Amazon.com essential recording
Bach, like Handel and most other baroque composers, often reused compositions, either adapting and assembling portions of them to make new "compilation" works (as with the four short Masses) or rearranging them for other forces (as with the violin concertos Bach rearranged as harpsichord concertos). Bach's three sonatas for viola da gamba and keyboard are just such rearrangements, all of trio sonatas for two melody instruments and continuo. This means that the keyboard isn't just harmonic accompaniment: It's a second melody instrument, an equal duet partner with the gamba. This can be difficult for a harpsichordist to pull off successfully, because the harpsichord can't sustain a note or vary its volume. (Bach didn't specify which keyboard instrument to use, however, and there are other interesting period instrument options possible.) Ton Koopman does his instrument proud, though--he's more famous now as a Bach conductor, but he came to prominence as a harpsichordist and organist, and his sparkling performance here shows why. Jordi Savall is probably the only viola da gamba player to have become famous beyond the small world of early-instrument aficionados. Granted, that's partly due to his conducting career, but no one can make this rather introverted instrument sing quite like Savall can. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:
superb artistry and delicious tone.......2005-11-21
Ton Koopman is among the most famous harpsichordists and Baroque conductors in the world today, and he certainly does justice to the keyboard parts, which unlike most contemporary Baroque sonatas, are far more than mere accompaniment or continuo parts. Bach wrote a true trio texture here, and while I would wish that some of the harpsichord lines could come out more, others have written that the harpsichord is more present than in other recordings, so perhaps as a harpsichordist myself(and gambist) I am just being picky!
I own hundreds of dollars worth of Savall CDs and I would recommend this one just as heartily as the others. A great treat is the arrangement of the C major organ tio sonata for alto viol and harpsichord: perhaps the only "alto viola da gamba" sonata recording you can find. The now-rare instrument sounds beautiful and has a singing tone with lots of resonance in the lower range...a little like a viola but with a more transparent and clear tone.
Not your grandmother's period performance.......2002-08-06
The best period recording of these works available.......2002-04-03
For those of you who don't know these works, this is essential listening. The three gamba sonatas are among the last great pieces written for the instrument, which subsequently went out of style until relatively recently.
Superb.......2001-03-10

Album Description
A Dream Recording Is Once Again Available! Long out-of-print, and eagerly sought by collectors, Roger Wagner's recording of Respighi's intimate tableau, Laud to the Nativity retuns to the catalogue. This recording comes from a series made by the Roger Wagner Chorale in the 1960's. Coupled with the Respighi on the original LP recording is Monteverdi's glorious setting of the Magnificat from the Vespers of 1610. The solos, sung here by Marie Gibson, Marilyn Horne, and Charles Bressler, featured in the Respighi Laud, are fresh and clear, and the choir sings in typical Roger Wagner warmth and strength.Customer Reviews:
Excellent Quality recording.......2007-01-04
The One and Only!.......2006-12-21
And that's the power of this music. If pressed, I would have to name the Respighi "Laud" as the most purely BEAUTIFUL work of music that I know; I have waited for nearly 20 years in the hope that we would see THIS PARTICULAR recording preserved on CD---and here it is AT LAST!
And the wait was worth it---the sound is stunning! Tha amount of warmth, presence, and detail captured by EMI/Capitol in 1961 is astounding, and you hear EVERY bit of it in this first-rate transfer.
The performance is so incredibly lovely that it almost defies description. Suffice to say that the singing of the Roger Wagner Chorale, with its amazing range of color---especially its lighter, mezza-voce tone---is largely responsible for the serene and radiant quality of this performance. I am certain that some of the singers in the Chorale on this recording (especially the male voices) were also active in other fine choral groups that recorded during the late '50s-early 60's, when many excellent, legitimate Christmas records were being released. (The best of them in my opinion was a 1957 album by The Jack Halloran Singers on the DOT label, which has been a staple in my family since 1959---and the similarity in sound of that chorus to the Wagner Chorale is definitely one of the reasons why I respond so strongly to this recording of the Respighi).
The solo singing is fine, the chief attraction for collectors being an early appearance by Marilyn Horne. Soprano Marie Gibson as the angel sings with a lovely, limpid tone that soars and floats beautifully when required (I met Miss Gibson in the early 90's in Chicago when she served as a judge for the MET regional auditions; I raved about her recording of the "Laud"---and she was thrilled to be recognized and remembered for it).
True, conductor Alfred Wallenstein could have lingered a bit more here and there....his performance is definitely more brisk than any other that I have heard....but the gentle, airy, pastorale elegance and grace of the choral singing conveys an exquisite sense of joy, which many of the heavier and more lethargic performances that have been available totally miss. The quick tempo "GLORIA" section near the end is VERY fast indeed, but the agility and precision of Wagner's singers pull it off brilliantly. The following chorale ("To save the world from sin..")
is sung with a lightness, warmth and child-like simplicity that matches the music perfectly, while the final hushed, mysterious "Amens" will leave you in awe of this sublime performance.
A true CLASSIC, one of the real treasures of recorded music.
Christmas Music in the Pastoral Style.......2004-12-07
Respighi's music begins quietly with a lovely shepard-like melody, and ends the some way also. The message--this is a birth of a simple man, just like you and me, and who's life is just as important as yours and mine. No Hallejujah Choruses, just beautiful music.
If you want a different feel to the Christmas feeling, listen to this work. You will be pleased.
Just to mentioned other classical works that involve Christmas abd great, great music.

