Amazon.com essential recording

Bach, like Handel and most other baroque composers, often reused compositions, either adapting and assembling portions of them to make new "compilation" works (as with the four short Masses) or rearranging them for other forces (as with the violin concertos Bach rearranged as harpsichord concertos). Bach's three sonatas for viola da gamba and keyboard are just such rearrangements, all of trio sonatas for two melody instruments and continuo. This means that the keyboard isn't just harmonic accompaniment: It's a second melody instrument, an equal duet partner with the gamba. This can be difficult for a harpsichordist to pull off successfully, because the harpsichord can't sustain a note or vary its volume. (Bach didn't specify which keyboard instrument to use, however, and there are other interesting period instrument options possible.) Ton Koopman does his instrument proud, though--he's more famous now as a Bach conductor, but he came to prominence as a harpsichordist and organist, and his sparkling performance here shows why. Jordi Savall is probably the only viola da gamba player to have become famous beyond the small world of early-instrument aficionados. Granted, that's partly due to his conducting career, but no one can make this rather introverted instrument sing quite like Savall can. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars superb artistry and delicious tone.......2005-11-21

There is a large number of recordings of these pieces available today, but I would say this ranks as one of the finest, if not THE finest, available. Jordi Savall has a wonderful way of making the viola da gamba sound as well as it can all the time, and even in the most virtuosic passages of these pieces there isn't any "scratchy" playing like you will find in recordings by lesser gambists. Also present is the great sense of musicianship and sensitivity one would expect from Savall.

Ton Koopman is among the most famous harpsichordists and Baroque conductors in the world today, and he certainly does justice to the keyboard parts, which unlike most contemporary Baroque sonatas, are far more than mere accompaniment or continuo parts. Bach wrote a true trio texture here, and while I would wish that some of the harpsichord lines could come out more, others have written that the harpsichord is more present than in other recordings, so perhaps as a harpsichordist myself(and gambist) I am just being picky!

I own hundreds of dollars worth of Savall CDs and I would recommend this one just as heartily as the others. A great treat is the arrangement of the C major organ tio sonata for alto viol and harpsichord: perhaps the only "alto viola da gamba" sonata recording you can find. The now-rare instrument sounds beautiful and has a singing tone with lots of resonance in the lower range...a little like a viola but with a more transparent and clear tone.

5 out of 5 stars Not your grandmother's period performance.......2002-08-06

Delicious. Despite the remarkable artistry that has come into the historical performance world in the past several decades, we've had to wait for this to hear the first truly remarkable recording of the gamba sonatas (although the Bylsma/van Asperen experiment impresses too). These little gems are fantastic-- much larger in scope and depth than the humble (to those who have not heard it) instrumentation would suggest. And, Koopman and Savall have thrown in a reworking of the similarily structured C-major trio sonata for organ to the CD's tremendous advantage.

5 out of 5 stars The best period recording of these works available.......2002-04-03

This has to be considered the definitive recording of the Bach gamba sonatas. Savall and Koopman are arguably the finest gamba and harpsichord players, respectively, in the world. The balance is slightly more harpsichord-heavy than is typically heard, but it allows both hands of the keyboard a chance at equality. Rather than be a viol accompanied by two keyboard lines, this is three individual lines of music, and Koopman is skilled enough to make it work. Listen for a few painfully long resolutions on half-cadences at the end of slow movements. It's the nice kind of pain. The addition of an arrangement of an organ sonata as a sort of fourth viola da gamba sonata is a pleasant treat.

For those of you who don't know these works, this is essential listening. The three gamba sonatas are among the last great pieces written for the instrument, which subsequently went out of style until relatively recently.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2001-03-10

Savall and Koopman first recorded the three gamba sonatas over twenty years ago, so this new version was already up against stiff competition from the same pair of musicians. But what a revelation! While the two work together splendidly, the contrast between their approaches is what makes the collaboration so perfect. And, as one might expect, the added experience both have beind them make for a more relaxed, though hardly less engaging, performance. Savall's dynamic subtleties are matched by Koopman's strongly rhetorical approach and tighty controlled ornamentation. As an added bonus, one of the six trio sonatas (originally for organ) is added to fill out the disc. While there are plenty of recordings of these works in the catalogue, including excellent modern instrument performances by the likes of Kim Kashkashian on viola and many 'cellists, these should easily be THE performances to have, and not just for period-performance buffs.

5 out of 5 stars like spring water(just intonation) versus tonality(polluted).......1999-06-27

Just intonation is based on the natural physicalness of sound, that composers and performers . We haven't, in the history of Western music, instead we have been barbarians with Tonality as our ear- icon, the Western system of what we hear(or don't hear) today is based on "bent" or altered states of vibrations, especially the intervals thirds and fifths. The problem now is that our ears have been conditioned, almost irreparably.Tonality is like an oil-slick touching every shore of World music. If you've never heard music based on just intonation, this is a great place to start. The combination harp and guitar (with some percussion here) has a pure unimpaired quality for which you will immediately say, "why haven't I ever heard this music before". The works here are also by devoted creators who have an intimate knowledge of the tuning non-Western systems of the world. Lou Harrison's music works best in smaller intimate pieces as here in the "Suite No.2". Here the tightly constructed five movements for guitar and harp has a richly diverse constitution, highlighting the solos unique melodic qualities as well as the ensemble chordal combinations. Harrison's music has a close association with the gestures of Asian music, but you always sense he is speaking his own voice always melodic yet with original shapes, lines and contours in unpredictable ways. La Monte Young's "Sarabande", originally for piano solo doesn't suffer under its transformation for guitar and harp.It sounds like wind chimes,a sense of static harmonies(purified now) drifting freely and gently. I never warmed to Partch's music. Granted his profound theories on tuning and instrument making is what the world music systems needed, still his music doesn't have the emotive eqivalence of his profound theories. The spoken text here from "Barstow: 8 Hitchhikers' Inscriptions"(1941) is simply blunt and boring reflecting an uniformed sense of the unfreedom of anarchy. "In a Landscape" by John Cage,- originally a piano piece- works better, as a harp solo with its simple arpeggiated harmonies magnetized around two tones." Dream" also by Cage works less successfully, the original G-minor piano solo has a sense of sparceness, and intimacy, where the guitar and harp combination heregently explodes thisas a miniature orchestration. Shulman and Schneider are always sensitive with a high sense of musicality and emotive direction no matter what music is in front of them.

A beautiful selection of microtonal pieces. I enjoyed listening to it a lot. The booklet which comes with the CD is great and manages to explain some of the concepts behind this music. Great value.

Album Description

A Dream Recording Is Once Again Available! Long out-of-print, and eagerly sought by collectors, Roger Wagner's recording of Respighi's intimate tableau, Laud to the Nativity retuns to the catalogue. This recording comes from a series made by the Roger Wagner Chorale in the 1960's. Coupled with the Respighi on the original LP recording is Monteverdi's glorious setting of the Magnificat from the Vespers of 1610. The solos, sung here by Marie Gibson, Marilyn Horne, and Charles Bressler, featured in the Respighi Laud, are fresh and clear, and the choir sings in typical Roger Wagner warmth and strength.

I believe this is the only English version recording available currently. It is very well done.

5 out of 5 stars The One and Only!.......2006-12-21

One Christmas many years ago I was experiencing a period in my life when things were going very poorly ---and it looked as if the holiday season was going to be a bleak one. Fortunately,I had managed to acquire a reel-to-reel tape of this recording of the Respighi "Laud"; in the weeks before Christmas I began to play it nightly--sometimes 2 or 3 times---alone (with headphones) in my upstairs room in the dark except for a tiny string of Christmas lights and the glow from the stereo control panel. And thanks to this nightly "ritual", that Christmas remains one of the most moving and emotional of any in my adult life.

And that's the power of this music. If pressed, I would have to name the Respighi "Laud" as the most purely BEAUTIFUL work of music that I know; I have waited for nearly 20 years in the hope that we would see THIS PARTICULAR recording preserved on CD---and here it is AT LAST!

And the wait was worth it---the sound is stunning! Tha amount of warmth, presence, and detail captured by EMI/Capitol in 1961 is astounding, and you hear EVERY bit of it in this first-rate transfer.

