Best Christmas album ever.......2006-12-27

I found this album quite by accident in a college bookstore in a small town outside of Toronto. We played it (June!) on our way to Northern Ontario, gasped at its beauty, read the liner notes, and discovered that we were actually passing by Elora! On our return trip, we stopped in at Elora and learned more about the singers and the festival. This album is so remarkable in its clarity, sensitivity, and variety, that it ranks as my all-time favorite Christmas album. The family members and friends to whom I have since given this CD share my enthusiasm for this magical Christmas tour.

Maybe I'm a LITTLE bit prejudiced in favor of this fine album because it contains some of my favorite Christmas songs, or because it also has some of the beautiful songs my choral group sang last Christmas -- whatever -- The Elora Festival Singers, with Noel Edison and Michael Bloss and everyone else involved in creating this CD, do a wonderful job of transmitting the holy, joyful, festive AND secular air of that special season.

I especially loved "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day" and will probably wear out that track long before I wear out the rest of this fine CD.

It is almost March, and I'm still playing this CD. I may end up getting a second copy.

A very lovely Christmas disc.......2000-08-29

According to the notes, the Elora Festival Singers is a professional chamber choir founded in 1980 by their director, Noel Edison. The name comes from a musical festival given every summer in Elora, Ontario. They have performed on the Canadian Broadcasting System, and given concerts in Eastern Canada and the United States. They are now the professional core group of the famous Toronto Mendelssohn Choir.

They are a very competent choir, singing everything on this disc with ease and beauty. Most of the carols are pretty well known, and include some from Canada, England, France, Holland and Poland. There are the 'Huron Carol,' 'O Come All Ye Faithful,' 'Harold Darke's 'In the Bleak Mid Winter," "Ding Dong Merrily on High,' 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing,' and some less common ones. The less usual items include Honegger's 'Laudate Dominum' and Poulenc's 'Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël,' which are performed very simply and effectively.

The Elora Festival Singers is not apparently a very large group, but the reverberant recording makes them sound larger. Their excellent diction is not obscured, and the sound is very smooth.

The organ accompaniment by Michael Bloss are very effective, and include some room filling bass, although it is not super low.

The music ranges from the more peaceful and meditative to the more dramatic, and the choir conveys the varying moods of the music. The recording is quite lovely.

Music for Contemplation: New Sounds .......2005-07-10

This lovely little recording is as fascinating as it is original: each of the works is for flute (Aurele Nicolet), viola (Nobuko Imai) and harp (Naoko Yoshino). This particular ensemble of instruments was first created by Claude Debussy for his masterpiece 'Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp' and that work is one of the most important works performed on this CD.

The trio opens this recital with the brief 'Petite suite' by Arthur Honneger and follows it with a similarly brief 'Duo' for flute and viola by the little known Russian composer Edison Denisov, a work in which each instrument's lines chase the others not unlike tiny insects! The title work on this CD is a revision by composer Toru Takemitsu of his 'Toward the Sea'. Originally scored in 1981 for alto flute and guitar and subsequently altered in the same year for alto flute, harp, and string orchestra, Takemitsu composed this version in 1989 for alto flute, viola, and harp. The three movements are titled 'The Night', 'Moby Dick', and 'Cape Cod' and are inspired by the Melville novel: "Let the most absentminded of men be plunged in his deepest reveries...and he will infallibly lead you to water...Yes, as everyone knows, meditation and water are wedded together." For this listener this version of the work is the most successful in calling up Melville's thoughts.

Benjamin Britten's 'Lachrymae' was originally written for viola and piano and is here transcribed for viola and harp - appropriately enough as the piece is based on a song and variations written by John Dowland for voice and lute! The final work on the recital is Takemitsu's 'And then I knew 'twas wind', a piece written specifically for this ensemble and based on a poem by Emily Dickinson "Like Rain it sounded till it curved,/And then I knew 'twas Wind". A proper finale to this warmly fascinating recital, it recalls the Debussy Sonata heard earlier, yet with Takemitsu's own moody filigree.

A Dream Purchase for Cello Lovers.......2006-05-07

This 10 CD set is one of the best music purchases I have ever made. I initially hesitated about purchasing it because I could find no information about whether the music had been remastered, was mono etc. It hasn't been digitally remastered, but the sound is clear and sharp...Rostropovich's glorious cello couldn't be warmer or richer if he were playing in my living room.

Many, maybe most, of the recordings are of live performances, but except for the rare cough and the few seconds of applause at the end, there is nothing to distract me from the music.

Two of the things I most appreciate about this collection:

1. It's an opportunity to hear cello works by composers I'm less familiar with, i.e. Honnegger, Sauguet, Knipper, Vainberg, Mirzoyan, Glazunov, Tishchenko, and Vlasov. (Many of the best known cello works are here as well, i.e. Dvorak, Haydn, Bach, Schumann, Britten.)

2. This collection is a TERRIFIC value. I can't always afford to pay $15-$20 plus for a CD. Here, with one purchase, I have made a substantial addition to my collection of cello music.

The Russian Years 2.......2005-12-21

I have to say that if you are buying this collection in order to hear Rostropovich's perfection, you will be surprised. These recordings are of the human Rostropovich. You will find everything from unorthodox interpretations to memory slips (since you will never find Rostro playing from music). Listening to this collection, as well as the Russian Years collection, will be an eye opening experience.
I also must say that there are some mistakes in the track listings. For example, Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante is conducted by Rozhdestvensky, not Kondrashin. Aram Khachaturian's Concerto Rhapsody is not the orchestral version with Mravinsky, as listed, but the piano version with Aza Amintayeva (as in the Russian Years). Glazunov's Melodie is replaced by another version of Tchaikovsky's Pezzo Capriccioso. And lastly, the Aram Khachaturian's Sonata, accompanied by the composer, is actually Karen Khachaturian's sonata, accompanied by the composer (as on the Russian Years).
I think that this is a great collection, reguardless of the few track listing error. This is a must have for a Rostropovich fan, and especially all cellist out there.
