instrument save piano, is a conceptual challenge. The piano in the multitude of Sonatas it reverently accompanies from the classical canon levels into one-dimension the pure beauty of the instrument. Modernity's content however was to arrest the piano, keeping it at a distance or simply eradicating its dominate presence. Koechlin seem to understand this.He was a bit of a recluse eclectic, without an apparent focused creative agenda, which is why he is fascinating. He wrote every conceivable type of music and genre, pieces to Hollywood star Jean Harlow, excursions into Kiplings Jungle Book as well as having Leftist proclivities. Here his typically French dimeanor envelopes his creative juices. The French dimeanor of the fantastique, the image bound to a timeless source. The Nectaire Songs here are all about that and spirituality, Prayers, processions and dances as well,All in some for ever-never land of French Oz. Peasant painting around this time, the first thirty years of this century was fascinated by similar themes and utopian dreams with naked women in green fields,sitting on rocks, holding fruits of fertility and seduction. Koechlin's solos here display just that kind of image and suggests that type of sensuality, with intoxicated birds #14,gods familiar or not,tranquil clarity.youth,life and arrows. Singer has an incredibly marvelous tone, overwhelming,strident,relentless and thick, she never thins or allows the music to encompass her, she devours it. With such an agenda of dozens of pieces there is bound to be repetition, but I dare anyone to find where it is over the work's massive length. i bought this cd because of a lesser work by a fairly obsucre composer named charles koechlin.