2) Honegger-A Christmas Cantata

Romantic Organ Music of the 19th Century
Franz Lehrndorfer Manufacturer: Celestial Harmonies ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B00006IU6O Release Date: 2002-10-01 |
Album Description
Celestial Harmonies' efforts to present the definitive catalogue of Franz Lehrndorfer's repertoire would not be complete without Romantic Organ Music of the 19th Century, recorded on the organ of St. Boniface in Munich. Built in 1976, the organ does not embody the tonal character of a conventional South-German organ. Instead, it follows the tonal ideals of a 19th century French cathedral. The works performed on this CD show off the many different tonal possibilities of this nuance-rich organ. The choice of compositions, which include those resulting from the musical patronage of the Benedictine Order and two pieces from the threshold of the Romantic era, take into account the fundamental romantic character of the instrument and its connection to the Benedictines. Featured composers include Leon Boellmann, Charles-Marie Widor, Louis James Alfred Lefebure-Wely, Joseph Ignaz Bieling, Armin Knab, Franz Xaver Schnizer, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Arthur Piechler and Cesar Franck. Lehrndorfer's repertoire reaches from Early Music to the 20th century. His musicianship is equally suited to romantic organ music from 19th century France (and as practiced in other countries) as it is to Bach or improvisations over themes from children's and folk songs.

Complete harpsichord works with music for tack piano & fortepiano in historic and experimental tuningsCustomer Reviews:
Good but not Exciting.......2002-08-02
This recording is dominated by harpsichord music in just intonation with a few pieces for fortepiano and a couple of tack piano pieces thrown in for variety. Most of the works are in Harrison's Baroque/Eastern style. The first piece on the CD is a longish suite based on Baroque dance forms. The effect is rather like Rameau or Couperin, all elegance and grace. The six sonatas are obviously modeled on the Scarlatti sonatas. These are also charming works. The final few works on the CD are from aHarrision's earlier period. There is even a spoof on 12 tone music just for fun.
So what's the problem? I think that, because of the similarity of timbre in this recital, the disc begins to sound rather grey after a while. The harpsichord as an instrument, tends toward a deadening consistency of tone color. Most players reslove this by creating programs by diverse composers, or programs of Bach, who seems to defy boredom. Harrision is a good composer, but without the tonal contrasts of his ensemble pieces, this CD begins to fall flat after a while.
This is a CD for the completist only I think. People new to Harrision would do better to buy the Piano Concerto or La Koro Sutro. Both of these pieces provide a better introduction to the work of this marvelous composer.

These small pieces are what survive of two volumes compiled in the Bach household for the pleasure of Bach's second wife, herself a professional musician, and for her use in teaching music to their children. The recording provides a touching picture of domestic music-making in the Bach household. Igor Kipnis plays most of the music by himself, in his enlightened and enlivening style, and he is joined by excellent colleagues on songs that we can imagine Anna and her children singing. This is a wonderful, well- recorded set. But bring your magnifying glass if you want to read the fuzzy microtype of the booklet. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Kipnis needs to slow down.......2002-01-23
An intimate recital.......2000-11-14
The set makes a nice introduction to Bach's keyboard works, featuring the famous aria from the Goldberg Variations as well as the C major prelude from the well-tempered clavier book one. You'll recognize a few other tunes in here as well, as some famous (overused?) little minuets originate from this collection, even though many of them aren't Bach's. Kipnis' playing, while at times idiosynchratic, is for the most part very enjoyable. The harpsichord and clavichord both are 1970's models. I've heard bad things about harpsichords from that decade but it really isn't bad sounding. The harpsichord is not very resonant but isn't awful and clanging. While I enjoy the intimate choice of clavichord on many selections, the set could use some sequencing help as the volume difference between the two instruments is so great that for the most part it requires constant adjustment for the listener. The vocalists are also not the best in the world but there aren't too many songs here. I'd have to recommend McGegan's single disc recording on Harmonia Mundi for sound and value (all the "hits" are on it) but if you want the full picture then this is the way to go.

Francesco Barsanti (1690-1772) was one of the many extraordinary Italian instrumentalists - virtuosi and composers - who throughout the 18th century, traveling across the whole of Europe, contributed in a decisive way to the definitive success of instrumental music and the formation of an international language. The ensemble I Fiori Musicali consists of two recorders, basso continuo and other instruments specializing in the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, alone and in conjunction with other chamber groups.Music Review:
