This unique album features the artistry of Ensamble Continuo, a group of instrumentalists who play the Baroque guitar, theorbo, jarana, and other traditional Latin instruments in folk and classical music, arranged in traditional styles of the various Mexican states. The subtitle of this album, "The Baroque spirit in the sound of Veracruz," gives an idea of the unique musical experience any listener will enjoy. The music of the old courts and the music of the peasantry blend in perfect harmony. Mexican music is a labyrinth of forms, genres, instruments, names, influences, languages, and even religions, all of which become intertwined to influence each other. In Mexico, music and instrument join and complement each other in the "son," i.e., the characteristic style of each cultural area. Jalisco has its son de mariachi, Oaxaca its son istmeño, etc. In Veracruz, it is known as son jarocho, literally "uncouth sound". In this recording, the artists set out to interpret the music of the Hispanic Baroque guitar from a Mexican perspective, showing in this case how the Baroque and the "Veracruzano" are two faces of the same coin – distant in time, but close in essence.