The performance is so incredibly lovely that it almost defies description. Suffice to say that the singing of the Roger Wagner Chorale, with its amazing range of color---especially its lighter, mezza-voce tone---is largely responsible for the serene and radiant quality of this performance. I am certain that some of the singers in the Chorale on this recording (especially the male voices) were also active in other fine choral groups that recorded during the late '50s-early 60's, when many excellent, legitimate Christmas records were being released. (The best of them in my opinion was a 1957 album by The Jack Halloran Singers on the DOT label, which has been a staple in my family since 1959---and the similarity in sound of that chorus to the Wagner Chorale is definitely one of the reasons why I respond so strongly to this recording of the Respighi).

The solo singing is fine, the chief attraction for collectors being an early appearance by Marilyn Horne. Soprano Marie Gibson as the angel sings with a lovely, limpid tone that soars and floats beautifully when required (I met Miss Gibson in the early 90's in Chicago when she served as a judge for the MET regional auditions; I raved about her recording of the "Laud"---and she was thrilled to be recognized and remembered for it).

True, conductor Alfred Wallenstein could have lingered a bit more here and there....his performance is definitely more brisk than any other that I have heard....but the gentle, airy, pastorale elegance and grace of the choral singing conveys an exquisite sense of joy, which many of the heavier and more lethargic performances that have been available totally miss. The quick tempo "GLORIA" section near the end is VERY fast indeed, but the agility and precision of Wagner's singers pull it off brilliantly. The following chorale ("To save the world from sin..")
is sung with a lightness, warmth and child-like simplicity that matches the music perfectly, while the final hushed, mysterious "Amens" will leave you in awe of this sublime performance.

A true CLASSIC, one of the real treasures of recorded music.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Music in the Pastoral Style.......2004-12-07

I love Christmas Music. Not just the Bing Crosby "White Christmas" and the Andy Williams "Happy Holidays", but the classical music genre that truly portrays the Birth of Christ.(What Christmas is really about before Santa Claus).

Respighi's music begins quietly with a lovely shepard-like melody, and ends the some way also. The message--this is a birth of a simple man, just like you and me, and who's life is just as important as yours and mine. No Hallejujah Choruses, just beautiful music.

If you want a different feel to the Christmas feeling, listen to this work. You will be pleased.

Just to mentioned other classical works that involve Christmas abd great, great music.

1) Ralph Vaughan Williams-A Fantasy on Christmas Carols
2) Honegger-A Christmas Cantata
3) Hely-Hutchinson-A Carol Symphony. Try the new NAXOS

Enjoy!

        Album Description

Celestial Harmonies' efforts to present the definitive catalogue of Franz Lehrndorfer's repertoire would not be complete without Romantic Organ Music of the 19th Century, recorded on the organ of St. Boniface in Munich. Built in 1976, the organ does not embody the tonal character of a conventional South-German organ. Instead, it follows the tonal ideals of a 19th century French cathedral. The works performed on this CD show off the many different tonal possibilities of this nuance-rich organ. The choice of compositions, which include those resulting from the musical patronage of the Benedictine Order and two pieces from the threshold of the Romantic era, take into account the fundamental romantic character of the instrument and its connection to the Benedictines. Featured composers include Leon Boellmann, Charles-Marie Widor, Louis James Alfred Lefebure-Wely, Joseph Ignaz Bieling, Armin Knab, Franz Xaver Schnizer, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Arthur Piechler and Cesar Franck. Lehrndorfer's repertoire reaches from Early Music to the 20th century. His musicianship is equally suited to romantic organ music from 19th century France (and as practiced in other countries) as it is to Bach or improvisations over themes from children's and folk songs.

Complete harpsichord works with music for tack piano & fortepiano in historic and experimental tunings

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Exciting.......2002-08-02

This CD is not a bad CD. The music is extremely well played and the repertoire is interesting, but it just seems to be lacking in the spark that I associate with Lou Harrison.

This recording is dominated by harpsichord music in just intonation with a few pieces for fortepiano and a couple of tack piano pieces thrown in for variety. Most of the works are in Harrison's Baroque/Eastern style. The first piece on the CD is a longish suite based on Baroque dance forms. The effect is rather like Rameau or Couperin, all elegance and grace. The six sonatas are obviously modeled on the Scarlatti sonatas. These are also charming works. The final few works on the CD are from aHarrision's earlier period. There is even a spoof on 12 tone music just for fun.

