Antonin Reicha knew Beethoven in Bonn and taught Berlioz in Paris. He is remembered mostly as a historical transition figure. But he wrote excellent, substantial music, an obvious notch below Beethoven but still very entertaining. People who wish Beethoven had written woodwind quintets (which were actually invented by Reicha) will probably love Reicha's works in that medium. Here are two of his best, in loving, mellow performances, very well recorded and sold for a pittance. My only caution is that getting to know Reicha can be very expensive; he wrote plenty of music as good as these pieces. --Leslie Gerber

This is the first volume of a very important series, the first complete recording of Reicha's Wind Quintets. Not only did Reicha invent this form (for wind-playing colleagues at the Paris Conservatory), he also wrote the largest body of substantial music in the form. Just listen to the gravity of the larghetto that opens the first piece on this disc, the Quintet, Op. 99, No. 2, and you'll realize immediately that a real composer is at work. These pieces are the closest wind equivalent to Beethoven's string quartets, and while they aren't that profound, they are full of good music. These performances and recordings are sensationally fine. --Leslie Gerber

Don't overlook this gem!.......1999-06-20

I LOVE THIS RECORDING!! As a bassoonist who has played a great number of woodwind quintets, I would recommend this CD (and the others in this series) for both the quality of the playing and for the amazing originality of the pieces themselves. I am impressed paricularly with the first quintet on this CD.. a serious piece in F minor that I have played on more than one concert! I own all 10 volumes of this set, and listen to all of them still after a year of ownership.... DON'T PASS THIS ONE UP!
