What's Not to Love?.......2004-04-19

I have owned this set for several years and return to it endlessly. The angel Mozart has been praised over the centuries-and deservedly so-for many works,but no one-no one- wrote for wind band quite like him,as this lovely set attests. There is the familiar "Gran Partita" and "Nacht Musique" here, as well as wonderful gems for all combinations imaginable of wind instruments. Especially superb are the divertimenti for oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, horn and bassoon. Mozart's music always "sings," but particularly so in these joyous, soulful entertainments. The artistic lineup is unbeatable too: The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Holliger Wind Ensemble, and The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. This is sweet, wonderful stuff.

Heart's content!.......2002-09-20

I place the Gran Partita, K. 361, as Top Ten Mozart, and it's played with such joy here, I was almost taken aback. I have three other versions, and this one just may be my favorite. One version is all shadows, which is cool, but oh! the joy in the present version. K. 375 and K. 388 are played perfectly too. The good thing about this set is they have a lot of hard-to-find pieces for wind. To me, Mozart was unparalled at wind writing. The textures! The tones! It's too good to be true. Hooray!

A wonderful collection.......2000-10-15

This volume of the Complete Mozart Edition put togheter by Phillips is an extraordinaire set of wind serenades and divertimenti.

The complete edition is a wonderful set of the first level and of superior performance.

I strongly recommend to try to complete the full set.

Some good Fernando Sor here, especially the Sonatas, and well-played at a pretty fast (but not too fast) clip by Teicholz..the Fantaise on a Theme of Paisello is a bit long, but there are some nice variations..for about $4.00-$7.00 you can't beat the deal..

Mozart's "lighter" works really shine here.......2001-04-12

Mozart wrote these works for people in a relaxed state. Different music for different purposes. Yes these are "light" works as implicit in the title but they are first-rate Mozart, perpetually delightful. The performances are excellent, and I recommend all three volumes in the series highly. Mozart's writing for wind instruments was superb (and that's saying something) and it's on display here. Highly recommended.

Yawn.......2000-08-08

Often Vox hits home runs, even with sub-par engineering. Here the engineering is fine. The notes are all there. But it's not engaging Mozart at all. I don't know what to recommend in place of this boring peformance. Hopefully it's not Mozart's inspiration, but maybe it is thin here. At least, after listening to these discs, that's my impression. 3 stars for engineering and technical proficiency, then.

This album offers a nice cross section of the classical guitar repertoire, ranging from two Bach pieces to Torroba and Turina to twentieth century composers Manuel Ponce and Hector Villa-Lobos, plus Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Guitar Concerto no.1. It also includes music by Crespo, Segovia, and Sor, with some tracks previously unpublished.

While I am glad, in particular, to hear the Torroba,Ponce and Villa-Lobos, the monaural, two dimensional sound is not as flattering to Segovia as some MCA and DGG CDs. Segovia was at his height at the time these recordings were made, and we are fortunate to have them. At the same time, I would suggest the newcomer or casual Segovia or classical guitar listener go first for The Segovia Collection, Volume 3 (MCA), and Segovia in the music of Albeniz and Granados, which is core Segovia repertoire where his playing glows, and the sound is flattering.

This CD, while essential, is more for the student, performer and connoiseur of the classical guitar. It is perhaps the only Segovia recording of the Castelnuovo-Tedesco Concerto no. 1. I am glad to have the Ponce and Villa-Lobos selections, and Segovia's way with Torroba is incomparable. He has recorded the Bach elsewhere in better sound (MCA, DGG). I got it for the Bach, Torroba, Ponce, Villa-Lobos and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. (Segovia also plays Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Tarantella.)

If you play classical guitar buy the Jeffery's complete works of Sor. And then buy all of the naxos Sor titles you can. You will not want for Good listening and challenging music.

A beautifull anthology especially for the amateur-guitarist.......1999-02-18

Already in the knowledge that I have so much music on disc or on grammophone, I was surprised by this collection of Sors etudes and Aguado. It is wonder full performed by Kraft and it stimulates looking in my own collection and playing Sors work. A big trouvaille!
