Schnabel: Violin Sonatas

Product Description

Product Description:
"Violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Stefan Litwin click into the dramatic core of each movement, mustering up all the color, rhythmic crispness, and contrast of character this music needs to sustain its fascinating (if sometimes rambling) case...All told, this disc is a must for anyone interested in Artur Schnabel the composer."-CLASSICS TODAY (9/9 rating!)

Very few people are aware that the famous pianist Artur Schnabel (1882–1951) left behind an extensive and influential œuvre as a composer; and the works are of such originality that it is difficult to place the composer in any of the recognized styles of the 20th century. Violinist Christian Tetzlaff was born in Hamburg in 1966. He has long been in international demand as a soloist and as a chamber music co-musician of artists like Yo-Yo Ma and Heinrich Schiff. He concertizes with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, at renowned festivals and at all the best-known concert halls. Pianist Stefan Litwin was born in Mexico City in 1960. He has achieved international recognition through the performance of contemporary music and through his unconventional interpretations of 18th and 19th century works.

Remastered from the original lacquer aircheck source, this splendid 1948 Frick Collection recital preserves some of the most intense, probing chamber playing captured by a recording device. Joseph Szigeti's sustained phrasing in the slow movements transcends momentary unsteadiness elsewhere, while Artur Schnabel leaves an indelible stamp with his buoyant rhythm, trademark angularity, and pearl-like legato. --Jed Distler

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Reference.......2004-02-15

Even more enjoyable than Oistrakh: it's more erudite and more refined too. The recording made in '48 is only of marginally poorer quality than the former. The sound is quite accceptable and it sounds as though it was a live performance. And as a whole there is more music here, particularly so when set upon the inspiringly buoyant rhythm and pearl like legatos of Schnabel.

But for the violin part, Busch (with Rudolf Serkin) is even more appealing: it was so fresh, albeit that some may prefer Kriesler or even Tashner. And of course one can't possibly forget Szeryng.