So what's the problem? I think that, because of the similarity of timbre in this recital, the disc begins to sound rather grey after a while. The harpsichord as an instrument, tends toward a deadening consistency of tone color. Most players reslove this by creating programs by diverse composers, or programs of Bach, who seems to defy boredom. Harrision is a good composer, but without the tonal contrasts of his ensemble pieces, this CD begins to fall flat after a while.

This is a CD for the completist only I think. People new to Harrision would do better to buy the Piano Concerto or La Koro Sutro. Both of these pieces provide a better introduction to the work of this marvelous composer.

These small pieces are what survive of two volumes compiled in the Bach household for the pleasure of Bach's second wife, herself a professional musician, and for her use in teaching music to their children. The recording provides a touching picture of domestic music-making in the Bach household. Igor Kipnis plays most of the music by himself, in his enlightened and enlivening style, and he is joined by excellent colleagues on songs that we can imagine Anna and her children singing. This is a wonderful, well- recorded set. But bring your magnifying glass if you want to read the fuzzy microtype of the booklet. --Leslie Gerber

3 out of 5 stars Kipnis needs to slow down.......2002-01-23

This is a beautiful recording but Igor Kipnis needs to slow down. He plays the short, easy keyboard pieces as fast as he can and with strange trills and extra notes. The rhythms are wierd too. I liked this recording but could have liked it better if Igor Kipnis did not ruin it with his wierd playing.

4 out of 5 stars An intimate recital.......2000-11-14

Anna Magdalena Bach's notebook is a wonderful collection of music by J.S. Bach, his son C.P.E., and various other composers, including lesser-knowns and many peices which have not been attributed to anyone. The credits above are a little misleading in this respect, but it's consistently great music all the way through. The Rondeau (track 6) is a particularly stunning work, tuneful and beautiful, clocking in at around 5 minutes. It was written by Couperin and comes from his second book of harpsichord works. Kipnis' performance is excellent, and while his style (decoration, rubato, etc.) is distracting on a few other selections, here it is marvelous and perfectly suited to the work.

The set makes a nice introduction to Bach's keyboard works, featuring the famous aria from the Goldberg Variations as well as the C major prelude from the well-tempered clavier book one. You'll recognize a few other tunes in here as well, as some famous (overused?) little minuets originate from this collection, even though many of them aren't Bach's. Kipnis' playing, while at times idiosynchratic, is for the most part very enjoyable. The harpsichord and clavichord both are 1970's models. I've heard bad things about harpsichords from that decade but it really isn't bad sounding. The harpsichord is not very resonant but isn't awful and clanging. While I enjoy the intimate choice of clavichord on many selections, the set could use some sequencing help as the volume difference between the two instruments is so great that for the most part it requires constant adjustment for the listener. The vocalists are also not the best in the world but there aren't too many songs here. I'd have to recommend McGegan's single disc recording on Harmonia Mundi for sound and value (all the "hits" are on it) but if you want the full picture then this is the way to go.

4 out of 5 stars A Joy to the ears (Mostly!).......2000-06-15

These pieces, originally written by Bach for his wife as lessons for their children is delightful. Some of the pieces will be familiar, while others are just simply romps through the keyboard. I found some of the pieces a bit unfinished, and unpolished, yet still enjoyable! The pices are played on Harpsachord and Clavechord, two instruments that will quickly take any listener back to the times of Bach. These instruments lend themselves to give a light and airy rendering of the music. While I am not particularly a fan of operetic styles, there are a few of these scattered through-out. I tend to skip these, though even these are easy to enjoy. Overall, I highly reccommend this version as one of the best and well composed renderings of the little known notebook of Anna Magdelana Bach!

            Album Description

Francesco Barsanti (1690-1772) was one of the many extraordinary Italian instrumentalists - virtuosi and composers - who throughout the 18th century, traveling across the whole of Europe, contributed in a decisive way to the definitive success of instrumental music and the formation of an international language. The ensemble I Fiori Musicali consists of two recorders, basso continuo and other instruments specializing in the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, alone and in conjunction with other chamber groups.
